(abridged) We explore the statistical properties of non-linear cosmic structures in a flat $Λ$CDM cosmology in which the index of the primordial power spectrum for scalar perturbations is allowed to depend on the scale. Within the inflationary paradigm, the running of the scalar spectral index can be related to the properties of the inflaton potential, and it is hence of critical importance to test it with all kinds of observations, which cover the linear and non-linear regime of gravitational instability. We focus on the amount of running $α_{\mathrm{S},0}$ allowed by an updated combination of CMB anisotropy data and the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. Our analysis constrains $α_{\mathrm{S},0} = -0.051^{+0.047}_{-0.053}$ $(-0.034^{+0.039}_{-0.040})$ at 95% Confidence Level when (not) taking into account primordial gravitational waves in a ratio as predicted by canonical single field inflation, in agreement with other works. For the cosmological models best fitting the data both with and without running we studied the abundance of galaxy clusters and of rare objects, the halo bias, the concentration of dark matter halos, the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation, the power spectrum of cosmic shear, and the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. We find that counting galaxy clusters in future X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich surveys could discriminate between the two models, more so if broad redshift information about the cluster samples will be available. Likewise, measurements of the power spectrum of cosmological weak lensing as performed by planned all-sky optical surveys such as EUCLID could detect a running of the primordial spectral index, provided the uncertainties about the source redshift distribution and the underlying matter power spectrum are well under control.
We constrain the spectral running by combining cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data and the constraint from primordial black holes (PBHs). We find that the constraint from PBHs has a significant impact on the running of running of scalar spectral index, and a power-law scalar power spectrum without running is consistent with observational data once the constraint from PBHs is taken into account. In addition, from the constraints on the slow-roll parameters, the derived tensor spectral index in the single-field slow-roll inflation model is quite small, …
Current measurements of the temperature and polarization anisotropy power spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) seem to indicate that the naive expectation for the slow-roll hierarchy within the most simple inflationary paradigm may not be respected in nature. We show that a primordial power spectra with localized features could in principle give rise to the observed slow-roll anarchy when fitted to a featureless power spectrum. Future CMB missions have the key to disentangle among the two possible paradigms and firmly establish the slow-roll mechanism as the responsible one for the…
Next generation of cosmological observations are expected to improve the measurements of several quantities connected to the primordial inflation in the early Universe. These quantities include for example improved measurements for the spectral index of the scalar curvature of the primordial power spectrum and to also bring a better understanding on the scaling dependence of the primordial spectrum. This includes the running of the tilt and, possibly, also the running of the running. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of generating large runnings in the context of warm inflation. Us…
We compute the spectral index of primordial perturbations in a rainbow universe. We allow the Newton constant $G$ to run at (super-)Planckian energies and we consider both vacuum and thermal perturbations. If the rainbow metric is the one associated to a generalized Horava-Lifshitz dispersion relation, we find that only when $G$ tends asymptotically to zero can one match the observed value of the spectral index and solve the horizon problem, both for vacuum and thermal perturbations. For vacuum fluctuations the observational constraints imply that the primordial universe expansion can be both …
Inflationary cosmology proposes that the early Universe undergoes accelerated expansion, driven, in simple scenarios, by a single scalar field, or inflaton. The form of the inflaton potential determines the initial spectra of density perturbations and gravitational waves. We show that constraints on the duration of inflation together with the BICEP3/Keck bounds on the gravitational wave background imply that higher derivatives of the potential are nontrivial with a confidence of 99%. Such terms contribute to the scale-dependence, or running, of the density perturbation spectrum. We clarify the…
We compute the impact of the running of higher order density correlation functions on the two point functions of CMB spectral distortions (SD). We show that having some levels of running enhances all of the SDs by few orders of magnitude which might make them easier to detect. Taking a reasonable range for $ |n_{f_{NL}} |\lesssim 1.1$ and with $f_{NL} = 5$ we show that for PIXIE like experiment, the signal to noise ratio, $(S/N)_{i}$, enhances to $\lesssim 4000$ and $\lesssim 10$ for $μT$ and $yT$ toward the upper limit of $n_{f_{NL}}$. In addition, assuming $ |n_{τ_{NL}}|< 1$ and $τ_{NL} = 10…
In light of our previous work \cite{Liu:2019xhn}, we investigate the possibility of the formation of a primordial black hole in the second inflationary process induced by the oscillation of curvaton. By adopting the instability of the Mathieu equation, one could utilize the $δ$ function to fully describe the power spectrum. Due to the running of curvaton mass, we can simulate the value of abundance of primordial black holes nearly covering all of the mass ranges, in which we have given three special cases. One case could account for the dark matter in some sense since the abundance of a primor…
We study possibilities to explain the whole dark matter abundance by primordial black holes (PBHs) or to explain the merger rate of binary black holes estimated from the gravitational wave detections by LIGO/Virgo. We assume that the PBHs are originated in a radiation- or matter-dominated era from large primordial curvature perturbation generated by inflation. We take a simple model-independent approach considering inflation with large running spectral indices which are parametrized by $n_\text{s}, α_\text{s}$, and $β_\text{s}$ consistent with the observational bounds. The merger rate is fitte…
We study the possibility of reheating the universe in its early stages through the evaporation of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) that are formed due to the collapse of the inhomogeneities that were generated during inflation. By using the current results of the baryon-photon ratio obtained from BBN and CMB observations, we impose constraints on the spectral index of perturbations on those small scales that cannot be estimated through CMB anisotropy and CMB distortions. The masses of the PBHs constrained in this study lie in the range of $10^{9}$ and $10^{11}$g, which corresponds to those PBHs w…
Measurements of 21 cm line fluctuations from minihalos have been discussed as a powerful probe of a wide range of cosmological models. However, previous studies have taken into account only the pixel variance, where contributions from different scales are integrated. In order to sort out information from different scales, we formulate the angular power spectrum of 21 cm line fluctuations from minihalos at different redshifts, which can enhance the constraining power enormously. By adopting this formalism, we investigate expected constraints on parameters characterizing the primordial power spe…
The scalar induced gravitational waves are produced from primordial curvature perturbations in the second order of perturbations. We constrain the fractional energy density of scalar induced gravitational waves from gravitational waves observations. If there is no detection of the scalar induced gravitational waves, the fractional energy density of scalar induced gravitational waves is constrained by some upper limits. Depends on these upper limits, we can obtain the constraints on the power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbations. For a power-law scalar power spectrum, the constrai…
We investigate the cosmological production of gravitational waves in a nonsingular flat cosmology powered by a "running vacuum" energy density described by $ρ_Λ\equivρ_Λ(H)$, a phenomenological expression potentially linked with the renormalization group approach in quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. The model can be interpreted as a particular case of the class recently discussed by Perico et al. (Phys. Rev. D {\bf 88}, 063531, 2013) which is termed complete in the sense that the cosmic evolution occurs between two extreme de Sitter stages (early and late time de Sitter phases). {The …
We constrain the primordial gravitational waves from cosmic microwave background (CMB) and stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) observations. SGWB provides the latest way to explore the early universe and the cosmological evolution which can be reflected by primordial gravitational waves. We not only combine LIGO observations with CMB to measure primordial gravitational waves, but also forecast the potential abilities of the LISA detector and PTA projects. In the $Λ$CDM+$r$+$n_t$ model, the standard six parameters change slightly from SGWB observations. While the constraints on tens…

The problem of cosmological production of gravitational waves is discussed in the framework of an expanding, spatially homogeneous and isotropic FRW type Universe with time-evolving vacuum energy density. The gravitational wave equation is established and its modified time-dependent part is analytically resolved for different epochs in the case of a flat geometry. Unlike the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology (no interacting vacuum), we show that gravitational waves are produced in the radiation era even in the context of general relativity. We also show that for all values of the free parameter, the h…
Next-generation galaxy surveys will be able to measure perturbations on scales beyond the equality scale. On these ultra-large scales, primordial non-Gaussianity leaves signatures that can shed light on the mechanism by which perturbations in the early Universe are generated. We perform a forecast analysis for constraining local type non-Gaussianity and its two-parameter extension with a simple scale-dependence. We combine different clustering measurements from future galaxy surveys -- a 21cm intensity mapping survey and two photometric galaxy surveys -- via the multi-tracer approach. Furtherm…
By writing the running of the scalar spectral index completely in terms of the scalar index $n_s$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ we are able to impose constraints to models of inflation which are independent of the parameters of the model in question. We write analytical expressions for the running index of Natural Inflation, two models of the type Mutated Hilltop Inflation and the Starobinsky model. The resulting formulae for the running depend exclusively on $n_s$ and/or $r$ and will keep tightening the running index further as additional conditions and observations constrain the scalar …

Theoretically, the running of the cosmological constant in the IR region is not ruled out. On the other hand, from the QFT viewpoint, the energy released due to the variation of the cosmological constant in the late universe cannot go to the matter sector. For this reason, the phenomenological bounds on such a running are not sufficiently restrictive. The situation can be different in the early universe when the gravitational field was sufficiently strong to provide an efficient creation of particles from the vacuum. We develop a framework for systematically exploring this ossibility. It is su…
The running of the Higgs self coupling may lead to numerous phenomena in early universe cosmology. In this paper we introduce a scenario where the Higgs running induces turns in the trajectory passing a region with tachyonic mass, leading to a temporal tachyonic growth in the curvature power spectrum. This effect induced by the Higgs leaves phenomena in the form of primordial black holes and stochastic gravitational waves, where proposed GW observatories will be able to probe in the near future.
In this work we shall provide a model-independent general calculation of the running of the spectral index for vacuum $F(R)$ gravities. We shall exploit the functional form of the spectral index and of the tensor-to-scalar ratio in order to present a general $n_s-r$ relation for vacuum $F(R)$ gravity theories. As we show, viable $F(R)$ gravity theories can be classified to two classes of models regarding their prediction for the running spectral index. The $R^2$-attractor models predict a running of the spectral index in the range $-10^{-3}<a_s<-10^{-4}$, which classifies them in the same univ…
We develop a complete set of tools for CMB forecasting, simulation and estimation of primordial running bispectra, arising from a variety of curvaton and single-field (DBI) models of Inflation. We validate our pipeline using mock CMB running non-Gaussianity realizations and test it on real data by obtaining experimental constraints on the $f_{\rm NL}$ running spectral index, $n_{\rm NG}$, using WMAP 9-year data. Our final bounds (68\% C.L.) read $-0.6< n_{\rm NG}<1.4$, $-0.3< n_{\rm NG}<1.2$, $-1.1<n_{\rm NG}<0.7$ for the single-field curvaton, two-field curvaton and DBI scenarios, respectivel…
The spectral index of scalar perturbations is an important observable that allows us to learn about inflationary physics. In particular, a detection of a significant deviation from a constant spectral index could enable us to rule out the simplest class of inflation models. We investigate whether future observations could rule out canonical single-field slow-roll inflation given the parameters allowed by current observational constraints. We find that future measurements of a constant running (or running of the running) of the spectral index over currently available scales are unlikely to achi…
We explore the warm inflation scenario theoretical predictions looking at two different dissipative regimes for several representative primordial potentials. As it is well known, the warm inflation is able to decrease the tensor-to-scalar ratio value, rehabilitating several primordial potential ruled out in the cold inflation context by the recent cosmic microwave background data. Here we show that it is also able to produce a running of the running $n_s"$ positive and within the Planck data limits. This is very remarkable since the standard cold inflation model is unable to justify the curren…
We study production of primordial black holes (PBHs) during an early matter-dominated phase. As a source of perturbations, we consider either the inflaton field with a running spectral index or a spectator field that has a blue spectrum and thus provides a significant contribution to the PBH production at small scales. First, we identify the region of the parameter space where a significant fraction of the observed dark matter can be produced, taking into account all current PBH constraints. Then, we present constraints on the amplitude and spectral index of the spectator field as a function o…
We present a minimally parametric, model independent reconstruction of the shape of the primordial power spectrum. Our smoothing spline technique is well-suited to search for smooth features such as deviations from scale invariance, and deviations from a power law such as running of the spectral index or small-scale power suppression. We use a comprehensive set of the state-of the art cosmological data: {\it Planck} observations of the temperature and polarisation anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background, WiggleZ and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 galaxy power spectra and the C…
In conventional model independent approaches, the power spectrum of primordial perturbations is characterized by such free parameters as spectral index, its running, the running of running, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio. In this work we, show that, at least for simple inflationary potentials, one can find the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra exactly by resumming over all the running terms. In this model-dependent method, we expand the power spectra about the pivot scale to find the series terms as functions of the e-folding number for some single field models of inflation. Interesti…
Recent analyses of cosmic microwave background surveys have revealed hints that there may be a non-trivial running of the running of the spectral index. If future experiments were to confirm these hints, it would prove a powerful discriminator of inflationary models, ruling out simple single field models. We discuss how isocurvature perturbations in multi-field models can be invoked to generate large runnings in a non-standard hierarchy, and find that a minimal model capable of practically realising this would be a two-field model with a non-canonical kinetic structure. We also consider altern…
In previous works we have derived a Running Vacuum Model (RVM) for a string Universe, which provides an effective description of the evolution of 4-dimensional string-inspired cosmologies from inflation till the present epoch. In the context of this "stringy RVM" version, it is assumed that the early Universe is characterised by purely gravitational degrees of freedom, from the massless gravitational string multiplet, including the antisymmetric tensor field. The latter plays an important role, since its dual gives rise to a `stiff' gravitational-axion "matter", which in turn couples to the gr…
I discuss constraints on the power spectrum of primordial tensor perturbations from a combination of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements and the gravitational wave direct detection experiments LIGO/Virgo and DECIGO. There are two main points: (1) Inflation predicts an approximately power-law form for the primordial tensor spectrum, but makes no prediction for its amplitude. Given that neither Planck nor LIGO/Virgo has actually detected primordial tensor modes, it is trivially true that no model-independent constraint on the slope of the tensor power spectrum is possible with current…
Galaxy surveys are an important probe for superimposed oscillations on the primordial power spectrum of curvature perturbations, which are predicted in several theoretical models of inflation and its alternatives. In order to exploit the full cosmological information in galaxy surveys it is necessary to study the matter power spectrum to fully non-linear scales. We therefore study the non-linear clustering in models with superimposed linear and logarithmic oscillations to the primordial power spectrum by running high-resolution dark-matter-only N-body simulations. We fit a Gaussian envelope fo…
