The Kondo effect is theoretically studied in a quantum dot embedded in a mesoscopic ring. The ring is connected to two external leads, which enables the transport measurement. Using the "poor man's" scaling method, we obtain analytical expressions of the Kondo temperature T_K as a function of the Aharonov-Bohm phase ϕby the magnetic flux penetrating the ring. In this Kondo problem, there are two characteristic lengths. One is the screening length of the charge fluctuation, L_c=\hbar v_F/ |ε_0|, where v_F is the Fermi velocity and ε_0 is the energy level in the quantum dot. The other is the screening length of spin fluctuation, i.e., size of Kondo screening cloud, L_K=\hbar v_F/ T_K. We obtain different expressions of T_K(ϕ) for (i) L_c \ll L_K \ll L, (ii) L_c \ll L \ll L_K, and (iii) L \ll L_c \ll L_K, where L is the size of the ring. T_K is markedly modulated by ϕin cases (ii) and (iii), whereas it hardly depends on ϕin case (i). We also derive logarithmic corrections to the conductance at temperature T\gg T_K and an analytical expression of the conductance at T\ll T_K, on the basis of the scaling analysis.
We study the effect of mesoscopic fluctuations on a magnetic impurity coupled to a spatially confined electron gas with a temperature in the mesoscopic range (i.e. between the mean level spacing $Δ$ and the Thouless energy $E_{\rm Th}$). Comparing ``poor-man's scaling'' with exact Quantum Monte Carlo, we find that for temperatures larger than the Kondo temperature, many aspects of the fluctuations can be captured by the perturbative technique. Using this technique in conjunction with semi-classical approximations, we are able to calculate the mesoscopic fluctuations for a wide variety of syste…
We study the transport behavior induced by a small bias voltage through a quantum dot connected to one-channel finite-size wires. We describe the quantum dot by the Hubbard-Kondo which is solved by means of a quantum Monte Carlo method. We investigate the effect of a magnetic field applied at the quantum dot in the Kondo regime. We identify changes in the behavior of mesoscopic oscillations introduced by the magnetic field that have an analogous behavior to those observed as a function of the temperature.
Properties of the Kondo effect in quantum dots depend sensitively on the coupling parameters and so on the realization of the quantum dot -- the Kondo temperature itself becomes a mesoscopic quantity. Assuming chaotic dynamics in the dot, we use random matrix theory to calculate the distribution of both the Kondo temperature and the conductance in the Coulomb blockade regime. We study two experimentally relevant cases: leads with single channels and leads with many channels. In the single-channel case, the distribution of the conductance is very wide as $T_K$ fluctuates on a logarithmic scale.…
We consider the low temperature regime of the mesoscopic Kondo problem, and in particular the relevance of a Fermi-liquid description of this regime. Using two complementary approaches -- a mean field slave fermion approximation on the one hand and a Fermi-liquid description "à la Nozières" supplemented by an argument of separation of scale on the other hand -- we show that they both lead to (essentially) the same quasi-particle spectra, providing in this way a strong indication that they both give the correct physics of this regime.
We consider electrons confined to a quantum dot interacting antiferromagnetically with a spin-$\half$ Kondo impurity. The electrons also interact among themselves ferromagnetically with a dimensionless coupling $\tilde{J}$, where $\tilde{J}=1$ denotes the bulk Stoner transition. We show that as $\tilde{J}$ approaches 1 there is a regime with enhanced Kondo correlations, followed by one where the Kondo effect is destroyed and impurity is spin polarized opposite to the dot electrons. The most striking signature of the first, Stoner-enhanced Kondo regime, is that a Zeeman field increases the Kond…
The observation of the Kondo effect in quantum dots has provided new opportunities to finally observe the controversial Kondo screening cloud. We study how screening cloud effects appear in the conductance through a quantum wire containing a quantum dot when the length of the wire is comparable to the size of the screening cloud.
We clarify the difference between entangled and nonentangled two-reservoir mesoscopic Kondo systems and reveal the reason why theories using the Keldysh formalism, quantum Monte Carlo calculations, and the renormalization group approaches cannot explain the line shapes of tunneling conductance of mesoscopic Kondo systems measured by using a two-terminal setup but explain those of a three-terminal setup. We emphasize that the previous theories study a nonentangled system, while real two-reservoir mesoscopic Kondo systems are entangled systems in which two reservoirs are within the coherent regi…
We study the transport through a quantum dot, in the Kondo Coulomb blockade valley, embedded in a mesoscopic device with finite wires. The quantization of states in the circuit that hosts the quantum dot gives rise to finite size effects. These effects make the conductance sensitive to the ratio of the Kondo screening length to the wires length and provide a way of measuring the Kondo cloud. We present results obtained with the numerical renormalization group for a wide range of physically accessible parameters.
We develop a theoretical proposal for the charge Kondo effect in mesoscopic normal-superconductor-normal heterostructures, where the superconducting gap exceeds the electrostatic charging energy. Charge-Kondo correlations in these devices alter the conventional temperature-dependence of Andreev reflection and electron cotunneling. We predict typical Kondo temperatures of $\gtrsim 10 {\rm mK}$, and suggest experimental architectures that combine superconducting charge-qubits with semiconducting nanowires at cryogenic temperatures.
We analyze the screening of a magnetic quantum dot with spin 1/2 coupled to two helical liquids. Interestingly, we find two qualitatively different sets of Toulouse points, i.e., nontrivial parameters for which we can solve the two channel Kondo model exactly. This enables us to calculate the temperature and voltage dependent Kondo screening cloud, which develops oscillations for an applied spin voltage $μ_s$. Such a spin voltage can be conveniently applied by a charge bias in a four-terminal helical liquid setup.
We study how finite size effects may appear when a quantum dot in the Kondo Coulomb blockade regime is embedded into a mesoscopic device with finite wires. These finite size effects appear when the size of the mesoscopic device containing the quantum dot is of the order of the size of Kondo cloud and affect all thermodynamic and transport properties of the Kondo quantum dot. We also generalize our results to the experimentally relevant case where the wires contain several transverse modes/channels. Our results are based on perturbation theory, Fermi liquid theory and slave boson mean field the…
We analyze the transport properties of two artificial magnetic impurities coupled togethervia a tunable RKKY interaction mediated by conduction electrons of a finite size one dimensional wire. We show that the sign of the RKKY interaction can be controlled by gating the wire. We investigate the interplay between finite size effects and RKKY interaction and found that the two artificial impurities start to interact each-other as soon as the Kondo screening cloud length becomes larger that the length of the wire. This should allow to give a lower experimental estimate of the Kondo screening clou…
We study the non-equilibrium noise in mesoscopic diffusive wires hosting magnetic impurities. We find that the shot-noise to current ratio develops a peak at intermediate source-drain biases of the order of the Kondo temperature. The enhanced impurity contribution at intermediate biases is also manifested in the effective distribution. The predicted peak represents increased inelastic scattering rate at the non-equilibrium Kondo crossover.
We report on a Kondo correlated quantum dot connected to two-dimensional leads where we demonstrate the renormalization of the g-factor in the pure Zeeman case i.e, for magnetic fields parallel to the plane of the quantum dot. For the same system we study the influence of orbital effects by investigating the quantum Hall regime i.e. a perpendicular magnetic field is applied. In this case an unusual behaviour of the suppression of the Kondo effect and of the split zero-bias anomaly is observed. The splitting decreases with magnetic field and shows discontinuous changes which are attributed to t…
We study the influence of a magnetic impurity or ultrasmall quantum dot on the charge persistent current of a mesoscopic ring. The system consists of electrons in a one-dimensional ring threaded by spin-dependent Aharonov-Bohm/Casher fluxes, coupled via an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction to a localized electron. By passing to a basis of electron states with definite parities, the problem is mapped onto a Kondo model for the even-parity channel plus free electrons in the odd-parity channel. States of opposite parities decouple for values of the flux corresponding to periodic or antiperio…
The system described in this work consists of a quantum dot inserted in a mesoscopic ring threaded by a magnetic flux. Our aim is to present a complete description for this device and to predict the physics of a experiment with these features. We have proposed a model that takes into account the conditions that are usual in experiments with quantum dots and mesoscopic systems. In order to solve the model, we develop a methodology to find the Green's functions of the system by means of proper approximations. This system presents persistent currents as a function of a gate potential applied to t…
Phase-sensitive transport through a quantum dot coupled to an Aharonov-Bohm ring is analyzed. In this geometry the spectral density of states is directly related to the conductance. It is shown that the Kondo resonance depends on the phase and on the total number of electrons (modulo 4) in the mesoscopic ring. The effect of the discrete level spacing in the ring and of the coupling to the electrical leads is discussed.
We investigate how the Kondo screening cloud builds up as a function of space and time. Starting from an impurity spin decoupled from the conduction band, the Kondo coupling is switched on at time t=0. We work at the Toulouse point where one can obtain exact analytical results for the ensuing spin dynamics at both zero and nonzero temperature T. For t>0 the Kondo screening cloud starts building up in the wake of the impurity spin being transported to infinity. In this buildup process the impurity spin--conduction band spin susceptibility shows a sharp light cone due to causality, while the cor…
The magnitude and phase of the transmission amplitude of a multi-level quantum dot is calculated for the mesoscopic regime of level spacing large compared to level width. The interplay between Kondo correlations and the influence by neighboring levels is discussed. As in the single-level case, the Kondo plateaus of magnitude and phase disappear with increasing temperature. At certain gate voltages, ``stationary'' points are found at which the transmission phase is independent of temperature. Depending on the mesoscopic parameters of the adjacent levels (like relative sign and magnitude of tunn…
We study the mesoscopic Kondo box, consisting of a quantum spin 1/2 interacting with a chaotic electronic bath as can be realized by a magnetic impurity coupled to electrons on a quantum dot, using a mean-field approach for the Kondo interaction. Its umerical efficiency allows us to analyze the Kondo temperature, the local magnetic susceptibility, and the conductance statistics for a large number of samples with energy levels obtained by random matrix theory. We see pronounced parity effects in the average values and in the probability distributions, depending on an even and odd electronic occ…
The persistent current through a quantum dot inserted in a mesoscopic ring of length L is studied. A cluster representing the dot and its vicinity is exactly diagonalized and embedded into the rest of the ring. The Kondo resonance provides a new channel for the current to flow. It is shown that due to scaling properties, the persistent current at the Kondo regime is enhanced relative to the current flowing either when the dot is at resonance or along a perfect ring of same length. In the Kondo regime the current scales as $L^{-1/2}$, unlike the $L^{-1}$ scaling of a perfect ring. We discuss th…
The tunneling conductances of a quantum point contact and a magnetized atom adsorbed on an insulating layer above a metallic substrate are obtained by considering the coherent transport of the entangled and nonentangled Kondo singlets, and these are compared with the experimental results. Spins of the entangled Kondo singlet flow unidirectionally in a sequential up-and-down manner. This transport does not follow linear response theory. The nonentangled Kondo singlet performs resonant tunneling through a coherent transport channel and yields coherent side peaks at a finite bias. The coherent tr…
We study the persistent current circulating along a mesoscopic ring with a dot side-coupled to it when threaded by a magnetic field. A cluster including the dot and its vicinity is diagonalized and embedded into the rest of the system. The result is numerically exact. We show that a ring of any size can be in the Kondo regime, although for small sizes it depends upon the magnetic flux. In the Kondo regime, the current can be a smooth or a strongly dependent function of the gate potential according to the structure of occupation of the highest energetic electrons of the system.
An interacting quantum dot inserted in a mesoscopic ring is investigated. A variational ansatz is employed to describe the ground state of the system in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm flux. It is shown that, for even number of electrons with the energy level spacing smaller than the Kondo temperature, the persistent current has a value similar to that of a perfect ring with the same radius. On the other hand, for a ring with odd number electrons, the persistent current is found to be strongly suppressed compared to that of an ideal ring, which implies the suppression of the Kondo-resonant t…
We study the non-equilibrium regime of the Kondo effect in a quantum dot laterally coupled to a narrow wire. We observe a split Kondo resonance when a finite bias voltage is imposed across the wire. The splitting is attributed to the creation of a double-step Fermi distribution function in the wire. Kondo correlations are strongly suppressed when the voltage across the wire exceeds the Kondo temperature. A perpendicular magnetic field enables us to selectively control the coupling between the dot and the two Fermi seas in the wire. Already at fields of order 0.1 T only the Kondo resonance asso…
We study the Kondo effect of a quantum dot placed in a complex mesoscopic structure. Assuming that electronic interactions are taking place solely on the dot, and focusing on the infinite Hubbard interaction limit, we use a decoupling scheme to obtain an explicit analytic approximate expression for the dot Green function, which fulfills certain Fermi-liquid relations at zero temperature. The details of the complex structure enter into this expression only via the self-energy for the non-interacting case. The effectiveness of the expression is demonstrated for the single impurity Anderson model…
We report the observation of an anomalous magnetoresistance in extremely dilute quasi-one-dimensional AuFe wires at low temperatures, along with a hysteretic background at low fields. The Kondo resistivity does not show the unitarity limit down to the lowest temperature, implying uncompensated spin states. We suggest that the anomalous magnetoresistance may be understood as the interference correction from the accumulation of geometric phase in the conduction electron wave function around the localized impurity spin.
We consider electron transport along a single-mode channel which is in contact, via tunnel junctions in its walls, with two quantum dots. Electron tunneling to and from the dots contributes to the electron backscattering, and thus modifies the channel conductance. If the dots carry spin, the channel conductance becomes temperature dependent due to the Kondo effect. The two-dot device geometry allows for a formation of S=1 localized spin due to the indirect exchange interaction, called Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction. This device offers a possibility to study the crossover between ful…
We study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot embedded in a mesoscopic ring taking into account intradot spin-flip scattering $R$. Based on the finite-$U$ slave-boson mean-field approach, we find that the Kondo peak in the density of states is split into two peaks by this coherent spin-flip transition, which is responsible for some interesting features of the Kondo-assisted persistent current circulating the ring: (1) strong suppression and crossover to a sine function form with increasing $R$; (2) appearance of a "hump" in the $R$-dependent behavior for odd parity. $R$-induced reverse of the per…
A dilute concentration of magnetic impurities can dramatically affect the transport properties of an otherwise pure metal. This phenomenon, known as the Kondo effect, originates from the interactions of individual magnetic impurities with the conduction electrons. Nearly a decade ago, the Kondo effect was observed in a new system, in which the magnetic moment stems from a single unpaired spin in a lithographically defined quantum dot, or artificial atom. The discovery of the Kondo effect in artificial atoms spurred a revival in the study of Kondo physics, due in part to the unprecedented contr…
Nanoscale physics and dynamical mean field theory have both generated increased interest in complex quantum impurity problems and so have focused attention on the need for flexible quantum impurity solvers. Here we demonstrate that the mapping of single quantum impurity problems onto spin-chains can be exploited to yield a powerful and extremely flexible impurity solver. We implement this cluster algorithm explicitly for the Anderson and Kondo Hamiltonians, and illustrate its use in the ``mesoscopic Kondo problem''. To study universal Kondo physics, a large ratio between the effective bandwidt…
Shot noise in diffusive mesoscopic conductors, at finite observation frequencies $ω$ (comparable to the reciprocal Thouless time $τ_T^{-1}$), is analyzed with an account of screening. At low frequencies, the well-known result $S_I(ω)=2eI/3$ is recovered. This result is valid at arbitrary $ωτ_T$ for wide conductors longer than the screening length. However, at least for two very different systems, namely, wide and short conductors, and thin conductors over a close ground plane, noise approaches a different fundamental level, $S_I(ω) = eI$, at $ωτ_T\gg 1$.
The Kondo effect involves the formation of a spin singlet by a magnetic impurity and conduction electrons. It is characterized by a low temperature scale, the Kondo temperature, $T_K$, and an associated long length scale, $ξ_K = \hbar v_F/(k_BT_K)$ where $v_F$ is the Fermi velocity. This Kondo length is often estimated theoretically to be in the range of .1 to 1 microns but such a long characteristic length scale has never been observed experimentally. In this review, I will examine how $ξ_K$ appears as a crossover scale when one probes either the dependence of physical quantities an distance …
In normal metals, the magnetic moment of impurity spins disappears below a characteristic Kondo temperature, TK, where coupling with the conduction-band electrons produces an entangled state that screens the local moment. In contrast, moments embedded in insulators remain unscreened at all temperatures. This raises the question about the fate of magnetic moments in intermediate, pseudogap systems, such as graphene. In these systems theory predicts a quantum phase-transition at a critical coupling strength which separates a local magnetic-moment phase from a Kondo screened phase. However, attem…
We present measurements of the magnetoconductance of long and narrow quasi one-dimensional gold wires containing magnetic iron impurities in a temperature range extending from $15 $mK to $4.2 $K. The dephasing rate extracted from the weak antilocalisation shows a pronounced plateau in a temperature region of $300 $mK - $800 $mK, associated with the phase breaking due to the Kondo effect. Below the Kondo temperature the dephasing rate decreases linearly with temperature, in contradiction with standard Fermi-liquid theory. Our data suggest that the formation of a spin glass due to the interactio…
We investigate a Rabi-Kondo model describing an optically driven two-channel quantum dot device featuring a non-Fermi-liquid Kondo effect. Optically induced Rabi oscillation between the valence and conduction levels of the dot gives rise to a two-stage Kondo effect: Primary screening of the local spin is followed by secondary nonequilibrium screening of the local orbital degree of freedom. Using bosonization arguments and the numerical renormalization group, we compute the dot emission spectrum and residual entropy. Remarkably, both exhibit two-stage Kondo screening with non-Fermi-liquid prope…
The Kondo temperature of a magnetic impurity in a weakly disordered metal is distributed due to the randomness in the local exchange coupling, and the local electronic density of states (LDOS). We show that in a closed, phase coherent metal particle the resulting distribution of $T_K$ is strongly asymmetric and scales with the mean level spacing $Δ$. Its width is $2 \sqrt{Δ/βT_K}$, where $Δ$ is the mean level spacing, and $β=1,2$, with, without time reversal symmetry, respectively. Increasing the density of magnetic impurities, the distribution of Kondo temperatures (DKT) is found to become mo…
We study nonequilibrium generation of spin-dependent transport through a single-level quantum dot embedded in a ring with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We consider nonmagnetic systems, involving no magnetic field nor ferromagnetic leads. It is theoretically predicted that large spin-dependent current occurs as a combined effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the Kondo effect, and nonequilibrium effect, without using magnetic field or material. The phenomenon is viewed as a new nonequilibrium correlation effect that disappears when either interaction or finite bias is absent. We show h…
We propose that the finite size of the Kondo screening cloud, xi_K, can be probed by measuring the charge quantization in a one-dimensional system coupled to a small quantum dot. When the chemical potential in the system is varied at zero temperature, one should observe charge steps that are controlled by the Kondo effect when the system size L is comparable to xi_K. We show that, if the standard Kondo model is used, the ratio between the widths of the Coulomb blockade valleys with odd or even number of electrons is a universal scaling function of xi_K/L.
We consider a flux-threaded Aharonov-Bohm ring with an embedded quantum dot coupled to two normal leads. The local Rashba spin-orbit interaction acting on the dot electrons leads to a spin-dependent phase factor in addition to the Aharonov-Bohm phase caused by the external flux. Using the numerical renormalization group method, we find a splitting of the Kondo resonance at the Fermi level which can be compensated by an external magnetic field. To fully understand the nature of this compensation effect, we perform a scaling analysis and derive an expression for the effective magnetic field. The…
We investigate various aspects of the Kondo singlet in a quantum dot (QD) electrostatically coupled to a mesoscopic detector. The two subsystems are represented by an entangled state between the Kondo singlet and the charge-dependent detector state. We show that the phase-coherence of the Kondo singlet is destroyed in a way that is sensitive to the charge-state information restored both in the magnitude and in the phase of the scattering coefficients of the detector. We also introduce the notion of the `conditional evolution' of the Kondo singlet under projective measurement on the detector. O…
When a magnetic impurity exists in a metal, conduction electrons form a spin cloud that screens the impurity spin. This basic phenomenon is called the Kondo effect. Contrary to electric charge screening, the spin screening cloud occurs quantum coherently, forming spin-singlet entanglement with the impurity. Although the spins interact locally around the impurity, the cloud can spread out over micrometers. The Kondo cloud has never been detected to date, and its existence, a fundamental aspect of the Kondo effect, remains as a long-standing controversial issue. Here we present experimental evid…
We present measurements of the magnetoresistance of long and narrow quasi one-dimensional gold wires containing magnetic iron impurities. The electron phase coherence time extracted from the weak antilocalisation shows a pronounced plateau in a temperature region of 300 mK - 800 mK, associated with the phase breaking due to the Kondo effect. Below the Kondo temperature, the phase coherence time increases, as expected in the framework of Kondo physics. At much lower temperatures, the phase coherence time saturates again, in contradiction with standard Fermi liquid theory. In the same temperatur…
Tunnelling conductances observed for mesoscopic Kondo systems exhibit a zero-bias peak and two coherent side peaks. The former peak is usually understood as a Kondo effect and the latter side peak is recently clarified as the effect of inter-reservoir coherence. However, fitting the experimental $dI/dV$ line shapes, where $I$ and $V$ denote the current and bias voltage, respectively, has not been performed theoretically. Here, we fit the entire line shape range of the tunnelling conductance observed for a quantum dot, quantum point contact, and magnetized atom adsorbed on an insulating layer c…
In normal metals, the magnetic-moment of impurity-spins disappears below a characteristic Kondo temperature, TK. This marks the formation of a polarized cloud of conduction band electrons that screen the magnetic moment . In contrast, moments embedded in insulators remain unscreened at all temperatures. This raises the question about the fate of magnetic-moments in intermediate, pseudogap systems, such as graphene. In these systems coupling between the local moment and the conduction band electrons is predicted to drive a quantum phase-transition between a local-moment phase and a Kondo-screen…
In this work we use the Slave Boson Mean Field Approximation at finite U to study the effects of spin-spin correlations in the transport properties of two quantum dots coupled in series to metallic leads. Different quantum regimes of this system are studied in a wide range of parameter space. The main aspects related to the interplay between the half-filling Kondo effect and the antiferromagnetic correlation between the quantum dots are reviewed. Slave boson results for conductance, local density of states in the quantum dots, and the renormalized energy parameters, are presented. As a differe…
Based on the finite $U$ slave boson method, we have investigated the effect of Rashba spin-orbit(SO) coupling on the persistent charge and spin currents in mesoscopic ring with an Anderson impurity. It is shown that the Kondo effect will decrease the magnitude of the persistent charge and spin currents in this side-coupled Anderson impurity case. In the presence of SO coupling, the persistent currents change drastically and oscillate with the strength of SO coupling. The SO coupling will suppress the Kondo effect and restore the abrupt jumps of the persistent currents. It is also found that a …
We study the persistent currents induced by both the Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher effects in a one-dimensional mesoscopic ring coupled to a side-branch quantum dot at Kondo resonance. For privileged values of the Aharonov-Bohm-Casher fluxes, the problem can be mapped onto an integrable model, exactly solvable by a Bethe ansatz. In the case of a pure magnetic Aharonov-Bohm flux, we find that the presence of the quantum dot has no effect on the persistent current. In contrast, the Kondo resonance interferes with the spin-dependent Aharonov-Casher effect to induce a current which, in the str…
In the present work we provide an easily accessible way to achieve the singlet-triplet Kondo effect in a hybrid system consisting of a quantum point contact (QPC) coupled to an electronic cavity. We show that by activating the coupling between the QPC and cavity, a zero-bias anomaly occurs in a low conductance regime, a coexistence of zero-bias and finite-bias anomaly (FBA) in a medium conductance regime, and a FBA-only anomaly in a high conductance regime. The latter two observations are due to the singlet-triplet Kondo effect.
We report on a novel exchange mechanism, mediating the Kondo screening, in a correlated double quantum dot structure in the proximity of superconductor, stemming from nonlocal Andreev reflection processes. We estimate its strength perturbatively and corroborate analytical predictions with accurate numerical renormalization group calculations using an effective model for the superconductor-proximized nanostructure. We demonstrate that superconductor-induced exchange leads to a two-stage Kondo screening. We determine the dependence of the Kondo temperature on the coupling to superconductor and p…
We consider a Kondo spin that is coupled antiferromagnetically to a large chaotic quantum dot. Such a dot is described by the so-called universal Hamiltonian and its electrons are interacting via a ferromagnetic exchange interaction. We derive an effective Hamiltonian in the limit of strong Kondo coupling, where the screened Kondo spin effectively removes one electron from the dot. We find that the exchange coupling constant in this reduced dot (with one less electron) is renormalized and that new interaction terms appear beyond the conventional terms of the strong-coupling limit. The eigenene…
A theory of non-equilibrium (``shot'') noise and high frequency conductance in diffusive mesoscopic conductors with screening is presented. Detailed results are obtained for two simple geometries, for both large and short electron-electron scattering length $l_{ee}$, at frequencies of the order of the inverse Thouless time $1/τ_T$. The conductance and the noise are found to exhibit significant frequency dependence. For $L \ll l_{ee}$, the high-frequency ($ωτ_T \gg 1$) shot noise spectral density $S_I(ω)$ approaches a finite value between $2eI/3$ and $2eI$, depending on the screening properties…
We analyse a simple setup in which a quantum dot is strongly connected to a metallic grain or finite size wire and weakly connected to two normal leads. The Kondo screening cloud essentially develops in the strongly coupled grain whereas the two weakly connected reservoirs can be used as transport probes. Since the transport channels and the screening channels are almost decoupled, such a setup allows an easier access to the measure of finite-size Kondo effects.
We study the zero-bias conductance through the system of two quantum dots, one of which is embedded directly between the source and drain electrodes, while the second dot is side-coupled to the first one through a tunneling junction. Modeling the system using the two-impurity Anderson model, we compute the temperature-dependence of the conductance in various parameter regimes using the numerical renormalization group. We consider the non-interacting case, where we study the extent of the departure from the conventional Fano resonance line shape at finite temperatures, and the case where the em…
Recently we have developed a theory of Keldysh formalism for mesoscopic systems. The resulting nonequilibrium Kubo formula for differential conductance makes it possible to propose the new formula of shot noise $S_h$, and thus to study shot noise in correlated systems at any temperature and any bias voltage. Employing this new approach, we analyze shot noise in the Kondo regime through a quantum dot for the symmetric case at zero temperature. Using the renormalized perturbation theory, we prove that in the leading order of bias voltage $S_h$ equal to noise power at zero temperature conventiona…
The effect of the Coulomb-interaction on persistent currents in disordered mesoscopic metal rings threaded by a magnetic flux $ϕ$ is studied numerically. We use the simplest form of ``self-consistent'' Hartree theory, where the spatial variations of the self-consistent Hartree potential are ignored. In this approximation the self-consistent Hartree energies are simply obtained by diagonalizing the non-interacting system via the Lanczos method and then calculating the (disorder-dependent) particle number on the ring self-consistently. In the diffusive regime we find that the variance of the tot…
We have investigated the Kondo physics of a single magnetic impurity embedded in multi-Dirac (Weyl) node fermionic systems. By using a generic effective model for the host material and employing a numerical renormalization group approach we access the low temperature behavior of the system, identifying the existence of Kondo screening in single-, double-, and triple-Dirac (Weyl) node models. We find that in any multi-Dirac node systems the low-energy regime lies within one of the known classes of pseudogap Kondo problem, extensively studied in the literature. Kondo screening is also observed f…
