The stimulated emission from an atom interacting with radiation in non-equilibrium state is considered. The stochastic limit, applied to the non-relativistic Hamiltonian describing the interaction, shows that the state of atoms, driven by some non-equilibrium state of the field approaches a stationary state which can continuously emit photon, unlike the case with an equilibrium state.
The Tavis-Cummings model of N two-level atoms interacting with a single resonant mode is extended to various cases of off-resonance, initial photon densities, and atom number N. For stimulated absorption and small numbers of mean photon number a very unexpected results showing well defined rise and fall of oscillation is found.
We study the effect of quantum interference on the structure and properties of spontaneous and stimulated transitions in a degenerate V-type three-level atom with an arbitrary total momentum of each state. Explicit expressions for the factors in the terms of the relaxation operator and stimulated transition operator with account of quantum interference effects are obtained. It has been demonstrated that the condition for the dipole transition moments to be parallel is insufficient and for conventional atoms the interference cross terms are zeros for both operators. The conditions when quantum …
We present a three-dimensional theory of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) or superradiance. In particular we address how the spatial and temporal properties of the generated SRS beam, or Stokes beam, of radiation depends on the spatial properties of the gain medium. Maxwell equations for the Stokes field operators and of the atomic operators are solved analytically and a correlation function for the Stokes field is derived. In the analysis we identify a superradiating part of the Stokes radiation that exhibit beam characteristics. We show how the intensity in this beam builds up in time and a…
The Formation of metastable molecules (Feshbach resonances) at the collision of two atoms and subsequent stimulated transition to a lower unbound electronic molecular state, with emission of a photon of the laser radiation has been investigated. This can develop, in particular, for $Rb_2$ molecules due to resonance scattering of two $Rb$ atoms. The considered process is a basis for the creation of excimer lasers. Expressions for the cross sections of elastic and inelastic resonance scattering and the intensity of the stimulated emission of the photons have been obtained.
This paper reexamines the results of Cummings in which the quantum mechanical two-level-system (TLS) interacts with the electromagnetic field with various initial distributions and extends that work for both resonant and non-resonant to times large enough to display multiple photon echoes. The results presented here include the initial pure coherent state, the field whose initial density matrix is the Gaussian superposition of coherent states (blackbody radiation) and density matrices of the field represented by various combinations of mixed coherent and thermal states with and without squeezi…
Arrays of 10 nm-diameter point contacts of exchange-coupled spin-majority/spin-minority ferromagnetic metals, integrated into infrared-terahertz range photon resonators, are fabricated and measured electrically and optically. Giant, threshold-type electronic excitations under high-current pumping of the devices are observed as abrupt but reversible steps in device resistance, in many cases in access of 100%, which correlate with optical emission from the devices. The results are interpreted as due to stimulated spin-flip electron-photon relaxation in the system.
We investigate surface plasmon amplification in a silver nanoparticle coupled to an externally driven three-level gain medium, and show that quantum coherence significantly enhances the generation of surface plasmons. Surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation is achieved in the absence of population inversion on the spasing transition, which reduces the pump requirements. The coherent drive allows us to control the dynamics, and holds promise for quantum control of nanoplasmonic devices.
In this paper we investigate the ground-state properties and related quantum phase transitions for the two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a single-mode optical cavity. Apart from the usual normal and superradiant phases multi-stable macroscopic quantum states are realized by means of the spin-coherent-state variational method. We demonstrate analytically the stimulated radiation from collective state of atomic population inversion, which does not exist in the normal Dicke model with single-component atoms. It is also revealed that the stimulated radiation can be generated only from one …
We regard the Parikh-Wilczek's tunnelling model of Hawking radiation as a quantum mechanical process of stimulated emission. The hypothesized microstates are found at the horizon with double degeneracy. A Jaynes-Cummings toy model for a black hole in the cavity is proposed to demonstrate how to write a qubit via the angular-dependent transition coupling, which might be related to the soft Goldstone hairs at analytic continuation. At last, we show how information is retained in the black hole by computing the time evolution of mutual entanglement entropy in the cavity-black holes system.
Do the wavepacket-size of free-electron wavefunction and its history have physical effect in its interaction with light? Here we answer this problem by analyzing a QED model, considering both spontaneous and stimulated emission of quantized radiation field. For coherent radiation (Glauber state), we confirm that stimulated emission/absorption of photons has a dependence on wavepacket size that decays when it exceeds the interacting radiation wavelength, consistently and complementarily with Schrodinger equation analysis of wavepacket acceleration in classical electromagnetic field. Furthermore…
The general expressions for the time development of the ensemble averages of E^- and E^-E^+ are found for N two level molecules (TLMs) interacting with a single mode electromagnetic field. The TLMs are assumed to be at equivalent mode positions in the field. In the main body of the paper, the general results are then simplified by assuming that all TLMs are in the up state at time 0. Examples of spontaneous emission behavior including both Super Radiant behavior and emission suppression are shown in Appendix E while stimulated emission with all TLMs initially in the lower state is examined in …
In a famous paper where he introduces the A and B coefficients, Einstein considered that atomic decays of excited atoms can be stimulated by light waves. Here we consider that atomic decays can also be stimulated by atomic waves. It is however necessary to change the Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics of thermal equilibrium into Bose-Einstein statistics and to introduce a coefficient C which complements the list of the coefficients introduced by Einstein. Stimulated emission of light can be considered as the first step towards the laser. Similarly, stimulated production of matter waves can be consid…
The blackbody is considered in the external general field. The additional coefficients of stimulated emission and absorption are introduced into the Einstein mechanism. Then, the generalized Planck formula is derived. The Einstein and Debye formula for the specific heat is possible to generalize. The application of the theory to the sonoluminescence, the relic radiation and solar spectrum is discussed.
We numerically solve the Liouville equation for the Tavis Cummings model of multiple spins coupled to a lossless single mode cavity, starting from an initial condition with small numbers of fully polarized spins tipped by a specified angle, and the cavity in its ground Fock state. Time evolution of the magnetizations and cavity states, following small to medium nutation by a classical field, yields a microscopic quantum mechanical picture of radiation damping in magnetic resonance, and the formation of the free induction signal, that is, the transfer of Zeeman energy, via spin coherence, to ca…
The interaction between light and an atom proceeds via three paradigmatic mechanisms: spontaneous emission, stimulated emission, and absorption. All three are resonant processes in the sense that they require that the radiation field be resonant with the atomic transition. The non-resonant counterparts of these effects, while necessary to maintain locality of the interaction in principle, are usually negligible because their effects tend to average out over multiple cycles of the radiation field. This state of affairs does not hold if the atom is accelerated. We show that, when accelerated, th…
We present a multimode Hamiltonian formulation for the problem of opto-acoustic interactions in optical waveguides. We establish a Hamiltonian representation of the acoustic field and then introduce a full system with a simple opto-acoustic coupling that includes both photoelastic/electrostrictive and radiation pressure/moving boundary effects. The Heisenberg equations of motion are used to obtain coupled mode equations for quantized envelope operators for the optical and acoustic fields. We show that the coupling coefficients obtained coincide with those established earlier, but our formalism…
The temporal dynamics of stimulated emission is studied, with the particular emphasis on stimulated emission induced by x-ray pulses interacting with nuclei. In typical nuclear forward scattering experiments, the short incident x-ray pulse is accompanied by a huge number of off-resonant background photons. This prompts the question, if stimulated emission can be observed in the delayed nuclear scattering signal which is emitted after the incident pulse has passed. We find that the stimulated photons essentially overlap with the stimulating pulse. To overcome this problem, we identify the reduc…
We introduce a convenient set of analytical tools (the Gaussian formalism) and diagrams (symplectic circuits) to analyze multi-mode scattering events in analog gravity, such as pair-creation a lá Hawking by black hole and white hole analog event horizons. The diagrams prove to be valuable ansatzes for the scattering dynamics, especially in settings where direct analytic results are not straightforward and one must instead rely on numerical simulations. We use these tools to investigate entanglement generation in single- and multi-horizon scenarios, in particular when the Hawking process is sti…
Here we present a semiclassical analysis of spontaneous and stimulated radiative emission from unmodulated and optically-modulated electron quantum wavepackets. We show that the radiative emission/absorption and corresponding deceleration/acceleration of the wavepackets depend on the controllable 'history-dependent' wavepacket size. The characteristics of the radiative interaction when a wavepacket of size (duration) is short relative to the radiation wavelength, are close to the predictions of the classical point-particle modeling. On the other hand, in the long-sized wavepacket limit, the in…
In this paper we consider possible analogue Hawking radiation from a normal dielectric and metamaterial composite, having an analogue horizon where the dielectric parameters vanish and change sign upon crossing this transition zone. We follow a complex path analysis to show the presence of an analogue Hawking temperature at the horizon and subsequent photon production from the ambient electromagnetic field. Possibility of experimental observation is also commented upon.
We have obtained general expressions for the intensity of radiation and tangential force of a small polarizable particle in the process of translational-rotational motion in equilibrium radiation background (thermalized photon gas) of certain temperature at an arbitrary relative orientation of the linear and angular velocity vectors. It is shown that in cold vacuum background the translational velocity of particle is independent of time and the intensity of its spontaneous emission is determined by the angular velocity and imaginary part of the polarizability.
We report on the fabrication and characterization of a single-crystal diamond device for the electrical stimula- tion of light emission from nitrogen-vacancy (NV0) and other defect-related centers. Pairs of sub-superficial graphitic micro-electrodes embedded in insulating diamond were fabricated by a 6 MeV C3+ micro-beam irra- diation followed by thermal annealing. A photoluminescence (PL) characterization evidenced a low radiation damage concentration in the inter-electrode gap region, which did not significantly affect the PL features domi- nated by NV centers. The operation of the device in…
Coherent sources exploiting the stimulated emission of non-equilibrium quantum systems, i.e. gain media, have proven indispensable for advancing fundamental research and engineering. The operating electromagnetic bands of such coherent sources have been continuously enriched for increasing demands.Nevertheless, for a single bench top coherent source, simultaneous generation of radiation in multiple bands, especially when the bands are widely separated, present formidable challenges with a single gain medium. Here, we propose a mechanism of simultaneously realizing the stimulated emission of ra…
For the first time, based on the fluctuation-electromagnetic theory, we have calculated the drug force, the radiation heat flux and the frictional torque on a small rotating particle moving at a relativistic velocity through the equilibrium background radiation (photon gas). The particle and background radiation are characterized by different temperatures corresponding to the local thermodynamic equilibrium in their own reference frames.
