Quantum molecular dynamic simulations are introduced to study the shock compressed oxygen. The principal Hugoniot points derived from the equation of state agree well with the available experimental data. With the increase of pressure, molecular dissociation is observed. Electron spin polarization determines the electronic structure of the system under low pressure, while it is suppressed around 30 $\sim$ 50 GPa. Particularly, nonmetal-metal transition is taken into account, which also occurs at about 30 $\sim$ 50 GPa. In addition, the optical properties of shock compressed oxygen are also discussed.
In this work we study the electronic structure and magnetism of a TiO2 film grown on another non-magnetic oxide such as a LaAlO3 (001) substrate, concentrating on the role played by structural relaxation and oxygen vacancies. Using Density Functional Theory ab-initio methods, we study the free-standing anatase film as well as the interfaces with either the LaO or AlO2 planes of LaAlO3, focusing on the possibility of magnetic solutions. Our results show that the interface LaO/TiO2 is favored against the AlO2/TiO2 one if no oxygen vacancies are present in the interface whereas the contrary happe…
Motivated by recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) observations of a highly metallic two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the (001) vacuum-cleaved surface of SrTiO3 and the subsequent discussion on the possible role of oxygen vacancies for the appearance of such a state (Ref 1), we analyze by means of density functional theory (DFT) the electronic structure of various oxygen-deficient SrTiO3 surface slabs. We find a significant surface reconstruction after introducing oxygen vacancies and we show that the charges resulting from surface-localized oxygen vacancies --independ…
Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations using hybrid density functionals and plane waves are of great interest owing to the accuracy of this approach in treating condensed matter systems. On the other hand, such AIMD calculations are not routinely carried out since the computational cost involved in applying the Hartree Fock exchange operator is very high. In this work, we make use of a strategy that combines adaptively compressed exchange operator formulation and multiple time step integration to significantly reduce the computational cost of these simulations. We demonstrate the effi…
The results of DFT GGA calculations on oxygen molecules adsorbed upon the (001) surface of uranium mononitride (UN) are presented and discussed. We demonstrate that O2 molecules oriented parallel to the substrate can dissociate either (i) spontaneously when the molecular center lies above the surface hollow site or atop N ion, (ii) with the activation barrier when a molecule sits atop the surface U ion. This explains fast UN oxidation in air.
We present a new technique which allows the fully {\em ab initio} calculation of the chemical potential of a substitutional impurity in a high-temperature crystal, including harmonic and anharmonic lattice vibrations. The technique uses the combination of thermodynamic integration and reference models developed recently for the {\em ab initio} calculation of the free energy of liquids and anharmonic solids. We apply the technique to the case of the substitutional oxygen impurity in h.c.p. iron under Earth's core conditions, which earlier static {\em ab initio} calculations indicated to be ther…
La1-xSrxCo0.25Fe0.75O3-delta is known as one of the best cathode materials for permeation membranes and solid oxide fuel cells. Optimization of its chemical composition is a challenging problem. One of the key properties is concentration of oxygen vacancies, controlled by their formation energies. Ab initio calculations were employed in order to study the formation of oxygen vacancies in La1-xSrxCo0.25Fe0.75O3-delta perovskites by varying the Sr content from x = 12.5% to 50%. The formation energies were obtained for different stoichiometries as functions of temperature and oxygen partial press…
The results of DFT supercell calculations of oxygen behavior upon the UN (001) and (110) surfaces as well as at the tilt grain boundary are presented. Oxygen adsorption, migration, incorporation into the surface N vacancies on (001) and (110) surfaces have been modeled using 2D slabs of different thicknesses and supercell sizes. The temperature dependences of the N vacancy formation energies and oxygen incorporation energies are calculated. We demonstrate that O atoms easily penetrate into UN surfaces and grain boundaries containing N vacancies, due to negative incorporation energies and a sma…
Machine learning is changing how we design and interpret experiments in materials science. In this work, we show how unsupervised learning, combined with ab initio modeling, improves our understanding of structural metastability in multicomponent alloys. We use the example case of Al-O-N alloys where the formation of aluminum vacancies in wurtzite AlN upon the incorporation of substitutional oxygen can be seen as a general mechanism of solids where crystal symmetry is reduced to stabilize defects. The ideal AlN wurtzite crystal structure occupation cannot be matched due to the presence of an a…
Extrinsic levels, formation energies, and relaxation geometries are calculated ab initio for oxygen vacancies in alpha-quartz SiO2. The vacancy is found to be thermodynamically stable in the charge states Q=+3, Q=0, Q=--2, and Q=-3. The charged states are stabilized by large and asymmetric distortions near the vacancy site. Concurrently, Franck-Condon shifts for absorption and recombination related to these states are found to be strongly asymmetric. In undoped quartz, the ground state of the vacancy is the neutral charge state, while for moderate p-type and n-type doping, the +3 and -3 states…
We investigate the electronic, magnetic and orbital properties of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 perovskite by means of an ab initio electronic structure calculation within the Hartree-Fock approximation. Using the experimental crystal structure reported by Radaelli et al. [Phys. Rev B 55, 3015 (1997)], we find a charge-ordering stripe-like ground state. The periodicity of the stripes, and the insulating CE-type magnetic structure are in agreement with neutron x-ray and electron diffraction experiments. However, the detailed structure is more complex than that envisaged by simple models of charge and orbital …
We study the structural stability and dynamical properties of Ar(H2)2 under pressure using first-principles and ab initio molecular dynamics techniques. At low temperatures, Ar(H2)2 is found to stabilize in the cubic C15 Laves structure (MgCu2) and not in the hexagonal C14 Laves structure (MgZn2) as it has been assumed previously. Based on enthalpy energy and phonon calculations, we propose a temperature-induced MgCu2 -> MgZn2 phase transition that may rationalize the existing discrepancies between the sets of Raman and infrared vibron measurements. Our AIMD simulations suggest that the meltin…
Nonstoichiometric ceria(CeO$_{2-δ}$) is a candidate reaction medium to facilitate two step water splitting cycles and generate hydrogen. Improving upon its thermodynamic suitability through doping requires an understanding of its vacancy thermodynamics. Using density functional theory(DFT) calculations and a cluster expansion based Monte Carlo simulations, we have studied the high temperature thermodynamics of intrinsic oxygen vacancies in ceria. The DFT+$U$ approach was used to get the ground state energies of various vacancy configurations in ceria, which were subsequently fit to a cluster e…
Oxygen is widely used to tune the performance of chalcogenide phase-change materials in the usage of phase-Change random access memory (PCRAM) which is considered as the most promising next-generation non-volatile memory. However, the microscopic role of oxygen in the write-erase process, i.e., the reversible phase transition between crystalline and amorphous state of phase-change materials is not clear yet. Using oxygen doped GeTe as an example, this work unravels the role of oxygen at the atomic scale by means of ab initio total energy calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation…
The structure around oxygen atoms of four silicate liquids (silica, rhyolite, a model basalt and enstatite) is evaluated by ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. Thanks to the use of maximally localized Wannier orbitals to represent the electronic ground state of the simulated system, one is able to quantify the redistribution of electronic density around oxygen atoms as a function of the cationic environment and melt composition. It is shown that the structure of the melt in the immediate vicinity of the oxygen atoms modulates the distribution of the Wannier orbitals associated with oxygen…
By first-principles LSDA+U calculations, we revealed that the current physical picture of defective uranium dioxide suggested solely by neutron diffraction analysis is unsatisfactory. An understanding based on quantum theory has been established as a thermodynamical competition among point defects and cuboctahedral cluster, which naturally interprets the puzzled origin of the asymmetric O' and O'' interstitials. It also gives a clear and consistent agreement with most available experimental data. Unfortunately, the observed high occupation of O'' site cannot be accounted for in this picture an…
For the purpose of elucidating the gas sensing mechanism of SnO$_2$ for NO and NO$_2$ gases, we calculate the phase diagram of SnO$_2$(110) surface in contact with an O$_2$ and NO gas environment by means of {\it ab initio} thermodynamic method. Firstly we build a range of surface slab models of oxygen pre-adsorbed SnO$_2$(110) surfaces using (1$\times$1) and (2$\times$1) surface unit cells and calculate their Gibbs free energies considering only oxygen chemical potential. The fully reduced surface containing the bridging and in-plane oxygen vacancies in the oxygen-poor condition, while the fu…
Quantum molecular dynamic (QMD) simulations have been applied to study the thermophysical properties of liquid xenon under dynamic compressions. The equation of state (EOS) obtained from QMD calculations are corrected according to Saha equation, and contributions from atomic ionization, which are of predominance in determining the EOS at high temperature and pressure, are considered. For the pressures below 160 GPa, the necessity in accounting for the atomic ionization has been demonstrated by the Hugoniot curve, which shows excellent agreement with previous experimental measurements, and thre…
The segregation behavior of the bimetallic alloys PtPd and CoCr in the case of bare surfaces and in the presence of an oxygen ad-layer has been studied by means of first-principles modeling based on density-functional theory (DFT). For both systems, change of the d-band filling due to charge transfer between the alloy components, resulting in a shift of the d-band center of surface atoms compared to the pure components, drives the surface segregation and governs the chemical reactivity of the bimetals. In contrast to previous findings but consistent with analogous PtNi alloy systems, enrichmen…
Adsorption of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen on the (111) surface of delta-Plutonium has been studied within the framework of density functional theory using the full-potential linear augmented plane wave plus local basis (FP-LAPW+lo) method. All adatoms prefer to bind at the higher coordinated hollow sites, with the chemisorption energies for C, N, and O being 6.539 eV, 6.714 eV, and 8.2 eV respectively. The work function and the surface Pu magnetic moments respectively increased and decreased in all cases upon chemisorption. The partial charges inside the muffin tins spheres, difference charge…
The incorporation of oxygen atoms has been simulated into either nitrogen or uranium vacancy at the UN(001) surface, sub-surface or central layers. For calculations on the corresponding slab models both the relativistic pseudopotentials and the method of projector augmented-waves (PAW) as implemented in the VASP computer code have been used. The energies of O atom incorporation and solution within the defective UN surface have been calculated and discussed. For different configurations of oxygen ions at vacancies within the UN(001) slab, the calculated density of states and electronic charge r…
Bismuth displays puzzling superconducting properties. In its crystalline equilibrium phase, it does not seem to superconduct at accessible low temperatures. However, in the amorphous phase it displays superconductivity at ~ 6 K. Under pressure bismuth has been found to superconduct at Tcs that go from 3.9 K to 8.5 K depending on the phase obtained. So the question is: what electronic or vibrational changes occur that explains this radical transformation in the conducting behavior of this material? In a recent publication we argue that changes in the density of electronic and vibrational states…
The adsorption of oxygen on the Ag(001) is investigated by means of density functional techniques. Starting from a characterization of the clean silver surfaces oxygen adsorption in several modifications (molecularly, on-surface, sub-surface, Ag$_2$O) for varying coverage was studied. Besides structural parameters and adsorption energies also work-function changes, vibrational frequencies and core level energies were calculated for a better characterization of the adsorption structures and an easier comparison to the rich experimental data.
Zirconolite, CaZrTi2O7, is a proposed ceramic for the use in disposal of highly active nuclear waste. Density functional theory (DFT) has been used, in conjunction with a random search technique, to identify the stable interstitial sites for the intrinsic defects in zirconolite. There is a significant dependence on charge states for the vacancy defect structures, with the formation of an O2 molecule in certain charge states of Ti and Zr vacancies. The low coordination of the oxygen ions provided sites on which DFT localised holes associated with the cation vacancies. The Frenkel defect energie…
The uranium mononitride (UN) is a material considered as a promising candidate for Generation-IV nuclear reactor fuels. Unfortunately, oxygen in air affects UN fuel performance and stability. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of oxygen adsorption and further UN oxidation in the bulk and at surface. Recently, we performed a detailed study on oxygen interaction with UN surface using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We were able to identify an atomistic mechanism of UN surface oxidation consisting of several important steps, starting with the oxygen molecule diss…

In this paper we study the possible relation between the electronic and magnetic structure of the TiO2/LaAlO3 interface and the unexpected magnetism found in undoped TiO2 films grown on LaAlO$_3$. We concentrate on the role played by structural relaxation and interfacial oxygen vacancies. LaAlO3 has a layered structure along the (001) direction with alternating LaO and AlO2 planes, with nominal charges of +1 and -1, respectively. As a consequence of that, an oxygen deficient TiO2 film with anatase structure will grow preferently on the AlO2 surface layer. We have therefore performed ab-initio …
This paper shows that the oxygen vacancies observed experimentally in thin films of LaCoO3 subject to tensile strain are thermodynamically stable according to ab initio calculations. By using DFT calculations, we show that oxygen vacancies on the order of 6 % forming chains perpendicular to the (001) direction are more stable than the stoichiometric solution. These lead to magnetic Co2+ ions surrounding the vacancies that couple ferromagnetically. The remaining Co3+ cations in an octahedral environment are non magnetic. The gap leading to a ferromagnetic insulating phase occurs naturally and w…
We present a density-functional theory based Wulff construction of the equilibrium shape of RuO2 particles in an oxygen environment. The obtained intricate variations of the crystal habit with the oxygen chemical potential allow for a detailed discussion of the dependence on the oxidizing pretreatment observed in recent powder catalyst studies. The analysis specifically indicates an incomplete particle shape equilibration in previously employed low temperature calcination. Equilibrated particles could be active CO oxidation catalysts with long-term stability in oxidizing feed and then represen…
A possible mechanism for the resistive switching observed experimentally in Fe/MgO/V/Fe junctions is presented. Ab initio total energy calculations within the local density approximation and pseudopotential theory shows that by moving the oxygen ions across the MgO/V interface one obtains a metastable state. It is argued that this state can be reached by applying an electric field across the interface. In addition, the ground state and the metastable state show different electric conductances. The latter results are discussed in terms of the changes of the density of states at the Fermi level …
To help understand the high activity of silver as an oxidation catalyst, e.g., for the oxidation of ethylene to epoxide and the dehydrogenation of methanol to formaldehyde, the interaction and stability of oxygen species at the Ag(111) surface has been studied for a wide range of coverages. Through calculation of the free energy, as obtained from density-functional theory and taking into account the temperature and pressure via the oxygen chemical potential, we obtain the phase diagram of O/Ag(111). Our results reveal that a thin surface-oxide structure is most stable for the temperature and p…
By means of ab initio calculations based on the density functional theory we investigated magnetic phase diagram of ordered FePd$_3$ alloy as a function of external pressure. Considering several magnetic configurations we concluded that the system under pressure has a tendency to non-collinear spin alignment. Analysis of the Heisenberg exchange parameters $J_{ij}$ revealed strong dependence of iron-iron magnetic couplings on polarization of Pd atoms. To take into account the latter effect we built an extended Heisenberg model with higher order (biquadratic) terms. Minimizing the energy of this…
We performed an {\it ab initio} investigation on the properties of rutile tin oxide (SnO$_{x}$) nanowires. We computed the wire properties determining the equilibrium geometries, binding energies and electronic band structures for several wire dimensions and surface facet configurations. The results allowed to establish scaling laws for the structural properties, in terms of the nanowire perimeters. The results also showed that the surface states control most of the electronic properties of the nanowires. Oxygen incorporation in the nanowire surfaces passivated the surface-related electronic s…
We report investigation of phonons and oxygen diffusion in Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3. The phonon spectra have been measured in Bi2O3 at high temperatures up to 1083 K using inelastic neutron scattering. Ab-initio calculations have been used to compute the individual contributions of the constituent atoms in Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 to the total phonon density of states. Our computed results indicate that as temperature is increased, there is a complete loss of sharp peak structure in the vibrational density of states. Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations show that even at 1000 K in δ-phase …
By using \textit{ab initio} calculations with the HSE06 hybrid functional and GW approximation combined with numerical solution of the Bethe Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) we predict the existence of diverse number of excitonic states in multifunctional hydroxides \ce{\textit{X}(OH)2} (\textit{X}= Mg and Ca) that were not previously reported experimentally or theoretically. Imaginary part of the dielectric function and reflectivity spectra show very strong peaks corresponding to the electron-hole pair states of large binding energy. The origin of the excitons is attributed to strong localization o…
We present and discuss the results of ab initio DFT plane-wave supercell calculations of the atomic and molecular oxygen adsorption and diffusion on the LaMnO3 (001) surface which serves as a model material for a cathode of solid oxide fuel cells. The dissociative adsorption of O2 molecules from the gas phase is energetically favorable on surface Mn ions even on a defect-free surface. The surface migration energy for adsorbed O ions is found to be quite high, 1.6 eV. We predict that the adsorbed O atoms could penetrate into electrode first plane when much more mobile surface oxygen vacancies (…
Ramp compression experiments characterize high-pressure states of matter at temperatures well below those present in shock compression. However, because temperature is typically not directly measured during ramp compression, it is uncertain how much heating occurs under these shock-free conditions. Here, we performed a series of ab initio simulations on carbon in order to match the density-stress measurements of Smith et al. [Smith, et al., Nature 511, 330 (2014)]. We considered isotropically as well as uniaxially compressed solid carbon in the diamond and BC8 phases, with and without defects,…
First principles electronic structure calculations have been carried out on ordered double perovskites Sr_2B'B"O_6 (for B' = Cr or Fe and B" 4d and 5d transition metal elements) with increasing number of valence electrons at the B-sites, and on Ba_2MnReO_6 as well as Ba_2FeMoO_6. The Curie temperatures are estimated ab initio from the electronic structures obtained with the local spin-density functional approximation, full-potential generalized gradient approximation and/or the LDA+U method (U - Hubbard parameter). Frozen spin-spirals are used to model the excited states needed to evaluate the…
Multi-crystalline silicon is widely used for producing low-cost and high-efficiency solar cells. During crystal growth and device fabrication, silicon solar cells contain grain boundaries (GBs) which are preferential segregation sites for atomic impurities such as oxygen atoms. GBs can induce charge carriers recombination significantly reducing carrier lifetimes and therefore they can be detrimental for Si device performance. We studied the correlation between structural, energetic and electronic properties of Σ3{111} Si GB in the presence of vacancies, strain and multiple O segregation. The s…
Atomic scale defects in semiconductors enable their technological applications and realization of novel quantum states. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy complemented by ab-initio calculations we determine the nature of defects in the anisotropic van der Waals layered semiconductor ReS$_2$. We demonstrate the in-plane anisotropy of the lattice by directly visualizing chains of rhenium atoms forming diamond-shaped clusters. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we measure the semiconducting gap in the density of states. We reveal the presence of lattice defects and by compari…
We perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation of liquid water in the canonical ensemble at ambient conditions using the SCAN meta-GGA functional approximation, and carry out systematic comparisons with the results obtained from the GGA-level PBE functional, and Tkatchenko-Scheffler van der Waals (vdW) dispersion correction inclusive PBE functional. We analyze various properties of liquid water including radial distribution functions, oxygen-oxygen-oxygen triplet angular distribution, tetrahedrality, hydrogen bonds, diffusion coefficients, ring statistics, density of states, band ga…
We present the first ab initio density functional theory study of the oxygen-terminated Cr2O3 (0001) surface within the local spin-density approximation (LSDA). We find that spin plays a critical role for even the most basic properties of Cr2O3 such as the structure and mechanical response of the bulk material. The surface exhibits strong relaxations and changes in electronic and magnetic structure with important implications for the chemical reactivity and unusual spin-dependent catalytic activity of the surface. Unlike the bulk, the outermost chromium bilayer is ferromagnetically ordered, an…
Using ab initio methods, we have studied the electron-phonon interaction in compressed, body-centered cubic (bcc) yttrium, which is predicted to be stable at 280 GPa [Melsen et al, Phys. Rev. B 48, 15574 (1993)]. We find that compressed, bcc yttrium has a large electron-phonon coupling with lambda=1.8, leading to a superconducting transition temperature T_c ~ 30 K or above. Our results indicate that the large electron-phonon coupling is due to the lattice hardening.
We study from first principles the luminescence of Lu$_2$SiO$_5$:Ce$^{3+}$ (LSO:Ce), a scintillator widely used in medical imaging applications, and establish the crucial role of oxygen vacancies (V$_O$) in the generated spectrum. The excitation energy, emission energy and Stokes shift of its luminescent centers are simulated through a constrained density-functional theory method coupled with a $Δ$SCF analysis of total energies, and compared with experimental spectra. We show that the high-energy emission band comes from a single Ce-based luminescent center, while the large experimental spread…
Since recent both theoretical and experimental results have proved that the simple behaviour light alkaline metals present at equilibrium breaks when high pressures are applied, they have become an important object of study in Condensed Matter Physics. On the other hand, development of new techniques in the atomic manipulation allows the growth of atomic monolayers (ML's), therefore rising the interest to analyze low dimensional systems under different conditions. In particular, new \textit{ab initio} calculations performed for a lithium ML show that its electronic properties experience import…
A new class of strongly infrared active structures is identified for phase III of compressed molecular H2 by constant-pressure ab initio molecular dynamics and density-functional perturbation calculations. These are planar quadrupolar structures obtained as a distortion of low-pressure quadrupolar phases, after they become unstable at about 150 GPa due to a zone-boundary soft phonon. The nature of the II-III transition and the origin of the IR activity are rationalized by means of simple electrostatics, as the onset of a stabilizing dipole-quadrupole interaction.
Water and hydrogen at high pressure make up a substantial fraction of the interiors of giant planets. Using ab initio random structure search methods we investigate the ground-state crystal structures of water, hydrogen, and hydrogen-oxygen compounds. We find that, at pressures beyond 14 Mbar, excess hydrogen is incorporated into the ice phase to form a novel structure with H4O stoichiometry. We also predict two new ground state structures, P2_1/m and I4/mmm, for post-C2/m water ice.
{\it Ab initio} calculations within density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation have been performed to study the effects of oxygen vacancies on the electronic structure and magnetism in undoped V$_2$O$_{5-x}$ ($0 < x < 0.5$). It is found that the introduction of oxygen vacancies would induce ferromagnetism in V$_2$O$_{5-x}$ with the magnetization being proportional to the O vacancy concentration $x$. The calculated electronic structure reveals that the valence electrons released by the introduction of oxygen vacancies would occupy mainly the neighboring V $d_{xy}$-dominan…
Electronic structure of layered LiNiO2 has been controversial despite numerous theoretical and experimental reports regarding its nature. We investigate the charge densities, lithium intercalation potentials and Li diffusion barrier energies of LixNiO2 (0.0 < x < 1.0) system using a truly ab-initio method, diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC). We compare the charge densities from DMC and density functional theory (DFT) and show that local and semi-local DFT functionals yield spin polarization densities with incorrect sign on the oxygen atoms. SCAN functional and Hubbard-U correction improves th…
Silicon together with its native oxide SiO$_2$ was recognized as an outstanding material system for the semiconductor industry in the 1950s. In state-of-the-art device technology, SiO$_2$ is widely used as an insulator in combination with high-$k$ dielectrics such as HfO$_2$, demanding fabrication of ultra-thin interfacial layers. The classical standard model derived by Deal and Grove accurately describes the oxidation of Si in a progressed stage, however, strongly underestimates growth rates for thin oxide layers. Recent studies report a variety of oxidation mechanisms during the growth of ox…
The crystal structure of solid oxygen at low temperatures and at pressures up to 7 GPa is studied by theoretical calculations. In the calculations, the adiabatic potential of the crystal is approximated by a superposition of pair-potentials between oxygen molecules calculated by an ab-initio method. The monoclinic alpha structure is stable up to 6 GPa and calculated lattice parameters agree well with experiments. The origin of a distortion and that of an anisotropic lattice compressibility of the basal plane of alpha-O2 are clearly demonstrated. In the pressure range from 6 to 7 GPa, two kinds…
We present an ab initio study of electronic correlation effects in a molecular cluster derived from the hexanuclear ferric wheel [LiFe6(OCH3)12-(dbm)6]PF6. The electronic and magnetic properties of this cluster have been studied with all-electron Hartree-Fock, full-potential density functional calculations and multi-reference second-order perturbation theory. For different levels of correlation, a detailed study of the impact of the electronic correlation on the exchange parameter was feasible. As the main result, we found that the influence of the bridge oxygen atoms on the exchange parameter…
