An SU(2) gauge theory is broken to U(1) by an adjoint scalar to produce magnetic monopoles. At a lower scale, this U(1) is further broken by a fundamental scalar to produce tubes of magnetic flux. We dualize the resulting theory to write an effective theory in terms of the macroscopic string variables. The monopoles are attached to the ends of the strings, and the flux is confined in the tubes.
We apply duality transformation to the Abelian Higgs model in 3+1 dimensions in the presence of electrons coupled to the gauge field. The Higgs field is in the symmetry broken phase, where flux strings can form. Dualization brings in an antisymmetric tensor potential $B_{μν}\,$, which couples to the electrons through a nonlocal interaction which can be interpreted as a coupling to the spin current. It also couples to the string worldsheet and gives rise to a string Higgs mechanism via the condensation of flux strings. In the phase where the $B_{μν}$ field is massless, the nonlocal interaction …
I review recent work on computing radiative corrections to non-abelian gauge couplings in four-dimensional heterotic vacua with spontaneously broken supersymmetry. The prototype models can be considered as K3 surfaces with additional Scherk-Schwarz fluxes inducing the spontaneous $\mathcal{N}=2 \to \mathcal{N}=0$ breaking. Remarkably, although the gauge thresholds are no longer BPS protected and receive contributions also from the excitations of the RNS sector, their difference is still exactly computable and universal. Based on a talk presented at the DISCRETE 2014 conference at King's Colleg…
We study modular symmetry anomalies in four-dimensional low-energy effective field theory, which is derived from six-dimensional supersymmetric $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory by magnetic flux compactification. The gauge symmetry $U(N)$ is broken to $U(N_a) \times U(N_b)$ by magnetic fluxes. It is found that Abelian subgroup of the modular symmetry corresponding to discrete part of $U(1)$ can be anomalous, but other elements independent of $U(1)$ in the modular symmetry are always anomaly-free.
We investigate the infinite-distance properties of families of unstable flux vacua in string theory with broken supersymmetry. To this end, we employ a generalized notion of distance in the moduli space and we build a holographic description for the non-perturbative regime of the tunneling cascade in terms of a renormalization group flow. In one limit we recover an exponentially light tower of Kaluza-Klein states, while in the opposite limit we find a tower of higher-spin excitations of D1-branes, realizing the emergent string proposal. In particular, the holographic description includes a fre…
We review the main results of our investigations motivated by the tadpole potentials of ten-dimensional strings with broken supersymmetry. While these are at best partial indications, it is hard to resist the feeling that they do capture some lessons of String Theory. For example, these very tadpole potentials lead to weak-string-coupling cosmologies that appear to provide clues on the onset of the inflation from an initial fast roll. The transition, if accessible to us, would offer a natural explanation for the lack of power manifested by the CMB at large angular scales. In addition, the same…
We study quantum chromodynamics including the two-index symmetric or anti-symmetric quark (QCD(Sym/ASym)) on small $\mathbb{R}^2\times T^2$ with a suitable magnetic flux. We first discuss the 't Hooft anomaly of these theories and claim that discrete chiral symmetry should be spontaneously broken completely to satisfy the anomaly matching condition. The $T^2$ compactification with the magnetic flux preserves the 't Hooft anomaly, and the $2$d effective theory is constrained by the same anomaly of $4$d QCD(Sym/ASym). We demonstrate the spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry using the dilute g…
In order to study the detailed dynamics and associated non-perturbative features of QCD, a dual version of the color gauge theory based on the topologically viable homogeneous fiber bundle approach has been analysed taking into account its magnetic symmetry structure. In the dynamically broken phase of magnetic symmetry, the associated flux tube structure on a S 2 -sphere in the magnetically condensed state of the dual QCD vacuum has been analyzed for the profiles of the color electric field using flux quantization and stability conditions. The color electric field has its intimate association…
We investigate the flux-tube joining two equal and opposite electric charges using the dual Ginzburg-Landau model of superconductivity. The model is supplemented with an additional scalar field carrying a non-Abelian global symmetry, broken in the vortex cores. The presence of orientational moduli makes the flux tube non-Abelian. We perform a detailed study of the low energy theory of this soliton. We also analyze the solution representing superconducting droplets in the presence of the monopole anti - monopole pair.
We propose a new inflation scenario in flux compactification, where a zero mode scalar field of extra components of the higher dimensional gauge field is identified with an inflaton. The scalar field is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson of spontaneously broken translational symmetry in compactified spaces. The inflaton potential is non-local and finite, which is protected against the higher dimensional non-derivative local operators by quantum gravity corrections thanks to the gauge symmetry in higher dimensions and the shift symmetry originated from the translation in extra spaces. We give an ex…
Free massless scalars have a shift symmetry. This is usually broken by gauge and Yukawa interactions, such that quantum corrections induce a quadratically divergent mass term. In the Standard Model this leads to the hierarchy problem of the electroweak theory, the question why the Higgs mass is so much smaller than the Planck mass. We present an example where a large scalar mass term is avoided by coupling the scalar to an infinite tower of massive states which are obtained from a six-dimensional theory compactified on a torus with magnetic flux. The series of divergent quantum corrections add…
We study the perturbative stability of four settings that arise in String Theory, when dilaton potentials accompany the breaking of Supersymmetry, in the USp(32) and U(32) orientifold models, and also in the heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) model. The first two settings are a family of AdS3xS7 orientifold vacua and a family of AdS7xS3 heterotic vacua, supported by form fluxes, with small world-sheet and string-loop corrections within wide ranges of parameters. In both cases we find some unstable scalar perturbations, as a result of mixings induced by fluxes, confirming for the first class of vacua a pr…
Intersecting D-brane models and their T-dual magnetic compactifications yield attractive models of particle physics where magnetic flux plays a twofold role, being the source of fermion chirality as well as supersymmetry breaking. A potential problem of these models is the appearance of tachyons which can only be avoided in certain regions of moduli space and in the presence of Wilson lines. We study the effective four-dimensional field theory for an orientifold compactification of type IIA string theory and the corresponding toroidal compactification of type I string theory. After determining…
