We calculate radiative lifetimes of collective electronic excitations of atoms in an infinite one dimensional lattice. The translational symmetry along the lattice restricts the photon wave vector component parallel to the lattice to the exciton wave number and thus the possible emission directions. The resulting radiation damping rate and emission pattern of the exciton strongly deviates from independent atom. For some wave numbers and polarizations the excitons superradiantly decay very fast, while other excitons show zero radiation damping rate and form propagating meta-stable excitations. Such states could be directly coupled via tailored evanescent fields from a nearby fiber.

The uncanny ability of multiple particles to interfere with one another is one of the core principles of quantum mechanics, and serves as foundation for quantum information processing. In particular, the interplay of constructive and destructive interference with the characteristic exchange statistics of indistinguishable particles give rise to the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect, where the bunching of bosons can lead to a perfect suppression of two-particle coincidences between the output ports of a balanced beam splitter. Conversely, in the case of two fermions, anti-bunching can systematically …

We consider an ensemble of indistinguishable quantum machines and show that quantum statistical effects can give rise to a genuine quantum enhancement of the collective thermodynamic performance. When multiple indistinguishable bosonic work resources are coupled to an external system, the internal energy change of the external system exhibits an enhancement arising from permutation symmetry in the ensemble, which is absent when the latter consists of distinguishable work resources.
Deriving effective Hamiltonian models plays an essential role in quantum theory, with particular emphasis in recent years on control and engineering problems. In this work, we present two symbolic methods for computing effective Hamiltonian models: the Non-perturbative Analytical Diagonalization (NPAD) and the Recursive Schrieffer-Wolff Transformation (RSWT). NPAD makes use of the Jacobi iteration and works without the assumptions of perturbation theory while retaining convergence, allowing to treat a very wide range of models. In the perturbation regime, it reduces to RSWT, which takes advant…

We study a quantum battery made out of $N$ non-mutually interacting qubits coupled to a dissipative single electromagnetic field mode in a resonator. We quantify the charging energy, ergotropy, transfer rate, and power of the system, showing that collective enhancements are still present despite of losses, and can even increase with dissipation. Moreover, we observe that a performance deterioration due to dissipation can be reduced by scaling up the battery size. This is useful for experimental realizations when controlling the quality of the resonator and the number of qubits are limiting fac…
The performances of quantum thermometry in thermal equilibrium together with the output power of certain class of quantum engines share a common characteristic: both are determined by the heat capacity of the probe or working medium. After noticing that the heat capacity of spin ensembles can be significantly modified by collective coupling with a thermal bath, we build on the above observation to investigate the respective impact of such collective effect on quantum thermometry and quantum engines. We find that the precision of the temperature estimation is largely increased at high temperatu…

Recent experiments have demonstrated that molecular polaritons, hybrid states of light and matter formed by the strong coupling between molecular electronic or vibrational excitations and an optical cavity, can substantially modify the physical and chemical properties of molecular systems. Here, we show that, by exploiting the collective character of molecular polaritons in conjunction with the effect of polaron decoupling, i.e., the suppression of environmental influence on the polariton, a superreaction can be realized, involving a collective enhancement of charge or excitation-energy transf…
As a model of so-called quantum battery (QB), quantum degrees of freedom as energy storage, we study a charging protocol of a many-body QB consisting of $N$ two-level systems (TLSs) using quantum heat engines (QHEs). We focus on the collective enhancement effects in the charging performance of QBs in comparison to the individual charging. It is a challenging goal of QBs to achieve large collective enhancements in the charging power and the capacity while keeping the experimental feasibility, the stability, and the cheapness of the required control and resources. We show that our model actually…
In this paper, we demonstrate the infrared photoluminescence emission from Ge(Si) quantum dots enhanced with collective Mie modes of silicon nanopillars. We show that the excitation of band edge dipolar modes of a linear nanopillar array results in strong reshaping of the photoluminescence spectra. Among other collective modes, the magnetic dipolar mode with the polarization along the array axis contributes the most to the emission spectrum exhibiting an experimentally measured Q-factor of around 500 for an array of 11 pillars. The results belong to the first experimental evidence of light emi…

Recent predictions for quantum-mechanical enhancements in the operation of small heat engines have raised renewed interest in their study from both a fundamental perspective and in view of applications. One essential question is whether collective effects may help to carry enhancements over larger scales, when increasing the number of systems composing the working substance of the engine. Such enhancements may consider not only power and efficiency, that is its performance, but, additionally, its constancy, i.e. the stability of the engine with respect to unavoidable environmental fluctuations…
In this work, sidebands suppression brought by buffer gas argon (Ar) in cesium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) at 852 nm is investigated. FADOF performances at different Ar pressures (0 torr, 1 torr, 5 torr and 10 torr) are compared, and a single-peak transmittance spectrum with peak transmittance up to 80% is achieved at the high Ar pressure. A detailed analysis shows that, this sidebands suppression comes from the depopulation enhancement by the buffer gas. This result can be generalized to other FADOFs with similar level structures such as the D2 lines of other alkali me…
