In this paper we present a review of bosonic renormalization effects on electronic carriers observed from angle-resolved photoemission spectra in the cuprates. We specifically discuss the viewpoint that these renormalizations represent coupling of the electrons to the lattice, and review how the wide range of materials dependence, such as the number of CuO$_2$ layers, and the doping dependence can be straightforwardly understood as arising due to novel electron-phonon coupling.
We study the spontaneous gap generation for gapless nodal fermions within an effective gauge field theory of high temperature superconductors. When superconductivity appears, the gauge boson acquires a finite mass via Anderson-Higgs mechanism. Spontaneous nodal gap generation takes place if the gauge boson mass $ξ$ is zero or less than a critical value $ξ_{c}$ but is suppressed by a larger gauge boson mass. The generated nodal gap prohibits the appearance of low-energy fermion excitations and leads to antiferromagnetic order. Using the fact that gauge boson mass $ξ$ is proportional to superflu…
Recent experimental findings show that the pairing interaction in hole-doped cuprates resides in the nodal (FS arcs) region accompanied by the separate antinodal pseudogap. A corresponding multiband model of cuprate superconductivity is developed. It is based on the electronic spectrum evolving with doping and extends authors earlier approaches. The leading pair-transfer interaction is supposed between the itinerant (mainly oxygen) band and a nodal defect (polaron) band created by doping. These components are overlapping. The defect subband created in the antinodal region of the momentum space…
Nodal quasiparticles of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 have been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with high momentum and energy resolution. Low-energy tunable photons have enabled us to resolve a small nodal bilayer splitting, unmasking the intrinsic single-particle scattering rate. The nodal scattering rate is abruptly suppressed upon the superconducting transition, and shows a linear energy dependence at low energies, indicating the nontrivial effect of elastic scatterings on the quasiparticles. With increasing energy, the antibonding-band scattering rate becomes higher than the bonding o…
Although more than twenty years have passed since the discovery of high temperature cuprate superconductivity, the identification of the superconducting order parameter is still under debate. Here, we show that the nodal gap component is the best candidate for the superconducting order parameter. It scales with the critical temperature $T_c$ over a wide doping range and displays a significant temperature dependence below $T_c$ in both the underdoped and the overdoped regimes of the phase diagram. In contrast, the antinodal gap component does not scale with $T_c$ in the underdoped side and appe…
Recent angle-resolved photoemission electron spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments demonstrate that the momentum dependence of the spectral gap in underdoped cuprates does not follow a pure $d$-wave form [H. Anzai et a., Nat. Comm. {\bf 4}, 1815 (2013)]. This deviation is highly controversial. It has often been interpretated as a proof of the non-superconducting origin of the antinodal gap in the underdoped regime. In this article, we show that the measured angular dependence of the spectral gap can be explained by the basic nature of pairs in high-T$_c$ cuprates. Hole pairs, or {\it pairons}, form…
Using a precursor superconductivity scenario for the cuprates we present a theory for the temperature dependent behavior of the spectral gaps associated with four distinct spectroscopies: angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), differential conductance $dI/dV$, quasi-particle interference spectroscopy, and the autocorrelated ARPES pattern. We find good agreement for a range of existing experiments and make predictions for others. Our theory, which incorporates the necessary (observed) contrast between the nodal and anti-nodal response, shows how different nodal gap shapes are associated with the…
Using a doping-determined multiband model spectrum of a "typical'' cuprate the effective mass of the paired carriers is calculated on the whole doping scale. Large $m_{ab}$ values quench rapidly with leaving the very underdoped region. Further slower diminishing of $m_{ab}$ reproduces the trend towards restoring the Fermi-liquid behaviour in cuprates with progressive doping. The interband superconducting condensate density ($n_s$) shows similar behaviour to the transition temperature and superconducting gaps. The $n_s(0)/m_{ab}$ ratio has an expressed maximum close to optimal doping as also th…
The highest superconducting transition temperatures in the cuprates are achieved in bilayer and trilayer systems, highlighting the importance of intralayer interactions for high Tc. It has been argued that interlayer hybridization vanishes along the nodal directions by way of a specific pattern of orbital overlap. Recent quantum oscillation measurements in bilayer cuprates have provided evidence for a residual bilayer-splitting at the nodes that is sufficiently small to enable magnetic breakdown tunneling at the nodes. Here we show that several key features of the experimental data can be unde…
Within the framework of the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the doping dependence of the electromagnetic response in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors is studied. It is shown that although there is an electron-hole asymmetry in the phase diagram, the electromagnetic response in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors is similar to that observed in the hole-doped cuprate superconductors. The superfluid density depends linearly on temperature, except for the strong deviation from the linear characteristics at the extremely low temperatures.
We study a simple BCS-like model which describes unconventional superconductivity on the basis of an electron-electron attraction corresponding to the delta-shell potential: $U(r) = -g δ(r-r_0)$. It predicts a $T_c$ vs. doping behavior similar to that characteristic of the High-$T_c$ cuprates.
Recent angle resolved photoemission spectrascope (ARPES) experiments on strongly underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ cuprates have reported an unusual gap in the nodal direction. Transport experiments on these cuprates found variable range hopping behavior observed. These cuprates have both electron and hole doping which has led to proposals that this cuprate is analogous to a partially compensated semiconductors. The nodal gap then corresponds to the Efros-Schklovskii(ES) gap in such semiconductors. We calculate the doping dependence and temperature dependence of a ES gap model and f…
Measurements of thermal conductivity ($κ$) versus temperature and doping for several cuprate superconductors are discussed. Suppressed values of the normal-state $κ$ and the slope change in $κ$ at $T_c$, observed near 1/8 doping in both YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ and Hg cuprates, are attributed to local lattice distortions and the suppression of the superconducting condensate, respectively. Both phenomena are proposed to arise from small domains of localized planar holes, presumably a manifestation of phase separation. It is suggested that the phase behavior of $κ$ reflects stripe dynamics and the…
The doping and temperature dependence of the thermodynamic properties in cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. By considering the interplay between the superconducting gap and normal-state pseudogap, the some main features of the doping and temperature dependence of the specific-heat, the condensation energy, and the upper critical field are well reproduced. In particular, it is shown that in analogy to the domelike shape of the doping dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, the maximal upper critical field occurs aro…
We formulate a model describing the doping ($x$) and temperature ($T$) dependence of the $ab$-plane and c-axis penetration depth of a cuprate superconductor. The model incorporates the suppression of the superfluid density with underdoping as the system approaches the Mott-Hubbard insulating state by augmenting a d-wave BCS model with a phenomenological charge renormalization factor that is vanishingly small for states away from the nodes of the d-wave pair potential but close to unity in the vicinity of the nodes. The c-axis penetration depth is captured within a model of incoherent electron …
We investigate the doping dependent low energy, low temperature ($T$ = 5 K) properties of nodal quasiparticles in the d-wave superconductor Bi$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212). By utilizing ultrahigh resolution laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we obtain precise band dispersions near $E_{F}$, mean free paths and scattering rates ($Γ$) of quasiparticles. For optimally and overdoped, we obtain very sharp quasiparticle peaks of 8 meV and 6 meV full-width at half-maximum, respectively, in accord with terahertz conductivity. For all doping levels, we find the energ…
Recent transport experiments in the cuprate superconductors linked the opening of the pseudogap to a change in electronic dispersion [S. Badoux et al., Nature 531, 210 (2015)]. Transport measurements showed that the carrier density sharply changes from $x$ to $1+x$ at the pseudogap critical doping, in accordance with the change from Fermi arcs at low doping to a large hole Fermi surface at high doping. The SU(2) theory of cuprates shows that antiferromagnetic short range interactions cause the arising of both charge and superconducting orders, which are related by an SU(2) symmetry. The fluctu…
We apply a recently-developed low-field technique to inductively measure the critical pair momentum $p_c$ in thin, underdoped films of Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ and Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ reflecting a wide range of hole doping. We observe that $p_c \propto \hbar/ξ$ scales with $T_c$ and therefore superfluid density $n_s(T\rightarrow0)$ in our two-dimensional cuprate films. This relationship was famously predicted by a universal model of the cuprates with a \textit{doping-independent} superconducting gap, but has not been observed by high field measurements of the …
A long-standing puzzle is why there is a difference between the optimal doping δ_{optimal}=0.15 for the maximal superconducting (SC) transition temperature Tc and the critical doping δ_{critical}=0.19 for the highest superfluid density ρ_s in cuprate superconductors? This puzzle is calling for an explanation. Within the kinetic energy driven SC mechanism, it is shown that except the quasiparticle coherence, ρ_s is dominated by the bare pair gap, while Tc is set by the effective pair gap. By calculation of the ratio of the effective and the bare pair gaps, it is shown that the coupling strength…
We show that the d-wave ordering in particle-hole channels, dubbed d-wave checkerboard order, possesses important physics that can sufficiently explain the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results in cuprates. A weak d-wave checkerboard order can effectively suppress the coherence peak in the single-particle spectrum while leaving the spectrum along the nodal direction almost unaffected. Simultaneously, it generates a Fermi arc with little dispersion around the nodal points at finite temperature that is consistent with the results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experim…
High-temperature superconducting cuprates exhibit an intriguing phenomenology for the low-energy elementary excitations. In particular, an unconventional temperature dependence of the coherent spectral weight (CSW) has been observed in the superconducting phase by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), both at the antinode where the d-wave paring gap is maximum, as well as along the gapless nodal direction. Here, we combine equilibrium and time-resolved ARPES to track the temperature dependent meltdown of the nodal CSW in Bi-based cuprates with unprecedented sensitivity. We find th…
Understanding the normal state transport properties in hole-doped high-temperature cuprate superconductors (HTCSs) is a challenging task which has been widely believed to be one of the key steps toward revealing the pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. Here, we present a true intrinsic and universal doping dependence of in-plane dc conductivity for all underdoped HTCSs. The doping dependence of in-plane dc conductivity normalized to that at optimal doping can be represented by a simple exponential formula. The doping behavior of the square of the nodal Fermi velocity derive…
A variational theory is proposed for the quasiparticle excitation in high T$_{c}$ cuprates. The theory goes beyond the usual Gutzwiller projected mean field state description by including the spin-charge recombination effect in the RVB background. The spin-charge recombination effect is found to qualitatively alter the behavior of the quasiparticle charge as a function of doping and cause considerable anisotropy in quasiparticle weight on the Fermi surface.
The free energy expansion of a two-band pair-transfer superconductor is developed. A critical in temperature and a noncritical coherence length appear. The effective in-plane $ξ_{ab}$, $H_{c2}\sp c\sim ξ_{ab}\sp{-2}$ and the thermodynamic critical magnetic field ($H_{c0}$) on the whole hole doping ($p$) scale are calculated for a "typical'' cuprate. A doping-prepared bare spectrum with normal state gaps quenched by doping has been used. The coherence length $ξ_{ab}$ falls with $p$ first rapidly. A moderate enhancement starts when the "cold'' defect band overlap with the valence band is reached…
High resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Bi2Sr2CuO6+d superconductor covering a wide doping range from heavily underdoped to heavily overdoped samples. Two obvious energy scales are identified in the nodal dispersions: one is the well-known 50-80 meV high energy kink and the other is <10 meV low energy kink. The high energy kink increases monotonously in its energy scale with increasing doping and shows weak temperature dependence, while the low energy kink exhibits a non-monotonic doping dependence with its coupling strength enhanced sharp…
We present a theory for the onset of spin density wave order in the superconducting ground state of the cuprates. We compute the scaling dimensions of allowed perturbations of a `relativistic' fixed point with O(4)xO(3) symmetry, including those associated with the fermionic nodal Bogoliubov quasiparticles. Analyses of up to six loops show that all perturbations with square lattice symmetry are likely irrelevant. We demonstrate that the fermion spectral functions are primarily damped by the coupling to fluctuations of a composite field with Ising nematic order. We also discuss the influence of…
Unlike the hole-doped cuprates, both nodal and nodeless superconductivity (SC) are observed in the electron-doped cuprates. To understand these two types of SC states, we propose a unified theory by considering the two-dimensional t-J model in proximity to an antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordering state. Within the slave-boson mean-field approximation, the d-wave pairing symmetry is still the most energetically favorable even in the presence of the external AF field. In the nodal phase, it is found that the nodes carry vorticity and are protected by the adjoint symmetry of time-reversal an…
The in-plane magnetic penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured down to 0.4 K in single crystals of electron-doped superconductors, Pr$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (PCCO) and Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (NCCO). In PCCO, the superfluid density varies as $T^2$ from 0.025 up to roughly 0.3 $T/T_c$ suggestive of a d-wave state with impurities. In NCCO, $λ(T)$ shows a pronounced upturn for $T < 4$ K due to the paramagnetic contribution of Nd$^{3+}$ ions. Fits to an s-wave order parameter over the standard BCS range ($T/T_c$ = 0.32) limit any gap to less than $Δ_{min} (0)/T_c = 0.57$ in NCCO. …
We explain recently observed linear temperature dependence of the nodal Fermi velocity $v_F (T)$ in near-optimally doped cuprates. We argue that it originates from electron-electron interaction, and is a fundamental property of an arbitrary 2D Fermi liquid. We consider a spin-fermion model with the same parameters as in earlier studies, and show that the T term is about 30% at 300K, in agreement with the data. We show that the sub-leading term in $v_F (T)$ is a regular (and small) $T^2$ correction. We also show that at a $2k_F$ quantum-critical point, temperature corrections to the dispersion …
Basic experimental facts related to ARPES, tunnelling, optics ad neutron scattering measurements are discussed. They give evidence for the relevance of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in pairing mechanism of HTSC cuprates. A controllable theory for strong correlations and their effects on EPI is discussed which is based on the 1/N expansion method in the t-J model. Strong correlations renormalize EPI and other charge-fluctuation properties (by including nonmagnetic impurity scattering) and the forward scattering peak (FSP) appears in the effective interactions. Pronounced FSP in EPI of H…
Motivated by recent tunnelling and Andreev-reflection experiments, we study the conditions for a quantum transition within the superconducting phase of the cuprates,in which a bulk imaginary (time-reversal breaking) $id_{xy}$component appears in addition to the $d_{x^2 - y^2}$ order parameter. We examine in detail the role of some important physical features of the cuprates. In particular we show that a closed Fermi surface,a bilayer splitting, an orthorhombic distortion, and the proximity to a quantum critical point around optimal doping favor the appearance of the imaginary component. These fi…
We study the systematic doping evolution of nodal dispersions by in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the continuously doped surface of a high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$. We reveal that the nodal dispersion has three segments separated by two kinks, located at ~10 meV and roughly 70 meV, respectively. The three segments have different band velocities and different doping dependence. In particular, the velocity of the high-energy segment increases monotonically as the doping level decreases and can even surpass the bare band velocity. We propose tha…
Motivated by recent work on strain-induced pseudo-magnetic fields in Dirac and Weyl semimetals, we analyze the possibility of analogous fields in two-dimensional nodal superconductors. We consider the prototypical case of a d-wave superconductor, a representative of the cuprate family, and find that the presence of weak strain leads to pseudo-magnetic fields and Landau quantization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in the low-energy sector. A similar effect is induced by the presence of generic, weak doping gradients. In contrast to genuine magnetic fields in superconductors, the strain- and doping…
A simple model to describe the energetic phase diagram of electron-doped cuprate superconductor is developed. Interband pairing operates between the UHB and the defect states created by doping and supplied by both extincting HB-s. Two defect subbands correspond to the ($π, 0$) and ($π/2,π/2$) momentum regions. Extended doping quenches the bare normal state gaps (pseudogaps). Maximal transition temperature corresponds to overlapping bands ensemble intersected by the chemical potential. Illustrative results for $T_c$, pseudo- and superconducting gaps are calculated on the whole doping scale. Maj…
We report on the detailed analysis of the infrared (IR) conductivity of two prototypical high-$T_{c}$ systems YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$%_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ throughout the complex phase diagram of these compounds. Our focus in this work is to thoroughly document the electromagnetic response of the nodal metal state which is initiated with only few holes doped in parent antiferromagnetic systems and extends up to the pseudogap boundary in the phase diagram. The key signature of the nodal metal is the two-component conductivity: the Drude mode at low energies followed by a resonance i…
The doping dependence of the superconducting condensate density, n_{s}^{o}, has been studied by muon-spin-rotation for Y_{0.8}Ca_{0.2}Ba_{2}(Cu_{1-z}Zn_{z})_{3}O_{7-δ} and Tl_{0.5-y}Pb_{0.5+y}Sr_{2}Ca_{1-x}Y_{x}Cu_{2}O_{7}. We find that n_{s}^{o} exhibits a pronounced peak at a unique doping state in the slightly overdoped regime. Its position coincides with the critical doping state where the normal state pseudogap first appears depleting the electronic density of states. A surprising correlation between n_{s}^{o} and the condensation energy U_{o} is observed which suggests unconventional beh…
Studying the nodal quasiparticles in superconducting cuprates by photoemission with highly improved momentum resolution, we show that a new "kink" feature in the scattering rate is a key to uncover the nature of electron correlations in these compounds. Our data provide evidence that the main doping independent contribution to the scattering can be well understood in terms of the conventional Fermi liquid model, while the additional doping dependent contribution has a magnetic origin. This sheds doubt on applicability of a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism to high temperature superconductors.
Hole doping into a correlated antiferromagnet leads to topological stripe correlations, involving charge stripes that separate antiferromagnetic spin stripes of opposite phase. Topological spin stripe order causes the spin degrees of freedom within the charge stripes to feel a geometric frustration with their environment. In the case of cuprates, where the charge stripes have the character of a hole-doped two-leg spin ladder, with corresponding pairing correlations. Anti-phase Josephson coupling across the spin stripes can lead to pair-density-wave order, in which broken translation symmetry o…
How does Fermi surface develop in cuprates upon doping of a parent Mott insulator, does it consist of large barrels or small pockets, which of them is responsible for superconductivity and what is a role of the pseudogap? Those are actively debated questions, important for understanding of high temperature superconductivity. Here we analyze doping dependence of interlayer tunneling in cuprates. We observe that with decreasing doping the supercurrent is rapidly decreasing, but the quasiparticle resistance at high bias remains almost unchanged. This indicates that Cooper pair and quasiparticle c…
We have previously shown that most of the anomalies in the superconducting characteristics of cuprates and ferropnictides observed at dopant concentrations within the superconducting dome, as well as the position of the domes in the phase diagrams, do not require knowledge of the details of their electronic structure for explanation, but can be understood and calculated with high accuracy within the framework of a simple model describing the cluster structure of the superconducting phase. This fact suggests a change in the paradigm that forms our understanding of HTSC. In this paper, we propos…
The pseudogap (PG) excitations in the framework of multiband superconductivity are analysed. Calculations for the doping phase diagram of electron-doped cuprate superconductors have been made. A nonrigid multiband model has been used. The interband pairing acts between the upper Hubbard band (UHB) and midgap states created (and shifted upwards) by doping. The appearance of two PG and two phase diagram critical points (CP) is suggested. The larger antinodal PG reflects the destruction of the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order. The second, smaller PG is a near-nodal event with exposed dopin…
The low-energy quasiparticle excitations in hole- and electron-type cuprate superconductors are investigated via both experimental and theoretical means. It is found that the doping and momentum dependence of the empirical low-energy quasiparticle excitations is consistent with a scenario of coexisting competing orders and superconductivity in the ground state of the cuprates. This finding, based on zero-field quasiparticle spectra, is further corrobarated by the patially resolved vortex-state scanning tunneling spectroscopy, which reveals pseudogap-like features consistent with a remaining co…
In the cuprate superconductor $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$, hole doping in the $CuO_2$ layers is controlled by both oxygen content and the degree of oxygen-ordering. At the composition $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.35}$, the ordering can occur at room temperature, thereby tuning the hole doping so that the superconducting critical temperature gradually rises from zero to 20 K. Here we exploit this to study the c-axis penetration depth as a function of temperature and doping. The temperature dependence shows the d-wave superconductor surviving to very low doping, with no sign of another ordered phase interfering wi…
Motivated by the recent experiments reporting the doping dependence of the short-range charge order (CO) in electron-doped cuprates, we study the resonant x-ray scattering spectrum from d-wave bond-charge fluctuations obtained in the two-dimensional t-J model. We find that (i) the CO is short-range, (ii) the CO peak is pronounced at low temperature, (iii) the peak intensity increases with decreasing carrier doping $δ$ down to $δ\approx$ 0.10 and is substantially suppressed below $δ\approx$ 0.10 due to strong damping, and (iv) the momentum of the CO decreases monotonically down to $δ\approx$ 0.…
A self-doping effect between outer and inner CuO$_2$ planes (OPs and IPs) in multi-layer cuprate superconductors is studied. When one considers a three-layer tight-binding model of the Hg-based three-layer cuprate derived from the first principle calculations, the electron concentration gets to be large in the OP compared to IP. This is inconsistent with the experimental fact that more hole carriers tend to be introduced into the OP than IP.We investigate a three-layer Hubbard model with the two-particle self-consistent approach for multi-layer systems to incorporate electron correlations. We …
Eliashberg theory generalized for the account of the electron-hole nonequivalence and electron correlations in the vertex function is used. The phonon contribution to the nodal electron Green function in cuprates is viewed. At non- zero temperatures the singularities (kinks) in the frequency behavior of a real and imaginary part of an electron nodal Green function, and also in the nodal part of the density of the electron states modified by an electron-phonon interaction are studied. It is shown that near the optimal doping both the low-energy and high-energy nodal Green function kinks and als…
We report on laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4-d). The data show the existence of a nodal hole-pocket Fermi-surface both in the normal and superconducting states. We prove that its origin is long-range antiferromagnetism by an analysis of the coherence factors in the main and folded bands. This coexistence of long-range antiferromagnetism and superconductivity implies that electron-doped cuprates are two-Fermi-surface superconductors. The measured superconducting gap in the nodal hole-pocket is compatible with a …
The three-band Emery model is applied to study the selected principal features of the $d$-$wave$ superconducting phase in the copper-based compounds. The electron-electron correlations are taken into account by the use of the diagrammatic expansion of the Guztwiller wave function (DE-GWF) method. The nodal Fermi velocity, Fermi momentum and effective mass are all determined in the paired state and show relatively good agreement with the available experimental data, as well as with the corresponding single-band calculations. Additionally, the influence of the next-nearest neighbor oxygen-oxygen…
We establish the topology of the spin-singlet superconducting states in the bare hyperhoneycomb lattice and derive analytically the full phase diagram using only symmetry and topology in combination with simple energy arguments. The phase diagram is dominated by two states preserving time-reversal symmetry. We find that the line-nodal state dominating at low doping levels is topologically nontrivial and exhibits surface Majorana flat bands, which we show perfectly match the bulk-boundary correspondence using Berry phase approach. At higher doping levels we find a fully gapped state with trivia…
Recent ARPES measurements on the electron-doped cuprate Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 can be interpreted in a mean field model of uniform doping of an antiferromagnet, with the Mott gap closing near optimal doping. Mode coupling calculations confirm the mean field results, while clarifying the relation between the Mott gap and short-range magnetic order. The same calculations find that hole doped cuprates should follow a strikingly different doping dependence, involving instability toward spiral phases or stripes. Nevertheless, the magnetic order (now associated with stripes) again collapses near optimal …
A simple model of cuprate superconductivity with an electron spectrum prepared by doping is developed. The pair-transfer interaction couples the itinerant band with two components ("hot'' and "cold'') of the defect subsystem. There are basic defect-itinerant gaps quenched by progressive doping. Band overlaps appear as novel sources for critical doping concentrations. Insulator to metal transitions in the normal state are expected here. Minimal quasiparticle excitation energies determine the pseudo- and superconducting gaps according to the doping-dependent disposition of bands. Two pseudogaps …
Superconductivity in copper oxides emerges on doping holes or electrons into their Mott insulating parent compounds. The spin excitations are thought to be the mediating glue for the pairing in superconductivity. Here the momentum and doping dependence of the dynamical spin response in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic-energy-driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the dispersion of the low-energy spin excitations changes strongly upon electron doping, however, the hour-glass-shaped dispersion of the low-energy spin excitations appeared in th…
Identifying quantum critical points (QCPs) and their associated fluctuations may hold the key to unraveling the unusual electronic phenomena observed in cuprate superconductors. Recently, signatures of quantum fluctuations associated with charge order (CO) have been inferred from the anomalous enhancement of CO excitations that accompany the reduction of the CO order parameter in the superconducting state. To gain more insight about the interplay between CO and superconductivity, here we investigate the doping dependence of this phenomenon throughout the Bi-2212 cuprate phase diagram using res…
We analyze doping dependent spectral intensities and Fermi surface maps obtained recently in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ (NCCO) via high resolution ARPES measurements, and show that the behavior of this electron-doped compound can be understood as the closing of a Mott (pseudo) gap, leading to a quantum critical point just above optimal doping. The doping dependence of the effective Hubbard $U$ adduced by comparing theoretical and experimental spectra is in resonable accord with various estimates and a simple screening calculation.
We present an exact diagonalization study of the single particle spectral function in the so-called t-t'-t''-J model in 2D. As a key result, we find that unlike the `pure' t-J model, hole doping leads to a major reconstruction of the quasiparticle band structure near (pi,0): whereas for the undoped system the quasiparticle states near (pi,0) are deep below the top of the band at (pi/2,pi/2), hole doping shifts these states up to E_F, resulting in extended flat band regions close to E_F and around (pi,0). This strong doping-induced deformation can be directly compared to angle resolved photoemi…
We investigate whether the spin or charge degrees of freedom are responsible for the nodal gap in underdoped cuprates by performing inelastic neutron scattering and x-ray diffraction measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, which is on the edge of the antiferromagnetic phase. We found that fluctuating incommensurate spin-density-wave (SDW) with a the bottom part of an hourglass dispersion exists even in this magnetic sample. The strongest component of these fluctuations diminishes at the same temperature where the nodal gap opens. X-ray scattering measurements on the same crystal show no signa…
We point out that unidirectional bond-centered charge-density-wave states in cuprates involve electronic order in both s- and d-wave channels, with non-local Coulomb repulsion suppressing the s-wave component. The resulting bond-charge-density wave, coexisting with superconductivity, is compatible with recent photoemission and tunneling data and as well as neutron-scattering measurements, once long-range order is destroyed by slow fluctuations or glassy disorder. In particular, the real-space structure of d-wave stripes is consistent with the scanning-tunneling-microscopy measurements on both …
We study magnetotransport properties of the electron-doped superconductor Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ with $x$ = 0.14 in magnetic fields up to 92~T, and observe Shubnikov de-Haas magnetic quantum oscillations. The oscillations display a single frequency $F$=255$\pm$10~T, indicating a small Fermi pocket that is $\sim$~1\% of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone and consistent with a Fermi surface reconstructed from the large hole-like cylinder predicted for these layered materials. Despite the low nominal doping, all electronic properties including the effective mass and Hall effect are consist…
