The spectrum of a Gelfand pair of the form (K lx N, K), where N is a nilpotent group, can be embedded in a Euclidean space Rd . The identification of the spherical transforms of K-invariant Schwartz functions on N with the restrictions to the spectrum of Schwartz functions on Rd has been proved already when N is a Heisenberg group and in the case where N = N3,2 is the free two-step nilpotent Lie group with three generators, with K = SO3 [2, 3, 11].
We prove that the same identification holds for all pairs in which the K-orbits in the centre of N are spheres. In the appendix, we produce bases of K-invariant polynomials on the Lie algebra n of N for all Gelfand pairs (K lx N, K) in Vinberg's list [27, 30].

It has been shown that for several nilpotent Gelfand pairs (N,K) (i.e., with N a nilpotent Lie group, K a compact group of automorphisms of N and the algebra L^1(N)^K commutative) the spherical transform establishes a 1-to-1 correspondence between the space S(N)^K of K-invariant Schwartz functions on N and the space S(Σ) of functions on the Gelfand spectrum Σ of L^1(N)^K which extend to Schwartz functions on Rd, once Σ is suitably embedded in Rd. We call this property (S). We present here a general bootstrapping method which allows to establish property (S) to new nilpotent pairs (N,K), once t…
Let $(G,K)$ be a Gelfand pair, with $G$ a Lie group of polynomial growth, and let $Σ\subset{\mathbb R}^\ell$ be a homeomorphic image of the Gelfand spectrum, obtained by choosing a generating system $D_1,\dots,D_\ell$ of $G$-invariant differential operators on $G/K$ and associating to a bounded spherical function $φ$ the $\ell$-tuple of its eigenvalues under the action of the $D_j$'s. We say that property (S) holds for $(G,K)$ if the spherical transform maps the bi-$K$-invariant Schwartz space ${\mathcal S}(K\backslash G/K)$ isomorphically onto ${\mathcal S}(Σ)$, the space of restrictions to $…
Let N be a nilpotent Lie group and K a compact subgroup of the automorphism group Aut(N) of N. It is well-known that if (KnN,N) is a Gelfand pair then N is at most 2-step nilpotent Lie group. The notion of Gelfand pair was generalized when K is a non-compact group. In this work, we give an example of a 3-step nilpotent Lie group and a non-compact subgroup K of Aut(N) such that (K nN,N) is a generalized Gelfand pair.
The primary motivation behind this paper is an attempt to provide a thorough explanation of how the Mellin transform arises naturally in a process akin to the construction of the celebrated Gelfand transform. We commence with a study of a class of Schwartz functions $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}_+),$ where $\mathbb{R}_+$ is the set of all positive real numbers. Various properties of this Fréchet space are established and what follows is an introduction of the Mellin convolution operator, which turns $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}_+)$ into a commutative Fréchet algebra. We provide a simple proof of Mellin-Y…
If $(G,K)$ is a Gelfand pair, with $G$ a Lie group of polynomial growth and $K$ a compact subgroup of $G$, the Gelfand spectrum $Σ$ of the bi-$K$-invariant algebra $L^1(K\backslash G/K)$ admits natural embeddings into ${\mathbb R}^n$ spaces as a closed subset. For any such embedding, define ${\mathcal S}(Σ)$ as the space of restrictions to $Σ$ of Schwartz functions on ${\mathbb R}^n$. We call Schwartz correspondence for $(G,K)$ the property that the spherical transform is an isomorphism of ${\mathcal S}(K\backslash G/K)$ onto ${\mathcal S}(Σ)$. In all the cases studied so far, Schwartz corresp…
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a nilpotent Lie algebra which is also regarded as a homogeneous Lie group with the Campbell-Hausdorff multiplication. This allows to define a generalized multiplication $f \# g = (f^{\vee} * g^{\vee})^{\wedge}$ of two functions in the Schwartz class $\mathcal{S}(\mathfrak{g}^{*})$, where $\vee$ and $\wedge$ are the Abelian Fourier transforms on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and on the dual $\mathfrak{g}^{*}$. In the operator analysis on nilpotent Lie groups an important notion is the one of symbolic calculus which can be viewed as a higher order generalization of the Wey…
In this paper, we study the group Fourier transform and the Kohn-Nirenberg quantization for homogeneous Lie groups as mappings between certain Gelfand triples. For this, we restrict our considerations to the case, where the homogeneous Lie group $G$ admits irreducible unitary representations, that are square integrable modulo the center $Z(G)$ of $G$, and where $\dim Z(G)=1$. Replacing the Schwartz space by a certain subspace $\mathcal S_*(G) \hookrightarrow \mathcal S(G)$, we characterise the range of the group Fourier transform on $\mathcal S_*(G)$ and construct distributions and Gelfand tri…
In this work, we consider a family of Gelfand pairs $(K \ltimes N, N)$ (in short $(K,N)$) where $N$ is a two step nilpotent Lie group, and $K$ is the group of orthogonal automorphisms of $N$. This family has a nice analytic property: almost all these 2-step nilpotent Lie group have square integrable representations. In this cases, following Moore-Wolf's theory, we find an explicit expression for the inversion formula of $N$, and as a consequence, we decompose the regular action of $K \ltimes N$ on $L^{2}(N)$. This result completes the analysis carried out by Wolf, where the inversion formula i…
In this paper we make an attempt to extend L. Schwartz's classical result on spectral synthesis to several dimensions. Due to counterexamples of D. I. Gurevich this is impossible for translation invariant varieties. Our idea is to replace translations by proper euclidean motions in higher dimensions. For this purpose we introduce the basic concepts of spectral analysis and synthesis in the non-commutative setting based on Gelfand pairs, where "translation invariance" will be replaced by invariance with respect to a compact group of automorphisms. The role of exponential functions will be playe…
Let $G= \exp(\g)$ be a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group. We show that for every $G$-invariant smooth sub-manifold $M$ of $g^*$, there exists an open relatively compact subset $\mathcal{M}$ of $M$ such that for any smooth adapted field of operators $(F(l))_{l\in M}$ supported in $G\cdot \mathcal{M}$ there exists a Schwartz function $f$ on $G$ such that $π_l(f)= \op_{F(l)}$ for all $l\in M$. This retract theorem can then be used to show that for every Lie group $\G$ of automorphisms of $G$ containing the inner automorphisms of $G$ with locally closed $\G$-orbits in $\g^*$, the pro…
Given a Lie group $G$, a compact subgroup $K$ and a representation $τ\in\hat K$, we assume that the algebra of $\text{End}(V_τ)$-valued, bi-$τ$-equivariant, integrable functions on $G$ is commutative. We present the basic facts of the related spherical analysis, putting particular emphasis on the rôle of the algebra of $G$-invariant differential operators on the homogeneous bundle $E_τ$ over $G/K$. In particular, we observe that, under the above assumptions, $(G,K)$ is a Gelfand pair and show that the Gelfand spectrum for the triple $(G,K,τ)$ admits homeomorphic embeddings in $\mathbb C^n$. In…
