We discuss the possible role of quantum horizon fluctuations on black hole radiance, especially whether they can invalidate Hawking's analysis based upon transplanckian modes. We are particularly concerned with ``enhanced'' fluctuations produced by gravitons or matter fields in squeezed vacuum states sent into the black hole after the collapse process. This allows for the possibility of increasing the fluctuations well above the vacuum level. We find that these enhanced fluctuations could significantly alter stimulated emission but have little effect upon the spontaneous emission. Thus the thermal character of the Hawking radiation is remarkably robust.
The quantum fluctuations of horizons in Robertson-Walker universes and in the Schwarzschild spacetime are discussed. The source of the metric fluctuations is taken to be quantum linear perturbations of the gravitational field. Lightcone fluctuations arise when the retarded Green's function for a massless field is averaged over these metric fluctuations. This averaging replaces the delta-function on the classical lightcone with a Gaussian function, the width of which is a measure of the scale of the lightcone fluctuations. Horizon fluctuations are taken to be measured in the frame of a geodesic…
We investigate non-equilibrium nature of fluctuations of black hole horizons by applying the fluctuation theorems and the Jarzynski equality developed in the non-equilibrium statistical physics. These theorems applied to space-times with black hole horizons lead to the generalized second law of thermodynamics. It is also suggested that the second law should be violated microscopically so as to satisfy the Jarzynski equality.
The appearance of a few unevenly- spaced bright flashes of light on top of Hawking radiation is the sign of the amplification effect in black hole horizon fluctuations. Previous studies on this problem suffer from the lack of considering all emitted photons in the theoretical spectroscopy of these fluctuations. In this paper, we include all of the physical transition weights and present a consistent intensity formula. This modifies a black hole radiation pattern.
We show that the horizon instability of the extremal Kerr black hole is associated with a singular branch point in the Green function at the superradiant bound frequency. We study generic initial data supported away from the horizon and find an enhanced growth rate due to nonaxisymmetric modes. The growth is controlled by the conformal weight of each mode. We speculate on connections to near-extremal black holes and holographic duality.
We consider an Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a massless Dirac field. Assuming that the detector is moving along an hyperbolic trajectory, we modeled the effects of fluctuations in the event horizon using a Dirac equation with random coefficients. First, we develop the perturbation theory for the fermionic field in a random media. Further we evaluate corrections due to the randomness in the response function associated to different model detectors.
The strong version of the nonviolent nonlocality proposal of Giddings predicts "strong but soft" quantum metric fluctuations near black hole horizons in an attempt to resolve the information paradox. To study observable signatures of this proposal, we numerically solve Einstein's equations modified by these fluctuations and analyze the gravitational wave signal from the inspiral and merger of two black holes. In a model of evolution for such fluctuations, we show that they lead to significant deviations in the observed waveform, even when the black holes are still well separated, and could pot…
We evoke situations where large fluctuations in the entropy are induced, our main example being a spacetime containing a potential black hole whose formation depends on the outcome of a quantum mechanical event. We argue that the teleological character of the event horizon implies that the consequent entropy fluctuations must be taken seriously in any interpretation of the quantal formalism. We then indicate how the entropy can be well defined despite the teleological character of the horizon, and we argue that this is possible only in the context of a spacetime or ``histories'' formulation of…
Loop quantum gravity admits a kind of area quantization that is characterized by three quantum numbers. We show the complete spectrum of area is the union of equidistant subsets and a universal reformulation with fewer parameters is possible. Associated with any area there is also another number that determines its degeneracy. One application is that a quantum horizon manifests harmonic modes in vacuum fluctuations. It is discussed the physical fluctuations of a space-time horizon should include all the excluded area eigenvalues, where quantum amplification effect occurs. Due to this effect th…
Einstein equations projected on to a black hole horizon gives rise to Navier-Stokes equations. Horizon-fluids typically possess unusual features like negative bulk viscosity and it is not clear whether a statistical mechanical description exists for such fluids. In this work, we provide an explicit derivation of the Bulk viscosity of the horizon-fluid based on the theory of fluctuations a la Kubo. The main advantage of our approach is that our analysis remains for the most part independent of the details of the underlying microscopic theory and hence the conclusions reached here are model inde…
In this note I introduce the notion of the ``reliability horizon'' for semi-classical quantum gravity. This reliability horizon is an attempt to quantify the extent to which we should trust semi-classical quantum gravity, and to get a better handle on just where the Planck regime resides. I point out that the key obstruction to pushing semi-classical quantum gravity into the Planck regime is often the existence of large metric fluctuations, rather than a large back-reaction. There are many situations where the metric fluctuations become large long before the back-reaction is significant. Issue…
Some of the most prominent theoretical predictions of modern times, e.g., the Unruh effect, Hawking radiation, and gravity-assisted particle creation, are supported by the fact that various quantum constructs like particle content and vacuum fluctuations of a quantum field are observer-dependent. Despite being fundamental in nature, these predictions have not yet been experimentally verified because one needs extremely strong gravity (or acceleration) to bring them within the existing experimental resolution. In this Letter, we demonstrate that a post-Newtonian rotating atom inside a far-detun…
Adopting the Landau-Lifshiftz method of classical fluctuations we determine the statistical average strength of the fluctuations of the energy flux on the apparent horizon of a homogeneous and isotropic universe described by Einstein gravity. We find that the fluctuations increase with the temperature of the horizon and decrease with its area, in accordance with the features of systems where gravity can be neglected. %is absent. We further find, on the one hand, that the fluctuations vanish in the cosmological constant dominated de Sitter expansion, and, on the other hand, that the domination …

By using the minisuperspace model for the interior metric ofstatic black holes, we solve the Wheeler-DeWitt equation to study quantum mechanics of the horizon geometry. Our basic idea is to introduce the gravitational mass and the expansions of null rays as quantum operators. Then, the exact wave function is found as a mass eigenstate, and the radius of the apparent horizon is quantum-mechanically defined. In the evolution of the metric variables, the wave function changes from a WKB solution giving the classical trajectories to a tunneling solution. By virtue of the quantum fluctuations of th…
Inhomogeneity of the actual value of the vacuum energy density is considered in a black hole background. We examine the back-reaction of a Schwarzschild black hole to the highly inhomogeneous vacuum density, and argue the fluctuations lead to deviations from general relativity in the near-horizon region. In particular, we found that vacuum fluctuations onto the horizon trigger adiabatic release of quantum information, while vacuum fluctuations in the vicinity of the horizon produce potentially observable metric fluctuations of order the Schwarzschild radius. Consequently, we propose a form of …
We will discuss selected physical effects of spacetime geometry fluctuations, especially the operational signatures of geometry fluctuations and their effects on black hole horizons. The operational signatures which we discuss involve the effects of the fluctuations on images, and include luminosity variations, spectral line broadening and angular blurring. Our main interest will be in black hole horizon fluctuations, especially horizon fluctuations which have been enhanced above the vacuum level by gravitons or matter in squeezed states. We investigate whether these fluctuations can alter the…
We study scalar field fluctuations of the inflaton field in an early inflationary universe on an effective 4D Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) metric, which is obtained after make a planar coordinate transformation on a 5D Ricci-flat Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) static metric. We obtain the important result that the spectrum of fluctuations at zeroth order is independent of the scalar field mass $M$ on Schwarzschild scales, while on cosmological scales it exhibits a mass dependence. However, in the first-order expansion, the spectrum depends of the inflaton mass and the amplitude is linear with …
We study several realistic configurations allowing to realize an acoustic horizon in the flow of a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. In each case we give an analytical description of the flow pattern, of the spectrum of Hawking radiation and of the associated quantum fluctuations. Our calculations confirm that the non local correlations of the density fluctuations previously studied in a simplified model provide a clear signature of Hawking radiation also in realistic configurations. In addition we explain by direct computation how this non local signal relates to short range modificat…
We consider a pointlike two-level system undergoing uniformly accelerated motion. We evaluate the transition probability for a finite time interval of this system coupled to a massless scalar field near a fluctuating event horizon. Horizon fluctuations are modeled using a random noise which generates light-cone fluctuations. We study the case of centered, stationary and Gaussian random processes. The transition probability of the system is obtained from the positive-frequency Wightman function calculated to one loop order in the noise averaging process. Our results show that the fluctuating ho…
Our Universe is expected to finally approach a de Sitter universe whose horizon is considered to be in thermal equilibrium. In the present article, both the energy stored on the horizon and its thermodynamic fluctuations are examined through the holographic equipartition law. First, it is confirmed that a flat Friedmann--Robertson--Walker universe approaches a de Sitter universe, using a cosmological model close to lambda cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) models. Then, based on the holographic equipartition law, the energy density of the Hubble volume is calculated from the energy on the Hubble horizo…
We attempt to calculate the point separated Noise Kernel for self similar Tolman Bondi metric, using a method similar to that developed by Eftekharzadeh et. al for ultra-static spacetimes referring to the work by Page. In case of formation of a naked singularity, the Noise Kernel thus obtained is found to be regular except on the Cauchy horizon, where it diverges. The behavior of the noise in case of the formation of a covered singularity is found to be regular. This result seemingly renders back reaction non-negligible which questions the stability of the results obtained from the semiclassic…
The definition of matter states on spacelike hypersurfaces of a 1+1 dimensional black hole spacetime is considered. The effect of small quantum fluctuations of the mass of the black hole due to the quantum nature of the infalling matter is taken into account. It is then shown that the usual approximation of treating the gravitational field as a classical background on which matter is quantized, breaks down near the black hole horizon. Specifically, on any hypersurface that captures both infalling matter near the horizon and Hawking radiation, quantum fluctuations in the background geometry bec…
A study of the high angular momentum particles 'atmosphere' near the Schwarzschild black hole horizon suggested that strong gravitational interactions occur at invariant distance of the order of $\sqrt[3]{M}$ (A. Casher et. al). We present a generalization of this result to the Kerr-Newman black hole case. It is shown that the larger charge and angular momentum black hole bears, the larger invariant distance at which strong gravitational interactions occur becomes. This invariant distance is of order $\sqrt[3]{r_+^2/\hh}.$ This implies, that the Planckian structure of the Hawking radiation of …
We show that any extreme black hole with an orthogonally transitive abelian isometry group has a near-horizon geometry with enhanced symmetry. We also point out a simple proof of the horizon topology theorem of Galloway and Schoen for degenerate horizons.
We point out that the non-gaussianity arising from cubic self interactions of the inflaton field is proportional to ξN_e where ξ~ V"' and N_e is the number of e-foldings from horizon exit till the end of inflation. For scales of interest N_e = 60, and for models of inflation such as new inflation, natural inflation and running mass inflation ξis large compared to the slow roll parameter ε~ V'^{2}. Therefore the contribution from self interactions should not be outrightly ignored while retaining other terms in the non-gaussianity parameter f_{NL}. But the N_e dependent term seems to imply the g…
We investigate the asymptotic supersymmetry group of the near horizon region of the BMPV black holes, which are the rotating BPS black holes in five dimensions. When considering only bosonic fluctuations, we show that there exist consistent boundary conditions and the corresponding asymptotic symmetry group is generated by a chiral Virasoro algebra with the vanishing central charge. After turning on fermionic fluctuations with the boundary conditions, we also show that the asymptotic supersymmetry group is generated by a chiral super-Virasoro algebra with the vanishing central extension. The s…
We calculate quantum fluctuations of a free scalar field in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time, adopting the planar coordinates that is pertinent to the presence of a black hole in an inflationary universe. In a perturbation approach, doing expansion in powers of a small black hole event horizon compared to the de Sitter cosmological horizon, we obtain time evolution of the quantum fluctuations and then derive the scalar power spectrum.
We study the stress energy two-point function to show how short distance correlations across the horizon transform into correlations among asymptotic states, for the Unruh effect, and for black hole radiation. In the first case the transition is caused by the coupling to accelerated systems. In the second, the transition is more elusive and due to the change of the geometry from the near horizon region to the asymptotic one. The gradual transition is appropriately described by using affine coordinates. We relate this to the covariant regularization used to evaluate the mean value of the stress…
In classical thermodynamics, irreversible processes are accomplished with an increase of entropy and a release of heat into the environment. In the case of black hole thermodynamics, instead, the increase of entropy is related with the absorption of energy from the outside of the black hole. Based on this analogy, the black hole is considered as a thermodynamic open system in the non-equilibrium regime during the absorption. Applying a novel result, we obtain a detailed balance relation for the macroscopic absorption of an astronomical object by an static spherically symmetric black hole. Beca…
For many years researchers have tried to glean hints about quantum gravity from black hole thermodynamics. However, black hole thermodynamics suffers from the problem of Universality --- at leading order, several approaches with different microscopic degrees of freedom lead to Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. We attempt to bypass this issue by using a minimal statistical mechanical model for the horizon fluid based on Damour-Navier-Stokes (DNS) equation. For stationary asymptotically flat black hole spacetimes in General Relativity, we show explicitly that at equilibrium the entropy of the horizon …
Motivated by recent work suggesting observably large spacetime fluctuations in the causal development of an empty region of flat space, we conjecture that these metric fluctuations can be quantitatively described in terms of a conformal field theory of near-horizon vacuum states. One consequence of this conjecture is that fluctuations in the modular Hamiltonian $ΔK$ of a causal diamond are equal to the entanglement entropy: $\langle ΔK^2 \rangle = \langle K \rangle = \frac{A(Σ_{d-2})}{4 G_d}$, where $A(Σ_{d-2})$ is the area of the entangling surface in $d$ dimensions. Our conjecture applies to…
We introduce the notion of fluid approximation of a quantum spherical black hole in the context of Loop Quantum Gravity. In this limit, the microstates of the black hole are intertwiners between "large" representations $s_i$ which typically scale as $s_i \sim \sqrt{a_H}$ where $a_H$ denotes the area of the horizon in Planck units. The punctures with large colors are, for the black hole horizon, similar to what are the fluid parcels for a classical fluid. We dub them puncels. Hence, in the fluid limit, the horizon is composed by puncels which are themselves interpreted as composed (in the sense…
This paper delineates the first steps in a systematic quantitative study of the spacetime fluctuations induced by quantum fields in an evaporating black hole under the stochastic gravity program. The central object of interest is the noise kernel, which is the symmetrized two-point quantum correlation function of the stress tensor operator. As a concrete example we apply it to the study of the spherically-symmetric sector of metric perturbations around an evaporating black hole background geometry. For macroscopic black holes we find that those fluctuations grow and eventually become important…
We have already derived the Criteria for thermal stability of charged rotating black holes in any dimension , for horizon areas that are large relative to the Planck area (in these dimensions). The derivation is done by using results of loop quantum gravity and equilibrium statistical mechanics of the Grand Canonical ensemble. It is also shown there [1] that in four dimensional spacetime, ADS Kerr-Newman Black hole is thermally stable. In this paper, the expectation values of fluctuations of horizon area, charge and angular momentum of stable ADS black hole are calculated. Interestingly, it is …
Evaluating a functional integral exactly over a subset of metrics that represent the quantum fluctuations of the horizon of a black hole, we obtain a Schroedinger equation in null coordinate time for the key component of the metric. The equation yields a current that preserves probability if we use the most natural choice of functional measure. This establishes the existence of blurred horizons and a thermal atmosphere. It has been argued previously that the existence of a thermal atmosphere is a direct concomitant of the thermal radiation of black holes when the temperature of the hole is gre…
Finite width of the analog event horizon is determined by the nonlinearity length in the Kerr nonlinear optical system, which is discussed here, or by the healing length in Bose-Einstein condensates. The various eigen modes of fluctuations are found in the immediate vicinity of the event horizon and the scattering matrix due to the finite width horizon is calculated to within the leading order correction in the nonlinearity length. The Hawking radiation is found to be that of a grey body with the emissivity larger than one. A procedure of paraxial quantization of the fluctuation field is discu…
We have already derived the Criteria for thermal stability of charged rotating quantum black holes, for horizon areas that are large relative to the Planck area. The derivation is done by using results of loop quantum gravity and equilibrium statistical mechanics of the Grand Canonical ensemble. It is also shown that in four dimensional spacetime, quantum ADS Kerr-Newman Black hole is thermally stable within certain range of its' parameters. In this paper, the expectation values of fluctuations and correlations among horizon area, charge and angular momentum of stable quantum ADS black hole ar…
We study quantum fluctuations in the lightcone metric of the 4-d Einstein-Hilbert action via dimensional reduction to Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. In particular, we show that, in Einstein gravity, the causal development of a region in flat Minkowski spacetime, near a horizon defined by light sheets, can be described by an effective two-dimensional dilaton theory. This enables us to make use of known solutions of the JT action, where the spacetime position of a horizon has quantum uncertainty due to metric fluctuations. This quantum uncertainty can be then directly related to the original 4-…
Tensor and scalar unparticle couplings to matter have been shown to enhance gravitational interactions and provide corrections to the Schwarzschild metric and associated black hole structure. We derive an exact solution to the Einstein equations for vector unparticles, and conclusively demonstrate that these induce Riessner-Nordström (RN)-like solutions where the role of the "charge" is defined by a composite of unparticle phase space parameters. These black holes admit double-horizon structure, although unlike the RN metric these solutions have a minimum inner horizon value. In the extremal l…
We show that long-time, long-distance fluctuations of plane-symmetric horizons exhibit universal hydrodynamic behavior. By considering classical fluctuations around black-brane backgrounds, we find both diffusive and shear modes. The diffusion constant and the shear viscosity are given by simple formulas, in terms of metric components. For a given metric, the answers can be interpreted as corresponding kinetic coefficients in the holographically dual theory. For the near-extremal Dp, M2 and M5 branes, the computed kinetic coefficients coincide with the results of independent AdS/CFT calculatio…
We obtain point separated Noise Kernel for the Reissner Nordström metric. The Noise Kernel defines the fluctuations of the quantum stress tensor and is of central importance to Semiclassical Stochastic Gravity. The metric is modeled as gravitationally collapsing spacetime, by using suitable coordinate transformations, defined earlier. The fluctuations of the quantum stress tensor, at the final stage of collapse are then analysed for both, the naked singularity and black hole end states. The behavior of this Noise Kernel, at the Cauchy Horizon for naked singularity shows markedly different behavi…
We introduce, by means of the Brans-Dicke scalar field, space-time fluctuations at scale comparable to Planck length near the event horizon of a black hole and examine their dramatic effects.
The effects of thermal fluctuations of the mass (horizon area) and electric charge, on the entropy of non-rotating charged {\it macroscopic} black holes, are analyzed using a grand canonical ensemble. Restricting to Gaussian fluctuations around equilibrium, and assuming a power law type of relation between the black hole mass, charge and horizon area, characterized by two real positive indices, the grand canonical entropy is shown to acquire a logarithmic correction with a positive coefficient proportional to the sum of the indices. However, the root mean squared fluctuations of mass and charg…
This paper delineates the first steps in a systematic quantitative study of the spacetime fluctuations induced by quantum fields in an evaporating black hole. We explain how the stochastic gravity formalism can be a useful tool for that purpose within a low-energy effective field theory approach to quantum gravity. As an explicit example we apply it to the study of the spherically-symmetric sector of metric perturbations around an evaporating black hole background geometry. For macroscopic black holes we find that those fluctuations grow and eventually become important when considering suffici…
