We investigate how the polarization correlations of entangled photons described by wave packets are modified when measured by moving detectors. For this purpose, we analyze the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality as a function of the apparatus velocity. Our analysis is motivated by future experiments with entangled photons designed to use satellites. This is a first step towards the implementation of quantum information protocols in a global scale.
It is predicted by Schrodinger's equation that entanglement will occur in the interaction between detector and particle. We provide an analysis of the entanglement using the Gurvitz model of double-dot and detector. New results on entangled doubled-dots are provided as well as implications on Quantum Information processing.
It has been shown that the vacuum state of a free quantum field is entangled and such vacuum entanglement can be harvested by a pair of initially uncorrelated detectors interacting locally with the vacuum field for a finite time. In this paper, we examine the entanglement harvesting phenomenon of two non-identical inertial detectors with different energy gaps locally interacting with massless scalar fields via a Gaussian switching function. We focus on how entanglement harvesting depends on the energy gap difference from two perspectives: the amount of entanglement harvested and the harvesting…
We prove the unconditional security of an entanglement-based quantum-key-distribution protocol using detectors that respond to multiple modes of light and cannot distinguish between one from two or more photons. Even with such practical detectors, any defect in the source is automatically detected as an increase in the error rate or in the rate of double clicks.
We propose a scheme for witnessing entanglement in phase space by significantly inefficient detectors. The implementation of this scheme does not require any additional process for correcting errors in contrast to previous proposals. Moreover, it allows us to detect entanglement without full a priori knowledge of the detection efficiency. It is shown that entanglement in single photon entangled and two-mode squeezed states can be witnessed with detection efficiency as low as 40%. Our approach enhances the possibility of witnessing entanglement in various physical systems using current detectio…
In continuous-variable quantum information processing detectors are necessarily coarse grained and of finite range. We discuss how especially the latter feature is a bug and may easily lead to overoptimistic estimates of entanglement and of security, when missed data outside the detector range are ignored. We show that entropic separability or security criteria are much superior to variance-based criteria for mitigating the negative effects of this bug.
We consider the entanglement dynamics between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors at rest separated at a distance $d$. This simple model when analyzed properly in quantum field theory shows many interesting facets and helps to dispel some misunderstandings of entanglement dynamics. We find that there is spatial dependence of quantum entanglement in the stable regime due to the phase difference of vacuum fluctuations the two detectors experience, together with the interference of the mutual influences from the backreaction of one detector on the other. When two initially entangled detectors are still ou…
Secure quantum key distribution with multimode Gaussian entangled states and multimode homodyne detectors is proposed. In general the multimode character of both the sources of entanglement and the homodyne detectors can cause a security break even for a perfect channel when trusted parties are unaware of the detection structure. Taking into account the multimode structure and potential leakage of information from a homodyne detector reduces the loss of security to some extent. We suggest the symmetrization of the multimode sources of entanglement as an efficient method allowing us to fully re…
In this letter, we report an experimental realization of distributing entangled photon pairs over 100 km of dispersion-shifted fiber. In the experiment, we used a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide to generate the time-energy entanglement and superconducting single-photon detectors to detect the photon pairs after 100 km. We also demonstrate that the distributed photon pairs can still be useful for quantum key distribution and other quantum communication tasks.
We study the use of detection devices in entanglement-based state preparation. In particular we consider optical detection devices such as single-photon sensitivity detectors, single-photon resolution detectors and detector cascades (with an emphasis on the performance of realistic detectors). We develop an extensive theory for the use of these devices. In entanglement-based state preparation we perform measurements on subsystems, and we therefore need precise bounds on the distinguishability of these measurements (this is fundamentally different from, e.g., tomography, where an ensemble of id…
We use a single trapped 40Ca+ ion as a resonant, polarization-sensitive absorber to detect and characterize the entanglement of tunable narrowband photon pairs from a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source. Single-photon absorption is marked by a quantum jump in the ion and heralded by coincident detection of the partner photon. For three polarization basis settings of absorption and detection of the herald, we find maximum coincidences always for orthogonal polarizations. The polarization entanglement is further evidenced by tomographic reconstruction of the biphoton quantum state.
The certificate of success for a number of important quantum information processing protocols, such as entanglement distillation, is based on the difference in the entanglement content of the quantum states before and after the protocol. In such cases, effective bounds need to be placed on the entanglement of non-local states consistent with statistics obtained from local measurements. In this work, we study numerically the ability of a novel type of homodyne detector which combines phase sensitivity and photon-number resolution to set accurate bounds on the entanglement content of two-mode qu…
The entanglement of two dipole-coupled atoms with nondegenerate two-photon transitions interacting with two-mode field in lossless cavity has been investigated. It shows that the entanglement is dependent on the initial atomic states. The possibility of considerable growth of atomic entanglement due atomic coherence and dipole-dipole interaction is shown in the case of great mean values of thermal photons.
We consider a possible detector-efficiency loophole in experiments that detect entanglement via the local measurement of witness operators. Here, only local properties of the detectors are known. We derive a general threshold for the detector efficiencies which guarantees that a negative expectation value of a witness is due to entanglement, rather than to erroneous detectors. This threshold depends on the local decomposition of the witness and its measured expectation value. For two-qubit witnesses we find the local operator decomposition that is optimal with respect to closing the loophole.
The human eye can detect optical signals containing only a few photons. We investigate the possibility to demonstrate entanglement with such biological detectors. While one person could not detect entanglement by simply observing photons, we discuss the possibility for several observers to demonstrate entanglement in a Bell-type experiment, in which standard detectors are replaced by human eyes. Using a toy model for biological detectors that captures their main characteristic, namely a detection threshold, we show that Bell inequalities can be violated, thus demonstrating entanglement. Remark…
We study entanglement harvesting for matter systems such as atoms, ions or molecules, whose center of mass degrees of freedom are quantum delocalized and which couple to a relativistic quantum field. We employ a generalized Unruh-deWitt detector model for the light-matter interaction, and we investigate how the coherent spreading of the quantum center of mass wave function of two delocalized detector systems impacts their ability to become entangled with one another, via their respective interaction with a quantum field. For very massive detectors with initially highly localized centers of mas…
We analyze scenarios in which pairs of Unruh-DeWitt-like detectors interact with scalar field(s) with bi-linear and quadratic coupling. For all cases -- real scalar fields, charged scalar fields, and even for couplings mixing two different scalar fields -- we find that the detectors' dynamics depends on the Wightman function of a real scalar field with the same functional form up to a constant multiple. Consequently, entanglement harvesting exhibits low sensitivity to either the kind of scalar field or their charged nature. Furthermore, we show on general grounds that pairs of Unruh-DeWitt-lik…
We consider acceleration-assisted entanglement harvesting as evidenced in correlations between two accelerating Unruh detectors coupled to a scalar field. We elaborate on earlier studies, which in a stationary phase approximation calculated the entanglement dependence on two parameters $c_1 = κL$, and $c_2 = κΩσ^2$, where $κ$ describes the detector's acceleration, $L$ their separation and $Ω$ the energy splitting in a pair of two state Unruh detectors. Here, we go beyond the stationary phase approximation by performing a numerical calculation of entanglement harvesting, allowing us to present …
We present a scheme for multipartite entanglement purification of quantum systems in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state with quantum nondemolition detectors (QNDs). This scheme does not require the controlled-not gates which cannot be implemented perfectly with linear optical elements at present, but QNDs based on cross-Kerr nonlinearities. It works with two steps, i.e., the bit-flipping error correction and the phase-flipping error correction. These two steps can be iterated perfectly with parity checks and simple single-photon measurements. This scheme does not require the parties to posses…
This report is about contradiction between fidelity needed to determine the entanglement and concomitant noise that always accompanies precise measurement. Account of quantum properties of field leads to additional noise caused by multiple particle creation through nonunitarity of quantum field representation in embedded sections of space (Unruh noise). Causes of quantum noise vanish at leaving off assumption about statistical independence of detectors. Smearing of detector leads to elimination of causes of Unruh noise and to emergence of imaginary entanglement of few mode states caused by ove…
We have investigated the dynamics of entanglement between two spin-1/2 qubits that are subject to independent kick and Gaussian pulse type external magnetic fields analytically as well as numerically. Dyson time ordering effect on the dynamics is found to be important for the sequence of kicks. We show that "almost-steady" high entanglement can be created between two initially unentangled qubits by using carefully designed kick or pulse sequences.
We define a multiparty entanglement measure, called generalized geometric measure, that can detect and quantify genuine multiparty entanglement for any number of parties. The quantum phase transitions in exactly solvable models like the anisotropic XY model can be detected by this measure. We find that the multisite measure can be a useful tool to detect quantum phenomena in more complex systems like quasi 2D and 2D frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets. We propose an order parameter, called bound generalized geometric measure, in the spirit of bound quantum states, that can recognize the gap…
An experimental scheme is suggested that permits a direct measure of entanglement in a two-qubit cavity system. It is realized in the cavity-QED technology utilizing atoms as flying qubits. With this scheme we generate two different measures of entanglement, namely logarithmic negativity and concurrence. The phenomenon of sudden death entanglement (ESD) in a bipartite system subjected to dissipative environment is examined. We show that the sudden death time of the entangled states depends on the initial preparation of the entangled state and the temperature of the reservoir.
We consider entanglement harvesting in de Sitter space using a model of multiple qubit detectors. We obtain the formula of the entanglement negativity for this system. Applying the obtained formula, we find that it is possible to access to the entanglement on the super horizon scale if sufficiently large number of detectors are prepared. This result indicates the effect of the multipartite entanglement is crucial for detection of large scale entanglement in de Sitter space.
We investigate how entangled inertial Unruh-DeWitt detectors are affected by interaction with a quantum field using a nonperturbative method. Inertial detectors in a $(3+1)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime with instantaneous switching ($δ$-switching) experience degradation of their initial entanglement as their coupling strength with a scalar field increases. Somewhat surprisingly, initially separable or weakly entangled detectors can extract mutual information from the vacuum. We also find that entanglement degradation is not reduced if communication via the field is possible; rather this onl…
We investigate the dynamics of entanglement given by the concurrence of a two-qubit system in the non-Markovian setting. A quantum master equation is derived which is solved in the eigen basis of the system Hamiltonian for X-type initial states. A closed formula for time evolution of concurrence is presented for a pure state. It is shown that under the influence of dissipation that non-zero entanglement is created in unentangled two qubit states which decay in the same way as pure entangled states. We also show that under real circumstances, the decay rate of concurrence is strongly modified b…
We present a way for entanglement purification based on two parametric down-conversion (PDC) sources with cross-Kerr nonlinearities. It is comprised of two processes. The first one is a primary entanglement purification protocol for PDC sources with nondestructive quantum nondemolition (QND) detectors by transferring the spatial entanglement of photon pairs to their polarization. In this time, the QND detectors act as the role of controlled-not (CNot) gates. Also they can distinguish the photon number of the spatial modes, which provides a good way for the next process to purify the entangleme…
Entanglement and non-locality are non-classical global characteristics of quantum states important to the foundations of quantum mechanics. Recent investigations have shown that environmental noise, even when it is entirely local in influence, can destroy both of these properties in finite time despite giving rise to full quantum state decoherence only in the infinite time limit. These investigations, which have been carried out in a range of theoretical and experimental situations, are reviewed here.
Measurements in the quantum domain can exceed classical notions. This concerns fundamental questions about the nature of the measurement process itself, as well as applications, such as their function as building blocks of quantum information processing protocols. In this paper we explore the notion of entanglement for detection devices in theory and experiment. A method is devised that allows one to determine nonlocal quantum coherence of positive-operator-valued measures via negative contributions in a joint distribution that fully describes the measurement apparatus under study. This approa…
Recently, it has been shown that the massless quantum vacuum state contains entanglement between timelike separated regions of spacetime, in addition to the entanglement between the spacelike separated regions usually considered. Here, we show that timelike entanglement can be extracted from the Minkowski vacuum and converted into ordinary entanglement between two inertial, two-state detectors at the same spatial location -- one coupled to the field in the past and the other coupled to the field in the future. The procedure used here demonstrates a clear time correlation as a requirement for e…
Numerous inequalities involving moments of integrated intensities and revealing nonclassicality and entanglement in bipartite optical fields are derived using the majorization theory, non-negative polynomials, the matrix approach, as well as the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Different approaches for deriving these inequalities are compared. Using the experimental photocount histogram generated by a weak noisy twin beam monitored by a photon-number-resolving iCCD camera the performance of the derived inequalities is compared. A basic set of ten inequalities suitable for monitoring the entanglement…
We make a detailed comparison between entanglement harvesting for uniformly accelerated detectors in vacuum and static ones in a thermal bath at the Unruh temperature and find that, for a small energy gap relative to the Heisenberg energy of the detectors, static detectors in the thermal bath can harvest more entanglement and possess a comparatively larger harvesting-achievable range than the uniformly accelerated ones; however, as the energy gap grows sufficiently large, the uniformly accelerated detectors are instead likely to harvest more entanglement and possess a relatively larger harvest…
We propose a simple model for the nondegenerate parametric inter- action that takes into account the finite spectral bandwidth of the pump wave. The Heisenberg equations of motion are solved exactly and we show that the bosonic operators obey to a generalized Bogoliubov transforma- tion, where the degree of squeezing depends on the spectral bandwidth. The average number of photons produced in the interaction, the degree of squeezing as well as the degree of entanglement are computed showing that they decrease with increasing spectral bandwidth.
The entanglement, purity and energy of two isolated two-level atoms which are initially prepared in Bell state and each interacts with a thermal cavity field are investigated by considering the atomic motion and the field-mode structure. We achieve the analytical solutions of the atomic qubits by using the algebraic dynamical approach and the influences of the field-mode structure parameter, the strength of the thermal field and the detuning on the entanglement, purity and energy are discussed. We also investigate the state evolution of the atomic qubits based on the entanglement-purity-energy…
We investigate the characteristics of entanglement teleportation of a two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ model under different Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with intrinsic decoherence taken into account. The comparison of the two different Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the effects of the initial state and the inputting state on the entanglement teleportation are presented. The results reveal that the dynamics of entanglement is a symmetry function about for the system, whereas it is not for the system. The ferromagnetic case is superior to the antiferromagnetic case for restrain decoherence whe…
Quantum entanglement as the one of the most general quantum resources, can be quantified by von Neumann entropy. However, as we know, the von Neumann entropy is only statistical quantity or operator, it therefore has fluctuation. The quantum fluctuation of entanglement (QFE) between Unruh-Dewitt detector modeled by a two-level atom is investigated in a relativistic setting. The Unruh radiation and quantum fluctuation effects affect the precise measurement of quantum entanglement. Inspired by this we present how the relativistic motion effects QFE for two entangled Unruh-Dewitt detectors when o…
We analyze a tripartite entanglement harvesting protocol with three Unruh-DeWitt detectors adiabatically interacting with a quantum scalar field. We consider linear, equilateral triangular, and scalene triangular configurations for the detectors. We find that, under the same parameters, more entanglement can be extracted in the linear configuration than the equilateral one, consistent with single instantaneous switching results. No bipartite entanglement is required to harvest tripartite entanglement. Furthermore, we find that tripartite entanglement can be harvested even if one detector is at…
We study the properties of the transition probability and entanglement harvesting phenomenon for circularly accelerated detectors locally interacting with massless scalar fields. The dependence of the transition probability on the parameters associated with the circular motion is first analyzed in detail. By a cross-comparison with the situation of the uniformly accelerated motion, we obtain that the transition probability and the possible thermalization behavior for detectors rotating with an extremely large circular radius are analogous to that for uniformly accelerated detectors, but for a …
We propose a scheme for efficient construction of graph states using realistic linear optics, imperfect photon source and single-photon detectors. For any many-body entanglement represented by tree graph states, we prove that the overall preparation and detection efficiency scales only polynomially with the size of the graph, no matter how small the efficiencies for the photon source and the detectors.
We theoretically investigate how the initial state influence the entanglement dynamics between two and three two-level atoms with dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) coupled to a whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microtoroidal cavity. Two different cases, where the two atoms are coupled symmetrically or asymmetrically to the two WGMs through evanescent fields, are discussed in detail. Considering two types of initial states between the atoms and the symmetric regime, we show that for the initial entangled state, the sudden death and birth, as well as the freezing of the entanglement, can be obtained b…
Strong correlations in two conjugate variables are the signature of quantum entanglement and have played a key role in the development of modern physics. Entangled photons have become a standard tool in quantum information and foundations. An impressive example is position-momentum entanglement of photon pairs, explained heuristically through the correlations implied by a common birth zone and momentum conservation. However, these arguments entirely neglect the importance of the `quantumness', i.e. coherence, of the driving force behind the generation mechanism. We study theoretically and expe…
Entanglement purification protocols play an important role in the distribution of entangled systems, which is necessary for various quantum information processing applications. We consider the effects of photo-detector efficiency and bandwidth, channel loss and mode-mismatch on the operation of an optical entanglement purification protocol. We derive necessary detector and mode-matching requirements to facilitate practical operation of such a scheme, without having to resort to destructive coincidence type demonstrations.
We investigate the effects of relative motion on entanglement harvesting by considering a pair of Unruh-Dewitt detectors moving at arbitrary, but independent and constant velocities, both linearly interacting with the vacuum scalar field. Working within the weak coupling approximation, we find that the Negativity is a (non-elementary) function of the relative velocity of the detectors, as well as their energy gaps and minimal separation. We find parameter regions where Negativity increases with velocity up to a maximum and then decreases, reaching zero at some sublight velocity. At any given r…
We study, in the framework of the entanglement harvesting protocol, the entanglement harvesting of both a pair of inertial and uniformly accelerated detectors locally interacting with vacuum massless scalar fields subjected to a perfectly reflecting plane boundary. We find that the presence of the boundary generally degrades the harvested entanglement when two detectors are very close to the boundary. However, when the distance between detectors and the boundary becomes comparable to the interaction duration parameter, the amount of the harvested entanglement approaches a peak, which even goes…
The fate of entanglement of spins for two heavy constituents of a bound state moving in a strong laser field is analyzed within the semiclassical approach. The bound state motion as a whole is considered classically beyond the dipole approximation and taking into account the magnetic field effect by using the exact solution to the Newton equation. At the same time the evolution of constituent spins under the laser influence is studied quantum mechanically. The spin density matrix is determined as solution to the von Neumann equation with the effective Hamiltonian, describing spin-laser interac…
We propose a realistic protocol to generate entanglement between quantum memories at neighboring nodes in hybrid quantum repeaters. Generated entanglement includes only one type of error, which enables efficient entanglement distillation. In contrast to the known protocols with such a property, our protocol with ideal detectors achieves the theoretical limit of the success probability and the fidelity to a Bell state, promising higher efficiencies in the repeaters. We also show that the advantage of our protocol remains even with realistic threshold detectors.
In early days of navigation over sea and ocean it has been considered that when a ship, governed by waves, arrives as some critical distance of the global character, then this ship must absolute collapse, i.e. must fall in the nothing. Only remarkable Magellan voyage definitely "experimentally" realized proof that there is no absolute collapse of the ship trajectory on the ocean, that different collapses of the ship trajectories have always less or more local character, and, that only spherical-symmetric form of the Earth has absolute character. Within standard quantum mechanical formalism col…
Entangled quantum states play an important role in quantum information science and also in quantum mechanics fundamental investigations. Implementation and characterization of techniques allowing for easy preparation of entangled states are important steps in such fields. Here we generated entangled quantum states encoded in photons transversal paths, obtained by pumping a non-linear crystal with multiple transversal Gaussian beams. Such approach allows us to generate entangled states of two qubits and two qutrits encoded in Gaussian transversal path of twin photons. We make a theoretical anal…
It is well-known that in certain scenarios weakly entangled states can generate stronger nonlocal effects than their maximally entangled counterparts. In this paper, we consider violations of the CHSH Inequality when one party has inefficient detectors, a scenario known as an asymmetric Bell experiment. %We show that violations can occur if and only if the detection efficiency is above $50\%$. For any fixed detection efficiency, we derive a simple upper bound on the entanglement needed to violate the inequality by more than some specified amount $κ\geq 0$. When $κ=0$, the amount of entanglemen…
We investigate the entanglement dynamics of continuous-variable quantum channels in terms of an entangled squeezed state of two cavity fields in a general non-Markovian environment. Using the Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory in the coherent-state representation, we derive an exact master equation with time-dependent coefficients reflecting the non-Markovian influence of the environment. The influence of environments with different spectral densities, e.g., Ohmic, sub-Ohmic, and super-Ohmic, is numerically studied. The non-Markovian process shows its remarkable influences on the entan…
We propose a double blinding-attack on entangled-based quantum key distribution protocols. The principle of the attack is the same as in existing blinding attack except that instead of blinding the detectors on one side only, Eve is blinding the detectors of both Alice and Bob. In the BBM92 protocol, the attack allows Eve to get a full knowledge of the key and remain undetected even if Alice and Bob are using 100% efficient detectors. The attack can be easily extended to Ekert protocol, with an efficiency as high as 85.3%.
The entanglement dynamics of an anisotropic two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ system in the presence of intrinsic decoherence is studied. The usefulness of such system for performance of the quantum teleportation protocol ${\cal T}_0$ and entanglement teleportation protocol ${\cal T}_1$ is also investigated. The results depend on the initial conditions and the parameters of the system. For the product and maximally entangled initial states, increasing the size of spin-orbit interaction parameter $D$ amplifies the effects of dephasing and hence decreases the asymptotic entanglement and fidelity of telep…
We investigate entanglement of a quantum field in de Sitter spacetime using a particle detector model. By considering the entanglement between two comoving detectors interacting with a scalar field, it is possible to detect the entanglement of the scalar field by swapping it to detectors. For the massless minimal scalar field, we find that the entanglement between the detectors cannot be detected when their physical separation exceeds the Hubble horizon scale. This behavior supports the appearance of the classical nature of quantum fluctuations generated during the inflationary era.
We study the full entanglement dynamics of two uniformly accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detectors with no direct interaction in between but each coupled to a common quantum field and moving back-to-back in the field vacuum. For two detectors initially prepared in a separable state our exact results show that quantum entanglement between the detectors can be created by the quantum field under some specific circumstances, though each detector never enters the other's light cone in this setup. In the weak coupling limit, this entanglement creation can occur only if the initial moment is placed early en…
We investigate how relativity influences the spin correlation of entangled fermions measured by moving detectors. In particular, we show that the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt Bell inequality is not violated by quantum mechanics when the left and right spin detectors move fast enough.
We study entanglement harvested from a quantum field through local interaction with Unruh-DeWitt detectors undergoing linear acceleration. The interactions allow entanglement to be swapped locally from the field to the detectors. We find an enhancement in the entanglement harvesting by two detectors with anti-parallel acceleration over those with inertial motion. This enhancement is characterized by the presence of entanglement between two detectors that would otherwise maintain a separable state in the absence of relativistic motion (with the same distance of closest approach in both cases). …
