A problem of the instability of an inhomogeneous axisymmetric plasma jet in a parallel magnetic field is solved. The jet boundary becomes, under certain conditions, unstable relative to magnetosonic oscillations (Kelvin-Helmholtz instability) in the presence of a shear flow at the jet boundary. Because of its internal inhomogeneity the plasma jet has resonance surfaces, where conversion takes place between various modes of plasma MHD oscillations. Propagating in inhomogeneous plasma, fast magnetosonic waves drive the Alfven and slow magnetosonic oscillations, tightly localized across the magnetic shells, on the resonance surfaces. MHD oscillation energy is absorbed in the neighbourhood of these resonance surfaces. The resonance surfaces disappear for the eigen-modes of slow magnetosonic waves propagating in the jet waveguide. The stability of the plasma MHD flow is determined by competition between the mechanisms of shear flow instability on the boundary and wave energy dissipation because of resonant MHD-mode coupling. The problem is solved analytically, in the WKB approximation, for the plasma jet with a boundary in the form of a tangential discontinuity over the radial coordinate. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability develops if plasma flow velocity in the jet exceeds the maximum Alfven speed at the boundary. The stability of the plasma jet with a smooth boundary layer is investigated numerically for the basic modes of MHD oscillations, to which the WKB approximation is inapplicable. A new "global" unstable mode of MHD oscillations has been discovered which, unlike the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, exists for any, however weak, plasma flow velocities.
Verification and validation of the internal kink instability in tokamak have been performed for both gyrokinetic (GTC) and kinetic-MHD codes (GAM-solver, M3D-C1-K, NOVA, XTOR-K). Using realistic magnetic geometry and plasma profiles from the same equilibrium reconstruction of the DIII-D shot #141216, these codes exhibit excellent agreement for the growth rate and mode structure of the internal kink mode when all kinetic effects are suppresed. The simulated radial mode structures agree quantitatively with the electron cyclotron emission measurement after adjusting, within the experimental uncer…
Alfvénic component of MHD turbulence damps Alfvénic waves. The consequences of this effect are important for many processes, from cosmic ray (CR) propagation to launching outflows and winds in galaxies and other magnetized systems. We discuss the differences in the damping of the streaming instability by turbulence and the damping of a plane parallel wave. The former takes place in the system of reference aligned with the local direction of magnetic field along which CRs stream. The latter is in the reference frame of the mean magnetic field and traditionally considered in plasma studies. We a…
This paper studies the instability of two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) systems on a sphere using analytical methods. The underlying flow consists of a zonal differential rotation and a toroidal magnetic field is present. Semicircle rules that prescribe the possible domain of the wave velocity in the complex plane for general flow and field profiles are derived. The paper then sets out an analytical study of the `clamshell instability', which features field lines on the two hemispheres tilting in opposite directions (Cally 2001, Sol. Phys. vol. 199, pp. 231--249). An asymptotic solutio…
In this paper, we revisit the governing equations for linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and instabilities existing within a magnetized, plane-parallel, self-gravitating slab. Our approach allows for fully non-uniformly magnetized slabs, which deviate from isothermal conditions, such that the well-known Alfvén and slow continuous spectra enter the description. We generalize modern MHD textbook treatments, by showing how self-gravity enters the MHD wave equation, beyond the frequently adopted Cowling approximation. This clarifies how Jeans' instability generalizes from hydro to magnetohydro…

We demonstrate a fast adjoint-based method to optimize tokamak and stellarator equilibria against a pressure-driven instability known as the infinite-$n$ ideal ballooning mode. We present three finite-$β$ (the ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure) equilibria: one tokamak equilibrium and two stellarator equilibria that are unstable against the ballooning mode. Using the self-adjoint property of ideal MHD, we construct a technique to rapidly calculate the change in the growth rate, a measure of ideal ballooning instability. Using the~\texttt{SIMSOPT} framework, we then implement our fast adjoin…
We consider a differentially rotating flow of an incompressible electrically conducting and viscous fluid subject to an external axial magnetic field and to an azimuthal magnetic field that is allowed to be generated by a combination of an axial electric current external to the fluid and electrical currents in the fluid itself. In this setting we derive an extended version of the celebrated Hain-Lust differential equation for the radial Lagrangian displacement that incorporates the effects of the axial and azimuthal magnetic fields, differential rotation, viscosity, and electrical resistivity.…
C-type shocks are believed to be ubiquitous in turbulent molecular clouds thanks to ambipolar diffusion. We investigate whether the drag instability in 1D isothermal C-shocks, inferred from the local linear theory of Gu & Chen, can appear in non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Two C-shock models (with narrow and broad steady-state shock widths) are considered to represent the typical environment of star-forming clouds. The ionization-recombination equilibrium is adopted for the one-fluid approach. In the 1D simulation, the inflow gas is continuously perturbed by a sinusoidal density flu…
Fast magnetic reconnection plays a fundamental role in driving explosive dynamics and heating in the solar chromosphere. The reconnection time scale of traditional models is shortened at the onset of the coalescence instability, which forms a turbulent reconnecting current sheet through plasmoid interaction. In this work we aim to investigate the role of partial ionisation on the development of fast reconnection through the study of the coalescence instability of plasmoids. Unlike the processes occurring in fully ionised coronal plasmas, relatively little is known about how fast reconnection d…
We study the effects of heat flows and velocity shear on the parallel firehose instability in weakly collisional plasma flow. For this purpose we apply an anisotropic 16-moments MHD fluid closure model that takes into account the pressure and temperature anisotropy, as well as the effect of anisotropic heat flux. The linear stability analysis of the firehose modes is carried out in the incompressible limit, where the MHD flow is parallel to the background magnetic field, while the velocity is sheared in the direction transverse to the flow direction. It seems that an increase of the velocity s…

The standard magnetorotational instability (SMRI) is a promising mechanism for turbulence and rapid accretion in astrophysical disks. It is a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instability that destabilizes otherwise hydrodynamically stable disk flow. Due to its microscopic nature at astronomical distances and stringent requirements in laboratory experiments, SMRI has remained unconfirmed since its proposal, despite its astrophysical importance. Here we report a nonaxisymmetric MHD instability in a modified Taylor-Couette experiment. To search for SMRI, a uniform magnetic field is imposed along the rot…
We investigate the propagation of MHD fast waves into a cylindrical coronal loop through an inhomogeneous stationary flow region. The background flow is assumed to have a small, spatially periodic structure in addition to a constant speed. We focus on the absorption of the wave energy in Alfvén resonance, comparing with the constant flow case. A new flow (absorption) regime is induced by the periodic flow structure which enhances the absorption for the antiparallel flow and inverse absorption (overreflection) for the parallel flow with respect to the axial wave vector, depending on the transit…
The linear MHD Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) in an anisotropic plasma concerning the direction of an external magnetic field is examined in detail. For this purpose, the MHD equations are used to describe the motion of plasma as a fluid, which is derived from 16 moments of Boltzmann-Vlasov kinetic equations for collisionless plasma. In addition, the heat flux along the magnetic field is taken into account. The growing rates of KHI are calculated as functions of the anisotropic plasma properties for a shear flow along the magnetic field at supersonic velocities. On the other hand, the quas…
