We explain recently observed linear temperature dependence of the nodal Fermi velocity $v_F (T)$ in near-optimally doped cuprates. We argue that it originates from electron-electron interaction, and is a fundamental property of an arbitrary 2D Fermi liquid. We consider a spin-fermion model with the same parameters as in earlier studies, and show that the T term is about 30% at 300K, in agreement with the data. We show that the sub-leading term in $v_F (T)$ is a regular (and small) $T^2$ correction. We also show that at a $2k_F$ quantum-critical point, temperature corrections to the dispersion are singular.
Using a precursor superconductivity scenario for the cuprates we present a theory for the temperature dependent behavior of the spectral gaps associated with four distinct spectroscopies: angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), differential conductance $dI/dV$, quasi-particle interference spectroscopy, and the autocorrelated ARPES pattern. We find good agreement for a range of existing experiments and make predictions for others. Our theory, which incorporates the necessary (observed) contrast between the nodal and anti-nodal response, shows how different nodal gap shapes are associated with the…
Recent angle resolved photoemission spectrascope (ARPES) experiments on strongly underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ cuprates have reported an unusual gap in the nodal direction. Transport experiments on these cuprates found variable range hopping behavior observed. These cuprates have both electron and hole doping which has led to proposals that this cuprate is analogous to a partially compensated semiconductors. The nodal gap then corresponds to the Efros-Schklovskii(ES) gap in such semiconductors. We calculate the doping dependence and temperature dependence of a ES gap model and f…
High-temperature superconducting cuprates exhibit an intriguing phenomenology for the low-energy elementary excitations. In particular, an unconventional temperature dependence of the coherent spectral weight (CSW) has been observed in the superconducting phase by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), both at the antinode where the d-wave paring gap is maximum, as well as along the gapless nodal direction. Here, we combine equilibrium and time-resolved ARPES to track the temperature dependent meltdown of the nodal CSW in Bi-based cuprates with unprecedented sensitivity. We find th…
A variational theory is proposed for the quasiparticle excitation in high T$_{c}$ cuprates. The theory goes beyond the usual Gutzwiller projected mean field state description by including the spin-charge recombination effect in the RVB background. The spin-charge recombination effect is found to qualitatively alter the behavior of the quasiparticle charge as a function of doping and cause considerable anisotropy in quasiparticle weight on the Fermi surface.
We present a theory for the onset of spin density wave order in the superconducting ground state of the cuprates. We compute the scaling dimensions of allowed perturbations of a `relativistic' fixed point with O(4)xO(3) symmetry, including those associated with the fermionic nodal Bogoliubov quasiparticles. Analyses of up to six loops show that all perturbations with square lattice symmetry are likely irrelevant. We demonstrate that the fermion spectral functions are primarily damped by the coupling to fluctuations of a composite field with Ising nematic order. We also discuss the influence of…
Unlike the hole-doped cuprates, both nodal and nodeless superconductivity (SC) are observed in the electron-doped cuprates. To understand these two types of SC states, we propose a unified theory by considering the two-dimensional t-J model in proximity to an antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordering state. Within the slave-boson mean-field approximation, the d-wave pairing symmetry is still the most energetically favorable even in the presence of the external AF field. In the nodal phase, it is found that the nodes carry vorticity and are protected by the adjoint symmetry of time-reversal an…
We study the systematic doping evolution of nodal dispersions by in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the continuously doped surface of a high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$. We reveal that the nodal dispersion has three segments separated by two kinks, located at ~10 meV and roughly 70 meV, respectively. The three segments have different band velocities and different doping dependence. In particular, the velocity of the high-energy segment increases monotonically as the doping level decreases and can even surpass the bare band velocity. We propose tha…
Studying the nodal quasiparticles in superconducting cuprates by photoemission with highly improved momentum resolution, we show that a new "kink" feature in the scattering rate is a key to uncover the nature of electron correlations in these compounds. Our data provide evidence that the main doping independent contribution to the scattering can be well understood in terms of the conventional Fermi liquid model, while the additional doping dependent contribution has a magnetic origin. This sheds doubt on applicability of a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism to high temperature superconductors.
Eliashberg theory generalized for the account of the electron-hole nonequivalence and electron correlations in the vertex function is used. The phonon contribution to the nodal electron Green function in cuprates is viewed. At non- zero temperatures the singularities (kinks) in the frequency behavior of a real and imaginary part of an electron nodal Green function, and also in the nodal part of the density of the electron states modified by an electron-phonon interaction are studied. It is shown that near the optimal doping both the low-energy and high-energy nodal Green function kinks and als…
The three-band Emery model is applied to study the selected principal features of the $d$-$wave$ superconducting phase in the copper-based compounds. The electron-electron correlations are taken into account by the use of the diagrammatic expansion of the Guztwiller wave function (DE-GWF) method. The nodal Fermi velocity, Fermi momentum and effective mass are all determined in the paired state and show relatively good agreement with the available experimental data, as well as with the corresponding single-band calculations. Additionally, the influence of the next-nearest neighbor oxygen-oxygen…
The 63Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) frequency, nu_q, in the multi-layered cuprates is calculated in the cluster model by the exact diagonalization method. The charge imbalance between the outer CuO_2 plane (OP) with apical oxygen (OA) and the inner plane (IP) without OA in three-layered Tl2223 is estimated by comparing our results with the experimental nu_q. In Tl-based cuprates with more than three layers, we predict a large enhancement of the splitting of nu_q between OP and IP by taking into account the reduction of bond length between Cu and OA and a resulting enhancement of the ch…
We point out that unidirectional bond-centered charge-density-wave states in cuprates involve electronic order in both s- and d-wave channels, with non-local Coulomb repulsion suppressing the s-wave component. The resulting bond-charge-density wave, coexisting with superconductivity, is compatible with recent photoemission and tunneling data and as well as neutron-scattering measurements, once long-range order is destroyed by slow fluctuations or glassy disorder. In particular, the real-space structure of d-wave stripes is consistent with the scanning-tunneling-microscopy measurements on both …
The complexity of competing orders in cuprates has recently been multiplied by a number of bulk evidences of charge ordering with wavevector that connects the antinodal region of the Fermi surface. This results contradicts many spectroscopic results of the nodal nesting. To resolve this issue, we carry out a unified study of the resulting electronic fingerprints of both nodal and antinodal nestings (NNs/ANs), and compare with angle-resolved photoemission, scanning tunneling spectroscopic data, as well as bulk sensitive Hall effect measurements. Our result makes several definitive distinctions …
The experimental finding of an ubiquitous kink in the nodal direction of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies of superconducting cuprates has been reproduced theoretically. Our model is built upon the Migdal-Eliashberg theory for the electron self-energy within the phonon-coupling scenario. Following this perturbative approach, a numerical evaluation of the bare band dispersion energy in terms of the electron-phonon coupling parameter $λ$ allows a unified description of the nodal-kink effect. Our study reveals that distinction between $λ$ and the technically defined mass-enhancement par…
A new generation of angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on the cuprate superconductors offer the promise of enhanced momentum and energy resolution. In particular, the energy and temperature dependence of the on-shell nodal (k_x=k_y) quasiparticle scattering rate can be studied. In the superconducting state, low temperature transport measurements suggest that one can describe nodal quasiparticles within the framework of a BCS d-wave model by including forward elastic scattering and spin-fluctuation inelastic scattering. Here, using this model, we calculate the temp…
We report on laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4-d). The data show the existence of a nodal hole-pocket Fermi-surface both in the normal and superconducting states. We prove that its origin is long-range antiferromagnetism by an analysis of the coherence factors in the main and folded bands. This coexistence of long-range antiferromagnetism and superconductivity implies that electron-doped cuprates are two-Fermi-surface superconductors. The measured superconducting gap in the nodal hole-pocket is compatible with a …
The emergence of the coherent quasiparticle peak and the development of the peak-dip-hump structure in the anti-nodal region below $T_{c}$ is the most prominent non-BCS signature of the underdoped high-$T_{c}$ cuprates, in which no coherent quasiparticle can be defined in the anti-nodal region above $T_{c}$. The peak-dip-hump structure has been commonly interpreted as the result of the coupling of the electron to some Bosonic mode. However, such an electron-Boson coupling picture does not answer the question of \textit{why the quasiparticle dispersion is so flat in the anti-nodal region}, a be…
In this paper we present a review of bosonic renormalization effects on electronic carriers observed from angle-resolved photoemission spectra in the cuprates. We specifically discuss the viewpoint that these renormalizations represent coupling of the electrons to the lattice, and review how the wide range of materials dependence, such as the number of CuO$_2$ layers, and the doping dependence can be straightforwardly understood as arising due to novel electron-phonon coupling.
We study the spontaneous gap generation for gapless nodal fermions within an effective gauge field theory of high temperature superconductors. When superconductivity appears, the gauge boson acquires a finite mass via Anderson-Higgs mechanism. Spontaneous nodal gap generation takes place if the gauge boson mass $ξ$ is zero or less than a critical value $ξ_{c}$ but is suppressed by a larger gauge boson mass. The generated nodal gap prohibits the appearance of low-energy fermion excitations and leads to antiferromagnetic order. Using the fact that gauge boson mass $ξ$ is proportional to superflu…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the doping dependence of the lifetime and the mass renormalization of the low energy excitations in the high-Tc cuprate (Bi,Pb)_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 along the zone diagonal. We find a linear energy de-pendence of the scattering rate for the underdoped samples and a quadratic energy depend-ence in the overdoped case. The mass enhancement of the quasiparticles due to the many body effects at the Fermi energy is found to be in the order of 2 and the renormalization extends over a large energy range for both the normal and the supercondu…
Recent STM measurements have revealed the existence of periodic charge modulations at the surface of certain cuprate superconductors. Here we show that the observed patterns are compatible with the formation of a three-dimensional crystal of doped holes, with space correlations extending between different Cu-O layers. This puts severe constraints on the dynamical stability of the crystallised hole structure, resulting in a close relationship between the periodicity of the electronic modulation and the interlayer distance.
The analytical expression for dynamical charge susceptibility in layered cuprates has been derived in the frame of singlet-correlated band model beyond random-phase-approximation (RPA) scheme. Our calculations performed near optimal doping regime show that there is a peak in real part of the charge susceptibility $χ({\bf q},ω)$ at {\bf Q} = ($π$, $π$) at strong enough inter-site Coulomb repulsion. Together with the strong maximum in the Im $χ({\bf Q},ω)$ at 15 meV it confirms the formation of low-energetic plasmons or charge fluctuations. This provides a jsutification that these excitations ar…
We consider hole pairing in the pseudopgap phase of High T_c cuprates, as arising from resonant scattering on dynamically deformable molecular units. As a result, localized and delocalized features coexist in the one-particle spectra: the pseudogap and propagating diffusive Bogoliubov modes. Due to the anisotropy of the electron dispersion and pairing interaction, these two manifestations have different impact in the different regions of the Brillouin zone. We illustrate that for k-vectors crossing the arc, determined by the chemical potential, joining the anti-nodal and the nodal point.
Recent experimental findings show that the pairing interaction in hole-doped cuprates resides in the nodal (FS arcs) region accompanied by the separate antinodal pseudogap. A corresponding multiband model of cuprate superconductivity is developed. It is based on the electronic spectrum evolving with doping and extends authors earlier approaches. The leading pair-transfer interaction is supposed between the itinerant (mainly oxygen) band and a nodal defect (polaron) band created by doping. These components are overlapping. The defect subband created in the antinodal region of the momentum space…
In a frame of the $t-J-G$ model we derive the microscopical expression for the circulating orbital currents in layered cuprates using the anomalous correlation functions. In agreement with $μ$-on spin relaxation ($μ$SR), nuclear quadrupolar resonance (NQR) and inelastic neutron scattering(INS) experiments in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ we successfully explain the order of magnitude and the monotonous increase of the {\it internal} magnetic fields resulting from these currents upon cooling. However, the jump in the intensity of the magnetic fields at T$_c$ reported recently seems to indicate a non-m…
We measured the low-temperature thermal conductivity of a new layered superconductor with quasi-one-dimensional characteristics, the ternary telluride Ta$_4$Pd$_3$Te$_{16}$ with transition temperature $T_c \approx$ 4.3 K. The significant residual linear term of thermal conductivity in zero magnetic field and its rapid field dependence provide evidences for nodes in the superconducting gap. By measuring resistivity under pressures, we reveal a superconducting dome in the temperature-pressure phase diagram. The existence of gap nodes and superconducting dome suggests unconventional superconducti…
Nodal quasiparticles of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 have been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with high momentum and energy resolution. Low-energy tunable photons have enabled us to resolve a small nodal bilayer splitting, unmasking the intrinsic single-particle scattering rate. The nodal scattering rate is abruptly suppressed upon the superconducting transition, and shows a linear energy dependence at low energies, indicating the nontrivial effect of elastic scatterings on the quasiparticles. With increasing energy, the antibonding-band scattering rate becomes higher than the bonding o…
Although more than twenty years have passed since the discovery of high temperature cuprate superconductivity, the identification of the superconducting order parameter is still under debate. Here, we show that the nodal gap component is the best candidate for the superconducting order parameter. It scales with the critical temperature $T_c$ over a wide doping range and displays a significant temperature dependence below $T_c$ in both the underdoped and the overdoped regimes of the phase diagram. In contrast, the antinodal gap component does not scale with $T_c$ in the underdoped side and appe…
There is now copious direct experimental evidence of various forms of (short-range) charge order in underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors, and spectroscopic signatures of a nodal-antinodal dichotomy in the structure of the single-particle spectral functions. In this context, we analyze the Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectrum in a superconducting nematic glass. The coincidence of the superconducting "nodal points" and the nematic "cold-spots" on the Fermi surface naturally accounts for many of the most salient features of the measured spectral functions (from angle-resolved photoemi…
The superconducting state of underdoped cuprates is often described in terms of a single energy-scale, associated with the maximum of the (d-wave) gap. Here, we report on electronic Raman scattering results, which show that the gap function in the underdoped regime is characterized by two energy scales, depending on doping in opposite manners. Their ratios to the maximum critical temperature are found to be universal in cuprates. Our experimental results also reveal two different quasiparticle dynamics in the underdoped superconducting state, associated with two regions of momentum space: noda…
In order to explore why the multi-layered cuprates have such high Tc's, we have examined various inter-layer processes. Since the inter-layer one-electron hopping has little effects on the band structure, we turn to the inter-layer pair hopping. The superconductivity in a double-layer Hubbard model with and without the inter-layer pair hopping, as studied by solving the Eliashberg equation with the fluctuation exchange approximation, reveals that the inter-layer pair hopping acts to increase the pairing interaction and the self-energy simultaneously, but that the former effect supersedes the l…
High-Tc superconductivity in layered cuprates is described in a BCS-BEC formalism with linearly-dispersive s- and d-wave Cooper pairs moving in quasi-2D finite-width layers about the CuO_2 planes. This yields a closed formula for Tc determined by the layer width, the Debye frequency, the pairing energy, and the in-plane penetration depth. The new formula reasonably reproduces empirical values of superconducting Tc's for seven different compounds among the LSCO, YBCO, BSCCO and TBCCO layered cuprates.
The hallmark of superconductivity is the rigidity of the quantum-mechanical phase of electrons, responsible for superfluid behavior and Meissner effect. The strength of the phase stiffness is set by the Josephson coupling, which is strongly anisotropic in layered superconducting cuprates. So far, THz light pulses have been efficiently used to achieve non-linear control of the out-of-plane Josephson plasma mode, whose frequency scale lies in the THz range. However, the high-energy in-plane plasma mode has been assumed to be insensitive to THz pumping. Here, we show that THz driving of both low-…
Raman and ARPES experiments have demonstrated that in superconducting underdoped cuprates nodal and antinodal regions are characterized by two energy scales instead of the one expected in BCS. The nodal scale decreases with underdoping while the antinodal one increases. Contrary to the behavior expected for an increasing energy scale, the antinodal Raman intensity decreases with decreasing doping. Using the Yang, Rice and Zhang (YRZ) model, we show that these features are a consequence of the non-conventional nature of the superconducting state in which superconductivity and pseudogap correlat…
Recent angle-resolved photoemission electron spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments demonstrate that the momentum dependence of the spectral gap in underdoped cuprates does not follow a pure $d$-wave form [H. Anzai et a., Nat. Comm. {\bf 4}, 1815 (2013)]. This deviation is highly controversial. It has often been interpretated as a proof of the non-superconducting origin of the antinodal gap in the underdoped regime. In this article, we show that the measured angular dependence of the spectral gap can be explained by the basic nature of pairs in high-T$_c$ cuprates. Hole pairs, or {\it pairons}, form…
We report on the phase diagram for charge-stripe order in La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4), determined by neutron and x-ray scattering studies and resistivity measurements. From an analysis of the in-plane resistivity motivated by recent nuclear-quadrupole-resonance studies, we conclude that the transition temperature for local charge ordering decreases monotonically with x, and hence that local antiferromagnetic order is uniquely correlated with the anomalous depression of superconductivity at x = 1/8. This result is consistent with theories in which superconductivity depends on the existence of c…
The microscopical analysis of the unconventional and puzzling physics of the underdoped cuprates, as carried out lately by means of the Composite Operator Method (COM) applied to the 2D Hubbard model, is reviewed and systematized. The 2D Hubbard model has been adopted as it has been considered the minimal model capable to describe the most peculiar features of cuprates held responsible for their anomalous behavior. COM is designed to endorse, since its foundations, the systematic emergence in any SCS of new elementary excitations described by composite operators obeying non-canonical algebras.…
La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$CuO$_4$ is not a superconductor and its resistivity follows a purely T$^2$ temperature dependence at very low temperatures. La$_{1.71}$Sr$_{0.29}$CuO$_4$, on the other hand, has a superconducting ground state together with a T-Linear term in its resistivity. The concomitant emergence of these two features below a critical doping is mystifying. Here, I notice that the electron-electron collision rate in the Fermi liquid above the doping threshold is unusually large. The scattering time of nodal quasi-particles expressed in a dimensionless parameter $ζ$ is very close to wha…
We report a site selective Cu-NMR study on under-doped Hg-based five-layered high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate HgBa2Ca4Cu5Oy with a Tc=72 K. Antiferromagnetism (AF) has been found to take place at TN=290 K, exhibiting a large antiferromagnetic moment of 0.67-0.69uB at three inner planes (IP's). This value is comparable to the values reported for non-doped cuprates, suggesting that the IP may be in a nearly non-doped regime. Most surprisingly, the AF order is also detected with M(OP)=0.1uB even at two outer planes (OP's) that are responsible for the onset of superconductivity (SC). The high-Tc SC at Tc …
The intrinsic structural metastability in cuprate high T$_c$ materials, evidenced in a checker-board domain structure of the CuO$_2$ planes, locally breaks translational and rotational symmetry. Dynamical charge - deformation fluctuations of such nano-size unidirectional domains, involving Cu-O-Cu molecular bonds, result in resonantly fluctuating diamagnetic pairs embedded in a correlated Fermi liquid. As a consequence, the single-particle spectral properties acquire simultaneously (i) fermionic low energy Bogoliubov branches for propagating Cooper pairs and (ii) bosonic localized glassy struc…
Comparison is made of the electronic structure of the little-studied layered transition metal oxide LiNbO$_2$ with that of Na$_x$CoO$_2$, which has attracted tremendous interest since superconductivity was discovered in its hydrate. Although the active transition metal $d$ states are quite different due to different crystal fields and band filling, both systems show a strong change of electronic structure with changes in the distance between the transition metal ion layer and the oxygen layers. The niobate is unusual in having a large second-neighbor hopping amplitude, and a nearest neighbor h…
We model the underdoped cuprates using fermions moving in a background with local antiferromagnetic order. The antiferromagnetic order fluctuates in orientation, but not in magnitude, so that there is no long-range antiferromagnetism, but a 'topological' order survives. The normal state is described as a fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*), with electron-like quasiparticles coupled to the fractionalized excitations of the fluctuating antiferromagnet. The electronic quasiparticles reside near pocket Fermi surfaces enclosing total area x (the dopant density), centered away from the magnetic Brillo…
The recent scanning tunnelling results of Alldredge et al on Bi-2212 and of Hanaguri et al on Na-CCOC are examined from the perspective of the BCS/BEC boson-fermion resonant crossover model for the mixed-valent HTSC cuprates. The model specifies the two energy scales controlling the development of HTSC behaviour and the dichotomy often now alluded to between nodal and antinodal phenomena in the HTSC cuprates. Indication is extracted from the data as to how the choice of the particular HTSC system sees these two basic energy scales (cursive-U, the local pair binding energy and, Delta-sc, the no…
The highest superconducting transition temperatures in the cuprates are achieved in bilayer and trilayer systems, highlighting the importance of intralayer interactions for high Tc. It has been argued that interlayer hybridization vanishes along the nodal directions by way of a specific pattern of orbital overlap. Recent quantum oscillation measurements in bilayer cuprates have provided evidence for a residual bilayer-splitting at the nodes that is sufficiently small to enable magnetic breakdown tunneling at the nodes. Here we show that several key features of the experimental data can be unde…
The modulated density of states observed in recent STM experiments in underdoped cuprates is argued to be a manifestation of the charge density wave of Cooper pairs (CPCDW). CPCDW formation is due to superconducting phase fluctuations enhanced by Mott-Hubbard correlations near half-filling. The physics behind the CPCDW is related to a Hofstadter problem in a dual superconductor. It is shown that CPCDW does not impact nodal fermions at the leading order. An experiment is proposed to probe coupling of the CPCDW to the spin carried by nodal quasiparticles.
Motivated by recent photoemission experiments on cuprates, the low-lying excitations of a strongly correlated superconducting state are studied numerically. It is observed that along the nodal direction these low-lying one-particle excitations show a linear momentum dependence for a wide range of excitation energies and, thus, they do not present a kink-like structure. The nodal Fermi velocity $v_{\rm F}$, as well as other observables, are systematically evaluated directly from the calculated dispersions, and they are found to compare well with experiments. It is argued that the parameter depe…
We report on the phase diagram of antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC) in three-layered Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_6(F,O)_2 by means of Cu-NMR measurements. It is demonstrated that AFM and SC uniformly coexist in three-layered compounds as well as in four- and five-layered ones. The critical hole density p_c for the long range AFM order is determined as p_c ~ 0.075, which is larger than p_c ~ 0.02 and 0.055 in single- and bi-layered compounds, and smaller than p_c ~ 0.08-0.09 and 0.10-0.11 in four- and five-layered compounds, respectively. This variation of p_c is attributed to the magnetic …
We apply the new-generation ARPES methodology to the most widely studied cuprate superconductor YBCO. Considering the nodal direction, we found noticeable renormalization effects known as "kinks" both in the quasiparticle dispersion and scattering rate, the bilayer splitting and evidence for strong interband scattering -- all the characteristic features of the nodal quasiparticles detected earlier in BSCCO. The typical energy scale and the doping dependence of the "kinks" clearly point to their intimate relation with the spin-1 resonance seen in the neutron scattering experiments. Our findings…
The pursuit of a comprehensive understanding of the dynamical nature of intertwined orders in quantum matter has fueled the development of several new experimental techniques, including time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES). In this regard, the study of copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors, prototypical quantum materials, has furthered both the technical advancement of the experimental technique, as well as the understanding of their correlated dynamical properties. Here, we provide a brief historical overview of the TR-ARPES investigations of cuprates, and re…
Using a conventional BCS -- Fermi liquid model we calculate the c-axis optical reflectivity of the layered high temperature cuprate superconductors by obtaining the finite temperature dynamical dielectric function in a microscopic self-consistent gauge invariant formalism. We get good semi-quantitative agreement with all the existing experimental data by using the measured normal state $dc$ resistivities as the input parameters in obtaining the c-axis hopping amplitude and the normal state level broadening in our microscopic calculation.
The coexistence state of antiferromagnetism (AF) and superconductivity (SC) has been observed in five-layered cuprates. However, this coexistence state disappears, and the AF phase and SC phase lose contact in the doping phase diagram toward double- and single-layered cuprates. We investigate the mechanism of the disappearance of the coexistence of AF and SC in disordered cuprate superconductors in order to understand these doping phase diagrams. In single- and double-layered cuprates, electrons on the CuO$_2$ plane experience the disorder effect through inhomogeneity in the charge reservoir l…
The origin of uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure effects on $T_c$ in the single-layered cuprate superconductors is theoretically explored. A two-orbital model, derived from first principles and analyzed with the fluctuation exchange approximation gives axial-dependent pressure coefficients, $\partial T_c/\partial P_a>0$, $\partial T_c/\partial P_c<0$, with a hydrostatic response $\partial T_c/\partial P>0$ for both La214 and Hg1201 cuprates, in qualitative agreement with experiments. Physically, this is shown to come from a unified picture in which higher $T_c$ is achieved with an "orbital dist…
We argue that the shape of the dispersion along the nodal and antinodal directions in the cuprates can be understood as a consequence of the interaction of the electrons with collective spin excitations. In the normal state, the dispersion displays a crossover at an energy where the decay into spin fluctuations becomes relevant. In the superconducting state, the antinodal dispersion is strongly affected by the spin resonance and displays an S-shape whose magnitude scales with the resonance intensity. For nodal fermions, relevant spin excitations do not have resonance behavior, rather they are …
A d-wave high temperature cuprate superconductor exhibits a nematic ordering transition at zero temperature. Near the quantum critical point, the coupling between gapless nodal quasiparticles and nematic order parameter fluctuation can result in unusual behaviors, such as extreme anisotropy of fermion velocities. We study the disorder effect on the nematic quantum critical behavior and especially on the flow of fermion velocities. The disorders that couple to nodal quasiparticles are divided into three types: random mass, random gauge field, and random chemical potential. A renormalization gro…
We consider the interlayer pair-tunneling model for layered cuprates, including an effective single particle hopping along the c-axis. A phenomenological suppression of the c-axis hopping matrix element, by the pseudogap in cuprate superconductors, is incorporated. At optimal doping, quantities characteristic to the superconducting state, such as the transition temperature and the superconducting gap are calculated. Results from our calculations are consistent with the experimental observations with the noteworthy point that, the superconducting gap as a function of temperature shows excellent…
