The MgB2 superconductor has already demonstrated its applicative potential, in particular for DC applications such as MRI magnets, thanks to the low costs of the raw materials and to its simple production process. However further efforts have still to be made in order to broaden its employment also towards the AC applications such as SFCL, motors, transformers. The main issues are related to the reduction of the AC losses. Some of these can be faced by obtaining multifilamentary conductors with a large number of very fine filaments and, in this context, the powders granulometry can play a crucial role. We have prepared MgB2 starting powders with different granulometries and by the ex-situ P.I.T method we have realized multifilamentary wires with a number of filaments up to 361 and an average size of each filament lowered down to 30 microns. In particular we have studied the relationship between grain and filament size in terms of transport properties and show that the optimization of this ratio is possible in order to obtain suitable conductors for AC industrial applications.
Seven-core Ag/Fe sheathed Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) superconducting wires were produced by the ex situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method. The relationship between the cold-work deformation process and the superconducting properties of wires were systematically studied. It was found that flat rolling can efficiently increase the density of the superconducting core and largely improve the transport critical current density (Jc) of as-drawn wires. The Jc of the best sample achieved 21.1 kA/cm^2 at 4.2 K in self field, and showed very weak magnetic field dependence in high fields. Our result suggested a …
A comparative study of magnetic behavior in a DC magnetic field up to 19 Tesla has been undertaken on different Nb3Sn samples, i.e. single crystals, polycrystal samples and multifilamentary wires. From the 1st and 3rd harmonics of the AC magnetic susceptibility a peak effect was experimentally observed in the single crystal and in the polycrystal, whereas this phenomenon is absent in the measured wires. The corresponding H vs T phase diagram reveals a different behavior between wires on one hand and polycrystalline and single crystal samples on the other. In particular, from the 3rd harmonics …
Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x is the only cuprate superconductor that can be made into a round-wire conductor form with a high enough critical current density Jc for applications. Here we show that the Jc(5 T,4.2 K) of such Ag-sheathed filamentary wires can be doubled to more than 1.4x10^5 A/cm^2 by low temperature oxygenation. Careful analysis shows that the improved performance is associated with a 12 K reduction in transition temperature Tc to 80 K and a significant enhancement in intergranular connectivity. In spite of the macroscopically untextured nature of the wire, overdoping is highly effective in …
We have fabricated prototype Bi,Pb(2223)/Ag superconduting multifilamentary wires with a square cross-section. The AC losses of these wires were measured, compared with those of tapes and also compared with the theory. Wires show largely reduced AC magnetic field losses at 47 Hz, compared to those of tapes in a perpendicular magnetic field. The effects of the twist pitch and of the use of the high resisitive barriers were also investigated. The results show that the use of a twist pitch of about 10 mm is sufficient for decoupling the filaments, and that the use of very short twist pitches does…
Transport critical current densities and n-values were measured at 4.2 K in fields up to 15 T on 7, 19, and 37-stack multifilamentary MgB2 strands made using an in-situ route. Some strands included SiC additions (particle size 30 nm), while in others Mg-rich compositions were used. Two basic multifilamentary variants were measured, the first had Nb filamentary barriers, the second had Fe filamentary barriers. All samples incorporated stabilizer in the form of Cu 101. Simple, one-step heat treatments were used, with temperatures ranging from 700-800C, and times from 10-30 minutes. Transport cri…
Multifilamentary MgB2/Fe wires and tapes with high transport critical current densities have been fabricated using a straightforward powder-in-tube (PIT) process. After annealing, we measured transport jc values up to 1.1 * 105 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and in a field of 2 T in a MgB2/Fe square wire with 7 filaments fabricated by two-axial rolling, and up to 5 * 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K in 1 T in a MgB2/Fe tape with 7 filaments. For higher currents these multifilamentary wires and tapes quenched due to insufficient thermal stability of filaments. Both the processing routes and deformation methods were found to…
Significant insights for critical current density (Jc) improvement in Bi-2212 super- conductor wires can be obtained by an accurate analysis of the structural and mi- crostructural properties evolving during the so-called partial-melt process, a heat treatment needed to improve grain connectivity and therefore gain high Jc. Here, we report an in-situ analysis by means of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction performed, for the first time, during the heat treatment carried out with the very same temperature profile and reacting oxygen atmosphere in which the Bi-2212 wires are usually treate…
In DC and AC practical applications of MgB2 superconducting wires an important role is represented by the material sheath which has to provide, among other things, a suitable electrical and thermal stabilization. A way to obtain a large enough amount of low resistivity material in to the conductor architecture is to use it as external sheath. In this paper we study ex-situ multifilamentary MgB2 wires using oxide-dispersion-strengthened copper (GlidCop) as external sheath in order to reach a good compromise between critical current density and thermal properties. We prepared three GlidCop sampl…
Iron-based superconductors have been considered to be very promising in high-field applications, for which multifilamentary wire and tape conductors with high mechanical strength are essential. In this work, 7-,19- and 114-filament Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) superconducting wires and tapes with silver as matrix and iron as outer reinforcing sheath were produced by the ex situ powder-in-tube method. The mass densities of Sr-122 phase in 7- and 19-filament conductors were investigated by microhardness characterization, which revealed a positive correlation between hardness and transport critical c…
Mono- and multifilamentary MgB2/Fe tapes and wires with high transport critical current densities have been prepared using the powder-in-tube (PIT) process. The fabrication details are described. The effect of powder grain sizes and recrystallization temperature on jc has been investigated. At 25K and 1 T, jc values close to 105 A/cm2 were measured, while jc of 106 A/cm2 were extrapolated for 4.2K/0T in our monofilamentary tape. MgB2/Fe tapes exhibit high exponential n factors for the resistive transition: n ~ 80 and 40 were found at 5 T and 7 T, respectively. The highest transport jc values o…
We report non-Cu critical current densities of 4.09 * 10^9 A/m^2 at 12 T and 2.27 * 10^9 A/m^2 at 15 T obtained from transport measurements on a Ti-alloyed RRP Nb3Sn wire after irradiation to a fast neutron fluence of 8.9 * 10^21 m^-2. These values are to our knowledge unprecedented in multifilamentary Nb3Sn, and they correspond to a Jc enhancement of approximately 60% relative to the unirradiated state. Our magnetometry data obtained on short wire samples irradiated to fast neutron fluences of up to 2.5 * 10^22 m^-2 indicate the possibility of an even better performance, whereas earlier irrad…
We present two magnetometry-based methods suitable for assessing gradients in the critical temperature and hence the composition of multifilamentary superconductors: AC magnetometry and Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy. The novelty of the former technique lies in the iterative evaluation procedure we developed, whereas the strength of the latter is the direct visualization of the temperature dependent penetration of a magnetic field into the superconductor. Using the example of a PIT Nb3Sn wire, we demonstrate the application of these techniques, and compare the respective results to each other …
Three solenoids have been wound and with MgB2 strand and tested for transport properties. One of the coils was wound with Cu-sheathed monofilamentary strand and the other two with a seven filament strand with Nb-reaction barriers, Cu stabilization, and an outer monel sheath. The wires were first S-glass insulated, then wound onto an OFHC Cu former. The coils were then heat treated at 675C/30 min (monofilamentary strand) and 700C/20 min (multifilamentary strand). Smaller (1 m) segments of representative strand were also wound into barrel-form samples and HT along with the coils. After HT the co…
MgB2 hollow wires have been produced with a new technique which uses a conventional wire manufacturing process but is applied to composite billets containing the elemental B and Mg precursors in an appropriate shape. The technique has been applied to the manufacture of both monofilamentary and multifilamentary wires of several tens meters length. The superconducting transport properties of the MgB2 hollow wires have been measured in magnetic field and in the temperature range from 4.2 to 30 K. Promising results are obtained, which indicate the possibility of application of these wires as super…
MgB2 tapes and wires were fabricated by the Powder-In-Tube method. Stainless steel and Cu-Ni tubes were used as sheath materials, and no heat treatment was applied. The tapes made of stainless steel showed transport critical current density Jc of about 10,000A/cm2 at 4.2K and 5T. A high Jc of about 300,000A/cm2 was obtained by extrapolating the Jc-B curves to zero field. Multifilamentary(7-core) MgB2 wire was successfully fabricated using Cu-Ni tubes. For both tapes and wires the grain connectivity of MgB2 was as good as a high-pressure sintered bulk sample. However, the Jc of the Cu-Ni sheath…
In this letter we demonstrate achievement of record non-Cu critical current density (Jc,non-Cu) in ternary, multifilamentary Nb3Sn conductors by the introduction of artificial pinning centers (APC). In the past two years, we have made great progress in the development of APC Nb3Sn wires. Recent resistivity vs magnetic field measurements confirmed the high upper critical field (Bc2) of ternary APC wires, which at 4.2 K was ~28 T, about 1-2 T higher than present state-of-the-art conductors. In addition to high Bc2, it was found that APC wires have noticeably higher Sn content in the Nb3Sn layers…
High engineering critical current density JE of >500 A/mm2 at 20 T and 4.2 K can be regularly achieved in Ag-sheathed multifilamentary Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox (Bi-2212) round wire when the sample length is several centimeters. However, JE(20 T) in Bi-2212 wires of several meters length, as well as longer pieces wound in coils, rarely exceeds 200 A/mm2. Moreover, long-length wires often exhibit signs of Bi-2212 leakage after melt processing that are rarely found in short, open-end samples. We studied the length dependence of JE of state-of-the-art powder-in-tube (PIT) Bi-2212 wires and gases released by …
Conventional powder-in-tube (PIT) method has been the most effective technique for fabricating iron-based superconducting wires and tapes. Tremendous advances have been made during the last few years, especially for 122 family pnictide tapes. Here we review some of the most recent and significant developments in making high-performance iron-based tapes by the ex-situ PIT process, paying particular attention to several fabrication techniques to realize high-field Jc performance in terms of increase of core density and improvement of texture. At 4.2 K, the practical level transport Jc up to 0.12…
The paper presents discussion on up to date results on MgB2 conductors from the point of view of their future dc and ac applications. Basic physical parameters of MgB2 compound relevant to conductors are introduced. Different conductor preparation methods and conductor architectures are presented and attainable critical current densities discussed. Some numerical results on critical currents and ac losses of future multifilamentary MgB2 conductors with magnetic cladding of their filaments are given. Recently observed anomalous decrease of ac susceptibility at 50 K in copper clad Powder-in-tube…
We have fabricated a series of iron-sheathed superconducting wires prepared by the powder-in-tube technique from (MgB_2)_{1-x}:(Mg+2B)_x initial powder mixtures taken with different proportions, so that x varies from 0 to 1. It turned out that "ex-situ" prepared wire (x = 0) has considerable disadvantages compared to all the other wires in which "in-situ" assisted (0 < x < 1) or pure "in-situ" (x = 1) preparation was used due to weaker inter-grain connectivity. As a result, higher critical current densities J_c were measured over the entire range of applied magnetic fields B_a for all the samp…
We fabricated FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires using ex-situ Powder-in-tube method with an Fe sheath. It was amazing that superconducting current was observed in the as-drawn wire without any heat treatments. By heat treatment at 200C for 2 hours, Tczero and Jc at 4.2 K were enhanced up to 9.1 K and 64.1 A/cm2 (Ic = 182.6 mA), respectively. Furthermore, the Jc of FeTe0.5Se0.5 wire heat treated at 200C for 2 hours was not much sensitive to the applied magnetic fields. Therefore, FeTe0.5Se0.5 wires have a great potential for applications.
MgB2 wires and tapes suffer from a limitation of the transport current densities, especially at low field, due to an unsufficient thermal stabilization caused by hot spots from a non-homogeneous microstructure, the presence of secondary phases and voids. For the preparation of MgB2 wires and tapes two different precursor routes, using MgB2 (ex-situ process) or Mg + B (in-situ process) are applied. The in-situ approach allows variation of many parameters in the wire preparation and the improvement of this approach is the central topic of this paper. We present an improved in-situ approach, the …
We demonstrate the fabrication of superconducting SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm-1111) wires by using the ex-situ powder-in-tube technique. Sm-1111 powder and a binder composed of SmF3, samarium arsenide, and iron arsenide were used to synthesize the superconducting core. Although the F content of Sm-1111 is reduced in the process of ex-situ fabrication, the binder compensates by sufficiently supplementing the F content, thereby preventing a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature and a shrinking of the superconducting volume fraction. Thus, in the superconducting Sm-1111 wire with the binder…
We report large transport critical current densities observed in Ag-added (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires prepared by an ex-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) process. The wire has a simple composite structure sheathed only by Ag. A precursor bulk material prepared by a melting process was ground into powder and put into a Ag tube. The composite was then cold worked into a wire and heat treated at 850$^\circ$C for sintering. Transport critical current densities, Jc, at 4.2 K are 1.0\times104 A/cm2 (Ic = 60.7 A) in self field and 1.1\times103 A/cm2 (Ic = 6.6 A) in 10 T. These are the highest values r…

In this letter we demonstrate the development of ternary Nb3Sn multifilamentary conductors with artificial pinning centers (APC) which achieve high critical fields. These recently-developed conductors were tested in a 31 T magnet, and the results showed that their upper critical field (Bc2) values at 4.2 K are 27-28 T, and irreversible field (Birr) values are above 26 T, values similar to or higher than those of best RRP conductors. The non-Cu Jc has been brought to nearly 1200 A/mm2 at 16 T and 4.2 K, comparable to RRP, in spite of the fact that the fine-grain Nb3Sn fractions in filaments are…
The superconducting properties of copper-sheathed MgB2 wires fabricated by conventional powder-in-tube techniques and the in-situ reaction procedure are analysed. The influence of the processing conditions and initial (1+x)Mg + 2B (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2) proportions of the precursors on the critical current values of the wires have been studied. In particular, the limits of the available temperatures and times for heat treatments imposed by the chemical reaction between Mg and Cu, and their effect on the superconducting properties of the wires, are discussed. The analysis includes the study of the s…
We found that the transport Jc of the ex-situ PIT processed (Ba,K)Fe2As2 (Ba-122) wire with single Ag sheath can be significantly enhanced by repeating the combined process of rolling and heat treatment. The transport Jc (4.2 K and 10 T) of 4.4 x 103 A/cm2 (Ic =15.7 A) was obtained for a thin tape of 0.3 mm in thickness, which is the highest value reported so far for the PIT processed 122 wires and tapes with a Ag sheath and processed by a conventional route. The measurement by a hybrid magnet showed that Jc-H curve maintains very small field dependence up to the strong magnetic field of 28 T …
MgB2 monofilamentary nickel-sheated tapes and wires were fabricated by means of the ex-situ powder-in-tube method using either high-energy ball milled and low temperature synthesized powders. All sample were sintered at 920 C in Ar flow. The milling time and the revolution speed were tuned in order to maximize the critical current density in field (Jc): the maximum Jc value of 6 x 10e4 A/cm2 at 5 K and 4 T was obtained corresponding to the tape prepared with powders milled for 144h at 180rpm. Vorious synthesis temperature were also investigated (730-900 C) finding a best Jc value for the wire …
Superconducting Ag or Cu sheathed MgB2 wires have been fabricated by conventional powder-in-tube techniques. The in-situ reaction of Mg and B powders with atomic proportions of 1:2 and 1.33:2 inside Ag or Cu tubes at low temperatures have been searched. An active alloying of Mg with Ag or Cu sheaths at temperatures below 660 C has been observed. For Ag sheaths, there is a strong diffusion of Mg, which does not allow the formation of large amounts of MgB2 at the core. For Cu sheaths, the diffusion of Mg is stopped by the formation of a MgCu2 layer around the superconducting core and an appropri…
In this letter, we report the results of transport Jc of solenoid coils upto 100 turns fabricated with Cu-sheathed MgB2 wires using a wind-reaction in-situ technique. Despite the low density of single core and some reaction between Mg and Cu-sheath, our results demonstrate the decrease in transport Jc with increasing length of MgB2 wires is insignificant. Solenoid coils with diameter as small as 10 mm can be readily fabricated using a wind-reaction in-situ technique. The Jc of coils is essentially the same as in the form of straight wires. A Jc of 133,000 A/cm2 and 125,000 A/cm2 at 4 K and sel…
We have fabricated (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires through ex-situ powder-in-tube method. Silver was used as a chemical addition to improve the performance of these superconducting wires. The transport critical current densities (Jc) have reached 1.3\times104 A/cm and 1.0\times104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K under self field in the wires with and without Ag addition. We used magneto-optical (MO) imaging technique to investigate the properties of grain boundaries in the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wire with Ag addition. MO images show the weak links in the Fe-based superconducting wires for the first ti…
In this work, the feasibility condition of Powder-In-Tube (PIT) processed wires of Fe(Se,Te) superconductor has been investigated. We faced several technical issues that are extensively described and discussed. In particular, we tested different metals and alloys as external sheaths (Cu, Ag, Nb, Ta, Ni, Fe, cupronickel, brass) concluding that the only sheath that does not affect substantially the Fe(Se,Te) phase is Fe. On the other hand, Fe sheath introduces excess iron in the Fe(Se,Te) phase, which affects the superconducting properties; we investigated the effects of the thermal treatments a…
Among the recently discovered Fe-based superconducting compounds, the (K,Ba)Fe2As2 phase is attracting large interest within the scientific community interested in conductor developments. In fact, after some years of development, critical current densities Jc of about 105 A/cm2 at fields up to more than 10 T have been obtained in powder in tube (PIT) processed wires and tapes. Here we explore the crucial points in the wire/tape fabrication by means of the ex-situ PIT method. We focus on scaling up processes which are crucial for the industrial fabrication. We analyzed the effects on the micros…
The new class of Mg-B superconducting conductors was prepared using the standard in-situ powder-in-tube, PIT, method where Mg+2B mixture was used to fill the copper and silver tubes. Study of the intergranular current, grain connectivity and superconducting phases in wires were conducted by AC susceptibility measurements and direct four point transport measurements. Using SQUID magnetometer, magnetisation versus magnetic field (M-H) curves of the round wires after reactive diffusion were measured at temperatures 5K and magnetic field up to 5T to define the Jcmag . The direct current density me…
We have fabricated a series of ex situ copper sheathed powder-in-tube MgB2 wires with 20% by volume Ag, Pb, In, and Ga metal added to the MgB2 powder. We find the transport critical current of these wires increases significantly with the addition of specific metals to the core filament. In particular, the critical current density (Jc) of the MgB2/Ga(20%) wire is in excess of 5x10^4 A/cm^2 at 10K in self field, nearly 50 times that of the MgB2/Ag(20%) wire. The temperature dependent Jc of all wires is well described as an ensemble of clean S/N/S junctions in which the relevant parameters are th…
