We consider the electromagnetic and transition pion form factors. Using dispersion relations we simultaneously describe both the hadronic, time-like region and the asymptotic region of large energy-momentum transfer. For the latter we propose a novel mechanism of Regge fermion exchange. We find that hadronic contributions dominate form factors at all currently available energies.

We derive the minimal Fock-state expansions of the pion and the photon wave functions in light-cone formalism, then we calculate the pion-photon and the photon-pion transition form factors of $γ^{\ast}π^{0}\to γ$ and $γ^{\ast}γ\to π^{0}$ processes by employing these quark-antiquark wave functions of the pion and the photon. We find that our calculation for the $γ^{\ast}γ\to π^{0}$ transition form factor agrees with the experimental data at low and moderately high energy scale. Moreover, the physical differences and inherent connections between the transition form factors of $γ^{\ast}π^{0}\to γ…
In the paper nucl-ex/0010009 by The Jefferson Lab F_pi Collaboration the new results for the charged pion electromagnetic form factor are presented. The approach given in our paper hep-ph/9811318, "On a possible estimation of the constituent--quark parameters from Jefferson Lab experiments on the pion form factor" makes it possible to estimate the mass of constituent quark from such kind of experiment. Now this estimation gives M=0.21 GeV.
Medium modification of pion form factor has been evaluated in asymmetric nuclear matter. It is shown that both the shape and the pole position of the pion form factor in dense asymmetric nuclear matter is different from its vacuum counterpart with $ρ$-$ω$ mixing. This is due to the density and asymmetry dependent $ρ$-$ω$ mixing which could even dominate over its vacuum counterpart in matter. Effect of the in-medium pion factor on experimental observables {\it e.g.}, invariant mass distribution of lepton pairs has been demonstrated.
In 2008 the Jefferson Laboratory $F_π$ Collaboration released results for the pion electromagnetic form factor, which they extracted from pion electro-production data. The measured values for the pion form factor are model dependent, and require the use of the Vanderhaeghen, Guidal and Laget Regge Model for their extraction. While agreement between this model and data is impressive, the theoretical implementation of gauge invariance is less satisfying. We would like to establish how well the extracted form factor corresponds to the true form factor. To do this, we use a simple toy model, which…
We present detailed numerical results for the pion space-like electromagnetic form factor obtained within a recently proposed model of the pion electromagnetic current in a confining light-front QCD-inspired model. The model incorporates the vector meson dominance mechanism at the quark level, where the dressed photon with $q^+>0$ decay in an interacting quark-antiquark pair, wich absorbs the initial pion and produces the pion in the final state.
Almost 50 years after the discovery of gluons & quarks, we are only just beginning to understand how QCD builds the basic bricks for nuclei: neutrons, protons, and the pions that bind them. QCD is characterised by two emergent phenomena: confinement & dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB). They are expressed with great force in the character of the pion. In turn, pion properties suggest that confinement & DCSB are closely connected. As both a Nambu-Goldstone boson and a quark-antiquark bound-state, the pion is unique in Nature. Developing an understanding of its properties is thus critical…
We compute two-photon exchange corrections to the electromagnetic form factor of the pion, taking into account the finite size of the pion. Compared to the soft-photon approximation for the infrared divergent contribution which neglects hadron structure effects, the corrections are found to be < 1% for small Q^2 (Q^2 < 0.1 GeV^2), but increase to several percent for Q^2 > 1 GeV^2 at extreme backward angles.
The transverse charge density in the pion can be represented as a dispersion integral of the imaginary part of the pion form factor in the timelike region. This formulation incorporates information from e+e- annihilation experiments and allows one to reconstruct the transverse density much more accurately than from the spacelike pion form factor data alone. We calculate the transverse density using an empirical parametrization of the timelike pion form factor and estimate that it is determined to an accuracy of ~10% at a distance b ~ 0.1 fm, and significantly better at larger distances. The de…
The pion electromagnetic form factor is calculated at lower and higher momentum transfer in order to explore constituent quark models and the differences among those models. In particular, the light-front constituent quark model is utilized here to calculate the pion electromagnetic form factor at lower and higher energies. The matrix elements of the electromagnetic current, are calculated with both "plus" and "minus" components of the electromagnetic current in the light-front. Further, the electromagnetic form factor is compared with other models in the literature and experimental data.
We compare the jet-path length and beam-energy dependence of the pion nuclear modification factor and a parton-jet nuclear modification factor at RHIC and LHC. We contrast predictions based on a linear pQCD and a highly non-linear hybrid-AdS holographic model of jet-energy loss. We find that both models require a reduction of the jet-medium coupling from RHIC to LHC to account for the measured pion nuclear modification factor. In case of the parton-jet nuclear modification factor, however, which serves as a lower bound for the LO jet nuclear modification factor of reconstructed jets, the extra…
A new approach to the parameterization of pion form factors is presented and for illustration applied to the pion vector form factor. It has the correct analytic structure, is at low energies consistent with recent high accuracy analyses of $ππ$ scattering phase shifts and, at high energies, maps smoothly onto the well--known, successful isobar model.
The electromagnetic pion form factor, $F_π(q^2)$, is calculated for spacelike-$q^2$ in impulse approximation using a confining quark propagator, $S$, and a dressed quark-photon vertex, $Γ_μ$, obtained from realistic, nonperturbative Dyson-Schwinger equation studies. Good agreement with the available data is obtained for $F_π(q^2)$ and other pion observables, including the decay $π^0 \rightarrow γ\,γ$. This calculation suggests that soft, nonperturbative contributions dominate $F_π(q^2)$ at presently accessible~$q^2$.
We investigate the utility of partially twisted boundary conditions in lattice calculations of meson observables. For dynamical simulations, we show that the pion dispersion relation is modified by volume effects. In the isospin limit, we demonstrate that the pion electromagnetic form factor can be computed on the lattice at continuous values of the momentum transfer. Furthermore, the finite volume effects are under theoretical control for extraction of the pion charge radius.
The off--shell electromagnetic vertex function of pions and kaons is studied in a bosonized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with a gauge--invariant proper--time cutoff. The slope of the pion form factor with respect to the pion 4--momentum is found to be equal to the on--shell pion charge radius in the chiral limit. The off--shell slope of the $K^0$ form factor is zero, that of the $K^\pm$ about 15\% smaller than that of the pion. We compare our results with those of a recent calculation in chiral perturbation theory.
We evaluate the vector and scalar form factor of the pion in the presence of virtual photons at next-to-leading order in two-flavor chiral perturbation theory. We also consider the scalar and tensor pion form factors of the energy-momentum tensor. We find that the intrinsic electromagnetic corrections are of the expected size for the vector form factor and very small for the charged pion scalar form factor. Detector resolution independent photon corrections reduce the vector radius by about one percent. The scalar radius of the neutral pion is reduced by two percent by isospin-breaking contrib…
We present our results on the electromagnetic form factor of pion over a wide range of $Q^2$ using lattice QCD simulations with Wilson-clover valence quarks and HISQ sea quarks. We study the form factor at the physical point with a lattice spacing $a=0.076$ fm. To study the lattice spacing and quark mass effects, we also present results for 300 MeV pion at two different lattice spacings $a=0.04$ and 0.06 fm. The lattice calculations at the physical quark mass appear to agree with the experimental results. Through fits to the form factor, we estimate the charge radius of pion for physical pion …
In a Poincare'-covariant vector-boson-exchange theory, the pion possesses components of pseudovector origin, which materially influence its observable properties. For a range of such quantities, we explore the consequences of a momentum-independent interaction, regularised in a symmetry-preserving manner. The contact interaction, whilst capable of describing pion static properties, produces a form factor whose: evolution for Q^2>0.17GeV^2 disagrees markedly with experiment; and asymptotic power-law behaviour conflicts strongly with perturbative-QCD.
The vector form factor of the pion is calculated in the framework of chiral effective field theory with vector mesons included as dynamical degrees of freedom. To construct an effective field theory with a consistent power counting, the complex-mass scheme is applied.
We calculate the two-pion continuum contribution to the nucleon isovector spectral functions drawing upon the new high statistics measurements of the pion form factor by the CMD-2, KLOE, and SND collaborations. The general structure of the spectral functions remains unchanged, but the magnitude increases by about 10%. Using the updated spectral functions, we calculate the contribution of the two-pion continuum to the nucleon isovector form factors and radii. We compare the isovector radii with simple rho-pole models and illustrate their strong underestimation in such approaches. Moreover, we g…
Temperature effects on the electromagnetic couplings of pions in hot hadronic matter are studied with an effective chiral Lagrangian. We show that the Ward-Takahashi identity is satisfied at non-zero temperature in the soft pion limit. The in-medium electromagnetic form factor of the pion is obtained in the time-like region and shown to be reduced in magnitude, especially near the vector-meson resonance region. Finally, we discuss the consequences of this medium effect on dilepton production from hot hadronic matter.
It is shown that comments by Guichon [hep-ph/0012126], and also by Bernard, Kaiser, and Meißner [hep-ph/0101062], regarding my recent criticism [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3576 (2000)] of how the axial form factor is supposed to enter pion electroproduction do not address the main point of my argument and therefore are irrelevant.
Pade Approximants can be used to go beyond Vector Meson Dominance in a systematic approximation. We illustrate this fact with the case of the pion vector form factor and extract values for the first two coefficients of its Taylor expansion. Pade Approximants are shown to be a useful and simple tool for incorporating high-energy information, allowing an improved determination of these Taylor coefficients.
The pion electromagnetic form factor at spacelike momentum transfer is calculated in relativistic impulse approximation using the Covariant Spectator Theory. The same dressed quark mass function and the equation for the pion bound-state vertex function as discussed in the companion paper are used for the calculation, together with a dressed quark current that satisfies the Ward-Takahashi identity. The results obtained for the pion form factor are in agreement with experimental data, they exhibit the typical monopole behavior at high-momentum transfer, and they satisfy some remarkable scaling r…
We propose a new model of the nucleon in which quark-diquark configurations immersed in a pion cloud are treated in a manner consistent with Poincaré invariance. With suitably chosen parameters, the computations employing this model reproduce the measured electromagnetic form factors and the quark-spin contribution to the total nucleon angular momentum.
The pion form factor calculation in the ``point-form'' of relativistic quantum mechanics is re-considered. Particular attention is given to the relation between the momentum of the system and the momentum transfer as well as to the quark current.
The recently proposed hard-pion chiral perturbation theory predicts that the leading chiral logarithms factorize with respect to the energy dependence in the chiral limit. This claim has been successfully tested in the pion form factors up to two loops in chiral perturbation theory. In the present paper we explain this factorization property at two loops and even show that it is valid to all orders for a subclass of diagrams. We also demonstrate that factorization is violated starting at three loops.
We have evaluated nucleon and pion electromagnetic form factors using for the first time eigenfunctions of a light-front mass operator, reproducing a large set of energy levels, and constituent quark form factors in the one-body current. The comparison with the experimental data yields valuable information on the electromagnetic structure of light constituent quarks and on the different role played by their Dirac and Pauli form factors.
The frame dependence of the pair-term contribution to the electromagnetic form factor of the pion is studied within the Light Front approach. A symmetric ansatz for the pion Bethe-Salpeter amplitude with a pseudo scalar coupling of the constituent to the pion field is used. In this model, the pair term vanishes for the Drell-Yan condition, while it is dominant for momentum transfer along the light-front direction.
Nucleon and pion electromagnetic form factors are evaluated in the spacelike region within a light-front constituent quark model, where eigenfunctions of a mass operator, reproducing a large set of hadron energy levels, are adopted and quark form factors are considered in the one-body current. The hadron form factors are sharply affected by the high momentum tail generated in the wave function by the one-gluon-exchange interaction. Useful information on the electromagnetic structure of light constituent quarks can be obtained from the comparison with nucleon and pion experimental data.
We compute the pion electromagnetic form factor in a hybrid calculation with domain wall valence quarks and improved staggered (asqtad) sea quarks. This method can easily be extended to rho-to-gamma-pi transition form factors.
The renormalizable Abelian quantum field theory model of Kroll, Lee, and Zumino is used to compute the one-loop vertex corrections to the tree-level, Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) pion form factor. These corrections, together with the known one-loop vacuum polarization contribution, lead to a substantial improvement over VMD. The resulting pion form factor in the space-like region is in excellent agreement with data in the whole range of accessible momentum transfers. The time-like form factor, known to reproduce the Gounaris-Sakurai formula at and near the rho-meson peak, is unaffected by the …
We obtain the electromagnetic form factors of the $γNΔ$ transition by analyzing recent pion-electroproduction data using a fully relativistic dynamical model. Special care is taken to satisfy Ward-Takahashi identities for the Born term in the presence of form factors thereby allowing the use of realistic electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and pion. We parametrize the $Q^2$ dependence of the {\it bare} $γN Δ$ form factors by a three-parameter form which is consistent with the asymptotic behavior inferred from QCD. The parameters of the bare $γN Δ$ form factors are the only free paramet…
We calculate the electromagnetic form factor of the pion in quenched lattice QCD. The non-perturbatively improved Sheikoleslami-Wohlert lattice action is used together with the ${\mathcal O}(a)$ improved current. We calculate form factor for pion masses down to $m_π= 360 MeV$. We compare the mean square radius for the pion extracted from our form factors to the value obtained from the 'Bethe Salpeter amplitude'. Using (quenched) chiral perturbation theory, we extrapolate our results towards the physical pion mass.
An analysis of charged B decay data in a quasi two-body decay into a charged pion plus a S, P,or D state of two charged pions is performed in the QCD factorization framework. The short distance amplitudes are calculated including next-to-leading order corrections in the strong coupling constant for vertex and penguin contributions. The long distance amplitudes due to the two charged pion final state interactions are described by the pion non-strange scalar and vector form factors for the two-pion S- and P-wave states, respectively and by a relativistic Breit-Wigner formula for the D-wave state…
Nuclear modification factor ($R_{cp}$) of protons and pions are investigated by simulating Au + Au collisions from 0.8 to 1.8$A$ GeV in a framework of an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. $R_{cp}$ of protons rises with the increase of \pt~ at different beam energies owing to radial flow and Cronin effect. The rate of increase of \rcp~ is suppressed at higher beam energies. The significant difference of $R_{cp}$ between protons and pions indicates different medium effects between protons and pions. By changing the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section, the $R_{cp}$ of…
We report on a program to compute the electromagnetic form factors of mesons. We discuss the techniques used to compute the pion form factor and present results computed with domain wall valence fermions on MILC asqtad lattices, as well as with Wilson fermions on quenched lattices. The methods can easily be extended to rho-to-gamma-pi transition form factors.
We present a lattice calculation of the electromagnetic form factor of the pion obtained using the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action with two flavors of dynamical twisted Wilson quarks. The simulated pion masses range approximately from 260 to 580 MeV and the lattice box sizes are chosen in order to guarantee that M L > 4. Accurate results for the form factor are obtained using all-to-all quark propagators evaluated by a stochastic procedure. The momentum dependence of the pion form factor is investigated up to values of the squared four-momentum transfer Q**2 ~ 0.8 GeV**2 and, thanks …
We present a lattice calculation of the vector form factor of the pion for two flavours of non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson fermions. For the measurements we utilise the CLS ensembles which include various lattice spacings and pion masses down to about 250 MeV. To obtain a fine momentum resolution near zero momentum transfer (q^2) partially twisted boundary conditions are employed using several twist angles. Due to the fine resolution around q^2=0 we are able to determine the slope of the form factor and, in turn, extract the charge radius of the pion without any model dependence. The r…
We calculate the electromagnetic form factor of the pion in lattice gauge theory. The non-perturbatively improved Sheikoleslami-Wohlert lattice action is used together with the O(a) improved current. The form factor is compared to results for other choices for the current and features of the structure of the pion deduced from the 'Bethe-Salpeter wave function' are discussed.
The electromagnetic form factor of proton is studied following our previous calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment. The non-perturbative term is incorporated to correct the $Q^2$ dependence.
The pseudo scalar form factor, which represents the pseudo scalar quark density distribution due to finite quark masses on the nucleon, is shown to manifest itself with the induced pseudo scalar form factor in the $L_0^+$ amplitude for the charged pion electro-production. Both form factors show their own peculiar momentum dependence. Under the approximation on which the Goldberg-Treimann relation holds, a sum of both form factors' contributions accounts for the t-channel contribution in the charged pion electro-production near threshold.
Experimental data of the pion charge form factor are well represented by Poincaré invariant constituent-quark phenomenology depending on two parameters, a confinement scale and an effective constituent--quark mass. Pion states are represented by eigenfunctions of mass and spin operators and of the light-front momenta. An effective current density is generated by the dynamics from a null-plane impulse current density. A simple shape of the wave function depending only on the confinement scale is sufficient.
We report on the contributions to the nucleon weak magnetic and electric form factors arising from isospin-breaking form factors. The relativized quark model used in the calculations includes isospin impurities in the large basis nucleon wavefunctions and uses constituent quark currents with both Pauli and Dirac components. Significant contributions are found to arise from the Pauli component when it is interpreted as arising from pion-baryon loops. Including these pion cloud contributions reduces the strange magnetic form factor extracted from the recent SAMPLE measurement of the proton's wea…
In this work we calculate the meson loop effects on the pion electromagnetic form factor and perform a comparison with experimental data. We show that, even though the meson cloud is not the only nonperturbative process to be considered, its contribution is significant.
The temperature and density dependence of the meson-nucleon vertex form factors is studied in the framework of thermofield dynamics. Results are obtained for two rather different nucleon-nucleon potentials: the usual Bonn potential and the variation with a softer $πNN$ form factor, due to Holinde and Thomas. In general, the results show only a modest degree of sensitivity to the choice of interaction.
The charge form factor of the pion is calculated in lattice QCD. The non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action is used together with the $\mathcal{O}(a)$ improved vector current. Other choices for the current are examined. The form factor is extracted for pion masses from 970 MeV down to 360 MeV and for momentum transfers $Q^2 \leq 2 \mathrm{GeV}^2$. The mean square charge radius is extracted, compared to previous determinations and its extrapolation to lower masses discussed.
