In a Poincare'-covariant vector-boson-exchange theory, the pion possesses components of pseudovector origin, which materially influence its observable properties. For a range of such quantities, we explore the consequences of a momentum-independent interaction, regularised in a symmetry-preserving manner. The contact interaction, whilst capable of describing pion static properties, produces a form factor whose: evolution for Q^2>0.17GeV^2 disagrees markedly with experiment; and asymptotic power-law behaviour conflicts strongly with perturbative-QCD.
A contact interaction is used to calculate an array of pion twist-two, -three and -four generalised transverse light-front momentum dependent parton distribution functions (GTMDs). Despite the interaction's simplicity, many of the results are physically relevant, amongst them a statement that GTMD size and shape are largely prescribed by the scale of emergent hadronic mass. Moreover, proceeding from GTMDs to generalised parton distributions (GPDs), it is found that the pion's mass distribution form factor is harder than its electromagnetic form factor, which is harder than the gravitational pr…
The pion scalar, vector and tensor form factors are calculated within a symmetry-preserving contact interaction model (CI) of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), encompassed within a Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations approach. In addition to the traditional rainbow-ladder truncation, a modified interaction kernel for the Bethe-Salpeter equation is adopted. The implemented kernel preserves the vector and axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identities, while also providing additional freedom. Consequently, new tensor structures are generated in the corresponding interaction vertices, shifting the l…
Chirally invariant Lagrangian containing nucleon, pion and chiral scalar fields is considered. A consistent scheme is proposed for obtaining the nonrelativistic operator of pion absorption by NN-pair taking into account the chiral scalar exchange. An important role of the contact interaction is pointed out.D
We use standard distorted wave theory techniques and dimensional regularization to find out solutions of the nucleon-nucleon Lippman--Schwinger equation with a kernel determined by the Weinberg's next-to-leading potential, which consists of one--pion exchange and additional contact terms with derivatives. Though for simplicity, we restrict the discussion to the $^1S_0$ channel and to contact terms containing up to two derivatives, the generalization to higher waves and/or number of derivatives is straightforward. The undetermined low energy constants emerging out of the renormalization procedu…
The standard way to demonstrate the relevance of chiral symmetry for the NN interaction is to consider higher partial waves of NN scattering which are controlled entirely by chiral pion-exchanges (since contacts vanish). However, in applications of NN-potentials to nuclear structure and reactions, the lower partial waves are the important ones, making the largest contributions. Lower partial waves are sensitive to the short-range potential, and so, when the short-range contacts were to dominate over the chiral pion-contributions in lower partial waves, then the predictions from "chiral potenti…
In this work we have performed a detailed study of chiral nuclear forces at N4LO approximation applied to selected channels of the neutron-proton ($n p$) scattering. The idea is to analyse the different contributions to the nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) potential by separating the part coming from the exchange of pions and the one coming from the contact interactions. We consider two state-of-the-art chiral interactions at N4LO which are constructed using different regularization procedures: the non-local Idaho-Salamanca force and the semi-local interaction from the Bochum group. In order to compare …
The total cross section of the $pp\to ppπ^0$ reaction near threshold is calculated in pionless effective field theory with a di-baryon and external pions. The amplitudes for a leading one-body and subleading contact neutral pion production vertex are obtained including the initial and final state interactions. After estimating a low-energy constant in the contact vertex, we compare our results for the total cross section with the experimental data.
The pion-mass-dependent nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) potentials in term of one-pion exchange and contact terms are obtained from the latest lattice QCD simulations of two-nucleon system, which employ the forms of leading order (LO) $NN$ potential from the chiral effective field theory and thus are named as the LO chiral potential in this work. We extract the coefficients of contact terms and cut-off momenta in these potentials, for the first time, by fitting the phase shifts of $^1S_0$ and $^3S_1$ channels generated by the results of HALQCD collaboration with various pion masses from $468.6$ MeV to …
The third-order particle-hole ring diagrams are evaluated for a NN-contact interaction of the Skyrme type. The pertinent four-loop coefficients in the energy per particle $\bar E(k_f) \sim k_f^{5+2n}$ are reduced to double-integrals over cubic expressions in euclidean polarization functions. Dimensional regularization of divergent integrals is performed by subtracting power-divergences and the validity of this method is checked against the known analytical results at second-order. The complete ${\cal O}(p^2)$ NN-contact interaction is obtained by adding two tensor terms and their third-order r…
We investigate the utility of partially twisted boundary conditions in lattice calculations of meson observables. For dynamical simulations, we show that the pion dispersion relation is modified by volume effects. In the isospin limit, we demonstrate that the pion electromagnetic form factor can be computed on the lattice at continuous values of the momentum transfer. Furthermore, the finite volume effects are under theoretical control for extraction of the pion charge radius.
Pion exchange is the central ingredient to nucleon-nucleon interactions used in nuclear structure calculations, and one pion exchange (OPE) enters at leading order in chiral effective field theory. In the $^{2S+1}L_J={^1S_0}$ partial wave, however, OPE and a contact term needed for proper renormalization fail to produce the qualitative, and quantitative, features of the scattering phase shifts. Cutoff variation also revealed a surprisingly low breakdown momentum of about 330 MeV in this partial wave. Here we show that potentials consisting of OPE, two pion exchange (TPE), and a single contact …
We show that in fully-self-consistent treatments of the pion; namely, its static properties and elastic and transition form factors, the asymptotic limit of the product Q^2 G_{γ* γπ^0}(Q^2), determined a priori by the interaction employed, is not exceeded at any finite value of spacelike momentum transfer. Furthermore, in such a treatment of a vector-vector contact-interaction one obtains a γ* γ-> π^0 transition form factor that disagrees markedly with all available data. We explain that the contact interaction produces a pion distribution amplitude which is flat and nonvanishing at the endpoi…
A simple model of a composite nucleon is developed in which a fermion and a boson, representing quark and diquark constituents of the nucleon, form a bound state owing to a contact interaction. Photon and pion couplings to the quark provide vertex functions for the photon and pion interactions with the composite nucleon. By a suitable choice of cutoff parameters of the model, realistic electromagnetic form factors are obtained. When a pseudoscalar pion-quark coupling is used, the pion-nucleon coupling is predominantly pseudovector. A virtual photopion amplitude is considered in which there are…
Pionful nuclear effective field theory (NEFT) in the two-nucleon sector is examined from the Wilsonian renormalization group point of view. The pion exchange is cut off at the floating cutoff scale, $Λ$, with the short-distance part being represented as contact interactions in accordance with the general principle of renormalization. We derive the nonperturbative renormalization group equations in the leading order of the nonrelativistic approximation in the operator space including up to $\mathcal{O}(p^2)$ and find the nontrivial fixed points in the $^1S_0$ and $^3S_1$--$^3D_1$ channels which…
A satisfactory description of bound and scattering states of the three-nucleon (3N) system is still lacking, contrary to what happens in the two-nucleon case. In the framework of chiral effective theory, it is possible that a realistic 3N interaction will require the inclusion of subleading contact terms, which are unconstrained by chiral symmetry. We construct the minimal 3N contact Lagrangian imposing all constraints from the discrete symmetries, Fierz identities and Poincaré covariance, and show that it consists of 10 independent operators. By integrating out the pions from the effective th…
The recently proposed hard-pion chiral perturbation theory predicts that the leading chiral logarithms factorize with respect to the energy dependence in the chiral limit. This claim has been successfully tested in the pion form factors up to two loops in chiral perturbation theory. In the present paper we explain this factorization property at two loops and even show that it is valid to all orders for a subclass of diagrams. We also demonstrate that factorization is violated starting at three loops.
In the paper nucl-ex/0010009 by The Jefferson Lab F_pi Collaboration the new results for the charged pion electromagnetic form factor are presented. The approach given in our paper hep-ph/9811318, "On a possible estimation of the constituent--quark parameters from Jefferson Lab experiments on the pion form factor" makes it possible to estimate the mass of constituent quark from such kind of experiment. Now this estimation gives M=0.21 GeV.
Medium modification of pion form factor has been evaluated in asymmetric nuclear matter. It is shown that both the shape and the pole position of the pion form factor in dense asymmetric nuclear matter is different from its vacuum counterpart with $ρ$-$ω$ mixing. This is due to the density and asymmetry dependent $ρ$-$ω$ mixing which could even dominate over its vacuum counterpart in matter. Effect of the in-medium pion factor on experimental observables {\it e.g.}, invariant mass distribution of lepton pairs has been demonstrated.
We compute the pion electromagnetic form factor in a hybrid calculation with domain wall valence quarks and improved staggered (asqtad) sea quarks. This method can easily be extended to rho-to-gamma-pi transition form factors.
We report on a program to compute the electromagnetic form factors of mesons. We discuss the techniques used to compute the pion form factor and present results computed with domain wall valence fermions on MILC asqtad lattices, as well as with Wilson fermions on quenched lattices. The methods can easily be extended to rho-to-gamma-pi transition form factors.
Almost 50 years after the discovery of gluons & quarks, we are only just beginning to understand how QCD builds the basic bricks for nuclei: neutrons, protons, and the pions that bind them. QCD is characterised by two emergent phenomena: confinement & dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB). They are expressed with great force in the character of the pion. In turn, pion properties suggest that confinement & DCSB are closely connected. As both a Nambu-Goldstone boson and a quark-antiquark bound-state, the pion is unique in Nature. Developing an understanding of its properties is thus critical…
We adopt the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to calculate the $Σ_cN$ interaction to the next-to-leading order. We consider the contact interactions, one-pion-exchange contributions, two-pion-exchange diagrams, and renormalization effects of the vertices, masses and wave functions. With the pion mass dependent expression, we fit the $Σ_cN$ interaction from HAL QCD calculation with $m_π\approx 410$ MeV and $m_π\approx 570$ MeV, and then extrapolate it to the physical pion mass. The $^3S_1(I=1/2)$ $Σ_{c}N$ interaction is weakly attractive but no bound solution is found. We also propose a …
We calculate the parity-violating nucleon-nucleon potential in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory up to the next-to-next-to-leading order. The one-pion exchange comes in the leading order and the next-to-next-to-leading order consists of two-pion-exchange and the two-nucleon contact terms. In order to investigate the effect of the higher order contributions, we calculate the parity-violating asymmetry in $\vec{n} p \to d γ$ at the threshold. The one-pion dominates the physical observable and the two-pion contribution is about or less than 10% of the one-pion contribution.
We compute two-photon exchange corrections to the electromagnetic form factor of the pion, taking into account the finite size of the pion. Compared to the soft-photon approximation for the infrared divergent contribution which neglects hadron structure effects, the corrections are found to be < 1% for small Q^2 (Q^2 < 0.1 GeV^2), but increase to several percent for Q^2 > 1 GeV^2 at extreme backward angles.
In 2008 the Jefferson Laboratory $F_π$ Collaboration released results for the pion electromagnetic form factor, which they extracted from pion electro-production data. The measured values for the pion form factor are model dependent, and require the use of the Vanderhaeghen, Guidal and Laget Regge Model for their extraction. While agreement between this model and data is impressive, the theoretical implementation of gauge invariance is less satisfying. We would like to establish how well the extracted form factor corresponds to the true form factor. To do this, we use a simple toy model, which…
The renormalization of iterated one-pion exchange (OPE) is studied in Chiral Effective Field Theory ($χ$EFT) for the antinucleon-nucleon ($\overline{N}\!N$) system. The OPE potential is cut off at a certain distance and contact interactions are represented by a complex spherical well with the same radius. We investigate the dependence on the cutoff radius of the phase shifts, inelasticities, and mixing angles for the low partial waves in $\overline{N}\!N$ scattering. We show that renormalization requires additional contact interactions compared to the expectation based on naive dimensional ana…
The renormalization of iterated one-pion exchange (OPE) has been studied in Chiral Effective Field Theory ($χ$EFT) for the antinucleon-nucleon ($\overline{N}\!N$) scattering in some partial waves (Phys. Rev. C 105, 054005 (2022)). We go further for the other higher partial waves but with total angular momenta $J\leq 3$ in this paper. Contact interactions are represented by a complex spherical well in coordinate space. Changing the radius of the spherical well means changing the cutoff. We check the cutoff dependence of the phase shifts, inelasticities, and mixing angles for the partial waves, …
We present a lattice calculation of the electromagnetic form factor of the pion obtained using the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action with two flavors of dynamical twisted Wilson quarks. The simulated pion masses range approximately from 260 to 580 MeV and the lattice box sizes are chosen in order to guarantee that M L > 4. Accurate results for the form factor are obtained using all-to-all quark propagators evaluated by a stochastic procedure. The momentum dependence of the pion form factor is investigated up to values of the squared four-momentum transfer Q**2 ~ 0.8 GeV**2 and, thanks …
We consider the electromagnetic and transition pion form factors. Using dispersion relations we simultaneously describe both the hadronic, time-like region and the asymptotic region of large energy-momentum transfer. For the latter we propose a novel mechanism of Regge fermion exchange. We find that hadronic contributions dominate form factors at all currently available energies.

We calculate the electromagnetic form factor of the pion in quenched lattice QCD. The non-perturbatively improved Sheikoleslami-Wohlert lattice action is used together with the ${\mathcal O}(a)$ improved current. We calculate form factor for pion masses down to $m_π= 360 MeV$. We compare the mean square radius for the pion extracted from our form factors to the value obtained from the 'Bethe Salpeter amplitude'. Using (quenched) chiral perturbation theory, we extrapolate our results towards the physical pion mass.
A new approach to the parameterization of pion form factors is presented and for illustration applied to the pion vector form factor. It has the correct analytic structure, is at low energies consistent with recent high accuracy analyses of $ππ$ scattering phase shifts and, at high energies, maps smoothly onto the well--known, successful isobar model.
The electromagnetic pion form factor, $F_π(q^2)$, is calculated for spacelike-$q^2$ in impulse approximation using a confining quark propagator, $S$, and a dressed quark-photon vertex, $Γ_μ$, obtained from realistic, nonperturbative Dyson-Schwinger equation studies. Good agreement with the available data is obtained for $F_π(q^2)$ and other pion observables, including the decay $π^0 \rightarrow γ\,γ$. This calculation suggests that soft, nonperturbative contributions dominate $F_π(q^2)$ at presently accessible~$q^2$.
The off--shell electromagnetic vertex function of pions and kaons is studied in a bosonized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with a gauge--invariant proper--time cutoff. The slope of the pion form factor with respect to the pion 4--momentum is found to be equal to the on--shell pion charge radius in the chiral limit. The off--shell slope of the $K^0$ form factor is zero, that of the $K^\pm$ about 15\% smaller than that of the pion. We compare our results with those of a recent calculation in chiral perturbation theory.
We present our results on the electromagnetic form factor of pion over a wide range of $Q^2$ using lattice QCD simulations with Wilson-clover valence quarks and HISQ sea quarks. We study the form factor at the physical point with a lattice spacing $a=0.076$ fm. To study the lattice spacing and quark mass effects, we also present results for 300 MeV pion at two different lattice spacings $a=0.04$ and 0.06 fm. The lattice calculations at the physical quark mass appear to agree with the experimental results. Through fits to the form factor, we estimate the charge radius of pion for physical pion …
The subtracted kernel approach is shown to be a powerful method to be implemented recursively in scattering equations with regular plus point-like interactions. The advantages of the method allows one to recursively renormalize the potentials, with higher derivatives of the Dirac-delta, improving previous results. The applicability of the method is verified in the calculation of the $^1S_0$ nucleon-nucleon phase-shifts, when considering a potential with one-pion-exchange plus a contact interaction and its derivatives. The $^1S_0$ renormalization parameters are fitted to the data. The method ca…
We evaluate the vector and scalar form factor of the pion in the presence of virtual photons at next-to-leading order in two-flavor chiral perturbation theory. We also consider the scalar and tensor pion form factors of the energy-momentum tensor. We find that the intrinsic electromagnetic corrections are of the expected size for the vector form factor and very small for the charged pion scalar form factor. Detector resolution independent photon corrections reduce the vector radius by about one percent. The scalar radius of the neutral pion is reduced by two percent by isospin-breaking contrib…
We calculate the electromagnetic form factor of the pion in lattice gauge theory. The non-perturbatively improved Sheikoleslami-Wohlert lattice action is used together with the O(a) improved current. The form factor is compared to results for other choices for the current and features of the structure of the pion deduced from the 'Bethe-Salpeter wave function' are discussed.
We calculate the two-pion continuum contribution to the nucleon isovector spectral functions drawing upon the new high statistics measurements of the pion form factor by the CMD-2, KLOE, and SND collaborations. The general structure of the spectral functions remains unchanged, but the magnitude increases by about 10%. Using the updated spectral functions, we calculate the contribution of the two-pion continuum to the nucleon isovector form factors and radii. We compare the isovector radii with simple rho-pole models and illustrate their strong underestimation in such approaches. Moreover, we g…
The vector form factor of the pion is calculated in the framework of chiral effective field theory with vector mesons included as dynamical degrees of freedom. To construct an effective field theory with a consistent power counting, the complex-mass scheme is applied.
We construct a coordinate-space chiral potential, including $Δ$-isobar intermediate states in its two-pion-exchange component. The contact interactions entering at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-next-to-leading orders ($Q^2$ and $Q^4$, respectively, $Q$ denoting generically the low momentum scale) are rearranged by Fierz transformations to yield terms at most quadratic in the relative momentum operator of the two nucleons. The low-energy constants multiplying these contact interactions are fitted to the 2013 Granada database, consisting of 2309 $pp$ and 2982 $np$ data (including, respecti…
A renormalization scheme for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction based on a subtracted T-matrix equation is proposed and applied to the one-pion-exchange potential supplemented by contact interactions. The singlet and triplet scattering lengths are given to fix the renormalized strengths of the contact interactions. With only one scaling parameter ($μ$), the results show an overall very good agreement with neutron-proton data, particularly for the observables related to the triplet channel. The agreement is qualitative in the $^1S_0$ channel. Between the low-energy NN observables we have exam…
Temperature effects on the electromagnetic couplings of pions in hot hadronic matter are studied with an effective chiral Lagrangian. We show that the Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied at non-zero temperature in the soft pion limit. The in-medium electromagnetic form factor of the pion is obtained in the time-like region and shown to be reduced in magnitude, especially near the vector-meson resonance region. Finally, we discuss the consequences of this medium effect on dilepton production from hot hadronic matter.
It is shown that comments by Guichon [hep-ph/0012126], and also by Bernard, Kaiser, and Meißner [hep-ph/0101062], regarding my recent criticism [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3576 (2000)] of how the axial form factor is supposed to enter pion electroproduction do not address the main point of my argument and therefore are irrelevant.
We derive the minimal Fock-state expansions of the pion and the photon wave functions in light-cone formalism, then we calculate the pion-photon and the photon-pion transition form factors of $γ^{\ast}π^{0}\to γ$ and $γ^{\ast}γ\to π^{0}$ processes by employing these quark-antiquark wave functions of the pion and the photon. We find that our calculation for the $γ^{\ast}γ\to π^{0}$ transition form factor agrees with the experimental data at low and moderately high energy scale. Moreover, the physical differences and inherent connections between the transition form factors of $γ^{\ast}π^{0}\to γ…
The pion electromagnetic form factor at spacelike momentum transfer is calculated in relativistic impulse approximation using the Covariant Spectator Theory. The same dressed quark mass function and the equation for the pion bound-state vertex function as discussed in the companion paper are used for the calculation, together with a dressed quark current that satisfies the Ward-Takahashi identity. The results obtained for the pion form factor are in agreement with experimental data, they exhibit the typical monopole behavior at high-momentum transfer, and they satisfy some remarkable scaling r…
We propose a new model of the nucleon in which quark-diquark configurations immersed in a pion cloud are treated in a manner consistent with Poincaré invariance. With suitably chosen parameters, the computations employing this model reproduce the measured electromagnetic form factors and the quark-spin contribution to the total nucleon angular momentum.
The pion form factor calculation in the ``point-form'' of relativistic quantum mechanics is re-considered. Particular attention is given to the relation between the momentum of the system and the momentum transfer as well as to the quark current.
We have evaluated nucleon and pion electromagnetic form factors using for the first time eigenfunctions of a light-front mass operator, reproducing a large set of energy levels, and constituent quark form factors in the one-body current. The comparison with the experimental data yields valuable information on the electromagnetic structure of light constituent quarks and on the different role played by their Dirac and Pauli form factors.
The frame dependence of the pair-term contribution to the electromagnetic form factor of the pion is studied within the Light Front approach. A symmetric ansatz for the pion Bethe-Salpeter amplitude with a pseudo scalar coupling of the constituent to the pion field is used. In this model, the pair term vanishes for the Drell-Yan condition, while it is dominant for momentum transfer along the light-front direction.
Nucleon and pion electromagnetic form factors are evaluated in the spacelike region within a light-front constituent quark model, where eigenfunctions of a mass operator, reproducing a large set of hadron energy levels, are adopted and quark form factors are considered in the one-body current. The hadron form factors are sharply affected by the high momentum tail generated in the wave function by the one-gluon-exchange interaction. Useful information on the electromagnetic structure of light constituent quarks can be obtained from the comparison with nucleon and pion experimental data.
We present detailed numerical results for the pion space-like electromagnetic form factor obtained within a recently proposed model of the pion electromagnetic current in a confining light-front QCD-inspired model. The model incorporates the vector meson dominance mechanism at the quark level, where the dressed photon with $q^+>0$ decay in an interacting quark-antiquark pair, wich absorbs the initial pion and produces the pion in the final state.
Using chiral perturbation theory, we calculate the density-dependent spin-orbit coupling generated by the two-pion exchange three-nucleon interaction involving virtual $Δ$-isobar excitation. From the corresponding three-loop Hartree and Fock diagrams we obtain an isoscalar spin-orbit strength $F_{\rm so}(k_f)$ which amounts at nuclear matter saturation density to about half of the empirical value of $90 $MeVfm$^5$. The associated isovector spin-orbit strength $G_{\rm so}(k_f)$ comes out about a factor of 20 smaller. Interestingly, this three-body spin-orbit coupling is not a relativistic effec…
The transverse charge density in the pion can be represented as a dispersion integral of the imaginary part of the pion form factor in the timelike region. This formulation incorporates information from e+e- annihilation experiments and allows one to reconstruct the transverse density much more accurately than from the spacelike pion form factor data alone. We calculate the transverse density using an empirical parametrization of the timelike pion form factor and estimate that it is determined to an accuracy of ~10% at a distance b ~ 0.1 fm, and significantly better at larger distances. The de…
