在$T\sim 0.9 T_c$中,研究了单组分流体中轴对称小液滴在加热壁面上部分润湿条件下的蒸发。在动态范德华理论(Phys. Rev.

In a one-component fluid, we investigate evaporation of a small axysymmetric liquid droplet in the partial wetting condition on a heated wall at $T\sim 0.9 T_c$. In the dynamic van der Waals theory (Phys. Rev. E {\bf 75}, 036304 (2007)), we take into account the latent heat transport from liquid to gas upon evaporation. Along the gas-liquid interface, the temperature is nearly equal to the equilibrium coexisting temperature away from the substrate, but it rises sharply to the wall temperature close to the substrate. On an isothermal substrate, evaporation takes place mostly on a narrow interface region near the contact line in a late stage, which is a characteristic feature in one-component fluids.
The article reports droplet evaporation kinetics on inclined substrates. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses of the droplet evaporation behaviour for different substrate declination, wettability and temperatures have been presented. Sessile droplets with substrate declination exhibit distorted shape and evaporate at different rates compared to droplets on the same horizontal substrate and is characterized by more often changes in regimes of evaporation. The slip stick and jump stick modes are prominent during evaporation. For droplets on inclined substrates, the evaporative flu…
Saliva is primarily composed of water, but additionally includes a variety of organic and inorganic substances such as salt, proteins, peptides, mucins, virions, etc. The presence of such solutes affects the evaporation time of respiratory droplets that are sedimenting in air, and thereby the airborne transmission of infections. From solutions of the coupled heat-conduction and water-diffusion equations within the droplet and in the ambient vapor phase, we find that the solute-induced water vapor-pressure reduction considerably slows down the evaporation process and dominates the solute-concen…
The evaporation of a sessile droplet spontaneously induces an internal capillary liquid flow. The surface-tension driven minimisation of surface area and/or surface-tension differences at the liquid-gas interface caused by evaporation-induced temperature or chemical gradients set the liquid into motion. This flow drags along suspended material and is one of the keys to control the material deposition in the stain that is left behind by a drying droplet. Applications of this principle range from the control of stain formation in the printing and coating industry, to the analysis of DNA, to fore…
Pathogens in droplets on fomites and aerosols go through extreme physiochemical conditions, such as confinement and osmotic stress, due to evaporation. Still, these droplets are the predominant transmission routes of many contagious diseases. The biggest challenge for studying the survival mechanisms of pathogens in extreme conditions is closely observing them, especially in aerosols, due to the small droplet sizes, movements, and fast evaporative dynamics. To mimic evaporating aerosols and microdroplets, we employ microfluidic emulsion droplets. The presence of oil forms a microdroplet cluste…
The evaporation of a binary sessile ethanol-water droplet on an inclined substrate is studied experimentally just below the critical sliding angles for different substrate temperatures. A customized goniometer equipped with a CMOS camera and an infrared (IR) camera is used. The droplet is observed to remain pinned in the advancing side during the evaporation process, while the receding side contracts. The asymmetry in the advancing and receding contact angles of the droplet on inclined substrate results in complex thermo-solutal Marangoni convection that is captured through IR images. The drop…
The present article experimentally and theoretically probes the evaporation kinetics of sessile saline droplets. Observations reveal that presence of solvated ions leads to modulated evaporation kinetics, which is further a function of surface wettability. On hydrophilic surfaces, increasing salt concentration leads to enhanced evaporation rates, whereas on superhydrophobic surfaces, it first enhances and reduces with concentration. Also, the nature and extents of the evaporation regimes constant contact angle or constant contact radius are dependent on the salt concentration. The reduced evap…
We investigate theoretically and numerically the diffusion-limited evaporation of a liquid deposited on a fiber in two configurations: a sleeve and a axisymmetric barrel-shaped droplet. For a sleeve, the local flux depends on both the aspect ratio and the smallest length of the problem. By using analytical calculations and 3D finite elements simulations, we predict a divergence of this flux further localized at the edge as the aspect ratio increases. The evaporation of axisymmetric drops on a fiber is studied with numerical simulations. For sufficiently large volumes, we evidence that the evap…
The present study experimentally and numerically investigates the evaporation and resultant patterns of dried deposits of aqueous colloidal sessile droplets, when the droplets are initially elevated to a high temperature before being placed on a substrate held at ambient temperature. The system is then released for natural evaporation without applying any external perturbation. Infrared thermography and optical profilometry were used as essential tools for interfacial temperature measurements and quantification of the coffee-ring dimensions, respectively. Initially, a significant temperature g…
The effect of evaporation on droplet sedimentation times is crucial for estimating the risk of infection from virus-containing airborne droplets. For droplet radii in the range 100 nm < R < 60 μm, evaporation can be described in the stagnant-flow approximation and is diffusion limited. Analytical equations are presented for the droplet evaporation rate, the time-dependent droplet size and the sedimentation time, including the significant effect of evaporation cooling. Evaporation makes the time for large droplets to sediment much longer and thus significantly increases the viral air load. Usin…

New exact solutions for the evaporation flux density of a small droplet on a flat horizontal substrate with a contact angle in the range of 135-180 degrees
We present a lattice-gas (generalised Ising) model for liquid droplets on solid surfaces. The time evolution in the model involves two processes: (i) Single-particle moves which are determined by a kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm. These incorporate into the model particle diffusion over the surface and within the droplets and also evaporation and condensation, i.e. the exchange of particles between droplets and the surrounding vapour. (ii) Larger-scale collective moves, modelling advective hydrodynamic fluid motion, determined by considering the dynamics predicted by a thin-film equation. The mo…
The evaporation of multi-component droplets is relevant to various applications but challenging to study due to the complex physicochemical dynamics. Recently, Li (2018) reported evaporation-triggered segregation in 1,2-hexanediol-water binary droplets. In this present work, we added 0.5 wt% silicone oil into the 1,2-hexanediol-water binary solution. This minute silicone oil concentration dramatically modifies the evaporation process as it triggers an early extraction of the 1,2-hexanediol from the mixture. Surprisingly, we observe that the segregation of 1,2-hexanediol forms plumes, rising up…

Watercolor or aquarelle is one of the oldest painting methods in which pigments suspended in an aqueous liquid are deposited over a substrate, typically an absorbing material such as paper. The physical processes which lead to pattern formation have not been studied in any depth, in spite of being closely related to flows in other contexts. Identifying and understanding these processes is of imperative importance to restore and preserve watercolor paintings. Here, we report an experimental study of the effect of the pigment concentration and paper humidity on the pattern formation derived from…
