The physical origin is investigated of Robin boundary conditions for wave functions at an infinite reflecting wall. We consider both Schrödinger and phase-space quantum mechanics (a.k.a. deformation quantization), for this simple example of a contact interaction. A non-relativistic particle moving freely on the half-line is treated as moving on the full line in the presence of an infinite potential wall, realized as a limit of a Morse potential. We show that the wave functions for the Morse states can become those for a free particle on the half-line with Robin boundary conditions. However, Dirichlet boundary conditions (standard walls) are obtained unless a mass-dependent fine tuning (to a reflection resonance) is imposed. This phenomenon was already observed for piece-wise flat potentials, so it is not removed by smoothing. We argue that it explains why standard quantum walls are standard. Next we consider the Wigner functions (the symbols of both diagonal and off-diagonal density operator elements) of phase-space quantum mechanics. Taking the (fine-tuned) limit, we show that our Wigner functions do reduce to the expected ones on the half-line. This confirms that the Wigner transform should indeed be unmodified for this contact interaction.
The recently proposed PT-symmetric quantum mechanics works with complex potentials which possess, roughly speaking, a symmetric real part and an anti-symmetric imaginary part. We propose and describe a new exactly solvable model of this type. It is defined as a specific analytic continuation of the shape-invariant potential of Morse. In contrast to the latter well-known example, all the new spectrum proves real, discrete and bounded below. All its three separate subsequences are quadratic in n.
We present the quantum mechanics problem of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation with the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential. This potential is of possible interest to quark physics in so far as it captures the essentials of the QCD quark-gluon dynamics and (i) interpolates between a Coulomb-like potential (associated with one-gluon exchange) and the infinite wall potential (associated with asymptotic freedom), (ii) reproduces in the intermediary region the linear confinement potential (associated with multi-gluon self-interactions) as established by lattice QCD calculations of hadron pr…
Morse oscillator is one of the known solvable potentials which attracts many applications in quantum mechanics especially in quantum chemistry. One of the interesting results of this study is the generation of ladder operators for Morse potential. The operators are a representation of the shifting energy levels of the states exhibited by the wavefunction. From this result, we manipulate and deform the operators in such a way that it gives a noncommutative property to promote noncommutative quantum mechanics (NCQM). The resultant NC feature can be shown in the spatial coordinates and finally th…
We find theoretical results on energy eigenvalues and corresponding supersymmetric Hamiltonians reflect contradictory behavior for negative values of A. furthermore the resulting supersymmetric partners potentials can be model scattering states instead of bound states, However following the literature ( Flu 1979);J and A (J. Physics A 2020), we suggest a correct form of super potential , which remains valid for both positive and negative values of constants. A from this in complex space also the eigenvalues remain invariant without discussion of T-symmetry as the previous discussion appears in…
In this paper we discuss the Morse potential on a quantum computer. The Morse potential is useful to describe diatomic molecules and has a finite number of bound states which can be measured through spectroscopy. It is also a example of an exactly soluble potential using supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Using the the supersymmetric quantum mechanics formalism one can derive a heirachy of Hamiltonians such that the ground state of the next rung on the heirarchy yeids the first excited state of the hamiltonian below it. Using this method one can determine all the states of the Morse potential b…
Robin (or mixed) boundary conditions in quantum mechanics have received considerable attention in the last two decades, in particular, for applications to nanoscale systems. However, their utility has remained obscure to the larger physics community; in fact, one may find extant claims in the literature about the supposed naturalness of the specific Dirichlet (or vanishing) boundary condition. Here we demonstrate that not only are Dirichlet boundary conditions unnatural, but that Robin boundary conditions have utility in the long-wavelength approximation of short-ranged potentials. For illustr…
The supersymmetric solutions of PT-/non-PT-symmetric and non-Hermitian deformed Morse and Pöschl-Teller potentials are obtained by solving the Schrödinger equation. We consider the time-independent Wigner functions of phase-space quantum mechanics (a.k.a. deformation quantization) for a Morse potential. First, we find them by solving the $\ast$-eigenvalue equations, using a method that can be applied to potentials that are polynomial in an exponential. A Mellin transform converts the $\ast$-eigenvalue equations to difference equations, and factorized solutions are found directly for all values of the parameters. The symbols of both diagonal and off-diagonal density operator elements in the energy basis are found this way. The Wigner transforms of the dens…
Supersymmetry is a technique that allows us to extract information about the states and spectra of quantum mechanical systems which may otherwise be unsolvable. In this paper we reconstruct Ioffe's set of states for the singular non-separable two-dimensional Morse potential using supersymmetry from a non-degenerate set of states constructed for the initial separable Morse Hamiltonian. We define generalised coherent states, compute their uncertainty relations, and we find that the singularity in the partner Hamiltonian significantly affects the localisation of the coherent state wavefunction.
The analytic solutions of the one-dimensional Schroedinger equation for the trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential reported in the literature rely upon the Jacobi polynomials with complex indices and complex arguments. We first draw attention to the fact that the complex Jacobi polynomials have non-trivial orthogonality properties which make them uncomfortable for physics applications. Instead we here solve above equation in terms of real orthogonal polynomials. The new solutions are used in the construction of the quantum-mechanic superpotential.
Using a version of Witten's supersymmetric quantum mechanics proposed by Caticha, we relate Montroll's kink to a traveling, asymmetric Morse double-well potential suggesting in this way a connection between kink modes and vibrational degrees of freedom along microtubules
Completeness of the eigenfunctions of a quantum mechanical system is crucial for its probability interpretation. By using the method of contour integral we give properly normalized eigenfunctions for both discrete and continuum spectrum of the Morse potential, and explicitly prove the completeness relation. As an application we use our spectral decomposition formula to study the problem of the pricing of an Asian option traded in financial markets.
Morse potential $V_M(x)= g^2\exp (2x)-g(2h+1)\exp(x)$ is defined on the full line, $-\infty<x<\infty$ and it defines an exactly solvable 1-d quantum mechanical system with finitely many discrete eigenstates. By taking its right half $0\le x<\infty$ and glueing it with the left half of its mirror image $V_M(-x)$, $-\infty<x\le0$, the symmetric Morse potential $V(x)= g^2\exp (2|x|)-g(2h+1)\exp(|x|)$ is obtained. The quantum mechanical system of this piecewise analytic potential has infinitely many discrete eigenstates with the corresponding eigenfunctions given by the Whittaker W function. The e…
We provide a squeeze-like transformation that allows one to remove a position dependent mass from the Hamiltonian. Methods to solve the Schrödinger equation may then be applied to find the respective eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. As an example, we consider a position-dependent-mass that leads to the integrable Morse potential and therefore to well-known solutions.
Ladder operators for the hyperbolic Rosen-Morse (RMII) potential are realized using the shape invariance property appearing, in particular, using supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The extension of the ladder operators to a specific class of rational extensions of the RMII potential is presented and discussed. Coherent states are then constructed as almost eigenstates of the lowering operators. Some properties are analyzed and compared. The ladder operators and coherent states constructions presented are extended to the case of the trigonometric Rosen-Morse (RMI) potential using a point canonic…
It is shown that the spin operator can be described by an algebra which is in between so(3) and e(2). Relativistic version of the singlet state for two Dirac electrons is discussed. It is shown that a measure of massless particle's extension can be naturally constructed and that this measure corresponds at the classical level to the radius of the Robinson congruence.
A hypergeometric type equation satisfying certain conditions defines either a finite or an infinite system of orthogonal polynomials. We present in a unified and explicit way all these systems of orthogonal polynomials, the associated special functions and the corresponding raising/lowering operators. The considered equations are directly related to some Schrodinger type equations (Poschl-Teller, Scarf, Morse, etc), and the defined special functions are related to the corresponding bound-state eigenfunctions.
Some extensions of the (third-class) Romanovski polynomials (also called Romanovski/pseudo-Jacobi polynomials), which appear in bound-state wavefunctions of rationally-extended Scarf II and Rosen-Morse I potentials, are considered. For the former potentials, the generalized polynomials satisfy a finite orthogonality relation, while for the latter an infinite set of relations among polynomials with degree-dependent parameters is obtained. Both types of relations are counterparts of those known for conventional polynomials. In the absence of any direct information on the zeros of the Romanovski …
The energy spectra and the corresponding two- component spinor wavefunctions of the Dirac equation for the Rosen-Morse potential with spin and pseudospin symmetry are obtained. The $s-$wave ($κ= 0$ state) solutions for this problem are obtained by using the basic concept of the supersymmetric quantum mechanics approach and function analysis (standard approach) in the calculations. Under the spin symmetry and pseudospin symmetry, the energy equation and the corresponding two-component spinor wavefunctions for this potential and other special types of this potential are obtained. Extension of th…
In this paper, we investigate DNA denaturation through Statistical Mechanics and show that exceptional polynomials lead to DNA mutation. We consider a DNA model with two chains connected by Morse potential representing the H bonds, and then we calculate the partition function for this model. The partition function is converted into a Schrödinger like an equation. We exploit the techniques of SUSY quantum mechanics to model DNA mutation. We also compute the thermal denaturation of DNA for each mutated state.
With the use of a second derivative test based on constrained second derivatives, a proof is given that excited states in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics are saddle points of the energy expectation value, and is shown, further, how to determine their Morse index.
The construction of rationally-extended Morse potentials is analyzed in the framework of first-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The known family of extended potentials $V_{A,B,{\rm ext}}(x)$, obtained from a conventional Morse potential $V_{A-1,B}(x)$ by the addition of a bound state below the spectrum of the latter, is re-obtained. More importantly, the existence of another family of extended potentials, strictly isospectral to $V_{A+1,B}(x)$, is pointed out for a well-chosen range of parameter values. Although not shape invariant, such extended potentials exhibit a kind of `enlarged' …
It has been observed that a quantum mechanical theory need not to be Hermitian to have a real spectrum. In this paper we obtain the eigenvalues of a Dirac charged particle in a complex static and spherically symmetric potential. Furthermore, we study the Complex Morse and complex Coulomb potentials.
The object of this paper is to investigate, classically and quantum mechanically, the relation existing between the position-dependent effective mass and damping-antidamping dynamics. The quantization of the equations of motion is carried out using the geometric interpretation of the motion, and we compare it with the one based on the ordering ambiguity scheme. Furthermore, we apply the obtained results to a Fermi gas of damped-antidamped particles, and we solve the Schrödinger equation for an exponentially increasing (decreasing) mass in the presence of the Morse potential.
The confluent second-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics, in which the factorization energies tend to a common value, is used to generate Hamiltonians with known spectra departing from the hyperbolic Rosen-Morse and Eckart potentials. The possible spectral modifications, as to create a new level or to delete a given one, as well as the isospectral transformations, are discussed.
An anticommuting analogue of Brownian motion, corresponding to fermionic quantum mechanics, is developed, and combined with classical Brownian motion to give a generalised Feynman-Kac-Itô formula for paths in geometric supermanifolds. This formula is applied to give a rigorous version of the proofs of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem based on supersymmetric quantum mechanics. It is also shown how superpaths, parametrised by a commuting and an anticommuting time variable, lead to a manifestly supersymmetric approach to the index of the Dirac operator. After a discussion of the BFV approach to th…

We consider the quantum mechanics of an electron trapped on an infinite band along the $x$-axis in the presence of the Morse-like perpendicular magnetic field $\vec{B}=-B_{0}e^{-\frac{2π}{a_{0}}x}\hat{k}$ with $B_{0}>0$ as a constant strength and $a_{0}$ as the width of the band. It is shown that the square integrable pure states realize representations of $su(1,1)$ algebra via the quantum number corresponding to the linear momentum in the $y$-direction. The energy of the states increases by decreasing the width $a_{0}$ while it is not changed by $B_{0}$. It is quadratic in terms of two quantu…
We study analytically the time-dependent boundary conditions of superconducting microwave circuit experiments in the high plasma frequency limit, in which the conditions are Robin-type and relate the value of the field to the spatial derivative of the field. We give an explicit solution to the field evolution for boundary condition modulations that are small in magnitude but may have arbitrary time dependence, in a formalism that applies both to a semiopen waveguide and to a closed waveguide with two independently adjustable boundaries. The correspondence between the microwave Robin boundary c…
This paper constitutes a review on N=2 fractional supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics of order k. The presentation is based on the introduction of a generalized Weyl-Heisenberg algebra W_k. It is shown how a general Hamiltonian can be associated with the algebra W_k. This general Hamiltonian covers various supersymmetrical versions of dynamical systems (Morse system, Poschl-Teller system, fractional supersymmetric oscillator of order k, etc.). The case of ordinary supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics corresponds to k=2. A connection between fractional supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics and ordinary sup…
Information-theoretical concepts are employed for the analysis of the interplay between a transverse electric field $\mathscr{E}$ applied to a one-dimensional surface and Robin boundary condition (BC), which with the help of the extrapolation length $Λ$ zeroes at the interface a linear combination of the quantum mechanical wave function and its spatial derivative, and its influence on the properties of the structure. For doing this, exact analytical solutions of the corresponding Schrödinger equation are derived and used for calculating energies, dipole moments, position $S_x$ and momentum $S_…
Two different approaches are formulated to analyze two-dimensional quantum models which are not amenable to standard separation of variables. Both methods are essentially based on supersymmetrical second order intertwining relations and shape invariance - two main ingredients of the supersymmetrical quantum mechanics. The first method explores the opportunity to separate variables in the supercharge, and it allows to find a part of spectrum of the Schrödinger Hamiltonian. The second method works when the standard separation of variables procedure can be applied for one of the partner Hamiltoni…
Quantum walk models have been used as an algorithmic tool for quantum computation and to describe various physical processes. This paper revisits the relationship between relativistic quantum mechanics and the quantum walks. We show the similarities of the mathematical structure of the decoupled and coupled form of the discrete-time quantum walk to that of the Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, respectively. In the latter case, the coin emerges as an analog of the spinor degree of freedom. Discrete-time quantum walk as a coupled form of the continuous-time quantum walk is also shown by transfor…
A general algebraic procedure for constructing coherent states of a wide class of exactly solvable potentials e.g., Morse and P{ö}schl-Teller, is given. The method, {\it a priori}, is potential independent and connects with earlier developed ones, including the oscillator based approaches for coherent states and their generalizations. This approach can be straightforwardly extended to construct more general coherent states for the quantum mechanical potential problems, like the nonlinear coherent states for the oscillators. The time evolution properties of some of these coherent states, show r…
Elegant and mathematically rigorous methods of the quantum inverse theory are difficult to put into practice because there is always some lack of needful input information. In this situation, one may try to construct a reference potential, whose spectral characteristics would be in a reasonable agreement with the available data of the system's properties. Since the reference potential is fixed, it is always possible to calculate all its spectral characteristics, including phase shift for scattering states and Jost function, the main key to solve the inverse problem. Thereafter, one can calcula…
We present a study of the static and dynamical Casimir effects for a quantum field theory satisfying generalized Robin boundary condition, of a kind that arises naturally within the context of quantum circuits. Since those conditions may also be relevant to measurements of the dynamical Casimir effect, we evaluate their role in the concrete example of a real scalar field in 1+1 dimensions, a system which has a well-known mechanical analogue involving a loaded string.
We review selected advances in the theoretical understanding of complex quantum many-body systems with regard to emergent notions of quantum statistical mechanics. We cover topics such as equilibration and thermalisation in pure state statistical mechanics, the eigenstate thermalisation hypothesis, the equivalence of ensembles, non-equilibration dynamics following global and local quenches as well as ramps. We also address initial state independence, absence of thermalisation, and many-body localisation. We elucidate the role played by key concepts for these phenomena, such as Lieb-Robinson bo…
We import the tools of Morse theory to study quantum adiabatic evolution, the core mechanism in adiabatic quantum computations (AQC). AQC is computationally equivalent to the (pre-eminent paradigm) of the Gate model but less error-prone, so it is ideally suitable to practically tackle a large number of important applications. AQC remains, however, poorly understood theoretically and its mathematical underpinnings are yet to be satisfactorily identified. Through Morse theory, we bring a novel perspective that we expect will open the door for using such mathematics in the realm of quantum comput…
The vibrational motion equations of both homo and hetero-nuclei diatomic molecules are here derived for the first time. A diatomic molecule is first considered as a one dimensional quantum mechanics oscillator. The second and third-order Hamiltonian operators are then formed by substituting the number operator for the quantum number in the corresponding vibrational energy eigenvalues. The expectation values of relative position and linear momentum operators of two oscillating atoms are calculated by solving Heisenbergs equations of motion. Subsequently, the expectation values of potential and …
In a previous article we have shown how one can employ Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in order to solve non-homogeneous ordinary and partial differential equations. In the present work we consider the solution of eigenvalue problems for differential and integrodifferential operators, using ANNs. We start by considering the Schrödinger equation for the Morse potential that has an analytically known solution, to test the accuracy of the method. We then proceed with the Schrödinger and the Dirac equations for a muonic atom, as well as with a non-local Schrödinger integrodifferential equation t…
Two generalizations of Kempf's quadratic canonical commutation relation in one dimension are considered. The first one is the most general quadratic commutation relation. The corresponding nonzero minimal uncertainties in position and momentum are determined and the effect on the energy spectrum and eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator in an electric field is studied. The second extension is a function-dependent generalization of the simplest quadratic commutation relation with only a nonzero minimal uncertainty in position. Such an uncertainty now becomes dependent on the average positio…
We consider the hamiltonian operator associated with planar sec- tions of infinitely long cylindrical solenoids and with a homogeneous magnetic field in their interior. First, in the Sobolev space $\mathcal H^2$, we characterize all generalized boundary conditions on the solenoid bor- der compatible with quantum mechanics, i.e., the boundary conditions so that the corresponding hamiltonian operators are self-adjoint. Then we study and compare the scattering of the most usual boundary con- ditions, that is, Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin.
We consider one-dimensional Schroedinger-type operators in a bounded interval with non-self-adjoint Robin-type boundary conditions. It is well known that such operators are generically conjugate to normal operators via a similarity transformation. Motivated by recent interests in quasi-Hermitian Hamiltonians in quantum mechanics, we study properties of the transformations in detail. We show that they can be expressed as the sum of the identity and an integral Hilbert-Schmidt operator. In the case of parity and time reversal boundary conditions, we establish closed integral-type formulae for th…
