We investigate transport properties of molecular junctions under two types of bias--a short time pulse or an AC bias--by combining a solution for the Green functions in the time domain with electronic structure information coming from ab initio density functional calculations. We find that the short time response depends on lead structure, bias voltage, and barrier heights both at the molecule-lead contacts and within molecules. Under a low frequency AC bias, the electron flow either tracks or leads the bias signal (capacitive or resistive response) depending on whether the junction is perfectly conducting or not. For high frequency, the current lags the bias signal due to the kinetic inductance. The transition frequency is an intrinsic property of the junctions.
Non-linear response of molecular junctions: The polaron model revisited
提出极化子模型作为非线性电导的可能机制[Galperin M,Ratner MA,and Nitzan A 2005 Nano Lett.
Despite the uniquely high thermal conductivity of graphene is well known, the exploitation of graphene into thermally conductive nanomaterials and devices is limited by the inefficiency of thermal contacts between the individual nanosheets. A fascinating yet experimentally challenging route to enhance thermal conductance at contacts between graphene nanosheets is through molecular junctions, allowing covalently connecting nanosheets otherwise interacting only via weak Van der Waals forces. Beside the bare existence of covalent connections, the choice of molecular structures to be used as therm…
In this work we consider a current carrying molecular junction with both electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions taken into account. After performing Lang-Firsov transformation and considering Markov approximations in accordance to weak coupling to the electronic leads, we obtain the master equation governing the time evolution of the reduced density matrix of the junction. The steady state of the density matrix can be used to obtain I-V characteristic of the junction in several regimes of strengths of the interactions. Our results indicate that the system can show negative differen…
We demonstrate the reversible in situ photoreduction of molecular junctions of phosphomolybdate [PMo12O40]3- monolayer self-assembled on flat gold electrodes, connected by the tip of a conductive atomic force microscope. The conductance of the one electron reduced [PMo12O40]4- molecular junction is increased by ca. 10, this open-shell state is stable in the junction in air at room temperature. The analysis of a large current-voltage dataset by unsupervised machine learning and clustering algorithms reveals that the electron transport in the pristine phosphomolybdate junctions leads to symmetri…
We consider the radiation of angular momentum (AM) from current-carrying molecular junctions. Using the nonequilibrium Green's function method, we derive a convenient formula for the AM radiation and apply it to a prototypical benzene molecule junction. We discuss the selection rules for inelastic transitions between the molecular angular momentum eigenstates due to a 6-fold rotational symmetry. Our study provides important insights into the generation of light with AM from DC-biased molecular junctions.
Thermal conductance of single molecular junctions at room temperature has been measured recently using picowatt-resolution scanning probes. However, fully understanding thermal transport in a much wider temperature range is needed for the exploration of energy transfer at single-molecular limit and the development of single-molecular devices. Here, employing a semiclassical Langevin molecular dynamics method, a comparative study is performed on the thermal transport of an alkane chain between Au and graphene electrodes, respectively. We illustrate the different roles of quantum statistics and …
We present a pedagogical review of current density simulation in molecular junction models indicating its advantages and deficiencies in analysis of local junction transport characteristics. In particular, we argue that current density is a universal tool which provides more information than traditionally simulated bond currents, especially when discussing inelastic processes. However, current density simulations are sensitive to choice of basis and electronic structure method. We note that discussing local current conservation in junctions one has to account for source term caused by open cha…
Time-dependent currents in molecular junctions can be caused by structural fluctuations or interaction with external fields. In this publication, we demonstrate how the hierarchical quantum master equation approach can be used to study time-dependent transport in a molecular junction. This reduced density matrix methodology provides a numerically exact solution to the transport problem including time-dependent energy levels, molecule-lead coupling strengths and transitions between electronic states of the molecular bridge. Based on a representative model, the influence of a time-dependent mole…

The interaction between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in single-molecule junctions is an essential mechanism, which may result in the current-induced rupture of chemical bonds. As such, it is fundamental for the stability of molecular junctions and for the applicability of molecular electronic devices. In this publication, we study current-induced bond rupture in molecular junctions using a numerically exact scheme, which is based on the hierarchical quantum master equation (HQME) method in combination with a discrete variable representation for the nuclear degrees of freedom. Empl…
We show that the conductance $G$ of molecular tunnel junctions wherein the charge transport is dominated by a single energy level can be expressed in closed analytic form which is exact and valid at arbitrary temperature $T$ and model parameter values. On this basis, we show that the single-step tunneling mechanism is compatible with a continuous thermal transition from a weakly $T$-dependent $G$ at low $T$ (Sommerfeld regime) to a nearly exponential $1/T$-dependent $G$ at high $T$ (Arrhenius-like regime). We predict that this Sommerfeld-Arrhenius transition can be observed in real molecular j…
We investigate on the same footing the time-dependent electronic transport properties and vibrational dynamics of a molecular junction. We show that fluctuations of both the molecular vibron displacement and the electronic current across the junction undergo damped oscillations towards the steady-state. We assign the former to the onset of electron tunneling events assisted by vibron-emission. The time-dependent build-up of electron-hole correlations is revealed as a departure of the charge-transfer statistics from the generalized-binomial one after a critical time tc. The phonon-back action o…
We present a theory of molecular motors based on the Ehrenfest dynamics for the nuclear coordinates and the adiabatic limit of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for the current-induced forces. Electron-electron interactions can be systematically included through many-body perturbation theory, making the nonequilibrium Green's functions formulation suitable for first-principles treatments of realistic junctions. The method is benchmarked against simulations via real-time Kadanoff-Baym equations, finding an excellent agreement. Results on a paradigmatic model of molecular motor show that correlations …
