A unification of the set of quasiprobability representations using the mathematical theory of frames was recently developed for quantum systems with finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, in which it was proven that such representations require negative probability in either the states or the effects. In this article we extend those results to Hilbert spaces of infinite dimension, for which the celebrated Wigner function is a special case. Hence, this article presents a unified framework for describing the set of possible quasiprobability representations of quantum theory, and a proof that the presence of negativity is a necessary feature of such representations.
Several finite dimensional quasi-probability representations of quantum states have been proposed to study various problems in quantum information theory and quantum foundations. These representations are often defined only on restricted dimensions and their physical significance in contexts such as drawing quantum-classical comparisons is limited by the non-uniqueness of the particular representation. Here we show how the mathematical theory of frames provides a unified formalism which accommodates all known quasi-probability representations of finite dimensional quantum systems. Moreover, we…

Quasiprobability representations, such as the Wigner function, play an important role in various research areas. The inevitable appearance of negativity in such representations is often regarded as a signature of nonclassicality, which has profound implications for quantum computation. However, little is known about the minimal negativity that is necessary in general quasiprobability representations. Here we focus on a natural class of quasiprobability representations that is distinguished by simplicity and economy. We introduce three measures of negativity concerning the representations of qu…
Complete positivity is a ubiquitous assumption in the study of quantum systems interacting with the environment, but the lack of complete positivity of a quantum evolution (called the "negativity") can be used as a measure of the system-bath coupling and correlation. The negativity can be computed from the Choi representation of a channel, is always defined and bounded, and can be used to understand environmentally induced noise in a quantum system.
We investigate the time evolution of negativity and quantum discord for a pair of non-interacting qubits with one being weakly coupled to a decohering Davies--type Markovian environment. At initial time of preparation, the qubits are prepared in one of the maximally entangled pure Bell states. In the limiting case of pure decoherence (i.e. pure dephasing), both, the quantum discord and negativity decay to zero in the long time limit. In presence of a manifest dissipative dynamics, the entanglement negativity undergoes a sudden death at finite time while the quantum discord relaxes continuously…
Non-Gaussian states with Wigner negativity are of particular interest in quantum technology due to their potential applications in quantum computing and quantum metrology. However, how to create such states at a remote location remains a challenge, which is important for efficiently distributing quantum resource between distant nodes in a network. Here, we experimentally prepare optical non-Gaussian state with negative Wigner function at a remote node via local non-Gaussian operation and shared Gaussian entangled state existing quantum steering. By performing photon subtraction on one mode, Wi…
We study the behaviour of the Negativity of Wigner Function (NWF) as a measure of entanglement in non-Gaussian states under quantum polarisation converter devices. We analyze comparatively this quantity with other measures of entanglement in a system prepared in a superposition of two-mode coherent states. We show that the (WF) can be identified as a quantifier of non-Gaussian entanglement.
The presence of unique quantum correlations is the core of quantum information processing and general quantum theory. We address the fundamental question of how quantum correlations of a generic quantum system can be probed using correlation functions defined for quasiprobability distributions. In particular we discuss the possibility of probing the negativity of a quasiprobability by comparing moments of the Wigner function. We show that one must take at least the fourth moments to find the negativity in general and the eighth moments for states with a rotationally invariant Wigner function.
Non-Gaussian quantum states, described by negative valued Wigner functions, are important both for fundamental tests of quantum physics and for emerging quantum information technologies. However, they are vulnerable to dissipation. It is known, that the Wigner functions negativity could exist only if the overall quantum efficiency $η$ of the setup is higher than 1/2. Here we prove that this condition is not only necessary but also a sufficient one: the negativity always persists while this condition is fulfilled. At the same time, in the case of bright (multi-photon) non-Gaussian quantum state…
We develop theories of entanglement distribution and of entanglement dynamics for qudit systems, which incorporate previous qubit formulations. Using convex-roof extended negativity, we generalize previous qubit results for entanglement distribution with isotropic states and for entanglement dynamics with the depolarizing channel, and we establish a relation between these two types of entanglement networks.
We describe a scheme of quantum computation with magic states on qubits for which contextuality is a necessary resource possessed by the magic states. More generally, we establish contextuality as a necessary resource for all schemes of quantum computation with magic states on qubits that satisfy three simple postulates. Furthermore, we identify stringent consistency conditions on such computational schemes, revealing the general structure by which negativity of Wigner functions, hardness of classical simulation of the computation, and contextuality are connected.
We analyze two two-mode continuous variable separable states with the same marginal states. We adopt the definition of classicality in the form of well-defined positive Wigner function describing the state and find that although the states possess positive local Wigner functions, they exhibit negative Wigner functions for the global states. Using the negativity of Wigner function as an indicator of nonclassicality, we show that despite these states possess different negativities of the Wigner function, they do not reveal this difference as phase space nonclassicalities such as negativity of th…
We extend the concept of the negativity, a good measure of entanglement for bipartite pure states, to mixed states by means of the convex-roof extension. We show that the measure does not increase under local quantum operations and classical communication, and derive explicit formulae for the entanglement measure of isotropic states and Werner states, applying the formalism presented by Vollbrecht and Werner [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 64}, 062307 (2001)].
One of the central foundational questions of physics is to identify what makes a system quantum as opposed to classical. One seminal notion of classicality of a quantum system is the existence of a non-contextual hidden variable model as introduced in the early work by Bell, Kochen and Specker. In quantum optics, the non-negativity of the Wigner function is a ubiquitous notion of classicality. In this work we establish an equivalence between these two concepts. In particular, we show that any non-contextual hidden variable model for Gaussian quantum optics has an alternative non-negative Wigne…
A crucial goal of quantum information is to find new ways to exploit the properties of quantum devices as resources. One of the prominent properties of quantum devices of particular interest is their negativity in quasi-probability representations, intensively studied in foundational and practical investigations. In this article, we introduce the concept of Absolute Negativity to characterise the negativity of sets of quantum devices in a basis-independent way. Moreover, we provide a resource theory for our relational notion of Absolute Negativity, which applies to sets of quantum state-measur…
The notion of non-classical correlations is a powerful contrivance for explaining phenomena exhibited in quantum systems. It is well known, however, that quantum systems are not free to explore arbitrary correlations---the church of the smaller Hilbert space only accepts monogamous congregants. We demonstrate how to characterize the limits of what is quantum mechanically possible with a computable measure, entanglement negativity. We show that negativity only saturates the standard linear monogamy inequality in trivial cases implied by its monotonicity under LOCC, and derive a necessary and su…
We describe a universal scheme of quantum computation by state injection on rebits (states with real density matrices). For this scheme, we establish contextuality and Wigner function negativity as computational resources, extending results of [M. Howard et al., Nature 510, 351--355 (2014)] to two-level systems. For this purpose, we define a Wigner function suited to systems of $n$ rebits, and prove a corresponding discrete Hudson's theorem. We introduce contextuality witnesses for rebit states, and discuss the compatibility of our result with state-independent contextuality.
Wigner negativity, as a well-known indicator of nonclassicality, plays an essential role in quantum computing and simulation using continuous-variable systems. Recently, it has been proven that Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is a prerequisite to generate Wigner negativity between two remote modes. Motivated by the demand of real-world quantum network, here we investigate the shareability of generated Wigner negativity in the multipartite scenario from a quantitative perspective. By establishing a monogamy relation akin to the generalized Coffman-Kundu-Wootters inequality, we show that the am…
We present a set of inequalities based on mean values of quantum mechanical observables nonlinear entanglement witnesses for bipartite quantum systems. These inequalities give rise to sufficient and necessary conditions for separability of all bipartite pure states and even some mixed states. In terms of these mean values of quantum mechanical observables a measurable lower bound of the convex-roof extension of the negativity is derived.
The appearance of negative terms in quasiprobability representations of quantum theory is known to be inevitable, and, due to its equivalence with the onset of contextuality, of central interest in quantum computation and information. Until recently, however, nothing has been known about how much negativity is necessary in a quasiprobability representation. Zhu proved that the upper and lower bounds with respect to one type of negativity measure are saturated by quasiprobability representations which are in one-to-one correspondence with the elusive symmetric informationally complete quantum m…
Among all entanglement measures negativity arguably is the best known and most popular tool to quantify bipartite quantum correlations. It is easily computed for arbitrary states of a composite system and can therefore be applied to discuss entanglement in an ample variety of situations. However, its direct physical meaning has not been pointed out yet. We show that the negativity can be viewed as an estimator of how many degrees of freedom of two subsystems are entangled. As it is possible to give lower bounds for the negativity even in a device-independent setting, it is the appropriate quan…
The dynamical equation of hybrid systems, being the combination of Schrödinger and Liouville equations, produces noncausal evolution when the initial state of interacting quantum and classical mechanical systems is as it is demanded in discussions regarding the problem of measurement. It is found that state of quantum mechanical system instantaneously collapses due to the non-negativity of probabilities.
Quantum coherence and entanglement are two key features in quantum mechanics and play important roles in quantum information processing and quantum computation. We provide a general triangle-like inequality satisfied by the $l_1$-norm measure of coherence for convex combination of arbitrary $n$ pure states of a quantum state $ρ$. Furthermore, we present triangle-like inequality for the convex-roof extended negativity for any states of rank 2, which gives a positive answer to a conjecture raised in [Phys. Rev. A 96, 062308 (2017)]. Detailed examples are given to illustrate the relations charact…
Numerous work had been done to quantify the entanglement of a two-qubit quantum state, but it can be seen that previous works were based on joint measurements on two copies or more than two copies of a quantum state under consideration. In this work, we show that a single copy and two measurements are enough to estimate the entanglement quantifier like entanglement negativity and concurrence. To achieve our aim, we establish a relationship between the entanglement negativity and the minimum eigenvalue of structural physical approximation of partial transpose of an arbitrary two-qubit state. Th…
We develop a resource theory for continuous-variable systems grounded on operations routinely available within current quantum technologies. In particular, the set of free operations is convex and includes quadratic transformations and conditional coarse-grained measurements. The present theory lends itself to quantify both quantum non-Gaussianity and Wigner negativity as resources, depending on the choice of the free-state set --- i.e., the convex hull of Gaussian states or the states with positive Wigner function, respectively. After showing that the theory admits no maximally resourceful st…
Quantum Discord (QD) is a measure of the total quantum non-local correlations of a quantum system. The formalism of quantum discord has been applied to various two-qubit mixed states and it has been reported that there is a non-zero quantum discord even when the states are unentangled. To this end, we have calculated the Quantum Discord for higher than two qubit mixed state, that is, the generalized n-qubit Werner state with a bipartite split. We found that the QD saturates to a straight line with unit slope in the thermodynamic limit. Qualitative studies of entanglement between the two subsys…
In this work, we study the quantum Fisher information (QFI) per particle of an open (particles can enter and leave the system) and dissipative (far from thermodynamical equilibrium) steady state system of two qubits in noisy channels. We concentrate on two noisy channels these are dephasing and non-dephasing channels. We will show that under certain conditions QFI per particle is slightly greater than 1 for both systems. This means that both systems can be slightly entangled.
In a numerical study, we investigate the steady-state generation of nonclassical states of light from a coherently driven two-level atom in a one-dimensional waveguide. Specifically, we look for states with a negative Wigner function, since such nonclassical states are a resource for quantum information processing applications, including quantum computing. We find that a waveguide terminated by a mirror at the position of the atom can provide Wigner-negative states, while an infinite waveguide yields strictly positive Wigner functions. Moreover, our investigation reveals a connection between t…
Entanglement negativity is a measure of mixed-state entanglement increasingly used to investigate and characterize emerging quantum many-body phenomena, including quantum criticality and topological order. We present two results for the entanglement negativity: a disentangling theorem, which allows the use of this entanglement measure as a means to detect whether a wave-function of three subsystems $A$, $B$, and $C$ factorizes into a product state for parts $AB_1$ and $B_2C$; and a monogamy relation, which states that if $A$ is very entangled with $B$, then $A$ cannot be simultaneaously very e…
We present a method for estimating the probabilities of outcomes of a quantum circuit using Monte Carlo sampling techniques applied to a quasiprobability representation. Our estimate converges to the true quantum probability at a rate determined by the total negativity in the circuit, using a measure of negativity based on the 1-norm of the quasiprobability. If the negativity grows at most polynomially in the size of the circuit, our estimator converges efficiently. These results highlight the role of negativity as a measure of non-classical resources in quantum computation.
We propose the square of convex-roof extended negativity(SCREN) as a powerful candidate to characterize strong monogamy of multi-party quantum entanglement. We first provide a strong monogamy inequality of multi-party entanglement using SCREN, and show that the tangle-based multi-qubit strong monogamy inequality can be rephrased by SCREN. We further show that SCREN strong monogamy inequality is still true for the counterexamples that violate tangle-based strong monogamy inequality in higher-dimensional quantum systems rather than qubits. We also analytically show that SCREN strong monogamy ine…
The quantum backflow effect is a counterintuitive behavior of the probability current of a free particle, which may be negative even for states with vanishing negative momentum component. Here we address the notion of nonclassicality arising from the backflow effect, i.e. from the negativity of the probability current, and analyze its relationships with the notion of nonclassicality based on the negativity of the Wigner function. Our results suggest that backflow is linked to a different, and in fact more restrictive, notion of nonclassicality, the negativity of the Wigner function being only …
Continuous-wave (CW) squeezed light is used in generation of various optical quantum states thus is a fundamental resource of fault-tolerant universal quantum computation using optical continuous variables. To realize a practical quantum computer, a waveguide optical parametric amplifier (OPA) is an attractive CW squeezed light source in terms of its THz-order bandwidth and suitability for modularization. The usages of a waveguide OPA in quantum applications thus far, however, are limited due to the difficulty of the generation of the squeezed light with a high purity. In this paper, we report…
The characterization of quantum features in large Hilbert spaces is a crucial requirement for testing quantum protocols. In the continuous variables encoding, quantum homodyne tomography requires an amount of measurements that increases exponentially with the number of involved modes, which practically makes the protocol intractable even with few modes. Here we introduce a new technique, based on a machine learning protocol with artificial Neural Networks, that allows to directly detect negativity of the Wigner function for multimode quantum states. We test the procedure on a whole class of nu…
For bipartite quantum states we obtain lower bounds on two important entanglement measures, concurrence and negativity, studying the inequalities for the expectation value of a projector on some subspace of the Hilbert space. Several applications, including analysis of stability of entanglement under various perturbations of a state, are discussed.
We propose replacing concurrence by convex-roof extended negativity (CREN) for studying monogamy of entanglement (MoE). We show that all proven MoE relations using concurrence can be rephrased in terms of CREN. Furthermore we show that higher-dimensional (qudit) extensions of MoE in terms of CREN are not disproven by any of the counterexamples used to disprove qudit extensions of MoE in terms of concurrence. We further test the CREN version of MoE for qudits by considering fully or partially coherent mixtures of a qudit W-class state with the vacuum and show that the CREN version of MoE for qu…
Entanglement plays a central role in quantum information processing, indicating the non-local correlation of quantum matters. However, few effective ways are known to detect the amount of entanglement of an unknown quantum state. In this work, we propose a scheme to estimate the entanglement negativity of any bi-partition of a composite system. The proposed scheme is based on the random unitary evolution and local measurements on the single-copy quantum states, which is more practical compared with former methods based on collective measurements on many copies of the identical state. Meanwhile…
Discriminating between quantum computing architectures that can provide quantum advantage from those that cannot is of crucial importance. From the fundamental point of view, establishing such a boundary is akin to pinpointing the resources for quantum advantage; from the technological point of view, it is essential for the design of non-trivial quantum computing architectures. Wigner negativity is known to be a necessary resource for computational advantage in several quantum-computing architectures, including those based on continuous variables (CVs). However, it is not a sufficient resource…
In this work we examine quantum states which have non-negative amplitudes (in a fixed basis) and the channels which preserve them. These states include the ground states of stoquastic Hamiltonians and they are of interest since they avoid the Sign Problem and can thus be efficiently simulated. In optimization theory, the convex cone generated by such states is called the set of completely positive (CP) matrices (not be confused with completely positive superoperators). We introduce quantum channels which preserve these states and call them completely positive completely positive. To study thes…
While negativity in phase space is a well-known signature of nonclassicality, a wide variety of nonclassical states require their characterization beyond negativity. We establish a framework of nonclassicality in phase space that addresses nonclassical states comprehensively with a direct experimental evidence. This includes the negativity of phase-space distribution as a special case and further analyzes quantum states with positive distributions effectively. We prove that it detects all nonclassical Gaussian states and all non-Gaussian states of arbitrary dimension remarkably by examining th…
We investigate the quantum correlation in a qutrit-qubit mixed spin chain based on measurement-induced disturbance (MID) [S. Luo, Phys. Rev. A, 77, (2008) 022301]. We also compare MID and thermal entanglement measured by negativity and illustrate their different characteristics.

This paper deals with the entanglement, as quantified by the negativity, of pure quantum states chosen at random from the invariant Haar measure. We show that it is a constant (0.72037) multiple of the maximum possible entanglement. In line with the results based on the concentration of measure, we find evidence that the convergence to the final value is exponentially fast. We compare the analytically calculated mean and standard deviation with those calculated numerically for pure states generated via pseudorandom unitary matrices proposed by Emerson et. al. [Science, 302, 3098, (2003)]. Fina…
Quantum entanglement is an enigmatic and powerful property that has attracted much attention due to its usefulness in new ways of communications, like quantum teleportation and quantum key distribution. Much effort has been done to quantify entanglement. Indeed, there exist some well-established separability criterion and analytical formulas for the entanglement of bipartite systems. In some of these, the crucial elements are the eigenvalues of the partial transpose of the density matrix. In this paper, we show that one can also have information about the entanglement of bipartite state, in C2…
Quantum coherence plays a central role in various research areas. The $l_1$-norm of coherence is one of the most important coherence measures that are easily computable, but it is not easy to find a simple interpretation. We show that the $l_1$-norm of coherence is uniquely characterized by a few simple axioms, which demonstrates in a precise sense that it is the analog of negativity in entanglement theory and sum negativity in the resource theory of magic-state quantum computation. We also provide an operational interpretation of the $l_1$-norm of coherence as the maximum entanglement, measur…
Two notions of nonclassicality that have been investigated intensively are: (i) negativity, that is, the need to posit negative values when representing quantum states by quasiprobability distributions such as the Wigner representation, and (ii) contextuality, that is, the impossibility of a noncontextual hidden variable model of quantum theory (also known as the Bell-Kochen-Specker theorem). Although both of these notions were meant to characterize the conditions under which a classical explanation cannot be provided, we demonstrate that they prove inadequate to the task and we argue for a pa…

The monogamy relation for quantum correlations is not satisfied by all measures for all multiparty quantum states. We prove that an arbitrary quantum state which is nonmonogamous for negativity will become monogamous if a finite number of copies of the same state is provided. We refer this as activation of nonmonogamous states. We also show that multiple copies of a state satisfy monogamy for negativity if it does so for a single copy. The results are true for all quantum states of an arbitrary number of parties. Moreover, we find that two different three-qubit pure states which individually v…
A measure of nonclassicality of quantum states based on the volume of the negative part of the Wigner function is proposed. We analyze this quantity for Fock states, squeezed displaced Fock states and cat-like states defined as coherent superposition of two Gaussian wave packets.
