We prove that $\mathcal{C}^2$ surface diffeomorphisms have symbolic extensions, i.e. topological extensions which are subshifts over a finite alphabet. Following the strategy of T.Downarowicz and A.Maass \cite{Dow} we bound the local entropy of ergodic measures in terms of Lyapunov exponents. This is done by reparametrizing Bowen balls by contracting maps in a approach combining hyperbolic theory and Yomdin's theory.
We show that every partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism with a 1-dimensional center bundle has a principal symbolic extension. On the other hand, we show there are no symbolic extensions $C^1$-generically among diffeomorphisms containing non-hyperbolic robustly transitive sets with center indecomposable bundle of dimension at least 2.
We prove that a C1-generic volume preserving diffeomorphism has a symbolic extension if and only if this diffeomorphism is partial hyperbolic. This result is obtained by means of good dichotomies. In particular, we prove Bonatti's conjecture in the volume preserving scenario. More precisely, in the complement of Anosov diffeomorphisms we have densely robust heterodimensional cycles.
We prove that every $\mathcal{C}^{r}$ diffeomorphism with $r>1$ on a three-dimensional manifold admits symbolic extensions, i.e. topological extensions which are subshifts over a finite alphabet. This answers positively a conjecture of Downarowicz and Newhouse in dimension three.
We construct countable Markov partitions for non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds of any dimension, extending earlier work of O. Sarig for surfaces. These partitions allow us to obtain symbolic coding on invariant sets of full measure for all hyperbolic measures whose Lyapunov exponents are bounded away from zero by a constant. Applications include counting results for hyperbolic periodic orbits, and structure of hyperbolic measures of maximal entropy.
Let Diff^1(M) be the set of all C^1-diffeomorphisms f : M \rightarrow M, where M is a compact boundaryless d-dimensional manifold, d \geq 2. We prove that there is a residual subset R of Diff^1(M) such that if f \in R and if H(p) is the homoclinic class associated with a hyperbolic periodic point p, then either H(p) admits a dominated splitting of the form E\oplusF1 \oplus...\oplusFk \oplusG, where Fi is not hyperbolic and one-dimensional, or f|H(p) has no symbolic extensions.
This paper is part 1 of a series of papers culminating in the result that measure preserving diffeomorphisms of the disc or 2-torus are unclassifiable. It also addresses another classical problem: which abstract measure preserving systems are realizable as smooth diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold? The main result of this paper gives new symbolic representations of the Anosov-Katok diffeomorphisms.
Suppose f is a C^{1+ε} surface diffeomorphism with positive topological entropy. For every positive δstrictly smaller than the topological entropy of f we construct an invariant Borel set E such that (a) f|E has a countable Markov partition; and (b) E has full measure with respect to any ergodic invariant probability measure with entropy larger than δ. This allows us to prove the following conjecture of A. Katok: if f is C^\infty with topological entropy h>0, and if P_n(f)=#{x:f^n(x)=x}, then limsup P_n(f)/exp(nh)>0.
We prove that every C1 diffeomorphism away from homoclinic tangencies is entropy expansive, with locally uniform expansivity constant. Consequently, such diffeomorphisms satisfy Shub's entropy conjecture: the entropy is bounded from below by the spectral radius in homology. Moreover, they admit principal symbolic extensions, and the topological entropy and metrical entropy vary continuously with the map. In contrast, generic diffeomorphisms with persistent tangencies are not entropy expansive and have no symbolic extensions.
We consider an Axiom A diffeomorphism and the invariant set $Ω$ of orbits which never falls into a fixed hole. We study various aspects of the complexity of the symbolic representation of $Ω$. Our main result are that each topologically transitive component of $Ω$ is coded and that typically $Ω$ is of finite type.
Extending work of Hochman, we study the almost-Borel structure, i.e., the nonatomic invariant probability measures, of symbolic systems and surface diffeomorphisms. We first classify Markov shifts and characterize them as strictly universal with respect to a natural family of classes of Borel systems. We then study their continuous factors showing that a low entropy part is almost-Borel isomorphic to a Markov shift but that the remaining part is much more diverse, even for finite-to-one factors. However, we exhibit a new condition which we call "Bowen type" which gives complete control of thos…
We prove that a $C^1-$generic symplectic diffeomorphism is either Anosov or the topological entropy is bounded from below by the supremum over the smallest positive Lyapunov exponent of the periodic points. We also prove that $C^1-$generic symplectic diffeomorphisms outside the Anosov ones do not admit symbolic extension and finally we give examples of volume preserving diffeomorphisms which are not point of upper semicontinuity of entropy function in $C^1-$topology.
Let $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{K}$ be commuting $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of the cylinder $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}$ that are, respectively, close to $\mathcal{F}_0 (x, y)=(x+ω(y), y)$ and $T_α(x, y)=(x+α, y)$, where $ω(y)$ is non-degenerate and $α$ is Diophantine. Using the KAM iterative scheme for the group action we show that $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{K}$ are simultaneously $C^\infty$-linearizable if $\mathcal{F}$ has the intersection property (including the exact symplectic maps) and $\mathcal{K}$ satisfies a semi-conjugacy condition. We also provide examples showing necessity of the…
We show that on any smooth compact connected manifold of dimension $m\geq 2$ admitting a smooth non-trivial circle action $\mathcal{S} = \left\{S_t\right\}_{t \in \mathbb{R}}$, $S_{t+1}=S_t$, the set of weakly mixing $C^{\infty}$-diffeomorphisms which preserve both a smooth volume $ν$ and a measurable Riemannian metric is dense in $\mathcal{A}_α \left(M\right)= \overline{ \left\{h \circ S_α \circ h^{-1} : h \in \text{Diff}^{\infty}\left(M, ν\right) \right\}}^{C^{\infty}}$ for every Liouvillean number $α$. The proof is based on a quantitative version of the Anosov-Katok-method with explicitly c…
There is a $C^1$-residual (Baire second class) subset $\mathcal{R}$ of symplectic diffeomorphisms on $2d$-dimensional manifold, $d\geq 1$, such that for every non-Anosov $f$ in $\mathcal{R}$ its topological entropy is lower bounded by the supremum of the Lyapunov exponents of their hyperbolic periodic points in the \emph{unbreakable central subbundle} (i.e., central direction with no dominated splitting) of $f$. The previous result deals with the fact that for $f$ in a residual set $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}$ of symplectic diffeomorphisms (containing $\mathcal{R}$) satisfies a trichotomy: or $f$ is …
We consider a space $\mathcal{U}$ of 3-dimensional diffeomorphisms $f$ with hyperbolic fixed points $p$ the stable and unstable manifolds of which have quadratic tangencies and satisfying some open conditions and such that $Df(p)$ has non-real expanding eigenvalues and a real contracting eigenvalue. The aim of this paper is to study moduli of diffeomorphisms in $\mathcal{U}$. We show that, for a generic element $f$ of $\mathcal{U}$, all the eigenvalues of $Df(p)$ are moduli and the restriction of a conjugacy homeomorphism to a local unstable manifold is a uniquely determined linear conformal m…
Let $M$ be a smooth compact connected manifold of dimension $d\geq 2$, possibly with boundary, that admits a smooth effective $\mathbb{T}^2$-action $\mathcal{S}=\left\{S_{α,β}\right\}_{(α,β) \in \mathbb{T}^2}$ preserving a smooth volume $ν$, and let $\mathcal{B}$ be the $C^{\infty}$ closure of $\left\{h \circ S_{α,β} \circ h^{-1} \;:\;h \in \text{Diff}^{\infty}\left(M,ν\right), (α,β) \in \mathbb{T}^2\right\}$. We construct a $C^{\infty}$ diffeomorphism $T \in \mathcal{B}$ with topological entropy $0$ such that $T \times T$ is loosely Bernoulli. Moreover, we show that the set of such $T \in \ma…
We prove that a "positive probability" subset of the boundary of the set of hyperbolic (Axiom A) surface diffeomorphisms with no cycles $\mathcal{H}$ is constituted by Kupka-Smale diffeomorphisms: all periodic points are hyperbolic and their invariant manifolds intersect transversally. Lack of hyperbolicity arises from the presence of a tangency between a stable manifold and an unstable manifold, one of which is not associated to a periodic point. All these diffeomorphisms that we construct lie on the boundary of the same connected component of $\mathcal{H}$.
We consider a $\mathcal{C}^3$ family $t\mapsto f_t$ of $\mathcal{C}^4$ Anosov diffeomorphisms on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$. Denoting by $ρ_t$ the SRB measure of $f_t$, we prove that the map $t\mapsto\int θdρ_t$ is differentiable if $θ$ is of the form $θ(x)=h(x)δ(g(x)-a)$, with $δ$ the Dirac distribution, $g:M\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ a $\mathcal{C}^4$ function, $h:M\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ a $\mathcal{C}^3$ function and $a$ a regular value of $g$. We also require a transversality condition, namely that the intersection of the support of $h$ with the level set $\{g(x)=a\} $ is foliated by '…
A major motivation for the development of semigroup theory was, and still is, its applications to the study of formal languages. Therefore, it is not surprising that the correspondence $\mathcal X\mapsto B(\mathcal X)$, associating to each symbolic dynamical system $\mathcal X$ the formal language $B(\mathcal X)$ of its blocks, entails a connection between symbolic dynamics and semigroup theory. In this article we survey some developments on this connection, since when it was noticed in an article by Almeida, published in the CIM bulletin, in 2003.
Let $\Diff^{ r}_m(M)$ be the set of $C^{ r}$ volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ ($\dim M\geq 2$). In this paper, we prove that the diffeomorphisms without zero Lyapunov exponents on a set of positive volume are $C^1$ dense in $\Diff^{ r}_m(M), r\geq 1$. We also prove a weaker result for symplectic diffeomorphisms $\mathcal{S}ym^{r}_ω(M), r\geq1 $ saying that the symplectic diffeomorphisms with non-zero Lyapunov exponents on a set of positive volume are $C^1$ dense in $\mathcal{S}ym^{r}_ω(M), r\geq1 $.
This paper studies several aspects of symbolic factors of $\mathcal{S}$-adic subshifts of finite alphabet rank. First, we address a problem raised in [DDPM20] about the topological rank of symbolic factors of $\mathcal{S}$-adic subshifts and prove that this rank is at most the one of the extension system, improving results from [E20] and [GH2020]. As a consequence of our methods, we prove that finite topological rank systems are coalescent. Second, we investigate the structure of fibers $π^{-1}(y)$ of factor maps $π\colon(X,T)\to(Y,T)$ between minimal $\mathcal{S}$-adic subshifts of finite alp…
Let $M$ be a compact manifold and $\text{Diff}^1_m(M)$ be the set of $C^1$ volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of $M$. We prove that there is a residual subset $\mathcal {R}\subset \text{Diff}^1_m(M)$ such that each $f\in \mathcal{R}$ is a continuity point of the map $g\to h_m(g)$ from $\text{Diff}^1_m(M)$ to $\mathbb{R}$, where $h_m(g)$ is the metric entropy of $g$ with respect to volume measure $m$.
This paper studies several aspects of symbolic ({\em i.e.}\ subshift) factors of $\mathcal{S}$-adic subshifts of finite alphabet rank. Let $f$ be a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on a closed (i.e., compact and boundaryless) Riemannian manifold $M$ with a uniformly compact center foliation $\mathcal{W}^{c}$. The relationship among topological entropy $h(f)$, entropy of the restriction of $f$ on the center foliation $h(f, \mathcal{W}^{c})$ and the growth rate of periodic center leaves $p^{c}(f)$ is investigated. It is first shown that if a compact locally maximal invariant center set $Λ$ is center topologically mixing then $f|_Λ$ has the center specification property, i.e., any specification with a large spacing can be cen…
Let $M$ be a 2$d-$dimensional compact connected Riemannian manifold and $ω$ be a symplectic form on $M$. In this paper, we prove that a symplectic diffeomorphism, with all Lyapunov exponent zero for almost everywhere, can be $C^1$ approximated by one with a positive Lyapunov exponent for a positive-measured subset of $M$. That is, the set \[ \left\{ f\in \mathcal{S}ym^1_ω(M)\,| \begin{array}{ll} &\mbox{The largest Lyapunov exponent }λ_1(f,\,x)>0\\ &\mbox{ for a positive measure set } \end{array} \right\} \] is dense in $\mathcal{S}ym^1_ω(M)$. \end{abstract} \end{center}
We show that symbolic finite-to-one extensions of the type constructed by O. Sarig for surface diffeomorphisms induce Hölder-continuous conjugacies on large sets. We deduce this from their Bowen property. This notion, introduced in a joint work with M. Boyle, generalizes a fact first observed by R.\ Bowen for Markov partitions. We rely on the notion of degree from finite equivalence theory and magic word isomorphisms. As an application, we give lower bounds on the number of periodic points first for surface diffeomorphisms (improving a result of Sarig) and for Sinai billiards maps (building on…
We prove that if $G\subset\text{Diff}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ is an Abelian subgroup generated by a family of commuting diffeomorphisms of the plane, all of which are $C^{1}$-close to the identity in the strong $C^{1}$-topology, and if there exist a point $p\in\mathbb{R}^2$ whose orbit is bounded under the action of $G$, then the elements of $G$ have a common fixed point in the convex hull of $\bar{\mathcal{O}_{p}(G)}$. Here, $\bar{\mathcal{O}_{p}(G)}$ denotes the topological closure of the orbit of $p$ by $G$.
The commonly used spatial entropy $h_{r}(\mathcal{U})$ of the multi-dimensional shift space $\mathcal{U}$ is the limit of growth rate of admissible local patterns on finite rectangular sublattices which expands to whole space $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, $d\geq 2$. This work studies spatial entropy $h_Ω(\mathcal{U})$ of shift space $\mathcal{U}$ on general expanding system $Ω=\{Ω(n)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ where $Ω(n)$ is increasing finite sublattices and expands to $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$. $Ω$ is called genuinely $d$-dimensional if $Ω(n)$ contains no lower-dimensional part whose size is comparable to that of its $d$…
Let $M$ be a closed 3-manifold which admits an Anosov flow. In this paper we develop a technique for constructing partially hyperbolic representatives in many mapping classes of $M$. We apply this technique both in the setting of geodesic flows on closed hyperbolic surfaces and for Anosov flows which admit transverse tori. We emphasize the similarity of both constructions through the concept of $h$-transversality, a tool which allows us to compose different mapping classes while retaining partial hyperbolicity. In the case of the geodesic flow of a closed hyperbolic surface $S$ we build stably…
We present an example of a $\mathcal{C}^1$-robustly transitive skew-product with non-trivial, non-hyperbolic action on homology. The example is conservative, ergodic, non-uniformly hyperbolic and its fiber directions cannot be decomposed into two dominated expanded/contracted bundles.
Hayashi has extended a result of Mañé, proving that every diffeomorphism $f$ which has a $C^1$-neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$, where all periodic points of any $g\in\mathcal{U}$ are hyperbolic, it is an Axiom A diffeomorphism. Here, we prove the analogous result in the volume preserving scenario.
In this paper we prove that for an ergodic hyperbolic measure $ω$ of a $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphism $f$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$, there is an $ω$-full measured set $\widetildeΛ$ such that for every invariant probability $μ\in \mathcal{M}_{inv}(\widetildeΛ,f)$, the metric entropy of $μ$ is equal to the topological entropy of saturated set $G_μ$ consisting of generic points of $μ$: $$h_μ(f)=h_{\top}(f,G_μ).$$ Moreover, for every nonempty, compact and connected subset $K$ of $\mathcal{M}_{inv}(\widetildeΛ,f)$ with the same hyperbolic rate, we compute the topological entropy of saturated set $G_K$…
In this paper, we prove that for $\mathcal{C}^1$ generic volume-preserving Anosov diffeomorphisms of a compact Riemannian manifold, Livšic measurable rigidity theorem holds. We also prove that for $\mathcal{C}^1$ generic volume-preserving Anosov flows of a compact Riemannian manifold, Livšic measurable rigidity theorem holds.
Let $M$ be a closed smooth Riemannian manifold $M$, and let $f:M\to M$ be a diffeomorphism. Herein, we demonstrate that (i) if $f$ has the $C^1$ robustly inverse shadowing property on the chain recurrent set $\mathcal{CR}(f)$, then $\mathcal{CR}(f)$ is hyperbolic and (ii) if $f$ has the $C^1$ robustly inverse shadowing property on a nontrivial transitive set $Λ\subset M$, then $Λ$ is hyperbolic for $f$. Especially, the item (ii) is a proof of the conjecture of Lee and Lee \cite{LL}.
We prove that $\mathcal{C}^r$ maps with $r>1$ on a compact surface have symbolic extensions, i.e. topological extensions which are subshifts over a finite alphabet. More precisely we give a sharp upper bound on the so-called symbolic extension entropy, which is the infimum of the topological entropies of all the symbolic extensions. This answers positively a conjecture of S.Newhouse and T.Downarowicz in dimension two and improves a previous result of the author \cite{burinv}.
Given a saddle fixed point of a surface diffeomorphism, its stable and unstable curves $W^S$ and $W^U$ often form a homoclinic tangle. Given such a tangle, we use topological methods to find periodic points of the diffeomorphism, using only a subset of the tangle with finitely many points of intersection, which we call a trellis. We typically obtain exponential growth of periodic orbits, symbolic dynamics and a strictly positive lower bound for topological entropy. For a simple example occurring in the Henon family, we show that the topological entropy is at least 0.527.
For a $\mathcal{C}^1$ diffeomorphism $f:\mathbb{R}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^2$ isotopic to the identity, we prove that for any value $l\in\mathbb{R}$ of the linking number at finite time of the orbits of two points there exists at least a point whose torsion at the same finite time equals $l\in\mathbb{R}$. As an outcome, we give a much simpler proof of a theorem by Matsumoto and Nakayama concerning torsion of measure on $\mathbb{T}^2$. In addition, in the framework of twist maps, we generalize a known result concerning the linking number of periodic points: indeed, we estimate such value for any…
Symbolic Extension Entropy Theorem (SEET) describes the possibility of a lossless digitalization of a dynamical system by extending it to a subshift. It gives an estimate on the entropy of symbolic extensions (and the necessary number of symbols). Unlike in the measure-theoretic case, where Kolmogorov--Sinai entropy is the estimate, in the topological setup the task reaches beyond the classical theory of entropy. Tools from an extended theory of entropy structures are needed. The main goal of this paper is to prove the SEET for actions of countable amenable groups: Let a countable amenable gro…
We show that if $Λ$ is a codimension-one hyperbolic attractor for a $C^r$ diffeomorphism $f$, where $2\leq r\leq \infty$, and $f$ is not Anosov, then there is a neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$ of $f$ in $\mathrm{Diff}^r(M)$ and an open and dense set $\mathcal{V}$ of $\mathcal{U}$ such that any $g\in\mathcal{V}$ has a trivial centralizer on the basin of attraction for $Λ$.
We construct a diffeomorphism $f$ on 2-torus with a dominated splitting $E \oplus F$ such that there exists an open neighborhood $\mathcal{U} \ni f$ satisfying that for any $g \in \mathcal{U}$, neither $E_g$ nor $F_g$ is integrable.
Consider a planar polynomial vector field $X$, and assume it admits a symbolic first integral $\mathcal{F}$, i.e. of the $4$ classes, in growing complexity: Rational, Darbouxian, Liouvillian and Riccati. If $\mathcal{F}$ is not rational, it is sometimes possible to reduce it to a simpler class first integral. We will present algorithms to reduce symbolic first integral to a lower complexity class. These algorithms allow to find the minimal class first integral and in particular to test the existence of a rational first integral except in the case where $\mathcal{F}$ is a $k$-Darbouxian first i…
The group of $\mathcal C^1$-diffeomorphisms of any sparse Cantor subset of a manifold is countable and discrete (possibly trivial). Thompson's groups come out of this construction when we consider central ternary Cantor subsets of an interval. Brin's higher dimensional generalizations $nV$ of Thompson's group $V$ arise when we consider products of central ternary Cantor sets. We derive that the $\mathcal C^2$-smooth mapping class group of a sparse Cantor sphere pair is a discrete countable group and produce this way versions of the braided Thompson groups.
Let $M$ be a manifold with a volume form $ω$ and $f : M \to M$ be a diffeomorphism of class $\mathcal{C}^1$ that preserves $ω$. In this paper, we do \textit{not} assume $f$ is $\mathcal{C}^1$-generic. We have two main themes in the paper: (1) the chain recurrence; (2) relations among recurrence points, homoclinic points, shadowability and hyperbolicity. For (1) (without assuming $M$ is compact), we have the theorem: if $f$ is Lagrange stable, then $M$ is a chain recurrent set. If $M$ is compact, then the Lagrange-stability is automatic. For (2) (assuming the compactness of $M$), we prove some …
We prove that generically in $\text{Diff}^{1}_{m}(M)$, if an expanding $f$-invariant foliation $W$ of dimension $u$ is minimal and there is a periodic point of unstable index $u$, the foliation is stably minimal. By this we mean there is a $C^{1}$-neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$ of $f$ such that for all $C^{2}$-diffeomorphisms $g\in \mathcal{U}$, the $g$-invariant analytic continuation of $W$ is minimal. In particular, all such $g$ are topologically mixing. Moreover, all such $g$ have a hyperbolic ergodic component of the volume measure $m$ which is essentially dense. This component is, in fact, Be…
We study groups of circle diffeomorphisms whose action on the cylinder $\mathcal C=\mathbb S^1\times \mathbb S^1\setminus Δ$ preserves a volume form. We first show that such a group is topologically conjugate to a subgroup of $\rm{PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$, then discuss the existence of a differentiable conjugacy.
