When placed on rough hydrophobic surfaces, water droplets of diameter larger than a few millimeters can easily form pearls, as they are in the Cassie-Baxter state with air pockets trapped underneath the droplet. Intriguingly, a natural evaporating process can drive such a Fakir drop into a completely wetting (Wenzel) state. Our microscopic observations with simultaneous side and bottom views of evaporating droplets upon transparent hydrophobic microstructures elucidate the water-filling dynamics and the mechanism of this evaporation-triggered transition. For the present material the wetting transition occurs when the water droplet size decreases to a few hundreds of micrometers in radius. We present a general global energy argument which estimates the interfacial energies depending on the drop size and can account for the critical radius for the transition.
Adsorption of small amphiphilic molecules occurs in various biological and technological processes, sometimes desired, the other times unwanted (e.g., contamination). Surface-active molecules preferentially bind to interfaces and affect their wetting properties. We study the adsorption of short-chained alcohols (simple surfactants) to the water-vapor interface and solid surfaces of various polarities using molecular dynamics simulations. The analysis enables us to establish a theoretical expression for the adsorption coefficient, which exponentially scales with the molecular surface area and t…
Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to study the wetting behavior of nanoscale aqueous hydrophilic and hydrophobic Imidazolium based ionic liquid (IL) droplets on a solid graphite substrate subjected to the perpendicular electric field. Imminent transformation in the droplet configuration was observed at E = 0.08 V/Å both for hydrophobic ILs [EMIM][NTF2] and SPC/E water droplets. However, for hydrophilic, [EMIM][BF4], the droplet wets asymmetrically within electric field E = 0.09 V/Å for lower weight percentages of ILs and E = 0.1 V/Å at a higher weight percentage of ILs (i.e., 50wt%)…
It is established that roughness and chemistry play a crucial role in the wetting properties of a substrate. Yet, few studies have analyzed systematically the effect of the non-uniformity in the distribution of texture and surface tension of substrates on its wetting properties. In this work we investigate this issue theoretically and numerically. We propose a continuous model that takes into account the total energy required to create interfaces of a droplet in two possible wetting states: Cassie-Baxter(CB) with air pockets trapped underneath the droplet; and the other characterized by the ho…
A water structure indicator suitable for generic contexts: two-liquid behavior at hydration and nanoconfinement conditions and a molecular approach to hydrophobicity and wetting
Evaporation of surfactant laden sessile droplets is omnipresent in nature and industrial applications such as inkjet printing. Soluble surfactants start to form micelles in an aqueous solution for surfactant concentrations exceeding the critical micelle concentration (CMC). Here, the evaporation of aqueous sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) sessile droplets on hydrophobic surfaces were experimentally investigated for SDS concentrations ranging from 0.025 to 1 CMC. In contrast to the constant contact angle of an evaporating sessile water droplet, we observed that, at the same surface the contact angl…

We investigate theoretically and numerically the diffusion-limited evaporation of a liquid deposited on a fiber in two configurations: a sleeve and a axisymmetric barrel-shaped droplet. For a sleeve, the local flux depends on both the aspect ratio and the smallest length of the problem. By using analytical calculations and 3D finite elements simulations, we predict a divergence of this flux further localized at the edge as the aspect ratio increases. The evaporation of axisymmetric drops on a fiber is studied with numerical simulations. For sufficiently large volumes, we evidence that the evap…
Nanofluids hold promise for a wide range of areas of industry. However, understanding of wetting behavior and deposition formation in course of drying and spreading of nanofluids, particularly containing surfactants, is still poor. In this paper, the evaporation dynamics of quantum dot-based nanofluids and evaporation-driven self-assembly in nanocolloidal suspensions on hexamethyldisilazane-, polystyrene-, and polypropylene-coated hydrophobic surfaces have been studied experimentally. Moreover, for the very first time, we make a step to understanding of wetting dynamics of superspreader surfac…
We study the dynamics of contact angle of a droplet of binary solution evaporating on a super wetting surface. Recent experiments show that although equilibrium contact angle of such droplet is zero, the contract angle can show complex time dependence before reaching the equilibrium value. We analyse such phenomena by extending our previous theory for the dynamics of an evaporating single component droplet to double component droplet. We show that the time dependence of the contact angle can be quite complex. Typically, it first decreases slightly, and then increases and finally decreases agai…
Effects of Substrate Heating and Wettability on Evaporation Dynamics and Deposition Patterns for a Sessile Water Droplet Containing Colloidal Particles
The modification of the wetting properties of marble surfaces upon multi-scale texturing induced by ultrafast laser processing (340 fs pulse duration, 1030 nm wavelength) has been investigated with the aim of evaluating its potential for surface protection. The contact angle (CA) of a water drop placed on the surface was used to assess the wettability of the processed areas. Although the surfaces are initially hydrophilic upon laser treatment, after a few days they develop a strong hydrophobic behavior. Marble surfaces have been irradiated with different scan line separations to elucidate the …
