The performances of quantum thermometry in thermal equilibrium together with the output power of certain class of quantum engines share a common characteristic: both are determined by the heat capacity of the probe or working medium. After noticing that the heat capacity of spin ensembles can be significantly modified by collective coupling with a thermal bath, we build on the above observation to investigate the respective impact of such collective effect on quantum thermometry and quantum engines. We find that the precision of the temperature estimation is largely increased at high temperatures, reaching even the Heisenberg scaling - inversely proportional to the number of spins. For Otto engines operating close to the Carnot efficiency, collective coupling always enhances the output power. Some tangible experimental platforms are suggested.
We introduce a general framework for thermometry based on collisional models, where ancillas probe the temperature of the environment through an intermediary system. This allows for the generation of correlated ancillas even if they are initially independent. Using tools from parameter estimation theory, we show through a minimal qubit model that individual ancillas can already outperform the thermal Cramer-Rao bound. In addition, due to the steady-state nature of our model, when measured collectively the ancillas always exhibit superlinear scalings of the Fisher information. This means that e…
In collisional thermometry, a system in contact with the thermal bath is probed by a stream of ancillas. Coherences and collective measurements were shown to improve the Fisher information in some parameter regimes, for a stream of independent and identically prepared (i.i.d.) ancillas in some specific states [Seah et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 180602 (2019)]. Here we refine the analysis of this metrological advantage by optimising over the possible input ancilla states, also for block-i.i.d.~states of block size b=2. For both an indirect measurement interaction and a coherent energy exchange chan…
We consider the problem of estimating the temperature $ T $ of a very cold equilibrium sample. The temperature estimates are drawn from measurements performed on a quantum probe strongly coupled to it. We model this scenario by resorting to the canonical Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian and find analytically the exact stationary state of the probe for arbitrary coupling strength. In general, the probe does not reach thermal equilibrium with the sample, due to their non-perturbative interaction. We argue that this is advantageous for low temperature thermometry, as we show in our model that: (i) Th…
We introduce the estimation protocol for detecting the temperature of the transverse vibrational modes of linear ion crystal. We show that thanks to the laser induced laser coupling between the vibrational modes and the collective spin states the estimation of the temperature is carried out by set of measurements of the spin populations. We show that temperature estimation protocol using single ion as a quantum probe is optimal in a sense that the set of state projective measurement saturates the fundamental Cramer-Rao bound. We find a plateau of the maximal temperature sensitivity using ion c…

We investigate the sensing performance of a single-qubit quantum thermometer within a non-Markovian dynamical framework. By employing an exactly numerical hierarchical equations of the motion method, we go beyond traditional paradigms of the Born-Markov theory, the pure dephasing mechanism, and the weak-coupling approximation, which were commonly used in many previous studies of quantum thermometry. We find (i) the non-Markovian characteristics may boost the estimation efficiency, (ii) the sensitivity of quantum thermometry can be effectively optimized by engineering the proportions of differe…

We investigate heat engines whose working substance is made of two coupled qubits performing a generalised Otto cycle by varying their applied magnetic field or their interaction strength during the compression and expansion strokes. During the heating and cooling strokes, the two qubits are coupled to local and common environments that are not necessarily at equilibrium. We find instances of quantum engines coupled to non equilibrium common environments exhibiting non-trivial connections to quantum correlations as witnessed by a monotonic dependence of the work produced on quantum discord and…
As a model of so-called quantum battery (QB), quantum degrees of freedom as energy storage, we study a charging protocol of a many-body QB consisting of $N$ two-level systems (TLSs) using quantum heat engines (QHEs). We focus on the collective enhancement effects in the charging performance of QBs in comparison to the individual charging. It is a challenging goal of QBs to achieve large collective enhancements in the charging power and the capacity while keeping the experimental feasibility, the stability, and the cheapness of the required control and resources. We show that our model actually…
Recent predictions for quantum-mechanical enhancements in the operation of small heat engines have raised renewed interest in their study from both a fundamental perspective and in view of applications. One essential question is whether collective effects may help to carry enhancements over larger scales, when increasing the number of systems composing the working substance of the engine. Such enhancements may consider not only power and efficiency, that is its performance, but, additionally, its constancy, i.e. the stability of the engine with respect to unavoidable environmental fluctuations…
We consider an ensemble of indistinguishable quantum machines and show that quantum statistical effects can give rise to a genuine quantum enhancement of the collective thermodynamic performance. When multiple indistinguishable bosonic work resources are coupled to an external system, the internal energy change of the external system exhibits an enhancement arising from permutation symmetry in the ensemble, which is absent when the latter consists of distinguishable work resources.

We study a quantum heat engine at strong coupling between the system and the thermal reservoirs. Exploiting a collective coordinate mapping, we incorporate system-reservoir correlations into a consistent thermodynamic analysis, thus circumventing the usual restriction to weak coupling and vanishing correlations. We apply our formalism to the example of a quantum Otto cycle, demonstrating that the performance of the engine is diminished in the strong coupling regime with respect to its weakly coupled counterpart, producing a reduced net work output and operating at a lower energy conversion eff…
We investigate the performance of a microscopic quantum heat engine consisting of V- or Lambda-type emitters interacting collectively or independently when being in contact with environmental thermal reservoirs. Though the efficiency of a Carnot's cycle is always higher than those associated with these setups, we have found that the performance of the cooperative Lambda-type heat engine may be larger than that of the V-type under similar conditions. Cooperativity among the emitters plays an important role for the Lambda-type setup, significantly improving its performance, while is less relevan…

Collective behavior where a set of elements interact and generate effects that are beyond the reach of the individual non interacting elements, are always of great interest in physics. Quantum collective effects that have no classical analogue are even more intriguing. In this work we show how to construct collective quantum heat machines and explore their performance boosts with respect to regular machines. Without interactions between the machines the individual units operate in a stochastic, non-quantum manner. The construction of the collective machine becomes possible by introducing two s…

The hybridization of distinct quantum systems is now seen as an effective way to engineer the properties of an entire system leading to applications in quantum metamaterials, quantum simulation, and quantum metrology. One well known example is superconducting circuits coupled to ensembles of microscopic natural atoms. In such cases, the properties of the individual atom are intrinsic, and so are unchangeable. However, current technology allows us to fabricate large ensembles of macroscopic artificial atoms such as superconducting flux qubits, where we can really tailor and control the properti…

Ensembles of electron spins in hybrid microwave systems are powerful and versatile components for future quantum technologies. Quantum memories with high storage capacities are one such example which require long-lived states that can be addressed and manipulated coherently within the inhomogeneously broadened ensemble. This broadening is essential for true multimode memories, but induces a considerable spin dephasing and together with dissipation from a cavity interface poses a constraint on the memory's storage time. In this work we show how to overcome both of these limitations through the …
The power and efficiency of many-body heat engines can be boosted by performing cooperative non-adiabatic operations in contrast to the commonly used adiabatic implementations. Here, the key property relies on the fact that non-adiabaticity is required in order to allow for cooperative effects, that can use the thermodynamic resources only present in the collective non-passive state of a many-body system. In particular, we consider the efficiency of an Otto cycle, which increases with the number of copies used and reaches a many-body bound, which we discuss analytically.
We consider the dissipative charging process of quantum batteries in terms of a collisional model, where the batteries are coupled to a heat bath using non-energy preserving interactions. First, we show that for low temperatures the collective process can attain a charging power that increases polynomically with the number of batteries. The scaling we find is $N^3$ that, while being grater than the bound obtained for unitary processes, it has a lower efficiency. Then, we study the dissipative charging process of single battery using a time dependent Hamiltonian that generates coherences in the…
We study the finite-time effects in a quantum Otto cycle where a collective spin system is used as the working fluid. Starting from a simple one-qubit system we analyze the transition to the limit cycle in the case of a finite-time thermalization. If the system consists of a large sample of independent qubits interacting coherently with the heat bath, the superradiant equilibration is observed. We show that this phenomenon can boost the power of the engine. Mutual interaction of qubits in the working fluid is modeled by the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Hamiltonian. We demonstrate that in this case the…
Using an approach inspired from Spin Glasses, we show that the multimode disordered Dicke model is equivalent to a quantum Hopfield network. We propose variational ground states for the system at zero temperature, which we conjecture to be exact in the thermodynamic limit. These ground states contain the information on the disordered qubit-photon couplings. These results lead to two intriguing physical implications. First, once the qubit-photon couplings can be engineered, it should be possible to build scalable pattern-storing systems whose dynamics is governed by quantum laws. Second, we arg…
Quantum computers have now appeared in our society and are utilized for the investigation of science and engineering. At present, they have been built as intermediate-size computers containing about fifty qubits and are weak against noise effects. Hence, they are called noisy-intermediate scale quantum devices. In order to accomplish efficient quantum computation with using these machines, a key issue is going to be the coherent control of individual and collective quantum noises. In this work, we focus on a latter type and investigate formulations of the collective quantum noises represented …
A coherent state of many spins contains quantum entanglement which increases with a decrease in the collective spin value. We present a scheme to engineer this class of pure state based on incoherent spin pumping with a few collective raising/lowering operators. In a pumping scenario aimed for maximum entanglement, the steady-state of N pumped spin qubits realizes the ideal resource for the 1 to N/2 quantum telecloning. We show how the scheme can be implemented in a realistic system of atomic spin qubits in optical lattice. Error analysis show that high fidelity state engineering is possible f…
Quantum information theorems state that it is possible to exploit collective quantum resources to greatly enhance the charging power of quantum batteries (QBs) made of many identical elementary units. We here present and solve a model of a QB that can be engineered in solid-state architectures. It consists of $N$ two-level systems coupled to a single photonic mode in a cavity. We contrast this collective model ("Dicke QB"), whereby entanglement is genuinely created by the common photonic mode, to the one in which each two-level system is coupled to its own separate cavity mode ("Rabi QB"). By …
By simultaneously coupling multiple two-level artificial atoms to two superconducting resonators, we design a quantum switch that tunes the resonator-resonator coupling strength from zero to a large value proportional to the number of qubits. This process is implemented by engineering the qubits into different subradiant states, where the microwave photons decay from different qubits destructively interfere with each other such that the resonator-resonator coupling strength keeps stable in an open environment. Based on a three-step control scheme, we switch the coupling strength among differen…
