We study minimal graphs in the homogeneous Riemannian 3-manifold $\widetilde{PSL_2(\mathbb{R})}$ and we give examples of invariant surfaces. We derive a gradient estimate for solutions of the minimal surface equation in this space and develop the machinery necessary to prove a Jenkins-Serrin type theorem for solutions defined over bounded domains of the hyperbolic plane.
In this paper we obtain height estimates for compact, constant mean curvature vertical graphs in the homogeneous spaces $\mathrm{Nil}_3$ and $\widetilde{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. As a straightforward consequence, we announce a structure-type result for proper graphs defined on relatively compact domains.
It is known that a complete immersed minimal surface with finite total curvature in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb R$ is proper, has finite topology and each one of its ends is asymptotic to a geodesic polygon at infinity (Hauswirth and Rosenberg, 2006; Hauswirth, Nelli, Sa Earp and Toubiana, 2015). In this paper we prove that these three properties characterize complete immersed minimal surfaces with finite total curvature in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb R$. As corollaries of this theorem we obtain characterizations for minimal Scherk-type graphs and horizontal catenoids in $\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb …
We construct complete, embedded minimal annuli asymptotic to vertical planes in the Riemannian 3-manifold PSL. The boundary of these annuli consists of 4 vertical lines at infinity. They are constructed by taking the limit of a sequence of compact minimal annuli. The compactness is obtained from an estimate of curvature which uses foliations by minimal surfaces. This estimate is independent of the index of the surface. We also prove the existence of a one-periodic family of Riemann's type examples. The difficulty of the construction comes from the lack of symmetry of the ambient space PSL.
We prove that, among metrics on a compact quotient of $\left(\mathbb{H}^2\right)^n$ (product of hyperbolic planes) of prescribed total volume, the product of hyperbolic metrics has minimal volume entropy.
Let $S$ be a closed surface of genus $g \geq 2$ and let $ρ$ be a maximal $\mathrm{PSL}(2, \mathbb{R}) \times \mathrm{PSL}(2, \mathbb{R})$ surface group representation. By a result of Schoen, there is a unique $ρ$-equivariant minimal surface $\widetildeΣ$ in $\mathbb{H}^{2} \times \mathbb{H}^{2}$. We study the induced metrics on these minimal surfaces and prove the limits are precisely mixed structures. In the second half of the paper, we provide a geometric interpretation: the minimal surfaces $\widetildeΣ$ degenerate to the core of a product of two $\mathbb{R}$-trees. As a consequence, we obt…
In this article, we construct two one-parameter families of properly embedded minimal surfaces in a three-dimensional Lie group $\widetilde{E(2)}$, which is the universal covering of the group of rigid motions of Euclidean plane endowed with a left-invariant Riemannian metric. The first one can be seen as a family of helicoids, while the second one is a family of catenoidal minimal surfaces. The main tool that we use for the construction of these surfaces is a Weierstrass-type representation introduced by Meeks, Mira, Pérez and Ros for minimal surfaces in Lie groups of dimension three. In the …
We prove some non-existence results for the asymptotic Plateau problem of minimal and area minimizing surfaces in the homogeneous space ${\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})}$ with isometry group of dimension 4, in terms of their asymptotic boundary. Also, we show that a properly immersed minimal surface in ${\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})}$ contained between two bounded entire minimal graphs separated by vertical distance less than $\sqrt{1+4τ^2}π$ have multigraphical ends. Finally, we construct simply connected minimal surfaces with finite total curvature which are not graphs and a …
Let $(S,g_0)$ be a hyperbolic surface, $ρ$ be a Hitchin representation for $PSL(n,\mathbb R)$, and $f$ be the unique $ρ$-equivariant harmonic map from $(\widetilde S, \widetilde g_0)$ to the corresponding symmetric space. We show its energy density satisfies $e(f)\geq 1$ and equality holds at one point only if $e(f)\equiv 1$ and $ρ$ is the base $n$-Fuchsian representation of $(S,g_0)$. In particular, we show given a Hitchin representation $ρ$ for $PSL(n,\mathbb R)$, every $ρ$-equivariant minimal immersion $f$ from a hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H^2$ into the corresponding symmetric space $X$ is d…
We prove that every unstable equivariant minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^n$ produces a maximal representation of a surface group into $\prod_{i=1}^n\textrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ together with an unstable minimal surface in the corresponding product of closed hyperbolic surfaces. To do so, we lift the surface in $\mathbb{R}^n$ to a surface in a product of $\mathbb{R}$-trees, then deform to a surface in a product of closed hyperbolic surfaces. We show that instability in one context implies instability in the other two.

Given a closed surface S of genus at least 2, we compare the symplectic structure of Taubes' moduli space of minimal hyperbolic germs with the Goldman symplectic structure on the character variety X(S, PSL(2,C)) and the affine cotangent symplectic structure on the space of complex projective structures CP(S) given by the Schwarzian parametrization. This is done in restriction to the moduli space of almost-Fuchsian structures by involving a notion of renormalized volume, used to relate the geometry of a minimal surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold to the geometry of its ideal conformal boundary.
We show that if $g$ is a Riemannian metric on a closed piecewise locally symmetric manifold $M$, then the lift of $g$ to the universal cover $\widetilde{M}$ has a discrete isometry group. We also show that the index $[\Isom(\widetilde{M}): π_1(M)]$ is bounded by a constant independent of $g$.
In the present paper we give a geometric proof for the existence of cylinders with constant mean curvature $H>H(X)$ in certain simply connected homogeneous three-manifolds $X$ diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$, which always admit a Lie group structure. Here, $H(X)$ denotes the critical value for which constant mean curvature spheres in $X$ exist. Our cylinders are generated by a simple closed curve under a one-parameter group of isometries, induced by left translations along certain geodesics. In the spaces $\operatorname{Sol}_3$ and $\widetilde{\operatorname{PSL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$ we establish ex…
We study the decomposition of the Riemannian curvature R tensor of an almost quaternion-Hermitian manifold under the action of its structure group Sp(n)Sp(1). Using the minimal connection, we show that most components are determined by the intrinsic torsion ξand its covariant derivative \widetilde\nablaξand determine relations between the decompositions of ξ\otimesξ, \widetilde\nablaξand R. We pay particular attention to the behaviour of the Ricci curvature and the q-Ricci curvature.
For each $k\geq2$, we construct two families of surfaces with constant mean curvature $H$ for $H\in[0,1/2]$ in $Σ(κ)\times\R$ where $κ+4H^2\leq0$. The surfaces are invariant under $2π/k$-rotations about a vertical fiber of $Σ(κ)\times\R$, have genus zero, and a finite number of ends. The first family generalizes the notion of $k$-noids: It has $k$ ends, one horizontal and $k$ vertical symmetry planes. The second family is less symmetric and has two types of ends. Each surface arises as the conjugate (sister) surface of a minimal graph in a homogeneous 3-manifold. The domain of the graph is non…
We prove the three embeddedness results as follows. $({\rm i})$ Let $Γ_{2m+1}$ be a piecewise geodesic Jordan curve with $2m+1$ vertices in $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $m$ is an integer $\geq2$. Then the total curvature of $Γ_{2m+1}<2mπ$. In particular, the total curvature of $Γ_5<4π$ and thus any minimal surface $Σ\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ bounded by $Γ_5$ is embedded. Let $Γ_5$ be a piecewise geodesic Jordan curve with $5$ vertices in $\mathbb{H}^n$. Then any minimal surface $Σ\subset \mathbb{H}^n$ bounded by $Γ_5$ is embedded. If $Γ_5$ is in a geodesic ball of radius $\fracπ{4}$ in $\mathbb{S}^n_+$, …
We show that the critical exponent of a representation in the Hitchin component of $PSL(d,\mathbb{R})$ is bounded above, the least upper bound being attained only in the Fuchsian locus. This provides a rigid inequality for the area of a minimal surface on $ρ\backslash X,$ where $X$ is the symmetric space of $PSL(d,\mathbb{R}).$ The proof relies in a construction useful to prove a regularity statement: if the Frenet equivariant curve of $ρ$ is smooth, then $ρ$ is Fuchsian.
This paper is the continuation of the previous one \cite{Cui2021}, where we re-proved the area-minimization of cones over Grassmannians of $n$-planes $G(n,m;\mathbb{F})(\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C},\mathbb{H})$, Cayley plane $\mathbb{O}P^2$ from the point view of Hermitian orthogonal projectors, and gave area-minimizing cones associated to oriented real Grassmannians $\widetilde{G}(n,m;\mathbb{R})$. In this paper, we make a further step on showing that the cones, of dimension no less than $\mathbf{8}$, over minimal products of $G(n,m;\mathbb{F})$ are area-minimizing. Moreover, those cones …
We prove that the group of Hamiltonian automorphisms of a symplectic 4-manifold contains only finitely many conjugacy classes of maximal compact tori with respect to the action of the full symplectomorphism group. We also extend to rational and ruled manifolds a result of Kedra which asserts that, if $M$ is a simply connected symplectic 4-manifold with $b_{2}\geq 3$, and if $\widetilde{M}_δ$ denotes a blow-up of $M$ of small enough capacity $δ$, then the rational cohomology algebra of the Hamiltonian group of $\widetilde{M}_δ)$ is not finitely generated. Both results are based on the fact that…
