In this paper we introduce an algebraic form of the dispersion relation for a non ideal inhomogeneous dusty plasma in order to improve drastically the calculation of the drift instability growth rate. This method makes use of the multipole approximation of the Z dispersion function, previously published, and valid for the entire range. A careful analysis of the solutions spectra of this kind of polynomial equation permits us to calculate easily the growth rate of the drift instability for the ion-dust and dust acoustic mode. The value of the parallel to magnetic field wavelength for which the instability reaches the maximal value is carefully localized and discussed. The unstable dust-ion and dust acoustic mode are discriminated and analyzed in function of the density gradient, Te/Ti - ratio, and dust grain radius.
The impacts of dust density inhomogeneity and dust size distribution (DSD) on linear dust acoustic (DA) wave propagation have been investigated theoretically in an inhomogeneous unmagnetized dusty plasma having powerlaw DSD. Two different types of wave modes, viz. slow and fast mode, are found to propagate in this inhomogeneous medium. It is shown that the linear dispersion characteristics of the DA waves are substantially affected by the DSD and density inhomogeneity. Also, it is found that the phase velocity increases with increasing dust density.
It is demonstrated that low frequency shear modes in a strongly coupled, inhomogeneous, dusty plasma can grow on account of an instability involving the dynamical charge fluctuations of the dust grains. The instability is driven by the gradient of the equilibrium dust charge density and is associated with the finite charging time of the dust grains. The present calculations, carried out in the generalized hydrodynamic viscoelastic formalism, also bring out important modifications in the threshold and growth rate of the instability due to collective effects associated with coupling to the compr…
The properties of electrostatic transverse shear waves propagating in a strongly coupled dusty plasma with an equilibrium density gradient are examined using the generalized hydrodynamic equation. In the usual kinetic limit, the resulting equation has similarity to zero energy Schrodinger's equation. This has helped in obtaining some exact eigenmode solutions in both cartesian and cylindrical geometries for certain nontrivial density profiles. The corresponding velocity profiles and the discrete eigenfrequencies are obtained for several interesting situations and their physics discussed.
An experimental investigation of the propagation characteristics of shock waves in an inhomogeneous dusty plasma is carried out in the Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device. A homogeneous dusty plasma, made up of poly-dispersive kaolin particles, is initially formed in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma by maintaining a dynamic equilibrium of the pumping speed and the gas feeding rate. Later, an equilibrium density inhomogeneity in the dust fluid is created by introducing an imbalance in the original dynamic equilibrium. Non-linear wave structures are then excited in this inhomogeneous dusty p…
Real dusty crystals are inhomogeneous due to the presence of external forces. We suggest approximations for calculations of different types of inhomogeneous DC (chain and DC with a few slabs) in the equilibrium state. The results are in a good agreement with experimental results and can be used as an effective diagnostic method for many dusty systems.
In order to give a basis for the structure and correlation analysis of fine particle (dusty) plasma and colloidal suspensions, thermodynamic treatment of mixtures of macroscopic and microscopic charged particles within the adiabatic response of the latter is extended to include the case where the system is finite and weakly inhomogeneous. It is shown that the effective potential for macroscopic particles is composed of two elements: mutual Yukawa repulsion and a confining (attractive) Yukawa potential from their `shadow' (the average charge density of macroscopic particles multiplied by the mi…
This manuscript, presents a theoretical study of the linear and nonlinear characteristics of acoustic and drift waves in a bounded inhomogenious dusty plasma which has potential applications in space and lab environments. In this analysis, flow of all plasma particles is assumed to be along the axial direction whereas gradients in velocity are considered to be along the radial direction. First we study coupling of dust modified ion acoustic (DMA) and drift (DMD) waves (linear analysis) at fast time when dynamics of dust remain inactive, later formation of nonlinear vortex like structures are e…
Instabilities of ion-acoustic waves in a dusty plasma with electron-drift, collisional, and dust charge fluctuations effects, have been investigated. The regimes are clearly marked out where the theory is applicable. The critical electron-drift velocity required to drive the instability is predicted. It is also shown that electron thermal conductivity and charged grains concentration enhance the growth of the ion-acoustic mode whereas ion-viscosity, ion-thermal conductivity, and dust charge fluctuations have a stabilizing effect.
Dusty plasma experiments can be performed quite easily in strong coupling regime. In our previous work [Phys. Plasmas 21, 073705 (2014)], we numerically explored such plasmas with constant density and observed the transverse shear (TS) waves from a rotating vortex. Laboratory dusty plasmas are good examples of homogeneous plasmas however heterogeneity (e.g. density, temperature, charge) may be due to the existence of voids, different domains with different orientations, presence of external forces like magnetic and/or electric, size/charge imbalance, etc. Here, we examine how the density heter…
We report an experimental observation of multiple co--rotating vortices in a extended dust column in the background of non--uniform diffused plasma. Inductively coupled RF discharge is initiated in the background of argon gas in the source region which later found to diffuse in the main experimental chamber. A secondary DC glow discharge plasma is produced to introduce the dust particles into the plasma. These micron sized poly-disperse dust particles get charged in the plasma environment and transported by the ambipolar electric field of the diffused plasma and found to confine in the potenti…
A radiofrequency glow discharge plasma, which is polluted with a certain number of dusty grains, is studied. In addition to various dusty plasma phenomena, several specific colloidal effects should be considered. We focus on radiometric forces, which are caused by inhomogeneous temperature distribution. Aside from thermophoresis, the role of temperature distribution in dusty plasmas is an open question. It is shown that inhomogeneous heating of the grain by ion flows results in a new photophoresis like force, which is specific for dusty discharges. This radiometric force can be observable unde…
The influence of an inhomogeneous screened electric field on the charging of dust grains in a thermal dusty plasma is studied. The electric field of charged grains is considered within the cell approach, where the problem is reduced to a one-particle one. Within the model of quasichemical equilibrium, which is generalized to the case of an inhomogeneous screened electric field, we obtain the value of mean charge of dust grains, the distribution function of grains over charges, and the variance of this distribution. We also give the criterion of an inhomogeneity of the electric field and show t…
In this paper, the collective dynamics of the large aspect ratio dusty plasma is studied over a wide range of discharge parameters. An inductively coupled diffused plasma, which creates an electrostatic trap to confine the negatively charged grains, is used to form a large volume (or large aspect ratio) dusty plasma at low pressure. For introducing the dust grains into the potential well, a unique technique using a secondary DC glow discharge plasma is employed. The dust dynamics is recorded in a 2-dimension (2D) plane at a given axial location. The dust fluid exhibits wave like behavior at lo…
The drift-Alfven instabilities in the magnetic field aligned (parallel) sheared flow of a finite beta plasma with comparable inhomogeneous ion temperature and homogeneous electron temperature are examined. The development of instabilities are quantitatively discussed on the basis of numerical solution of a set of equations for the electrostatic and electromagnetic potentials. It is found that the accounting for the electromagnetic ion kinetic response, which has been ignored usually in existing discussions of the drift-Alfven instabilities of a steady plasma, reveals new drift-Alfven instabili…
This paper presents a detailed study on the controlled experimental observation of drift wave instabilities in an inhomogeneous Six pole cusp magnetic field generated by an in-house developed Multi-pole line cusp magnetic field device (MPD) [Patel et al. Rev. Sci. Instrum., 44, 726 (2018)]. The device is composed of six axially symmetric cusps and non-cusp (in between two consecutive magnets) regions. The observed instability has been investigated in one of these non-cusp regions by controlling the radial plasma density gradient with changing pole magnetic field which is a unique feature of th…
The mobility of a charged projectile in a strongly coupled dusty plasma is simulated. A net force $F$, opposed by a combination of collisional scattering and gas friction, causes projectiles to drift at a mobility-limited velocity $u_p$. The mobility $μ_p=u_p/F$ of the projectile's motion is obtained. Two regimes depending on $F$ are identified. In the high force regime, $μ_p \propto F^{0.23}$, and the scattering cross section $σ_s$ diminishes as $u_p^{-6/5}$. Results for $σ_s$ are compared with those for a weakly coupled plasma and for two-body collisions in a Yukawa potential. The simulation…
Drift wave is a prominent mode of a magnetized plasma of inhomogeneous density. It plays an important role in the transport of particles, energy and momentum perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field. The frequency of this mode is governed by the inhomogeneity scale length and is much lower than the typical homogeneous plasma modes involving ions and electrons. In this work the possibility of coupling of this particular mode with the low frequency modes of a dusty plasma medium is considered.
A perpendicular ion drift is investigated as a mechanism for the generation of magnetic field structures in a highly collisional dusty plasma. The basic dissipation mechanism is assumed to be the dust-neutrals momentum exchange, so that plasmas with a small ionization fraction are natural candidates for experiments. The model reduces to a nonlinear partial differential equation for the vector potential. The conditions for linear instability are determined. The stationary states are periodic arrangements for the magnetic field, described by a Lienard equation. The fully depleted (ion-dust) case…
Rayleigh-Taylor and Buoyancy-driven instabilities are very common instabilities for an inhomogeneous medium. We examine here how these instabilities grow for incompressible viscoelastic fluids like a strongly coupled dusty plasma by using incompressible generalized hydrodynamic (i-GHD) fluid model. Since the dust particles are pretty massive, the gravitational attraction of earth has a significant role in its dynamics. In this paper the acceleration due to gravity g and the role of strong coupling in the context of gravitationally stratified dusty plasma fluid have been considered. We find tha…
Over the past decade, dust particulate contamination has increasingly become an area of concern within the fusion research community. In a burning plasma machine design like the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), dust contamination presents problems for diagnostic integration and may contribute to tritium safety issues. Additionally due to ITER design, such dust contamination problems are projected to become of even greater concern due to dust/wall interactions and possible instabilities created within the plasma by such particulates. Since the dynamics of such dust can i…
The formation of zonal flows from inhomogeneous drift-wave (DW) turbulence is often described using statistical theories derived within the quasilinear approximation. However, this approximation neglects wave--wave collisions. Hence, some important effects such as the Batchelor--Kraichnan inverse-energy cascade are not captured within this approach. Here we derive a wave kinetic equation that includes a DW collision operator in the presence of zonal flows. Our derivation makes use of the Weyl calculus, the quasinormal statistical closure, and the geometrical-optics approximation. The obtained …
Collective transport properties of a one-dimensional asymmetric periodic substrate (1DAPS) modulated two-dimensional dusty plasma (2DDP) driven by an unbiased sinusoidal excitation force are investigated using Langevin dynamical simulations. It is discovered that, by changing the amplitude and frequency of the unbiased sinusoidal external excitations, as well as the depth of 1DPAS, both the direction and speed of the persistent particle flow can be adjusted, i.e., both the flow rectification and its reversal of the ratchet effect of the steady drift motion for particles are achieved using vari…
We investigate the depinning dynamics of two-dimensional dusty plasmas (2DDP) driven over one-dimensional periodic substrates (1DPS) using Langevin dynamical simulations. We find that, for a specific range of substrate strengths, as the external driving force increases from zero, there are three different states, which are the pinned, the disordered plastic flow, and the moving ordered states, respectively. These three states are clearly observed using different diagnostics, including the collective drift velocity, static structural measures, the particle trajectories, the mean-squared displac…
The theory of the ion cyclotron (IC) electrostatic parametric instabilities of the inhomogeneous plasma which are driven by the inhomogeneous electric field of the fast wave (FW) in front of FW antenna is developed. It is found that the spatial inhomogeneity of the parametric IC turbulence and of the drift turbulence is at the origin of the flows which transport a large part of FW power, deposited to the pedestal plasma, to the scrape-off layer and later to the divertor mostly along field lines.
The ultra low frequency modes associated to the activated dust specie in a bounded cylinder orientation plasma has been investigated here. Here flow of all plasma particles is assumed along the axial coordinates where gradients in velocity are set to be along radial direction. This analysis has been carried out for both Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian (Kappa and Carins) dusty plasma where coupling of electrostatic dust acoustic and drift modes drives global vortex formations. The coefficients of the vortex solution has been affected strongly by the presence of superthermal particles. Significanc…
The Lagrangian and Hamiltonian functions describing average motion of a relativistic particle under the action of a slightly inhomogeneous intense laser field are obtained. In weak low-frequency background fields, such a particle on average drifts with an effective, relativistically invariant mass, which depends on the laser intensity. The essence of the proposed ponderomotive formulation is presented in a physically intuitive and mathematically simple form, yet represents a powerful tool for studying various nonlinear phenomena caused by interaction of currently available smooth ultra-intense…
The linear and renormalized nonlinear kinetic theory of drift instability of plasma shear flow across the magnetic field, which has the Kelvin's method of shearing modes or so-called non-modal approach as its foundation, is developed. The developed theory proves that the time-dependent effect of the finite ion Larmor radius is the key effect, which is responsible for the suppression of drift turbulence in an inhomogeneous electric field. This effect leads to the non-modal decrease of the frequency and growth rate of the unstable drift perturbations with time. We find that turbulent scattering …
Mecheri and Marsch concluded that drift currents caused by density gradients can serve as an energy source for a plasma instability, in particular for the excitation of ion-cyclotron waves in the solar corona. It is pointed out that these authors overlooked some fundamental properties of the drift motion in inhomogeneous plasmas. The calculation is repeated, taking into account the missing terms. It is shown that the diamagnetic drift, which is essential for the new physical phenomena obtained by Mecheri and Marsch, can not contribute to the flux in the continuity equation. Moreover, the part …
Remote sensing observations of coronal holes show that heavy ions are hotter than protons and their temperature is anisotropic. In-situ observations of fast solar wind streams provide direct evidence for turbulent Alfvén wave spectrum, left-hand polarized ion-cyclotron waves, and He$^{++}$ -- proton drift in the solar wind plasma, which can produce temperature anisotropies by resonant absorption and perpendicular heating of the ions. Furthermore, the solar wind is expected to be inhomogeneous on decreasing scales approaching the Sun. We study the heating of solar wind ions in inhomogeneous pla…
Dust Dynamics Simulations utilizing a dynamical screening approach are performed to study the effect of ion-streaming on the self-organized structures in a three-dimensional spherically confined complex (dusty) plasma. Varying the Mach number M - the ratio of ion drift velocity to the sound velocity, the simulations reproduce the experimentally observed cluster configurations in the two limiting cases: at M=0 strongly correlated crystalline structures consisting of nested spherical shells (Yukawa balls) and, for M\geq1, flow-aligned dust chains, respectively. In addition, our simulations revea…
Drift instabilities contribute to the formation of edge turbulence and zonal flows, and thus the anomalous transport in tokamaks. Experiments often found micro-scale tur- bulence strongly coupled with large-scale magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes, whereas a general framework has been lacking that can cover both regimes, in partic- ular, their coupling. In this paper, the linear resistive drift wave instability (DWI) is investigated using a full 2-fluid MHD model, as well as its numerical implementation in NIMROD code. Both analytical and numerical analyses reveal a macro-scale global drift w…
We derive a model equation describing electrostatic plasma turbulence in general (inhomogeneous and curved) magnetic fields by analysing the effect of curved geometry on the ion fluid polarization drift velocity. The derived nonlinear equation generalizes the Hasegawa-Mima equation governing drift wave turbulence in a straight homogeneous magnetic field, and may serve as a toy model for the description of turbulent systems such as the core of H-mode plasmas. The equation is most appropriate for configurations with a small ExB drift velocity divergence, or a mild spatial change in ExB drift vel…

The void, which is a dust-free region inside the dust cloud in the plasma, results from a balance of the electrostatic force and the ion drag force on a dust particulate. The ion drag force having numerous forms, some of which are based on models whereas others are driven from first principles. To explain the generation of voids, Avinash et al.[K. Avinash, A. Bhattacharjee, and S. Hu, AIP.CP649, III ICPDP, (2002)p121]proposed a time-dependent nonlinear model that describes the void as a result of an instability. We augment this model by incorporating the grain drift and by replacing the ion-dr…
Observational evidence in space and astrophysical plasmas with long collisional mean free path suggests that more massive charged particles may be preferentially heated. One possible mechanism for this is the turbulent cascade of energy from injection to dissipation scales, where the energy is converted to heat. Here we consider a simple system consisting of a magnetized plasma slab of electrons and a single ion species with a cross-field density gradient. We show that such a system is subject to an electron drift wave instability, known as the universal instability, which is stabilized only w…
Analysis of driven dust vortex flow is presented in a weakly magnetized plasma. The 2D hydrodynamic model is applied to the confined dust cloud in a non-uniform magnetic field in order to recover the dust vortex flow driven in a conservative force field setup, in absence of any non-conservative fields or dust charge variation. Although the time independent electric and magnetic fields included in the analysis provide conservative forcing mechanisms, when the a drift based mechanism, recently observed in a dusty plasma experiment by [M. Puttscher and A. Melzer, Physics of Plasmas, 21,123704(201…
The influence of viscosity gradient (due to shear flow) on low frequency collective modes in strongly coupled dusty plasma is analyzed. It is shown that for a well known viscoelastic plasma model, the velocity shear dependent viscosity leads to an instability of the shear mode. The inhomogeneous viscous force and velocity shear coupling supply the free energy for the instability. The combined strength of shear flow and viscosity gradient wins over any stabilizing force and makes the shear mode unstable. Implication of such a novel instability and its applications are briefly outlined.
Structural changes of self-organized vortices in Jupiter atmospheres such as Great Red Spot (GRS) and White Ovals are demonstrated using an electrostatically bounded charged dust cloud in an unbounded streaming plasma as the prototype for various driven-dissipative complex flow systems in nature. Using a 2D hydrodynamic model, the steady state flow solutions are obtained for the volumetrically driven dust cloud in a bounded domain of aspect-ratio of 1.5 relevant to the current size of GRS and a driving sheared ion flow similar to the part of zonal jets streaming through the GRS. These nonlinea…
A possible solution to the unexplained high intensity hard x-ray (HXR) emission observable during solar flares was investigated via 3D fully relativistic, electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations with realistic ion to electron mass ratio. A beam of accelerated electrons was injected into a magnetised, Maxwellian, homogeneous and inhomogeneous background plasma. The electron distribution function was unstable to the beam-plasma instability and was shown to generate Langmuir waves, while relaxing to plateau formation. In order to estimate the role of the background density gradient on …
A simulation study of the magnetic electron drift vortex (MEDV) mode turbulence in a magnetoplasma in the presence of inhomogeneities in the plasma temperature and density, as well as in the external magnetic field, is presented. The study shows that the influence of the magnetic field inhomogeneity is to suppress streamer-like structures observed in previous simulation studies without background magnetic fields. The MEDV mode turbulence exhibits non-universal (non-Kolmogorov type) spectra for different sets of the plasma parameters. In the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field, the spec…
Dynamics of an spatially limited electron beam in the inhomogeneous solar corona plasma is considered in the framework of weak turbulence theory when the temperature of the beam significantly exceeds that of surrounding plasma. The numerical solution of kinetic equations manifests that generally the beam accompanied by Langmuir waves propagates as a beam-plasma structure with a decreasing velocity. Unlike the uniform plasma case the structure propagates with the energy losses in the form of Langmuir waves. The results obtained are compared with the results of observations of type III bursts. I…
In the paper within the approximation of the two-fluid magnetohydrodynamics and geometrooptical approximation the dispersion relation was found for ionacoustic instabilities of the ionospheric plasma at 80-200km altitudes in three-dimensional weakly irregular ionosphere. Low freqeuncy solution was found. The difference between obtained and standard solution becomes significant at altitudes above 140 km. As the analysis shown in this case the solution grows with time. The conditions for existence of such solution are the presence of co-directed electron density gradients and electron drifts and…
The instability of the dust-acoustic waves driven by drifting electrons and ions in a dusty plasma is investigated by the kinetic theory. All the plasma components (electrons, ions and dust particles) are assumed to be the Lorentzian kappa-distributions. The spectral indexes kappa of the kappa-distributions for the three plasma components are different from each other. The obtained instability growth rate depends on the physical quantities of the plasma not only, but on the spectral indexes. The numerical results for the kappa-effect on the instability growth rate show that, if the normalized …
1.5D Vlasov-Maxwell simulations are employed to model electromagnetic emission generation in a fully self-consistent plasma kinetic model for the first time in the solar physics context. The simulations mimic the plasma emission mechanism and Larmor drift instability in a plasma thread that connects the Sun to Earth with the spatial scales compressed appropriately. The effects of spatial density gradients on the generation of electromagnetic radiation are investigated. It is shown that 1.5D inhomogeneous plasma with a uniform background magnetic field directed transverse to the density gradien…
