We present a theoretical study of the transport characteristics of molecular junctions, where first-row diatomic molecules are attached to (001) gold and platinum electrodes. We find that the conductance of all of these junctions is of the order of the conductance quantum unit $G_0$, spelling out that they belong to the transparent regime. We further find that the transmission coefficients show wide plateaus as a function of the energy, instead of the usual sharp resonances that signal the molecular levels in the tunneling regime. We use Caroli's model to show that this is a rather generic property of the transparent regime of a junction, which is driven by a strong effective coupling between the delocalized molecular levels and the conduction channels at the electrodes. We analyse the transmission coefficients and chemical bonding of gold/Benzene and gold/Benzene-dithiolate (BDT) junctions to understand why the later show large resistances, while the former are highly conductive.

The nonlinear transport properties of nanometer-scale junctions formed between an inert metallic tip and an Ag film covered by a thin Ag$_{2}$S layer are investigated. Suitably prepared samples exhibit memristive behavior with technologically optimal ON and OFF state resistances yielding to resistive switching on the nanosecond time scale. Utilizing point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy we studied the nature of electron transport in the active volume of the memristive junctions showing that both the ON and OFF states correspond to truly nanometer scale, highly transparent metallic chan…
We have measured the conductance and shot-noise of superconductor-normal metal (S-N) junctions between a Niobium (Nb) film and a 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), formed in an InAs-based semiconductor heterostructure. Adjacent to the junction, the 2DEG is shaped into a submicrometer beam-splitter. The current shot-noise measured through one arm of the beam-splitter is found to be enhanced due to Andreev reflection. Both noise and conductance measurements indicate that the Nb-2DEG interface is of high quality with a transparency approaching approx. 60-70 %. The present device can be seen as a …
A Corbino ring geometry is utilized to analyze edge and bulk conductance of InAs/GaSb quantum well structures. We show that edge conductance exists in the trivial regime of this theoretically-predicted topological system with a temperature insensitive linear resistivity per unit length in the range of 2 kOhm/um. A resistor network model of the device is developed to decouple the edge conductance from the bulk conductance, providing a quantitative technique to further investigate the nature of this trivial edge conductance, conclusively identified here as being of n-type.
The phase of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in mesoscopic metal rings in the presence of a magnetic field can be modulated by application of a DC-bias current I_DC. We address the question of how a variation of I_DC and hence of the microscopic phases of the electronic wave functions results in the macroscopic phase of the conductance oscillations. Whereas the first one can be varied continuously the latter has to be quantized for a ring in two-wire configuration by virtue of the Onsager symmetry relations. We observe a correlation between a phase flip by +/- pi and the amplitude of the oscillatio…
The conductance of {\em cis/trans} isomers of stilbene molecules connected to armchair single wall carbon nanotubes is studied in the Landauer formalism combined with a density-functional based approach. For a given arrangement of the electrodes, dramatic differences in the transmission between both isomers are found. For a given isomer, the conductance can be varied by orders of magnitude by changing the molecule-electrode relative orientation. Both effects can be explained by a simple, physically transparent interference rule, which suggests a straightforward conductance control in such mole…
Motivated by an important recent experiment [Deng et al., Science 354, 1557 (2016)], we theoretically consider the interplay between Andreev bound states(ABSs) and Majorana bound states(MBSs) in quantum dot-nanowire semiconductor systems with proximity-induced superconductivity(SC), spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting. The dot induces ABSs in the SC nanowire which show complex behavior as a function of Zeeman splitting and chemical potential, and the specific question is whether two such ABSs can come together forming a topological MBS. We consider physical situations involving the dot be…
We present our recent electronic transport results in top-gated InAs/GaSb quantum well hybrid structures with superconducting Ta electrodes. We show that the transport across the InAs-Ta junction depends largely on the interfacial transparency, exhibiting distinct zero-bias behavior. For a relatively resistive interface a broad conductance peak is observed at zero bias. When a transparent InAs-Ta interface is achieved, a zero-bias conductance dip appears with two coherent-peak-like features forming at bias voltages corresponding to the superconducting gap of Ta. The conductance spectra of the …
We present here a theoretical method to determine the phononic contribution to the thermal conductance of nanoscale systems in the phase-coherent regime. Our approach makes use of classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to calculate the temperature-dependent dynamical matrix, and the phononic heat conductance is subsequently computed within the Landauer-Büttiker formalism with the help of nonequilibrium Green's function techniques. Tailored to nanostructures, crucial steps of force constant and heat transport calculations are performed directly in real space. As compared to conventional …
Manifestations of quantum coherence in the electronic conductance through nearly closed quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime are addressed. We show that quantum coherent tunneling processes explain some puzzling statistical features of the conductance peak-heights observed in recent experiments at low temperatures. We employ the constant interaction model and the random matrix theory to model the quantum dot electronic interactions and its single-particle statistical fluctuations, taking full account of the finite decay width of the quantum dot levels.
Screening effects in nanoscale junctions with strong electron-phonon coupling open new physical scenarios. We propose an accurate many-body approach to deal with the simultaneous occurrence of the Franck-Condon blockade and the screening-induced enhancement of the polaron mobility. We derive a transparent analytic expression for the electrical current: transient and steady-state features are directly interpreted and explained. Moreover, the interplay between phononic and electronic excitations gives rise to a novel mechanism of negative differential conductance. Experimental setup to observe t…
We study tunneling conductance in ferromagnetic semiconductor/insulator/s-wave superconductor junction where Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and exchange field are taken into account in the ferromagnetic semiconductor. We show that normalized conductance at zero voltage has a maximum as a function of RSOI for high transparent interface and finite exchange field. This is because Andreev reflection probability shows a nonmonotonic dependence on RSOI in the presence of the exchange field. On the other hand, for intermediate transparent interface, normalized conductance at zero voltage has a …
Electron transport through a diatomic molecular tunnel junction shows wave like interference phenomenon. By using Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) theory, we have explicitly presented current and differential conductance calculation for a diatomic molecular and two isolated atoms (two atoms having zero hybridization between their energy orbital) tunnel junctions. In case of a diatomic molecular tunnel junction, Green's function propagators entering into current and differential conductance formula interfere constructively for a molecular anti-bonding state and destructively for …
We present a technique to fabricate tunnel junctions between graphene and Al and Cu, with a Si back gate, as well as a simple theory of tunneling between a metal and graphene. We map the differential conductance of our junctions versus probe and back gate voltage, and observe fluctuations in the conductance that are directly related to the graphene density of states. The conventional strong-suppression of the conductance at the graphene Dirac point can not be clearly demonstrated, but a more robust signature of the Dirac point is found: the inflection in the conductance map caused by the elect…
We report on Andreev reflections at clean NbSe2-bilayer graphene junctions. The high transparency of the junction, which manifests as a large conductance enhancement of up to 1.8, enables us to see clear evidence of a proximity-induced superconducting gap in bilayer graphene and two Andreev reflections through a vertical NbSe2-graphene and a lateral graphene-graphene junction respectively. Quantum transport simulations capture the complexity of the experimental data and illuminate the impact of various microscopic parameters on the transmission of the junction. Our work establishes the practic…
Negative differential conductance (NDC), characterized by the decreasing current with increasing voltage, has attracted continuous attention for its various novel applications. The NDC typically exists in a certain range of bias voltages for a selected system and controlling the regions of NDC in curves of current versus voltage (I-V) is experimentally challenging. Here, we demonstrate an unusual magnetic-field-controlled NDC in graphene npn junction resonators. The magnetic field not only can switch on and off the NDC, but also can continuously tune the regions of the NDC in the I-V curves. I…
Graphene pn junction is the brick to build up variety of graphene nano-structures. The analytical formula of the conductance of graphene gradual pn junctions in the whole bipolar region has been absent up to now. In this paper, we analytically calculated that pn conductance with the spin-orbit coupling and stagger potential taken into account. Our analytical expression indicates that the energy gap causes the conductance to drop a constant value with respect to that without gap in a certain parameter region, and manifests that the curve of the conductance versus the stagger potential consists …
We experimentally investigate Andreev transport through a single junction between an s-wave indium superconductor and a thick film of a three-dimensional $Bi_2Te_3$ topological insulator. We study $Bi_2Te_3$ samples with different bulk and surface characteristics, where the presence of a topological surface state is confirmed by direct ARPES measurements. All the junctions demonstrate Andreev transport within the superconducting gap. For junctions with transparent $In-Bi_2Te_3$ interfaces we find a number of nearly periodic conductance oscillations, which are accompanied by zero-bias conductan…
Graphene is a promising candidate for building fast and ultra-sensitive bolometric detectors due to its weak electron-phonon coupling and low heat capacity. In order to realize a practical graphene-based bolometer, several important issues, including the nature of radiation response, coupling efficiency to the radiation and the thermal conductance need to be carefully studied. Addressing these issues, we present graphene-superconductor junctions as a viable option to achieve efficient and sensitive bolometers, with the superconductor contacts serving as hot electron barriers. For a graphene-su…
Electron conductance in planar magnetic tunnel junctions with long-range barrier disorder is studied within Glauber-eikonal approximation enabling exact disorder ensemble averaging by means of the Holtsmark-Markov method. This allows us to address a hitherto unexplored regime of the tunneling magnetoresistance effect characterized by the crossover from momentum-conserving to random tunneling as a function of the defect concentration. We demonstrate that such a crossover results in a reentrant magnetoresistance: It goes through a pronounced minimum before reaching disorder- and geometry-indepen…
The electronic transport of graphene p-n junctions under perpendicular magnetic field is investigated in theory. Under low magnetic field, the transport is determined by the resonant tunneling of Landau levels and conductance versus magnetic field shows a Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation. At higher magnetic field, the p-n junction subjected to the quasi-classical regime and the formation of snake states results in periodical backscattering and transmission as magnetic field varies. The conductance oscillation pattern is mediated both by magnetic field and the carrier concentration on bipolar regi…
We report on the fabrication of highly transparent superconductor/normal metal/two-dimensional electron gas junctions formed by a superconducting NbN electrode, a thin (10nm) Au interlayer, and a two-dimensional electron gas in a InGaAs/InP heterostructure. High junction transparency has been achieved by exploiting of a newly developed process of Au/NbN evaporation and rapid annealing at 400C. This allowed us to observe for the first time a decrease in the differential resistance with pronounced double-dip structure within the superconducting energy gap in superconductor-2DEG proximity systems…
Metal/two-dimensional carbon junctions are characterized by using a nanoprobe in an ultrahigh vacuum environment. Significant differences were found in bias voltage (V) dependence of differential conductance (dI/dV) between edge- and side-contact; the former exhibits a clear linear relationship (i.e., dI/dV \propto V), whereas the latter is characterized by a nonlinear dependence, dI/dV \propto V3/2. Theoretical calculations confirm the experimental results, which are due to the robust two-dimensional nature of the carbon materials under study. Our work demonstrates the importance of contact g…
We report low-temperature transport experiments on single-wall nanotubes with metallic leads of varying contact quality, ranging from weak tunneling to almost perfect transmission. In the weak tunneling regime, where Coulomb blockade dominates, the nanotubes act as one-dimensional quantum dots. For stronger coupling to the leads the conductance can be strongly enhanced by inelastic cotunneling and the Kondo effect. For open contacts Coulomb blockade is completely suppressed, and the low-temperature conductance remains generally high, although we often see distinct dips in the conductance versu…
We study a current transport through a system of a few grains connected with tunneling links. The exact solution is given for an arbitrarily connected double-grain system with a shared gate in the framework of the orthodox model. The obtained result is generalized for multigrain systems with strongly different tunneling resistances. We analyse the large-scale nonlinear conductance and demonstrate how the sample topology can be unambiguously deduced from the spectroscopy pattern (differential conductance versus gate-bias plot). We present experimental data for a multigrain sample and reconstruc…
We study Andreev reflection (AR) tunneling through a quantum dot (QD) connected to a ferromagnet and a superconductor, in which the intradot spin-flip interaction is included. By using the nonequibrium-Green-function method, the formula of the linear AR conductance is derived at zero temperature. It is found that competition between the intradot spin-flip scattering and the tunneling coupling to the leads dominantes resonant behaviours of the AR conductance versus the gate voltage.A weak spin-flip scattering leads to a single peak resonance. However, with the spin-flip scattering strength incre…
We calculate the conductance G of a bipolar junction in a graphene nanoribbon, in the high-magnetic field regime where the Hall conductance in the p-doped and n-doped regions is 2e^2/h. In the absence of intervalley scattering, the result G=(e^2/h)(1-cos Phi) depends only on the angle Phi between the valley isospins (= Bloch vectors representing the spinor of the valley polarization) at the two opposite edges. This plateau in the conductance versus Fermi energy is insensitive to electrostatic disorder, while it is destabilized by the dispersionless edge state which may exist at a zigzag bounda…
We provide a semiclassical description of the electronic transport through graphene n-p junctions in the quantum Hall regime. This framework is known to experimentally exhibit conductance plateaus whose origin is still not fully understood. In the magnetic regime (E < vF B), we show the conductance of excited states is essentially zero, while that of the ground state depends on the boundary conditions considered at the edge of the sample. In the electric regime (E > vF B), for a step-like electrostatic potential (abrupt on the scale of the magnetic length), we derive a semiclassical approximat…
Here we address a theoretical study on the behaviour of electronic states of heterojunctions and quantum dots based on carbon nanotubes under magnetic fields. Emphasis is put on the analysis of the local density of states, the conductance, and on the characteristic curves of current versus voltage. The heterostructures are modeled by joining zigzag tubes through single pentagon-heptagon pair defects, and described within a simple tight binding calculation. The conductance is calculated using the Landauer formula in the Green functions formalism. The used theoretical approach incorporates the a…
Transmission of the scalar field through the random medium, represented by the system of randomly distributed dielectric cylinders is calculated numerically. System is mapped to the problem of electronic transport in disordered two-dimensional systems. Universality of the statistical distribution of transmission parameters is analyzed in the metallic and in the localized regimes. In the metallic regime the universality of the transmission statistics in all transparent channels is observed. In the band gaps, we distinguish the disorder induced (Anderson) localization from the tunneling through t…
The formation and rupture of atomic-sized contacts is modelled by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Such nano-contacts are realized in scanning tunnelling microscope and mechanically controlled break junction experiments. These instruments routinely measure the conductance across the nano-sized electrodes as they are brought into contact and separated, permitting conductance traces to be recorded that are plots of conductance versus the distance between the electrodes. One interesting feature of the conductance traces is that for some metals and geometric configurations a jump in the va…
Linear conductance across a large quantum dot via a single level e_0 with large hybridization to the contacts is strongly sensitive to quasi-bound states localized in the dot and weakly coupled to e_0. It oscillates with the gate voltage due to interference of the Fano type. At low temperature and Coulomb blockade, Kondo correlations damp the oscillations on an extended range of gate voltage values, by freezing the occupancy of the e_0 level itself. As a consequence, antiresonances of Fano origin are washed out. The results are in good correspondence with experimental data for a large quantum …
Temperature ($T$) dependent conductance $G = G(T)$ data measured in molecular junctions are routinely taken as evidence for a two-step hopping mechanism. The present paper emphasizes that this is not necessarily the case. A curve of $\ln G$ versus $1/T$ decreasing almost linearly (Arrhenius-like regime) and eventually switching to a nearly horizontal plateau (Sommerfeld regime), or possessing a slope gradually decreasing with increasing $1/T$ is fully compatible with a single-step tunneling mechanism. The results for the dependence of $G$ on $T$ presented include both analytical exact and accu…
A quantum circuit rule for combining quantum interference (QI) effects in the conductive properties of oligo(phenyleneethynylene) (OPE)-type molecules possessing three aromatic rings was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Molecules were of the type X-Y-X, where X represents pyridyl anchors with para (p), meta (m) or ortho (o) connectivities and Y represents a phenyl ring with p and m connectivities. The conductances GXmX (GXpX) of molecules of the form X-m-X (X-p-X), with meta (para) connections in the central ring were predominantly lower (higher), irrespective of the meta, p…
We study the heat transport along an edge state of a two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum Hall regime, in contact to two reservoirs at different temperatures. We consider two exactly solvable models for the edge state coupled to the reservoirs. The first one corresponds to filling $ν=1$ and tunneling coupling to the reservoirs. The second one corresponds to integer or fractional filling of the sequence $ν=1/m$ (with $m$ odd), and capacitive coupling to the reservoirs. In both cases we solve the problem by means of non-equilibrium Green function formalism. We show that heat propagates ch…
We examine the effect of interactions between the electrons on the conductances of some systems of quantum wires with different geometries. The systems include a wire with a stub in the middle, a wire containing a ring which can enclose a magnetic flux, and a system of four wires which are connected in the middle through a fifth wire. Each of the wires is taken to be a weakly interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, and scattering matrices are introduced at all the junctions. Using a renormalization group method developed recently for studying the flow of scattering matrices for interacting syst…
We present a combined theoretical approach to study the nonequilibrium transport properties of nanoscale systems coupled to metallic electrodes and exhibiting strong electron-phonon interactions. We use the Keldysh Green function formalism to generalize beyond linear theory in the applied voltage an equation of motion method and an interpolative self-energy approximation previously developed in equilibrium. We analyze the specific characteristics of inelastic transport appearing in the intensity versus voltage curves and in the conductance, providing qualitative criteria for the sign of the st…
The effect of the barrier on the proximity effect in normal-superconductor junction is analyzed. A general criterion for the barrier, though large, to be effectively transparent, is given. This criterion is applied to both the conductance of a disordered NS junction (reflectionless tunneling) and the density of states across it, showing that both phenomena stem from the same physical effect.
We study the transport through gated GaAS:Si wires of 0.5 micrometer length in the insulating regime and observe transport via elastic tunneling at very low temperature. We describe the mean positive magnetoconductance and the mesoscopic fluctuations of the conductance (versus energy or magnetic field) purely within one electron model without introducing Coulomb blockade considerations.
Phase- and voltage bias-sensitive quasiparticle transport at a double $NIS_1IS_2$ interface is considered. The barriers $I$ range from tunnel to transparent, and the intermediate region $S_1$ has a width comparable to the superconducting coherence length. A phase difference $φ$ is applied to the Josephson junction $S_1IS_2$. The normal and Andreev reflections at the $NIS_1$ interface become $φ$-sensitive, and transport is governed by interferences within the narrow $S_1$ region, both in the normal and anomalous channels. The subgap conductance is separately (energy $E$)- and (phase $φ$)- symme…
This paper reviews recent studies of mesoscopic fluctuations in transport through ballistic quantum dots, emphasizing differences between conduction through open dots and tunneling through nearly isolated dots. Both the open dots and the tunnel-contacted dots show random, repeatable conductance fluctuations with universal statistical proper-ties that are accurately characterized by a variety of theoretical models including random matrix theory, semiclassical methods and nonlinear sigma model calculations. We apply these results in open dots to extract the dephasing rate of electrons within the…
We investigate the phenomenon of reflectionless tunneling in ballistic normal-metal--superconductor (NS) structures, using a semiclassical formalism. It is shown that applied magnetic field and superconducting phase difference both impair the constructive interference leading to this effect, but in a qualitatively different way. This is manifested both in the conductance and in the shot noise properties of the system considered. Unlike diffusive systems, the features of the conductance are sharp, and enable fine spatial control of the current, as well as single channel manipulations. We discus…
We study the Andreev levels, supercurrent and tunnelling conductance in a clean Ising superconductor (ISC)/half metal (HM)/Ising superconductor (ISC) Josephson junction with spin-active interfaces using Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We theoretically demonstrate the effect of spin mixing, spin flipping processes and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of the ISC on Andreev Bound States (ABS) spectra, current phase relation (CPR) and tunnelling conductance in transparent and opaque barrier limit. We witness an additional splitting of the Andreev levels due to SOC of the ISC and $0 - π$ transition for di…
We study non-equilibrium Josephson effect and phase-dependent conductance in three-terminal diffusive interferometers with short arms. We consider strong proximity effect and investigate an interplay of dissipative and Josephson currents co-existing within the same proximity region. In junctions with transparent interfaces, the suppression of the Josephson current appears at rather large voltage, $eV\sim Δ$, and the current vanishes at $eV\geqΔ$. Josephson current inversion becomes possible in junctions with resistive interfaces, where the inversion occurs within a finite interval of the appli…
The electron transport through a three-terminal single-molecular transistor (SMT) is theoretically studied. We find that the differential conductance of the third and weakly coupled terminal versus its voltage matches well with the spectral function versus the energy when certain conditions are met. Particularly, this excellent matching is maintained even for complicated structure of the phonon-assisted side peaks. Thus, this device offers an experimental approach to explore the shape of the phonon-assisted spectral function in detail. In addition we discuss the conditions of a perfect matchin…
The possibility of inducing superconductivity in type-I Weyl semimetal through coupling its surface to a superconductor was investigated. A single crystal of NbP, grown by chemical vapor transport method, was carefully characterized by XRD, EDX, SEM, ARPES techniques and by electron transport measurements. The mobility spectrum of the carriers was determined. For the studies of interface transmission, the (001) surface of the crystal was covered by several hundred nm thick metallic layers of either Pb, or Nb, or In. DC current-voltage characteristics and AC differential conductance through the…
We study the effect of a structural nanoconstriction on the coherent transport properties of otherwise ideal zig-zag-edged infinitely long graphene ribbons. The electronic structure is calculated with the standard one-orbital tight-binding model and the linear conductance is obtained using the Landauer formula. We find that, since the zero-bias current is carried in the bulk of the ribbon, this is very robust with respect to a variety of constriction geometries and edge defects. In contrast, the curve of zero-bias conductance versus gate voltage departs from the $(2n+1) e^2/h$ staircase of the…
We show that tunneling involving bosonic wires and/or boson integer quantum Hall (bIQH) edges is characterized by universal features which are absent in their fermionic counterparts. Considering a pair of minimal geometries, we find a low energy enhancement and a universal high versus zero energy relation for the tunnel conductance that holds for all wire/bIQH edge combinations. Features distinguishing bIQH edges include a current imbalance to chemical potential bias ratio that is quantized despite the lack of conductance quantization in the bIQH edges themselves. The predicted phenomena requi…
