We study generators and relations of Cox rings of K3 surfaces of Picard number two. In particular we consider the Cox rings of classical examples of K3 surfaces, such as quartic surfaces containing a line and elliptic K3 surfaces.
In this paper we study the geometry of the $14$ families of K3 surfaces of Picard number four with finite automorphism group, whose Néron-Severi lattices have been classified by È.B. Vinberg. We provide projective models, we identify the degrees of a generating set of the Cox ring and in some cases we prove the unirationality of the associated moduli space.
Let $X$ be a projective K3 surface over $\mathbb C$. We prove that its Cox ring $R(X)$ has a generating set whose degrees are either classes of smooth rational curves, sums of at most three elements of the Hilbert basis of the nef cone, or of the form $2(f+f')$, where $f,f'$ are classes of elliptic fibrations with $f\cdot f'=2$. This result and techniques using Koszul's type exact sequences allow to determine a generating set for the Cox ring of all Mori dream K3 surfaces of Picard number three which is minimal in most cases. A presentation for the Cox ring is given in some special cases with …
To study syzygies of the Cox rings of del Pezzo surfaces, we calculate important syzygetic invariants such as the Hilbert functions, the Green-Lazarsfeld indices, the projective dimensions, and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. Using these computations as well as the natural multigrading structures by the Picard groups of del Pezzo surfaces and Weyl group actions on Picard lattices, we determine the Betti diagrams of the Cox rings of del Pezzo surfaces of degree at most four.
We consider modifications, for example blow ups, of Mori dream spaces and provide algorithms for investigating the effect on the Cox ring, e.g. testing finite generation or computing an explicit presentation in terms of generators and relations. As a first application, we compute the Cox rings of all Gorenstein log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one. Moreover, we show computationally that all smooth rational surfaces of Picard number at most six are Mori dream surfaces and we provide explicit presentations of the Cox ring for those not admitting a torus action. Finally, we provide the Cox…
We bring examples of toric varieties blown up at a point in the torus that do not have finitely generated Cox rings. These examples are generalizations of previous work where toric surfaces of Picard number 1 were studied. In this article we consider toric varieties of higher Picard number and higher dimension. In particular, we bring examples of weighted projective 3-spaces blown up at a point that do not have finitely generated Cox rings.
We determine the Cox rings of the minimal resolutions of cubic surfaces with at most rational double points, of blow ups of the projective plane at non-general configurations of six points and of three dimensional smooth Fano varieties of Picard numbers one and two.
We show that finitely generated Cox rings are Gorenstein. This leads to a refined characterization of varieties of Fano type: they are exactly those projective varieties with Gorenstein canonical quasicone Cox ring. We then show that for varieties of Fano type and Kawamata log terminal quasicones, iteration of Cox rings is finite with factorial master Cox ring. Moreover, we prove a relative version of Cox ring iteration for almost principal solvable $G$-bundles.
We compute the relations in the Cox ring of the moduli space $\overline{M}_{0,6}$. This gives a presentation of the Cox ring as a quotient of a polynomial ring with 40 generators by an ideal with 225 generators that come in 5 symmetry classes.
We investigate Cox rings of symplectic resolutions of quotients of $\mathbb{C}^{2n}$ by finite symplectic group actions. We propose a finite generating set of the Cox ring of a symplectic resolution and prove that under a condition concerning monomial valuations it is sufficient. Also, three 4-dimensional examples are described in detail. Generators of the (expected) Cox rings of symplectic resolutions are computed and in one case a resolution is constructed as a GIT quotient of the spectrum of the Cox ring.
Given the Luna-Vust invariants of a spherical variety, we determine the Luna-Vust invariants of the spectrum of its Cox ring. In particular, we deduce an explicit description of the divisor class group of the Cox ring. It follows that every spherical variety admits iteration of Cox rings. Moreover, we obtain a combinatorial proof of the fact that the Cox ring is determined by the spherical skeleton, which is a known result following from the description of the Cox ring due to Brion. Finally, we show that a conjectural combinatorial smoothness criterion can be reduced to the case of a factorial…
The Cox ring of an algebraic variety with torus action
Given a surjective morphism $π\colon X\to Y$ of normal varieties satisfying some regularity hypotheses we prove how to recover a Cox ring of the generic fiber of $π$ from the Cox ring of $X$. As a corollary we show that in some cases it is also possible to recover the Cox ring of a very general fiber, and finally we give an application in the case of the blowing-up of a toric fiber space.
We study Cox rings of normal threefolds on which SL2 acts with a dense orbit. Exploiting the method of U-invariants, we obtain combinatorial criteria for the total coordinate space and the base variety to have log terminal singularities. Then, we investigate the iteration of Cox rings and obtain a bound on its length. Finally, we develop a general approach to the description of the Cox ring by generators and relations which is effective for normal SL2 /$μ$n-embeddings.
We define the equivariant Cox ring of a normal variety with algebraic group action. We study algebraic and geometric aspects of this object and show how it is related to the ordinary Cox ring. Then, we specialize to the case of normal rational varieties of complexity one under the action of a connected reductive group G. We show that the G-equivariant Cox ring is then a finitely generated integral normal G-algebra. Under a mild additional condition, we give a presentation by generators and relations of its subalgebra of U-invariants, where U is the unipotent part of a Borel subgroup of G. The …
We introduce the notion of intrinsic Grassmannians which generalizes the well known weighted Grassmannians. An intrinsic Grassmannian is a normal projective variety whose Cox ring is defined by the Plücker ideal $I_{d,n}$ of the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(d,n)$. We give a complete classification of all smooth Fano intrinsic Grassmannians of type $(2,n)$ with Picard number two and prove an explicit formula to compute the total number of such varieties for an arbitrary $n$. We study their geometry and show that they satisfy Fujita's freeness conjecture.
We develop a method of finding a Cox ring of a crepant resolution of a quotient singularity with a torus action and apply it to examples of symplectic quotient singularities in dimension 4. In addition we obtain a bound on the degrees of homogeneous generators of the Cox ring in a more general setup, based on the multigraded Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing.
In this note we introduce Cox rings of singularities and explicitly compute them in the case of du Val singularities $\mathbb{D}_n,\mathbb{E}_6,\mathbb{E}_7$ and $\mathbb{E}_8$.
The Cox rings of del Pezzo surfaces are closely related to the Lie groups E_n. In this paper, we generalize the definition of Cox rings to G- surfaces defined by us earlier, where the Lie groups G=A_n, D_n or E_n. We show that the Cox ring of a G-surface S is almost determined by an irreducible representation V of G, and is generated by degree one elements. The Proj of this ring is a sub-variety of the orbit of the highest weight vector in V, and both are closed sub-varieties of the projective space P(V) defined by quadratic equations.

The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we determine which blow-ups of products of projective spaces at general points are varieties of Fano type, and give boundary divisors making these spaces log Fano pairs. Secondly, we describe generators of the Cox rings of some cases.
We study Cox rings of crepant resolutions of quotient singularities $\mathbb{C}^3/G$ where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $SL(3,\mathbb{C})$. We use them to obtain information on the geometric structure of these resolutions, number of different resolutions and relations between them. In particular, we treat explicitly several examples where $G$ contains elements of age 2.
We prove that the redundant blow-up preserves the finite generation of the Cox ring of a rational surface under a suitable assumption, and we study the birational structure of Mori dream rational surfaces via redundant blow-ups. It turns out that the redundant blow-up completely characterizes birational morphisms of Mori dream rational surfaces with anticanonical Iitaka dimension $0$. As an application, we construct new Mori dream rational surfaces with anticanonical Iitaka dimension $0$ and $-\infty$ of arbitrarily large Picard number.
Given a morphism $F : X \rightarrow Y$ from a Mori Dream Space $X$ to a smooth Mori Dream Space $Y$ and quasicoherent sheaves $\mathcal{F}$ on $X$ and $\mathcal{G}$ on $Y$ , we describe the inverse image of $\mathcal{G}$ by $F$ and the direct image of $\mathcal{F}$ by $F$ in terms of the corresponding modules over the Cox rings graded in the class groups.
We study a toric degeneration of the Cox ring of the moduli of principal $SL_m(\mathbb{C})$ bundles on the projective line, with quasi parabolic data given by the the stabilizer of the highest weight vector in $\mathbb{C}^m$ and its dual $\bigwedge^{m-1}(\mathbb{C}^m)$. The affine semigroup algebra resulting from this degeneration is described using the $K-$Pieri rule from Kac-Moody representation theory. Along the way we give a proof of the $K-$Pieri rule which utilizes the classical Pieri rule and elements of commutative algebra, and we describe a relationship between the Cox ring and a clas…
We develop some concrete methods to build Sarkisov links, starting from Mori fibre spaces. This is done by studying low rank Cox rings and their properties. As part of this development, we give an algorithm to construct explicitly the coarse moduli space of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack. This can be viewed as the generalisation of the notion of well-formedness for weighted projective spaces to homogeneous coordinate ring of toric varieties. As an illustration, we apply these methods to study birational transformations of certain fibrations of del Pezzo surfaces over $\mathbb{P}^1$, into other …
We present a new eigenvalue method for solving a system of Laurent polynomial equations defining a zero-dimensional reduced subscheme of a toric compactification $X$ of $(\mathbb{C} \setminus \{0\})^n$. We homogenize the input equations to obtain a homogeneous ideal in the Cox ring of $X$ and generalize the eigenvalue, eigenvector theorem for rootfinding in affine space to compute homogeneous coordinates of the solutions. Several numerical experiments show the effectiveness of the resulting method. In particular, the method outperforms existing solvers in the case of (nearly) degenerate system…
