In this paper we consider possible analogue Hawking radiation from a normal dielectric and metamaterial composite, having an analogue horizon where the dielectric parameters vanish and change sign upon crossing this transition zone. We follow a complex path analysis to show the presence of an analogue Hawking temperature at the horizon and subsequent photon production from the ambient electromagnetic field. Possibility of experimental observation is also commented upon.
We regard the Parikh-Wilczek's tunnelling model of Hawking radiation as a quantum mechanical process of stimulated emission. The hypothesized microstates are found at the horizon with double degeneracy. A Jaynes-Cummings toy model for a black hole in the cavity is proposed to demonstrate how to write a qubit via the angular-dependent transition coupling, which might be related to the soft Goldstone hairs at analytic continuation. At last, we show how information is retained in the black hole by computing the time evolution of mutual entanglement entropy in the cavity-black holes system.
We model a sonic black hole analog in a quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate, using a Gross-Pitaevskii equation matching the configuration of a recent experiment by Steinhauer [Nat. Phys. 10, 864 (2014)]. The model agrees well with important features of the experimental observations, demonstrating their hydrodynamic nature. We find that a zero-frequency bow wave is generated at the inner (white hole) horizon, which grows in proportion to the square of the background condensate density. The relative motion of the black and white hole horizons produces a Doppler shift of the bow wave a…
We propose the use of a waveguide-like transmission line based on direct-current superconducting quantum interference devices (dc-SQUID) and study the sine-Gordon (SG) equation which characterises the dynamical behavior of the superconducting phase in this transmission line. Guided by the duality between black holes in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) dilaton gravity and solitons in sine-Gordon field theory, we show how to, in our setup, realize 1 + 1 dimensional black holes as solitons of the sine-Gordon equation. We also study the analogue Hawking radiation in terms of the quantum soliton evaporation,…
These notes introduce the fundamentals of black hole geometry, the thermality of the vacuum, and the Hawking effect, in spacetime and its analogues. Stimulated emission of Hawking radiation, the trans-Planckian question, short wavelength dispersion, and white hole radiation in the setting of analogue models are also discussed. No prior knowledge of differential geometry, general relativity, or quantum field theory in curved spacetime is assumed.
The constant curvature (CC) black holes are higher dimensional generalizations of BTZ black holes. It is known that these black holes have the unusual topology of ${\cal M}_{D-1}\times S^1$, where $D$ is the spacetime dimension and ${\cal M}_{D-1}$ stands for a conformal Minkowski spacetime in $D-1$ dimensions. The unusual topology and time-dependence for the exterior of these black holes cause some difficulties to derive their thermodynamic quantities. In this work, by using globally embedding approach, we obtain the Hawking temperature of the CC black holes. We find that the Hawking temperat…
Inspired by a recent experiment by Steinhauer and co-workers, we present a simple model which describes the formation of an acoustic black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate, allowing an analytical computation of the evolution in time of the corresponding density-density correlator. We show the emergence of analog Hawking radiation out of a "quantum atmosphere" region significantly displaced from the horizon. This is quantitatively studied both at $T=0$ and even in the presence of an initial temperature T, as is always the case experimentally.
Arising out of a Non-local non-relativistic BEC, we present an Analogue gravity model upto $\mathcal{O}(ξ^{2})$ accuracy in the presence of the quantum potential term for a canonical acoustic BH in $(3+1)$-d spacetime where the series solution of the free minimally coupled KG equation for the large length scale massive scalar modes is derived. We systematically address the issues of the presence of the quantum potential term being the root cause of a UV-IR coupling between short wavelength `primary' modes which are supposedly Hawking radiated through the sonic horizon and the large wavelength …
We discuss the possible role of quantum horizon fluctuations on black hole radiance, especially whether they can invalidate Hawking's analysis based upon transplanckian modes. We are particularly concerned with ``enhanced'' fluctuations produced by gravitons or matter fields in squeezed vacuum states sent into the black hole after the collapse process. This allows for the possibility of increasing the fluctuations well above the vacuum level. We find that these enhanced fluctuations could significantly alter stimulated emission but have little effect upon the spontaneous emission. Thus the the…
We study the properties of a $2+1$ dimensional Sonic black hole (SBH) that can be realised, in a quasi-two-dimensional two-component spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The corresponding equation for phase fluctuations in the total density mode that describes phonon field in the hydrodynamic approximation is described by a scalar field equation in $2+1$ dimension whose space-time metric is significantly different from that of the SBH realised from a single component BEC that was studied experimentally, and, theoretically meticulously in literature. Given the breakdown of the irr…
The Unruh effect is a surprising prediction of quantum field theory that asserts accelerating observers perceive a thermal spectrum of particles with a temperature proportional to their acceleration. However, it has recently been shown that particle detectors can click less often or even cool down as their acceleration increases, in contrast to the heating one would expect. This leads to the so called anti-Unruh phenomena. Here we consider detectors outside a BTZ black hole and demonstrate the existence of black hole analogues of these effects, which we dub anti-Hawking phenomena.
We show that the geometry of $4n$-dimensional quaternionic Kähler spaces with a locally free $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$-action admits a Gibbons-Hawking-like description based on the Galicki-Lawson notion of quaternionic Kähler moment map. This generalizes to higher dimensions a four-dimensional construction, due to Calderbank and Pedersen, of self-dual Einstein manifolds with two linearly independent commuting Killing vector fields. As an application, we use this new Ansatz to give an explicit equivariant completion of the twistor space construction of the local c-map proposed by Roček, Vafa and Vando…
We present an analytical formulation of the recent one-shot decoupling model of Bràdler and Adami [arXiv:1505.0284] and compute the resulting "Page Information" curves, for the reduced density matrices for the evaporating black hole internal degrees of freedom, and emitted Hawking radiation pairs entangled across the horizon. We argue that black hole evaporation/particle production has a very close analogy to the laboratory process of spontaneous parametric down conversion, when the pump is allowed to deplete.
We propose that extra dimensions might be detected with higher dimensional analogues of black holes. The usual 4-dimensional acoustic(sonic)black hole metric is extended to arbitrary dimensions. The absorption cross-section of Hawking radiation on the brane and in the bulk are calculated in the semiclassical approximation.
We propose a model with multiple qubits that reproduces the thermal properties of 4-dimensional (4-dim) Schwarzschild black holes (BHs) by simultaneously taking account of the emission of Hawking particles and the zero-energy soft hair evaporation at horizon. The results verify that the entanglement entropy between a qubit and other subsystems, including emitted radiation, is much larger than the BH entropy analogue of the qubit, as opposed to the Page curve prediction. Our result suggests that early Hawking radiation is entangled with soft hair, and that late Hawking radiation can be highly e…
We propose an experimental model using the Laval nozzle of a sonic analogue of the Hawking radiation. We observe a power spectrum of the out-going wave emitted from the vicinity a sonic horizon in place of a created particle number. Our treatment is based on classical theory, and it will make experiments to be easier. This experimental possibility is a great advantage of our model.
We consider the definition of the Boulware and Hartle-Hawking states for quantum fields on black hole space-times. The properties of these states on a Schwarzschild black hole have been understood for many years, but neither of these states has a direct analogue on a Kerr black hole. We show how superradiant modes play an important role in the definition of quantum states on Kerr. Superradiance is also present on static black hole space-times, in particular for a charged scalar field on a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We explore whether analogues of the Boulware and Hartle-Hawking states exis…
We study the Hawking radiation of the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black holes in the infrared modified Horava-Lifshitz gravity by applying the methods of covariant anomaly cancellation and effective action, as well as the approach of Damour-Ruffini-Sannan's. These black holes behave as the usual Schwarzschild ones of the general relativity when the radial distance is very large. We also extend the method of covariant anomaly cancellation to derive the Hawking temperature of the spherically symmetric, asymptotically AdS black holes that represent the analogues of the Schwarzschil…
We compute the analogue Hawking radiation for modes which posses a small wave vector perpendicular to the horizon. For low frequencies, the resulting mass term induces a total reflection. This generates an extra mode mixing that occurs in the supersonic region, which cancels out the infrared divergence of the near horizon spectrum. As a result, the amplitude of the undulation (0-frequency wave with macroscopic amplitude) emitted in white hole flows now saturates at the linear level, unlike what was recently found in the massless case. In addition, we point out that the mass introduces a new ty…
We propose a Gaussian scalar field theory in a curved 2D metric with an event horizon as the low-energy effective theory for a weakly confined, invariant Random Matrix ensemble (RME). The presence of an event horizon naturally generates a bath of Hawking radiation, which introduces a finite temperature in the model in a non-trivial way. A similar mapping with a gravitational analogue model has been constructed for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) pushed to flow at a velocity higher than its speed of sound, with Hawking radiation as sound waves propagating over the cold atoms. Our work suggests…
Acoustic analogues of black holes (dumb holes) are generated when a supersonic fluid flow entrains sound waves and forms a trapped region from which sound cannot escape. The surface of no return, the acoustic horizon, is qualitatively very similar to the event horizon of a general relativity black hole. In particular Hawking radiation (a thermal bath of phonons with temperature proportional to the ``surface gravity'') is expected to occur. In this note we consider quasi-one-dimensional supersonic flow of a Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) in a Laval nozzle (converging-diverging nozzle), with a …
We show that any soliton solution of an arbitrary two-dimensional integrable equation has the potential to eventually evaporate and emit the exact analogue of Hawking radiation from black holes. From the AKNS matrix formulation of integrability, we show that it is possible to associate a real spacetime metric tensor which defines a curved surface, perceived by the classical and quantum fluctuations propagating on the soliton. By defining proper scalar invariants of the associated Riemannian geometry, and introducing the conformal anomaly, we are able to determine the Hawking temperatures and e…
We compute the black hole radiation spectrum in the presence of high-frequency dispersion in a large set of situations. In all cases, the spectrum diverges like the inverse of the Killing frequency. When studying the low-frequency spectrum, we find only two regimes: an adiabatic one where the corrections with respect to the standard temperature are small, and an abrupt one regulated by dispersion, in which the near-horizon metric can be replaced by step functions. The transition from one regime to the other is governed by a single parameter which also governs the net redshift undergone by disp…
In the context of the interaction between the electromagnetic field and a dielectric dispersive lossless medium, we present a non-linear version of the relativistically covariant Hopfield model, which is suitable for the description of a dielectric Kerr perturbation propagating in a dielectric medium. The non-linearity is introduced in the Lagrangian through a self-interacting term proportional to the fourth power of the polarization field. We find an exact solution for the nonlinear equations describing a propagating perturbation in the dielectric medium. Furthermore the presence of an analog…
We explicitly describe the last stages of black hole evaporation in the context of string theory : the combined study of Quantum Field Theory (QFT) and String Theory (ST) in curved backgrounds allows us to go further in the understanding of quantum gravity effects. The string ``analogue model''(or thermo-dynamical approach) is a well suited framework for this purpose. The results also apply to another physically relevant case: de Sitter background. Semiclassical (QFT) and quantum gravity (String) phases or regimes are properly determined (back reaction effects included). The Hawking-Gibbons tem…
We discuss the behaviour of massive modes near a horizon based on a study of the dispersion relation and wave packet simulations of the Klein-Gordon equation. We point out an apparent paradox between two (in principle equivalent) pictures of black hole evaporation through Hawking radiation. In the picture in which the evaporation is due to the emission of positive-energy modes, one immediately obtains a threshold for the emission of massive particles. In the picture in which the evaporation is due to the absorption of negative-energy modes, such a threshold apparently does not exist. We resolv…
We study the semi-classical tunneling of scalar and fermion fields from the horizon of a Constant Curvature Black Hole, which is locally AdS and whose five-dimensional analogue is dual to ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills. In particular, we highlight the strong reliance of the tunneling method for Hawking radiation on near-horizon symmetries, a fact often hidden behind the algorithmic procedure with which the tunneling approach tends to be used. We ultimately calculate the emission rate of scalars and fermions, and hence the black hole's Hawking temperature.
Analogue gravity systems offer many insights into gravitational phenomena, both at the classical and at the semiclassical level. The existence of an underlying Minkowskian structure (or Galilean in the non-relativistic limit) in the laboratory has been argued to directly forbid the simulation of geometries with Closed Timelike Curves (CTCs) within analogue systems. We will show that this is not strictly the case. In principle, it is possible to simulate spacetimes with CTCs whenever this does not entail the presence of a chronological horizon separating regions with CTCs from regions that do n…
We show that the near horizon regime of a Kerr-Newman-$AdS$ (KN$AdS$) black hole, given by its two dimensional analogue $a la$ Robinson and Wilczek (2005 Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 011303), is asymptotically $AdS_2$ and dual to a one dimensional quantum conformal field theory (CFT). The s-wave contribution of the resulting CFT's energy-momentum-tensor together with the asymptotic symmetries, generate a centrally extended Virasoro algebra, whose central charge reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy via Cardy's Formula. Our derived central charge also agrees with the near extremal Kerr/CFT Correspon…
We propose a new analogue model of gravity - the evolving quark gluon plasma (QGP) produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. This quark gluon plasma is the "most inviscid" fluid known. Such low kinematic viscosity is believed to reflect strongly correlated nature for QGP in these experiments. Hence, it may provide a good example of a quantum fluid naturally suited to studies of acoustic Hawking radiation. Due to rapid longitudinal expansion, presence of a sonic horizon is also naturally guaranteed here, though, in general, this horizon is not static. Using Ultra relativistic quantum molec…
