We present a generic transfer matrix approach for the description of the interaction of atoms possessing multiple ground state and excited state sublevels with light fields. This model allows us to treat multi-level atoms as classical scatterers in light fields modified by, in principle, arbitrarily complex optical components such as mirrors, resonators, dispersive or dichroic elements, or filters. We verify our formalism for two prototypical sub-Doppler cooling mechanisms and show that it agrees with the standard literature.
We derive an explicit formula for an entanglement measure of mixed quantum states in a multi-level atom interacting with a cavity field within the framework of the quantum mutual entropy. We describe its theoretical basis and discuss its practical relevance (especially in comparison with already known pure state results). The effect of the number of levels involved on the entanglement is demonstrated via examples of three-, four- and five-level atom. Numerical calculations under current experimental conditions are performed and it is found that the number of levels present changes the general …
A general theory is presented for the treatment of decoherence of a multilevel quantum system (with many degrees of freedom) interacting with multi-bath reservoir and driven by ac fields. In this approach, the system is described by a reduced density operator and the multi-bath reservoir is characterized by a number of spectral densities. The reduced density operator is governed by the master equation in which the effect of ac driving fields and the leakage to non-computational states are included. The theory is applied to the study of decoherence of a two-dimensional (2D) SQUID flux qubit cou…
We consider the interaction of a small quantum system (a qubit) with a structured environment consisting on many levels. The qubit will experience a decoherence process, which implies that its initial information will be transferred to the environment. We investigate how this information is distributed on a given subset of levels as a function of its size, using the mutual information between both entities, in the spirit of the partial information plots studied by Zurek. In this case we observe some differences, which arise from the fact that we are partitioning just one quantum system, and no…
In a recent work, we provided a standardized and exact analytical formalism for computing in the semiclassical regime the radiation force experienced by a two-level atom interacting with any number of plane waves with arbitrary intensities, frequencies, phases, and propagation directions [J. Opt. Soc. Am. B \textbf{35}, 127-132 (2018)]. Here, we extend this treatment to the multilevel atom case, where degeneracy of the atomic levels is considered and polarization of light enters into play. A matrix formalism is developed to this aim.
We study a system of atoms that are laser-driven to $nD_{3/2}$ Rydberg states and assess how accurately they can be mapped onto spin-$1/2$ particles for the quantum simulation of anisotropic Ising magnets. Using non-perturbative calculations of the pair interaction potentials between two atoms in the presence of both electric and magnetic fields, we emphasize the importance of a careful selection of the experimental parameters in order to maintain the Rydberg blockade and avoid excitation of unwanted Rydberg states. We then benchmark these theoretical observations against experiments using two…
We consider a medium of multilevel atomic systems interacting with radiation pulses. A relatively simple technique of analytic calculations is proposed, which allows revealing all necessary conditions (with sufficient conditions to be checked separately) imposed on the interaction parameters, for which the mean dipole moment of a multilevel atomic medium vanishes, i.e., the medium becomes transparent via adiabatic interaction. The proposed technique is based on the method of quasienergies and illustrated for three- and five-level atomic systems. The necessary conditions for the propagation len…
We study spontaneous emission from an atom under the action of laser fields. We consider two different energy level diagrams. The first one consists of two levels resonantly driven by laser radiation where either of levels may decay to a separate level. For such a system we show that the presence of the second decay channel may deteriorate the destructive interference occurring in case of one decay channel because of Autler-Townes effect. The second diagram represents two two-level resonantly driven systems with the upper levels decaying to a common level. For this diagram we show that there i…
In this communication we discuss SU(1,1)- and SU(2)-squeezing of an interacting system of radiation modes in a quadratic medium in the framework of Lie algebra. We show that regardless of which state being initially considered, squeezing can be periodically generated.
A method to build various integrable models for description of coherent excitation of multilevel media by laser pulses is suggested. Distribution functions over the energy levels of quantum systems depending on the time and frequency detuning are obtained. The distributions follow from Schrödinger equation exact solutions and give the complete dynamical description of laser-excited quantum multilevel systems. Interpretation based on the Fourier spectra of the probability amplitudes of a quantum system is presented. The spectra are expressed in terms of orthonormal polynomials and their weight …
In quantum information processing, quantum cavities play an important role by providing the mechanisms to transfer information between atom qubits and photon qubits, or to couple single atoms with the optical modes of the cavity field. We explore numerically the population transfer in an atom + cavity system by using the $π$-pulse and adiabatic passage methods. While the first method is very efficient transferring the atomic population for no radiative decay of the intermediate level, the second method shows very interesting nonadiabatic, resonance-like properties that can be used to achieve v…
We compute the spectrum of emitted radiation by a generic quantum system interacting with an external classic noise. Our motivation is to understand this phenomenon within the framework of collapse models. However the computation is general and applies practically to any situation where a quantum system interacts with a noise. The computation is carried out at a perturbative level. This poses problems concerning the correct way of performing the analysis, as repeatedly discussed in the literature. We will clarify also this issue.
We study the contributions of off-resonant transitions to the dynamics of a system of N multilevel atoms sharing one excitation and interacting with the quantized vector electromagnetic field. The Rotating Wave Approximation significantly simplifies the derivation of the equations of motion describing the collective atomic dynamics, but it leads to an incorrect expression for the dispersive part of the atom-atom interaction terms. For the case of two-level atoms and a scalar electromagnetic field, it turns out that the atom-atom interaction can be recovered correctly if integrals over the phot…
In this work, we study the coupling between a superconducting device as a dc SQUID, simulated from an artificial atom with two degrees of freedom, and a single-mode radiation field for the information transference process. We demonstrate that the population transfer among the energy levels of the artificial atom yields an entanglement dynamics, which leads to the generation of a pair of photons. Moreover, we show the quantum information transference between the internal modes of the superconducting device, initially in a maximally entangled state, and the radiation field. The artificial atom a…
We quantify multiparticle quantum entanglement in a system of N two-level atoms interacting with a squeezed vacuum state of the electromagnetic field. We calculate the amount of quantum entanglement present among one hundred such two-level atoms and also show the variation of that entanglement with the radiation field parameter. We show the continuous variation of the amount of quantum entanglement as we continuously increase the number of atoms from N=2 to N=100. We also discuss that the multiparticle correlations among the N two-level atoms are made up of all possible bipartite correlations …
We introduce a combination of coherent states as variational test functions for the atomic and radiation sectors to describe a system of Na three- level atoms interacting with a one-mode quantised electromagnetic field, with and without the rotating wave approximation, which preserves the symmetry presented by the Hamiltonian. These provide us with the possibility of finding analytical solutions for the ground and first excited states. We study the properties of these solutions for the V-configuration in the double resonance condition, and calculate the expectation values of the number of phot…
In this paper we consider a system of two two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode quantized electromagnetic field in a lossless resonant cavity via $l$-photon-transition mechanism. The field and the atoms are initially prepared in the coherent state and the excited atomic states, respectively. For this system we investigate the entropy squeezing, the atomic variances, the von Neumann entropy and the atomic inversions for the single-atom case. We show that the more the number of the parties in the system the less the amounts of the nonclassical effects exhibited in the entropy squeezing.…
We study the spontaneous excitation of a radially polarized static multilevel atom outside a spherically symmetric black hole in multi-polar interaction with quantum electromagnetic fluctuations in the Boulware, Unruh and Hartle-Hawking vacuum states. We find that spontaneous excitation does not occur in the Boulware vacuum, and, in contrast to the scalar field case, spontaneous emission rate is not well-behaved at the event horizon as result of the blow-up of the proper acceleration of the static atom. However, spontaneous excitation can take place both in the Unruh and the Hartle-Hawking vac…
We present an efficient theoretical method for calculating the time evolution of the density matrix of a multilevel quantum system weakly interacting with incoherent light. The method combines the Bloch-Redfield theory with a partial secular approximation for one-photon coherences, resulting in a master equation that explicitly exposes the reliance on transition rates and the angles between transition dipole moments in the energy basis. The modified Bloch-Redfield master equation allows an unambiguous distinction between the regimes of quantum coherent vs. incoherent energy transfer under inco…
We study the collective radiation properties of cold, trapped ensembles of atoms. We consider the high density regime with the mean interatomic distance being comparable to, or smaller than, the wavelength of the resonant optical radiation emitted by the atoms. We find that the emission rate of a photon from an excited atomic ensemble is strongly enhanced for an elongated cloud. We analyze collective single-excitation eigenstates of the atomic ensemble and find that the absorption/emission spectrum is broadened and shifted to lower frequencies as compared to the non-interacting (low density) o…
We consider the single photon transistor in coupled cavity system of resonators interacting with multilevel superconducting artificial atom simultaneously. Effective single mode transformation is used for the diagonalization of the the hamiltonian and impedance matching in terms of the normal modes. Storage and transmission of the incident field are described by the interactions between the cavities controlling the atomic transitions of lowest lying states. Rabi splitting of vacuum induced multiphoton transitions is considered in input/output relations by the quadrature operators in the absenc…
We examine the dynamics of subsystems of bipartite and tripartite quantum systems with nonlinear Hamiltonians. We consider two models which capture the generic features of open quantum systems: a three-level atom interacting with a single-mode radiation field, and a three-level atom interacting with two field modes which do not directly interact with each other. The entanglement of specific initially unentangled states of the atom-field system is examined through the time-varying subsystem von Neumann entropy (SVNE). The counterparts of near-revivals and fractional revivals of the initial stat…

We study a model of two coupled two-level atoms (qubits) interacting off-resonance (at non-zero detuning) with a single mode radiation field. This system is of special interest in the field of quantum information processing (QIP) and can be realized in electron spin states in quantum dots or Rydberg atoms in optical cavities and superconducting qubits in linear resonators. We present an exact analytical solution for the time evolution of the system starting from any initial state. Utilizing this solution, we show how the entanglement sudden death (ESD), which represents a major threat to QIP, …
We investigate the physics of a single trapped electron interacting with a radiation field without the dipole approximation. This gives new physical insights in the so-called geonium theory.
A unified integrable system, generating a new series of interacting matter-radiation models with interatomic coupling and different atomic frequencies, is constructed and exactly solved through algebraic Bethe ansatz. Novel features in Rabi oscillation and vacuum Rabi splitting are shown on the example of an integrable two-atom Buck-Sukumar model with resolution of some important controversies in the Bethe ansatz solution including its possible degeneracy for such models.
The stimulated emission from an atom interacting with radiation in non-equilibrium state is considered. The stochastic limit, applied to the non-relativistic Hamiltonian describing the interaction, shows that the state of atoms, driven by some non-equilibrium state of the field approaches a stationary state which can continuously emit photon, unlike the case with an equilibrium state.
We study the effective dynamics of two mirrors, forming an optical cavity, and interacting with the cavity field via radiation pressure. We pursue a perturbative influence functional approach to trace out the degrees-of-freedom of the field, and obtain the second order effective action for the system composed by the mirrors. We find that the interaction between the mirrors is mediated by pairs of field modes, which combine in such a way to give rise to two different interaction channels. We find that the quantum and thermal fluctuations of the cavity field result in coloured, Gaussian stochast…
We examine quantum statistics of optical photons emitted from atomic ensembles which are classically driven and simultaneously coupled to a two-level atom via microwave photon exchange. Quantum statistics and correlations are analyzed by calculating second order coherence degree, von Neumann entropy, spin squeezing for multi-particle entanglement, as well as genuine two and three-mode entanglement parameters for steady state and non-equilibrium situations. Coherent transfer of population between the radiation modes and quantum state mapping between the two-level atom and the optical modes are …
We introduce a group-theoretical extension of the Dicke model which describes an ensemble of two-level atoms interacting with a finite radiation field. The latter is described by a spin model whose main feature is that it possesses a maximum number of excitations. The approach adopted here leads to a nonlinear extension of the Dicke model that takes into account both an intensity dependent coupling between the atoms and the radiation field, and an additional nonlinear Kerr-like or Pösch-Teller-like oscillator term, depending on the degree of nonlinearity. We use the energy surface minimization…
In this paper we consider some (generalized) models which deal with n--level atom interacting with a single radiation mode and study a general structure of Rabi floppings of these generalized ones in the strong coupling regime. To solve these models we introduce multi cat states of Schr{\" o}dinger in our terminology and extend the result in (quant--ph/0203135) which Rabi frequencies are given by matrix elements of generalized coherent operators (quant--ph/0202081) under the rotating--wave approximation. Our work is a full generalization of Frasca (quant--ph/0111134) and Fujii (quant--ph/02031…
Bad cavity lasers are experiencing renewed interest in the context of active optical frequency standards, due to their enhanced robustness against fluctuations of the laser cavity. The gain medium would consist of narrow-linewidth atoms, either trapped inside the cavity or intersecting the cavity mode dynamically. A series of effects like the atoms finite velocity distribution, atomic interactions, or interactions of realistic multilevel atoms with auxiliary or stray fields can lead to an inhomogeneous broadening of the atomic gain profile. This causes the emergence of instable regimes of lase…
A thought experiment is proposed to demonstrate the existence of a gravitational, vector Aharonov-Bohm effect. A connection is made between the gravitational, vector Aharonov-Bohm effect and the principle of local gauge invariance for nonrelativistic quantum matter interacting with weak gravitational fields. The compensating vector fields that are necessitated by this local gauge principle are shown to be incorporated by the DeWitt minimal coupling rule. The nonrelativistic Hamiltonian for weak, time-independent fields interacting with quantum matter is then extended to time-dependent fields, …
We consider a multilevel hydrogen atom in interaction with the quantum electromagnetic field and separately calculate the contributions of the vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction to the rate of change of the mean atomic energy of the atom for uniform acceleration. It is found that the acceleration disturbs the vacuum fluctuations in such a way that the delicate balance between the contributions of vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction that exists for inertial atoms is broken, so that the transitions to higher-lying states from ground state are possible even in vacuum. In contrast to …
Interacting matter-radiation models close to physical systems are proposed, which without rotating wave approximation and with matter-matter interactions are Bethe ansatz solvable. This integrable system is constructed from the elliptic Gaudin model at high spin limit, where radiative excitation can be included perturbatively.
We study, in the multipolar coupling scheme, a uniformly accelerated multilevel hydrogen atom in interaction with the quantum electromagnetic field near a conducting boundary and separately calculate the contributions of the vacuum fluctuation and radiation reaction to the rate of change of the mean atomic energy. It is found that the perfect balance between the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction that ensures the stability of ground-state atoms is disturbed, making spontaneous transition of ground-state atoms to excited states possible in vacuum with a conducting bound…
We review the calculation of Fermi's golden rule for a system of $N$-body dipoles, magnetic or electric, weakly interacting with a blackbody radiation. By using the magnetic or electric field-field correlation function evaluated in the 1960s for the black body radiation, we deduce a general formula for the transition rates and study its limiting, fully coherent or fully incoherent, regimes.
