We report extensive spectroscopic and differential V-band photometric observations of the 18.4-day detached double-lined eclipsing binary LV Her (F9V), which has the highest eccentricity (e = 0.613) among the systems with well-measured properties. We determine the absolute masses and radii of the components to be M1 = 1.193 +/- 0.010 M(Sun), M2 = 1.1698 +/- 0.0081 M(Sun), R1 = 1.358 +/- 0.012 R(Sun), and R2 = 1.313 +/- 0.011 R(Sun), with fractional errors of 0.9% or better. The effective temperatures are 6060 +/- 150 K and 6030 +/- 150 K, respectively, and the overall metallicity is estimated to be [m/H] = +0.08 +/- 0.21. A comparison with current stellar evolution models for this composition indicates an excellent fit for an age between 3.8 and 4.2 Gyr, with both stars being near the middle of their main-sequence lifetimes. Full integration of the equations for tidal evolution is consistent with the high eccentricity, and suggests the stars' spin axes are aligned with the orbital axis, and that their rotations should be pseudo-synchronized. The latter prediction is not quite in agreement with the measured projected rotational velocities.
Aims: We present a new updated study of the unique quintuple system of two eclipsing binaries, V994 Her. Methods: Based on new obtained photometric observations, we analysed the period variations of the two eclipsing pairs of V994 Her. Results: We found that the orbital period of the two eclipsing binaries around a common barycenter is about 2.9 yrs instead of the original period, which was reported as 6.3 yrs. Moreover, the system now seems to be close to coplanar (i ~ 84deg), and we also revised the individual masses of all four eclipsing components. The two eclipsing pairs show slow apsidal…
V501 Her is a well detached G3 eclipsing binary star with a period of 8.597687 days for which we have determined very accurate light and radial-velocity curves by using robotic telescopes. Results of these data indicate that the component stars have masses of 1.269 +/- 0.004 and 1.211 +/- 0.003 solar masses, radii of 2.001 +/- 0.003 and 1.511 +/- 0.003 solar radii, and temperatures of 5683 +/- 100K and 5720 +/- 100K, respectively. Comparison with the Yonsei-Yale series of evolutionary models results in good agreement at an age of about 5.1 Gyr for a somewhat metal rich composition. Those model…
Eclipsing binary DI Herculis (DI Her) is known to exhibit anomalously slow apsidal precession, below the rate predicted by the general relativity. Recent measurements of the Rossiter-McLauglin effect indicate that stellar spins in DI Her are almost orthogonal to the orbital angular momentum, which explains the anomalous precession in agreement with the earlier theoretical suggestion by Shakura. However, these measurements yield only the projections of the spin-orbit angles onto the sky plane, leaving the spin projection onto our line of sight unconstrained. Here we describe a method of determi…
Aims: We aim to derive the absolute parameters of the components of AD And, AL Cam, and V338 Her, interpret their orbital period changes and discuss their evolutionary status. Methods: New and complete multi-filter light curves of the eclipsing binaries AD And, AL Cam, and V338 Her were obtained and analysed with modern methods. Using all reliably observed times of minimum light, we examined orbital period irregularities using the least squares method. In addition, we acquired new spectroscopic observations during the secondary eclipses for AL Cam and V338 Her. Results: For AL Cam and V338 Her…
BVR light curves and radial velocities for the double-lined eclipsing binary V1135\,Her were obtained. The brighter component of V1135\,Her is a Cepheid variable with a pulsation period of 4.22433$\pm$0.00026 days. The orbital period of the system is about 39.99782$\pm$0.00233 days, which is the shortest value among the known Type\,II Cepheid binaries. The observed B, V, and R magnitudes were cleaned for the intrinsic variations of the primary star. The remaining light curves, consisting of eclipses and proximity effects, are obtained. Our analyses of the multi-colour light curves and radial v…
We analyze two sectors of TESS photometry of the nova-like cataclysmic variable star V533 Her. We detect a periodicity consistent with the binary orbital period and estimate a revised value of 3.53709(2) hr. We also detect a strong signal near a period of 3.8 h that we associate with positive superhumps. The superhump frequency varies over the TESS observations with the fractional difference between the superhump and orbital periods, $ε$, ranging between $0.055\le ε\le 0.080$. The superhump amplitude is correlated with its frequency such that the amplitude increases as $ε$ decreases. Positive …
The eclipsing binary DI Herculis garnered interest for several decades because of an apparent disagreement between the observed and calculated values of the apsidal precession rate. The problem was resolved when both stars were found to have high obliquities, but the reason for the high obliquities is unknown. Here we investigate the possibility that the obliquities are (or were) excited by an unseen tertiary star. Obliquity excitation in the current orbital configuration can be ruled out with existing data; any tertiary star that is sufficiently close or massive to overcome the strong spin-or…
Analyzing available photometry from Hipparcos, ASAS, Pi of the sky and Super WASP, we found that the system SY Phe is a detached eclipsing binary with similar components and orbital period about 5.27089 days. It has a slightly eccentric orbit, however the apsidal motion is probably very slow. The system undergoes an additional photometric variation on longer time scales superimposed on the eclipsing light curve. It also contains one distant component, hence the third light was also considered.
We observed the recently discovered eccentric eclipsing binary GSC 04052-01378 in order to improve the light curve parameters and to find further evidence of its probable high eccentricity and of apsidal motion. Furthermore, we propose a basic stellar model that fits very well the observations of our dataset and where the eccentricity is found to be e = 0.538(6), which corresponds to an high value among this group of binaries.
We report the very first analysis of 27 eclipsing binary systems with high eccentricities that sometimes reach up to 0.8. The orbital periods for these systems range from 1.4 to 37 days, and the median of the sample is 10.3 days. Star CzeV3392 (= UCAC4 623 022784), for example, currently is the eclipsing system with the highest eccentricity (e = 0.22) of stars with a period shorter than 1.5 days. We analysed the light curves of all 27 systems and obtained the physical parameters of both components, such as relative radii, inclinations, or relative luminosities. The most important parameters ap…
Next-generation synoptic photometric surveys will yield unprecedented (for the astronomical community) volumes of data and the processes of discovery and rare-object identification are, by necessity, becoming more autonomous. Such autonomous searches can be used to find objects of interest applicable to a wide range of outstanding problems in astronomy, and in this paper we present the methods and results of a largely autonomous search for highly eccentric detached eclipsing binary systems in the Machine-learned ASAS Classification Catalog. 106 detached eclipsing binaries with eccentricities g…
In 2002, 2004, and 2017 we conducted high precision CCD photometry observations of the eclipsing binary system AS~Cam. By the analysis of the light curves from 1967 to 2017 (our data + data from the literature) we obtained photometric elements of the system and found the change of the system's orbital eccentricity by $Δe=0.03 \pm 0.01$. This change can indicate that there is a third companion in the system in a highly inclined orbit with respect to the orbital plane of the central binary, and its gravitational influence may cause the discrepancy between the observed and theoretical apsidal mot…
In this study, we present CG Aur's photometric observations obtained in the observing seasons 2011 and 2012, the first available multi-colour light curves. Their shape indicates that the system is an Algol binary. The light curve analyses reveal that CG Aur is a detached binary system with an effective temperature difference between the components, approximately 1000 K. The first estimate of the absolute dimensions of the components indicated that the system locates on the main sequence in the HR diagram. The primary component is slightly evolved from the ZAMS.
We determined the orbits and stellar parameters of three eccentric eclipsing binaries by light curve solutions of their Kepler data. KIC 8111622 and KIC 10518735 undergo total eclipses while KIC 8196180 reveals partial eclipses. The target components are G and K stars, excluding the primary of KIC 8196180 which is early F star. KIC 8196180 reveals well-visible tidally-induced feature at periastron, i.e. it is an eclipsing heartbeat star. The characteristics of the observed periastron feature (shape, width and amplitude) confirm the theoretical predictions. There are additional out-of-eclipse v…
We present the apsidal motion and light-curve analyses of 21 eccentric eclipsing binaries located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Most of these systems have never been studied before, hence their orbital and physical properties as well as the apsidal motion parameters are given here for the first time. All the systems are of early spectral type, having orbital periods up to 4 days. The apsidal motion periods were derived to be from 7.2 to 200 yr (OGLE-SMC-ECL-2194 having the shortest apsidal period among known main-sequence systems). The orbital eccentricities are usually rather mild (median of…
DI Herculis is an eclipsing binary famous for a longstanding disagreement between theory and observation of the apsidal precession rate, which was resolved when both stars were found to be severely misaligned with the orbit. We used data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to refine our knowledge of the stellar obliquities and sharpen the comparison between the observed and theoretical precession rates. The TESS data show variations with a 1.07-day period, which we interpret as rotational modulation from starspots on the primary star. This interpretation is supported by the d…
We present the first modern analysis of two young, eclipsing binaries, EK Cep and HS Her, based on new, ground-based, CCD multicolour light curves as well as the TESS observations, radial velocity curves, and eclipse timing measurements. The orbital and stellar parameters of the stars are determined by Roche modelling, and their evolutionary status is examined using a grid of isochrones and evolutionary tracks. We find that HS Her is 25-32 Myr old and its components are on the zero-age main sequence; at the age of 16-20 Myr, the primary of EK Cep is also on the ZAMS, but its secondary is a pre…
Aims: The Danish 1.54-meter telescope at the La Silla observatory was used for photometric monitoring of selected eccentric eclipsing binaries located in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The new times of minima were derived for these systems, which are needed for accurate determination of the apsidal motion. Moreover, many new times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. Eighteen early-type eccentric-orbit eclipsing binaries were studied. Methods: Their (O-C) diagrams of minima timings were analysed and the parameters of the apsidal motion were obtained. The light cur…
We present an analysis of the apsidal motion and light curve parameters of 54 never-before-studied galactic Algol-type binaries. This is the first analysis of such a large sample of eccentric eclipsing binaries in our Galaxy, and has enabled us to identify several systems that are worthy of further study. Bringing together data from various databases and surveys, supplemented with new observations, we have been able to trace the long-term evolution of the eccentric orbit over durations extending back up to several decades. Our present study explores a rather different sample of stars to those …
KX Cancri is an eclipsing binary containing two G-type stars with an orbital period of 31.2 d and an eccentricity of 0.47. These qualities make it a promising candidate for a benchmark solar-type binary system. We analyse the first light curve of this system to have complete coverage of both primary and secondary eclipses, obtained using the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We augment these data with published radial velocities and measure the masses to be 1.134 +/- 0.003 Msun and 1.124 +/- 0.005 Msun and the radii to be 1.053 +/- 0.006 Rsun and 1.059 +/- 0.005 Rsun. A ratio of th…
We present a detailed study of KIC 2306740, an eccentric double-lined eclipsing binary system. Kepler satellite data were combined with spectroscopic data obtained with the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT). This allowed us to determine precise orbital and physical parameters of this relatively long period (P=10.3 d) and slightly eccentric, ($e=0.3$) binary system. The physical parameters have been determined as $M_1 = 1.194\pm0.008$ M$_{\odot}$, $M_2 = 1.078\pm0.007$ M$_{\odot}$, $R_1 = 1.682\pm0.004$ R$_{\odot}$, $R_2 = 1.226\pm0.005$ R$_{\odot}$, $L_1 = 2.8\pm0.4$ L$_{\odot}$, $L_2 = 1…
Aims: The analysis of combined photometry and spectroscopy of eccentric eclipsing binary systems facilitates the derivation of precise values for the parameters of the component stars and their orbits, thereby providing stringent tests of theories of stellar structure and evolution. In this paper two eccentric eclipsing binary systems, TYC 5378-1590-1 and TYC 8378-252-1, are studied in detail for the first time. Methods: Radial velocities were obtained using cross-correlation methods applied to mid-resolution spectra covering almost the entire orbital phase domains of these two systems. TESS p…
Aims: As part of our observational projects at the La Silla Danish 1.54-meter telescope, we aim to measure the precise times of minimum light for eccentric eclipsing binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud, needed for accurate determination of apsidal motion. Many new times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. Several new minima were also observed. Five early-type and eccentric-orbit eclipsing binaries: HV 982 (P = 5.34 d, e = 0.15), HV 2274 (5.73 d, 0.17), MACHO 78.6097.13 (3.11 d, 0.05), MACHO 81.8881.47 (3.88 d, 0.22), and MACHO 79.5377.76 (2.64 d, 0.06) were…
New CCD observations for thirteen eccentric eclipsing binaries from the Large Magellanic Cloud were carried out using the Danish 1.54-meter telescope located at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. These systems were observed for their times of minima and 56 new minima were obtained. These are needed for accurate determination of the apsidal motion. Besides that, in total 436 times of minima were derived from the photometric databases OGLE and MACHO. The (O-C) diagrams of minima timings for these B-type binaries were analysed and the parameters of the apsidal motion were computed. The light curv…
Eclipsing binary stars are rare and extremely valuable astrophysical laboratories that make possible precise determination of fundamental stellar parameters. Investigation of early-type chemically peculiar stars in eclipsing binaries provides important information for understanding the origin and evolutionary context of their anomalous surface chemistry. In this study we discuss observations of eclipse variability in six mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars monitored by the TESS satellite. These discoveries double the number of known eclipsing HgMn stars and yield several interesting objects requiri…
In a recent study, Lee et al. presented new photometric follow-up timing observations of the semi-detached binary system SZ Herculis and proposed the existence of two hierarchical cirumbinary companions. Based on the light-travel time effect, the two low-mass M-dwarf companions are found to orbit the binary pair on moderate to high eccentric orbits. The derived periods of these two companions are close to a 2:1 mean-motion orbital resonance. We have studied the stability of the system using the osculating orbital elements as presented by Lee et al. Results indicate an orbit-crossing architectu…
We investigate the formation mechanism for the observed nearly polar aligned (perpendicular to the binary orbital plane) debris ring around the eccentric orbit binary 99 Herculis. An initially inclined nonpolar debris ring or disc will not remain flat and will not evolve to a polar configuration, due to the effects of differential nodal precession that alter its flat structure. However, a gas disc with embedded well coupled solids around the eccentric binary may evolve to a polar configuration as a result of pressure forces that maintain the disc flatness and as a result of viscous dissipation…
We report new spectroscopic and photometric observations of the main-sequence, detached, eccentric, double-lined eclipsing binary V541 Cyg (P = 15.34 days, e = 0.468). Using these observations together with existing measurements we determine the component masses and radii to better than 1% precision: M1 = 2.335 +0.017/-0.013 MSun, M2 = 2.260 +0.016/-0.013 MSun, R1 = 1.859 +0.012/-0.009 RSun, and R2 = 1.808 +0.015/-0.013 RSun. The nearly identical B9.5 stars have estimated temperatures of 10650 +/- 200 K and 10350 +/- 200 K. A comparison of these properties with current stellar evolution models…
The eclipsing binaries are still important objects for our understanding of the universe. Especially these ones located within the more complex multiple systems can help us solving the problem of their origin and subsequent evolution of these higher order multiples. Photometry and spectroscopy spanning over more than 25 yr were used for the first complete analysis of the two bright triple systems, namely V348 And and V572 Per. The light curves in photometric filters were combined together with the radial velocities and analyzed simultaneously, yielding the precise physical parameters of the ec…
We determined the orbits and stellar parameters of three eccentric eclipsing binaries by light curve solutions of their Kepler data. KIC 10992733 and KIC 5632781 undergo total eclipses while KIC 10026136 reveals partial eclipses. The components of the targets are G and K stars. KIC 10992733 exhibited variations which were attributed to variable visibility of spot(s) on asynchronously rotating component. KIC 5632781 and KIC 1002613 reveal tidally-induced features at periastron, i.e. they might be considered as eclipsing heartbeat stars. The characteristics of the periastron features (shape, wid…
We report the identification of a new, long period detached eclipsing binary by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). Combining V-band photometry from ASAS-SN, ASAS and KELT, we constructed a light curve spanning 2006-2018. ASASSN-V J192543.72+402619.0 is an eccentric detached eclipsing binary with an orbital period of $P\sim7.3$ yr, a minimum orbital eccentricity of $e_{min}\sim0.2$ and a primary eclipse lasting $\sim160$ d. We also detect a secondary eclipse that is $\sim 0.6$ mag shallower. Multi-band photometry suggests that the more luminous component of the binary is an …
Pulsating stars in eclipsing binary systems are powerful tools to test stellar models. Binarity enables to constrain the pulsating component physical parameters, whose knowledge drastically improves the input physics for asteroseismic studies. The study of stellar oscillations allows us, in its turn, to improve our understanding of stellar interiors and evolution. The space mission CoRoT discovered several promising objects suitable for these studies, which have been photometrically observed with unprecedented accuracy, but needed spectroscopic follow-up. A promising target was the relatively …
We present an extensive study of 162 early-type binary systems located in the LMC galaxy that show apsidal motion and have never been studied before. For the ample systems, we performed light curve and apsidal motion modelling for the first time. These systems have a median orbital period of 2.2 days and typical periods of the apsidal motion were derived to be of the order of decades. We identified two record-breaking systems. The first, OGLE LMC-ECL-22613, shows the shortest known apsidal motion period among systems with main sequence components (6.6 years); it contains a third component with…
The analysis of eclipsing binaries containing non-radial pulsators allows: i) to combine two different and independent sources of information on the internal structure and evolutionary status of the components, and ii) to study the effects of tidal forces on pulsations. KIC 3858884 is a bright Kepler target whose light curve shows deep eclipses, complex pulsation patterns with pulsation frequencies typical of δ Sct, and a highly eccentric orbit. We present the result of the analysis of Kepler photometry and of high resolution phaseresolved spectroscopy. Spectroscopy yielded both the radial vel…
We found that the known spectroscopic binary and variable BU~CMi = HD65241 ($V$=6.4-6.7 mag, Sp~=~A0~V) is a quadruple doubly eclipsing 2+2 system. Both eclipsing binaries are detached systems moving in an eccentric orbits: pair "A" with the period $P_A$~=~$2^{d}.94$($e$=0.20) and pair "B" with the period $P_B$~=~$3^{d}.26$ ($e$=0.22). All four components have nearly equal sizes, temperatures and masses in the range $M$~=~3.1--3.4 M$_\odot$ and $A0$ spectra. We derived the mutual orbit of both pairs around the system barycenter with a period of 6.54 years and eccentricity $e$ = 0.71. We detect…
In this paper we compare the effects of different theories of gravitation on the apsidal motion of a sample of Eccentric Eclipsing Detached Binary stars. The comparison is performed by using the formalism of the Post-Newtonian parametrization to calculate the theoretical advance at periastron and compare it to the observed one, after having considered the effects of the structure and rotation of the involved stars. A variance analysis on the results of this comparison, shows that no significant difference can be found due to the effect of the different theories under test with respect to the s…
We present the discovery of NGTS J214358.5-380102, an eccentric M-dwarf binary discovered by the Next Generation Transit Survey. The system period of 7.618 days is greater than many known eclipsing M-dwarf binary systems. Its orbital eccentricity of $0.323^{+0.0014}_{-0.0037}$, is large relative to the period and semi-major axis of the binary. Global modelling of photometry and radial velocities indicate stellar masses of $M_A$=$0.426 ^{+0.0056}_{-0.0049}$, $M_B$=$0.455 ^{+0.0058}_{-0.0052}$ and stellar radii $R_A$=$0.461 ^{+0.038}_{-0.025}$ $R_B$=$0.411 ^{+0.027}_{-0.039}$, respectively. Comp…
The LAMOST spectra and $\it{Kepler}$ light curves are combined to investigate the detached eclipsing binary KIC 8098300, which shows the O'Connell effect caused by spot/facula modulation. The radial velocity (RV) measurements are derived by using the tomographic spectra disentangling technology. The mass ratio $q = K_1/K_2 = 0.812 \pm 0.007$, and the orbital semi-major axis $a\mathrm{\sin}i = 14.984 \pm 0.048\ R_\odot$ are obtained by fitting the RV curves. We optimize the binary model concerning the spot/facula activity with the code PHOEBE and obtain precise parameters of the orbit including…
Thirty-three eclipsing binaries were selected for an analysis from a huge database of observations made by the INTEGRAL/OMC camera. The photometric data were processed and analyzed, resulting in a first light-curve study of these neglected eclipsing binaries. The system CY Lac was discovered to be an eccentric one. In several systems from this sample even their orbital periods have been confirmed or modified. Due to missing spectroscopic study of these stars, further detailed analyses are still needed.
With 16-month Kepler data, 14 long-period (40 d - 265 d) eclipsing binaries on highly eccentric orbits (minimum e between 0.5 and 0.85) are recognized from their closely separated primary and secondary eclipses (Δt_I,II = 3 d - 10 d). These systems confirm the existence of a previously hinted binary population situated near a constant angular momentum track at P(1-e^2)^(3/2) ~ 15 d, close to the tidal circularization period P_circ. They may be presently migrating due to tidal dissipation and form a steady-state stream (~1% of stars) feeding the close-binary population (few percent of stars). I…
We report the discovery with $TESS$ of a third set of eclipses from V994 Herculis (TIC 424508303), previously only known as a doubly-eclipsing system. The key implication of this discovery and our analyses is that V994 Her is the second fully-characterized (2+2) + 2 sextuple system, in which all three binaries eclipse. In this work, we use a combination of ground-based observations and $TESS$ data to analyze the eclipses of binaries A and B in order to update the parameters of the inner quadruple's orbit (with a derived period of 1062 $\pm$ 2d). The eclipses of binary C that were detected in t…
V578 Mon is an eclipsing binary system in which both stars have masses above 10 Msun determined with an accuracy better than 3%. It is one of only five such massive eclipsing binaries known that also possess eccentric orbits and measured apsidal motions, thus making it an important benchmark for theoretical stellar evolution models. However, recently reported determinations of the radii of V578 Mon differ significantly from previously reported values. We reanalyze the published data for V578 Mon and trace the discrepancy to the use of an incorrect formulation for the stellar potentials in the …
We report the discovery of a $M=67\pm2~\mathrm{M_J}$ brown dwarf transiting the early M dwarf TOI-2119 on an eccentric orbit ($e=0.3362 \pm 0.0005$) at an orbital period of $7.200861 \pm 0.000005$ days. We confirm the brown dwarf nature of the transiting companion using a combination of ground-based and space-based photometry and high-precision velocimetry from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder. Detection of the secondary eclipse with TESS photometry enables a precise determination of the eccentricity and reveals the brown dwarf has a brightness temperature of $2100\pm80$ K, a value which is co…
We present the characterization of KIC 4142768, an eclipsing binary with two evolved A-type stars in an eccentric orbit with a period of 14 days. We measure the fundamental parameters of the two components ($M_1=2.05M_{\odot}, R_1=2.96R_{\odot}$ and $M_2=2.05M_{\odot}, R_2=2.51R_{\odot}$) by combining {\it Kepler} photometry and spectra from {\it Keck} HIRES. The measured surface rotation rates are only one-fifth of the pseudo-synchronous rate of the eccentric orbit. Fourier spectrum of the light curve reveals hybrid pulsations of $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus type, with pulsation frequencies at a…
Eclipsing binaries offer a unique opportunity to determine basic stellar properties. With the advent of wide-field camera and all-sky time-domain surveys, thousands of eclipsing binaries have been charted via light curve classification, yet their fundamental properties remain unexplored, mainly due to the extensive efforts needed for spectroscopic follow-ups. In this paper we present the discovery of a short period (P=0.313 days) double-lined M-dwarf eclipsing binary, CSSJ114804.3+255132/SDSSJ114804.35+255132.6, by cross-matching binary light curves from Catalina Sky Surveys and spectroscopica…
The evolution of multiple stellar systems can be driven by Kozai cycles and tidal friction (KCTF), which shrink the orbit of the inner binary. There is an interesting possibility that two close binaries on a common long-period orbit experience mutually-induced KCTF. We present the discovery of a possible new quadruple system composed of two unresolved eclipsing binaries (EBs), CzeV343 (V~13.5 mag). We obtained photometric observations of CzeV343 that completely cover the two orbital periods and we successfully model the light curves as the sum of two detached EBs. We provide confidence interva…
V455 Aur is a detached eclipsing binary containing two F-stars in a 3.15-d orbit with a small eccentricity. Its eclipses were discovered in data from the Hipparcos satellite and a spectroscopic orbit was obtained by Griffin (2001, 2013). Griffin found a long-term variation of the systemic velocity of the eclipsing system due to a third body in a highly eccentric orbit (e = 0.73) with a period of 4200 d. We have used these data, the light curve of V455 Aur from the TESS satellite, and the Gaia EDR3 parallax to determine the physical properties of the components of the system to high precision. …
V578 Mon is a system of two early B-type stars in the Rosette Nebula star-forming region (NGC 2244), and is one of only nine eclipsing binaries with component masses greater than 10 M\odot whose physical parameters have been determined with an accuracy of better than 3%. It is therefore a benchmark system for evolutionary and stellar structure models of newly formed massive stars. Combining our multi-band light curves spanning 40 yr with previous light curve data from the literature, we fit a model light curve that for the first time includes the effects of apsidal motion of the system. We mea…
In a recent study, Armstrong et al. presented an eclipsing binary star of about 6.2 h period with transit-like tertiary signals occurring every 204.2 d in the {\it Kepler} public data of KIC002856960 and proposed three possible hierarchical structures: (AB)b, (AB)C, and A(BC). We analyzed the {\it Kepler} light curve by including a third light source and one starspot on each binary component. The results represent that the close eclipsing pair is in a low-mass eccentric-orbit, detached configuration. Based on 123 eclipse timings calculated from the Wilson-Devinney binary model, a period study …
Eclipsing binaries are observed to have a range of eccentricities and spin-orbit misalignments (stellar obliquities). Whether such properties are primordial, or arise from post-formation dynamical interactions remains uncertain. This paper considers the scenario in which the binary is the inner component of a hierarchical triple stellar system, and derives the requirements that the tertiary companion must satisfy in order to raise the eccentricity and obliquity of the inner binary. Through numerical integrations of the secular octupole-order equations of motion of stellar triples, coupled with…
We present the first catalogue of eclipsing binaries in two MOA fields towards the Galactic bulge, in which over 8,000 candidates, mostly contact and semi-detached binaries of periods < 1 d, were identified. In this paper, the light curves of a small number of interesting candidates including eccentric binaries, binaries with noteworthy phase modulations and eclipsing RS CVn type stars are shown as examples. In addition, we identified three triple object candidates by detecting the light-travel-time effect in their eclipse time variation curves.
We present a photometric and light curve analysis of an eccentric eclipsing binary in the K2 Campaign 0 field that resides in Sh 2-252E, a young star cluster embedded in an H II region. We describe a spectroscopic investigation of the three brightest stars in the crowded aperture to identify which is the binary system. We find that none of these stars are components of the eclipsing binary system, which must be one of the fainter nearby stars. These bright cluster members all have remarkable spectra: Sh 2-252a (EPIC 202062176) is a B0.5 V star with razor sharp absorption lines, Sh 2-252b is a …
KIC 8569819 is an eclipsing binary star with an early F primary and G secondary in a 20.85-d eccentric orbit. The primary is a delta Sct - gamma Dor star pulsating in both p modes and g modes. Using 4 years of Kepler Mission photometric data we independently model the light curve using the traditional technique with the modelling code PHOEBE, and we study the orbital characteristics using the new frequency modulation (FM) technique. We show that both methods provide the equivalent orbital period, eccentricity and argument of periastron, thus illustrating and validating the FM technique. In the…
