We study the zero-bias conductance through the system of two quantum dots, one of which is embedded directly between the source and drain electrodes, while the second dot is side-coupled to the first one through a tunneling junction. Modeling the system using the two-impurity Anderson model, we compute the temperature-dependence of the conductance in various parameter regimes using the numerical renormalization group. We consider the non-interacting case, where we study the extent of the departure from the conventional Fano resonance line shape at finite temperatures, and the case where the embedded and/or the side-coupled quantum dot is interacting, where we study the consequences of the coexistence of the Kondo and Fano effects. If the side-coupled dot is very weakly interacting, the occupancy changes by two when the on-site energy crosses the Fermi level and a Fano-resonance-like shape is observed. If the interaction on the side-coupled dot is sizeable, the occupancy changes only by one and a very different line-shape results, which is strongly and characteristically temperature dependent. These results suggest an intriguing alternative interpretation of the recent experimental results study of the transport properties of the side-coupled double quantum dot [Sasaki et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 266806 (2009)]: the observed Fano-like conductance anti-resonance may, in fact, result from the two-stage Kondo effect in the regime where the experimental temperature is between the higher and the lower Kondo temperature.
In the present work, we investigate the electronic transport through a T-shape double quantum dot system coupled to two normal leads and to one superconducting lead. We explore the interplay between Kondo and Andreev states due to proximity effects. We find that Kondo resonance is modified by the Andreev bound states, which manifest through Fano antiresonances in the local density of states of the embedded quantum dot and normal transmission. This means that there is a correlation between Andreev bound states and Fano resonances that is robust under the influence of high electronic correlation…
We theoretically examine the transport through an Aharonov-Bohm ring with an embedded quantum dot (QD), the so-called QD interferometer, to address two controversial issues regarding the shape of the Coulomb peaks and measurement of the transmission phase shift through a QD. We extend a previous model [B. R. Bulka and P. Stefanski, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5128 (2001); W. Hofstetter, J. Konig, and H. Schoeller, ibid. 87, 156803 (2001)] to consider multiple conduction channels in two external leads, L and R. We introduce a parameter p_α (|p_α| \le 1) to characterize a connection between the two arm…
In normal metals, the magnetic moment of impurity spins disappears below a characteristic Kondo temperature, TK, where coupling with the conduction-band electrons produces an entangled state that screens the local moment. In contrast, moments embedded in insulators remain unscreened at all temperatures. This raises the question about the fate of magnetic moments in intermediate, pseudogap systems, such as graphene. In these systems theory predicts a quantum phase-transition at a critical coupling strength which separates a local magnetic-moment phase from a Kondo screened phase. However, attem…
We investigate a Rabi-Kondo model describing an optically driven two-channel quantum dot device featuring a non-Fermi-liquid Kondo effect. Optically induced Rabi oscillation between the valence and conduction levels of the dot gives rise to a two-stage Kondo effect: Primary screening of the local spin is followed by secondary nonequilibrium screening of the local orbital degree of freedom. Using bosonization arguments and the numerical renormalization group, we compute the dot emission spectrum and residual entropy. Remarkably, both exhibit two-stage Kondo screening with non-Fermi-liquid prope…
When a magnetic impurity exists in a metal, conduction electrons form a spin cloud that screens the impurity spin. This basic phenomenon is called the Kondo effect. Contrary to electric charge screening, the spin screening cloud occurs quantum coherently, forming spin-singlet entanglement with the impurity. Although the spins interact locally around the impurity, the cloud can spread out over micrometers. The Kondo cloud has never been detected to date, and its existence, a fundamental aspect of the Kondo effect, remains as a long-standing controversial issue. Here we present experimental evid…
In normal metals, the magnetic-moment of impurity-spins disappears below a characteristic Kondo temperature, TK. This marks the formation of a polarized cloud of conduction band electrons that screen the magnetic moment . In contrast, moments embedded in insulators remain unscreened at all temperatures. This raises the question about the fate of magnetic-moments in intermediate, pseudogap systems, such as graphene. In these systems coupling between the local moment and the conduction band electrons is predicted to drive a quantum phase-transition between a local-moment phase and a Kondo-screen…
We report on a novel exchange mechanism, mediating the Kondo screening, in a correlated double quantum dot structure in the proximity of superconductor, stemming from nonlocal Andreev reflection processes. We estimate its strength perturbatively and corroborate analytical predictions with accurate numerical renormalization group calculations using an effective model for the superconductor-proximized nanostructure. We demonstrate that superconductor-induced exchange leads to a two-stage Kondo screening. We determine the dependence of the Kondo temperature on the coupling to superconductor and p…
We have investigated the Kondo physics of a single magnetic impurity embedded in multi-Dirac (Weyl) node fermionic systems. By using a generic effective model for the host material and employing a numerical renormalization group approach we access the low temperature behavior of the system, identifying the existence of Kondo screening in single-, double-, and triple-Dirac (Weyl) node models. We find that in any multi-Dirac node systems the low-energy regime lies within one of the known classes of pseudogap Kondo problem, extensively studied in the literature. Kondo screening is also observed f…

Although the single-impurity Kondo physics has already been well understood, the understanding of the Kondo lattice problem where a dense array of local moments couples to the conduction electrons is still far from complete. The ability of creating and tuning the Kondo lattice in non-f-electron systems will be great helpful for further understanding the Kondo lattice behavior. Here we show that the Pb intercalation in the charge-density-wave-driven narrow-electronic-band system 1T-TaS2 induces a transition from the insulating gap to a sharp Kondo resonance in the scanning tunneling microscopy …
The topological Kondo effect arises when conduction electrons in metallic leads are coupled to a mesoscopic superconducting island with Majorana fermions. Working with its minimal setup, we study the lead electron local tunneling density of states in its thermally smeared form motivated by scanning tunneling microscopy, focusing on the component $ρ_{2 k_F}$ oscillating at twice the Fermi wavenumber. As a function of temperature $T$ and at zero bias, we find that the amplitude of $ρ_{2 k_F}$ is nonmonotonic, whereby with decreasing $T$ an exponential thermal-length-controlled increase, potentia…
We derive a kinetic theory capable of dealing both with large spin-orbit coupling and Kondo screening in dilute magnetic alloys. We obtain the collision integral non-perturbatively and uncover a contribution proportional to the momentum derivative of the impurity scattering S-matrix. The latter yields an important correction to the spin diffusion and spin-charge conversion coefficients, and fully captures the so-called side-jump process without resorting to the Born approximation (which fails for resonant scattering), or to otherwise heuristic derivations. We apply our kinetic theory to a quan…
