We present a detailed study of KIC 2306740, an eccentric double-lined eclipsing binary system. Kepler satellite data were combined with spectroscopic data obtained with the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT). This allowed us to determine precise orbital and physical parameters of this relatively long period (P=10.3 d) and slightly eccentric, ($e=0.3$) binary system. The physical parameters have been determined as $M_1 = 1.194\pm0.008$ M$_{\odot}$, $M_2 = 1.078\pm0.007$ M$_{\odot}$, $R_1 = 1.682\pm0.004$ R$_{\odot}$, $R_2 = 1.226\pm0.005$ R$_{\odot}$, $L_1 = 2.8\pm0.4$ L$_{\odot}$, $L_2 = 1.8\pm0.2$ L$_{\odot}$ and orbital seperation $a = 26.20\pm0.04$ R$_{\odot}$ through simultaneous solutions of Kepler light curves and of the WHT radial velocity data. Binarity effects were extracted from the light curve in order to study intrinsic variations in the residuals. Five significant and more than 100~combination frequencies were detected. We modeled the binary system assuming non-conservative evolution models with the Cambridge STARS (TWIN) code and we show evolutionary tracks of the components in the $\log L - \log T$ plane, the $\log R - \log M$ plane and the $\log P - \rm age$ plane for both spin and orbital periods together with eccentricity $e$ and $\log R_1$. The model of the non-conservative processes in the code led the system to evolve to the observed system parameters in roughly $5.1 $ Gyr.
Compact Hierarchical Triples (CHT) are systems with the tertiary star orbiting the inner binary in an orbit shorter than 1000 days. CHT with an eclipsing binary as its inner binary can help us extract a multitude of information about all three stars in the system. In this study, we use independent observational techniques to estimate the orbital, stellar, and atmospheric parameters of two triple-lined CHT: BD+442258 and KIC06525196. We find that the masses of stars in BD+442258 are $1.011\pm0.029 M_{\odot}$, $0.941\pm0.033 M_{\odot}$, and $0.907\pm0.065 M_{\odot}$ while in KIC06525196 the esti…
We present the first binary modelling results for the pulsating eclipsing binary KIC 11285625, discovered by the Kepler mission. An automated method to disentangle the pulsation spectrum and the orbital variability in high quality light curves, was developed and applied. The goal was to obtain accurate orbital and component properties, in combination with essential information derived from spectroscopy. A binary model for KIC 11285625 was obtained, using a combined analysis of high-quality space-based Kepler light curves and ground-based high-resolution HERMES echelle spectra. The binary model…
KIC 6951642 has been reported as a candidate hybrid pulsator of type-$γ$ Doradus-$δ$ Scuti from observations of the first quarters of the Kepler mission. We aim to investigate the pulsating nature of KIC 6951642 and to search for the signature of rotation and/or activity in the light curves. We performed an iterative frequency search of both Fourier spectra, and searched for regular patterns in them. We applied spectrum synthesis to determine the atmospheric stellar parameters. Since KIC 6951642 was reported to belong to a spectroscopic binary system, we fitted the time delays derived from the…
KIC 1571511 is a 14d eclipsing binary (EB) in the Kepler dataset. The secondary of this EB is a very low mass star with a mass of 0.14136 +/- 0.00036 M_sun and a radius of 0.17831 +0.00051/-0.00062 R_sun (statistical errors only). The overall system parameters make KIC 1571511B an ideal "benchmark object": among the smallest, lightest and best-described stars known, smaller even than some known exoplanet. Currently available photometry encompasses only a small part of the total: future Kepler data releases promise to constrain many of the properties of KIC 1571511B to unprecedented level. Howe…
The purpose of this work is to extend a sample of accurately modeled, benchmark-grade eclipsing binaries with accurately determined masses and radii. We select four "well-behaved" Kepler binaries, KIC2306740, KIC4076952, KIC5193386 and KIC5288543, each with at least 8 double-lined spectra from the apogee instrument that is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys III and IV, and from the Hobby-Eberly High Resolution Spectrograph. We obtain masses and radii with uncertainties of 2.5% or less for all four systems. Three of these systems have orbital periods longer than 9 days, and thus populate an …
The nominal Kepler mission provided very high-precision photometric data. Using these data, interesting phenomena such as spots, and ``hump and spike'' features were observed in the light curves of some normal A and metallic lined A stars (Am stars). However, the connection between such phenomena and the chemical peculiarity of the Am stars is still unclear. In order to make progress on these issues, its important to collect high-resolution spectroscopic data to determine their fundamental parameters and individual chemical abundances. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic study of a sampl…
We present our results of a combined analysis of radial velocity and light curves of a double-lined spectroscopic and eclipsing binary KIC 09246715, observed photometrically by the $Kepler$ satellite, and spectroscopically with the OAO-1.88m telescope with the HIgh-Dispertion Echelle Spectrograph (HIDES). The target was claimed to be composed of two red giants, one of which is showing solar-like oscillations. We have found that the mass and radius of the primary are $M_1=2.169\pm0.024$ M$_\odot$ and $R_1=8.47\pm0.13$ R$_\odot$, and of the secondary: $M_2=2.143\pm0.025$ M$_\odot$ and $R_2=8.18\…
In this study, investigation of two double-lined binary stars KIC 5113146 and KIC 5111815 in NGC 6819 is presented based on both photometric and spectroscopic data. Simultaneous analysis of light and radial velocity curves was made and the absolute parameters of the systems' components were determined for the first time. We find that both systems have F-type main-sequence components. The masses and radii were found to be $M_1=1.29\pm0.02 M_{\odot}$, $R_{1}=1.47\pm0.03 R_{\odot}$ and $M_{2}=1.19\pm0.02 M_{\odot}$, $R_{2}=1.13\pm0.02 R_{\odot}$ for the primary and secondary components of KIC 511…
We present the absolute properties of the double-lined eclipsing binary KIC 6206751 exhibiting multiperiodic pulsations. The ${\it Kepler}$ light curve of this system was simultaneously solved with the radial-velocity data given by Matson et al. (2017). The results indicate that the binary star is a short-period semi-detached system with fundamental parameters of $M_1$ = 1.66$\pm$0.04 M$_\odot$, $M_2$ = 0.215$\pm$0.006 M$_\odot$, $R_1$ = 1.53$\pm$0.02 R$_\odot$, $R_2$ = 1.33$\pm$0.02 R$_\odot$, $L_1$ = 5.0$\pm$0.6 L$_\odot$, and $L_2$ = 0.96$\pm$ 0.09 L$_\odot$. We applied multiple frequency a…
We started a program to search for companions around hybrid $δ$ Sct/$γ$ Dor stars with the frequency modulation method using Kepler data. Our best candidate was KIC 5709664, where we could identify Fourier peaks with sidelobes, suggesting binary orbital motion. We determined the orbital parameters with the phase modulation method and took spectroscopic measurements to confirm unambiguously the binary nature with radial velocities. The spectra show that the object is a double-lined spectroscopic binary, and we determined the orbital solutions from the radial velocity curve fit. The parameters f…
Eclipsing binary systems with components that pulsate in gravity modes ($g$ modes) allow for simultaneous and independent constraints of the chemical mixing profiles of stars. We aim to assemble a sample of $g$-mode pulsators in detached eclipsing binaries with the purpose of finding good candidates for future evolutionary and asteroseismic modelling. In addition, we present a case study of the eclipsing binary KIC9850387, identified as our most promising candidate. We selected all of the detached eclipsing binaries in the Kepler eclipsing binary catalogue and performed a visual inspection to …
KIC 10417986 is a short orbital period (0.0737 d) ellipsoidal variable star with a δ Scuti and γ Doradus hybrid pulsations component discovered by Kepler. The ground-based spectroscopic observations were carried out in the winters of 2020 and 2021 to investigate the binary nature of this star. We derive the orbital parameters using the rvfit code with a result of K1 = 29.7 $\pm$ 1.5 km/s, γ = -18.7 $\pm$ 1.7 km/s, and confirm an orbital period of 0.84495 d instead of the result given by Kepler. The atmospheric parameters of the primary are determined by the synthetic spectra fitting technique …
Gamma Doradus and delta Scuti pulsators cover the transition region between low mass and massive main-sequence stars, and as such, are critical for testing stellar models. When they reside in binary systems, we can combine two independent methods to derive critical information, such as precise fundamental parameters to aid asteroseismic modelling. In the Kepler light curve of KIC10080943, clear signatures of gravity- and pressure-mode pulsations have been found. Ground-based spectroscopy revealed this target to be a double-lined binary system. We present the analysis of four years of Kepler ph…
There is a well-known stellar parameter discrepancy for late K and M dwarfs, in that the observed radii and temperatures are often respectively larger and cooler than predicted by theory by several percent. In an on-going effort to elucidate this issue, we examine the double-lined Kepler eclipsing binary star system KIC 8736245. We supplement the near-continuous 4-year Kepler light curve with ground-based multicolor photometry from Mount Laguna Observatory and spectroscopy from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. The binary has an edge-on, circular 5.07 day orbit with stellar masses equal to $0.987\pm…
Stellar structure and evolution can be studied in great detail by asteroseismic methods, provided data of high precision are available. We determine the effective temperature (Teff), surface gravity (log g), metallicity, and the projected rotational velocity (v sin i) of 44 Kepler asteroseismic targets using our high-resolution (R > 20,000) spectroscopic observations; these parameters will then be used to compute asteroseismic models of these stars and to interpret the Kepler light curves. We use the method of cross correlation to measure the radial velocity (RV) of our targets, while atmospher…

The internal structures and properties of oscillating red-giant stars can be accurately inferred through their global oscillation modes (asteroseismology). Based on 1460 days of Kepler observations we perform a thorough asteroseismic study to probe the stellar parameters and evolutionary stages of three red giants in eclipsing binary systems. We present the first detailed analysis of individual oscillation modes of the red-giant components of KIC 8410637, KIC5640750 and KIC9540226. We obtain estimates of their asteroseismic masses, radii, mean densities and logarithmic surface gravities by usi…
Binaries in double-lined spectroscopic systems provide a homogeneous set of stars. Differences of parameters, such as age or initial conditions, which otherwise would have strong impact on the stellar evolution, can be neglected. The observed differences are determined by the difference in stellar mass between the two components. The mass ratio can be determined with much higher accuracy than the actual stellar mass. In this work, we aim to study the eccentric binary system KIC9163796, whose two components are very close in mass and both are low-luminosity red-giant stars from four years of Ke…
KIC 7955301 is a hierarchical triple system with eclipse timing and depth variations discovered by the Kepler mission. It is composed of a non-eclipsing primary star at the bottom of the red giant branch on a 209-day orbit with a K/G-type main-sequence inner eclipsing binary, orbiting in 15.3 days. This system was noted for the large amplitude of its eclipse timing variations (4 hours), and the clear solar-like oscillations of the red-giant component, including p-modes of degree up to l=3 and mixed l=1 modes. The system is a single-lined spectroscopic triple. We perform a dynamical model by co…

The Kepler mission has provided a treasure trove of eclipsing binaries (EBs), observed at extremely high photometric precision, nearly continuously for several years. We are carrying out a survey of ~100 of these EBs to derive dynamical masses and radii with precisions of 3% or better. We use multiplexed near-infrared H band spectroscopy from the SDSS-III and -IV APOGEE instrument and optical spectroscopy from the HET High-Resolution Spectrograph to derive double-lined spectroscopic orbits and dynamical mass-ratios for the EB sample. This information is combined with Kepler photometry to deriv…
The asteroseismic and planetary studies, like all research related to stars, need precise and accurate stellar atmospheric parameters as input. We aim at deriving the effective temperature (Teff), the surface gravity (log g), the metallicity ([Fe/H]), the projected rotational velocity (v sin i) and the MK type for 169 F, G, K, and M-type Kepler targets which were observed spectroscopically from the ground with five different instruments. We use two different spectroscopic methods to analyse 189 high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise spectra acquired for the 169 stars. For 67 stars, the spectros…
The unparalleled photometric data obtained by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope has led to an improved understanding of stellar structure and evolution - in particular for solar-like oscillators in this context. Binary stars are fascinating objects. Because they were formed together, binary systems provide a set of two stars with very well constrained parameters. Those can be used to study properties and physical processes, such as the stellar rotation, dynamics and rotational mixing of elements and allows us to learn from the differences we find between the two components. In this work, we discus…
We analyze extensive BVR_cI_c time-series photometry and radial-velocity measurements for WOCS 40007 (Auner 259; KIC 5113053), a double-lined detached eclipsing binary and a member of the open cluster NGC 6819. Utilizing photometric observations from the 1-meter telescope at Mount Laguna Observatory and spectra from the WIYN 3.5-meter telescope, we measure precise and accurate masses (~1.6% uncertainty) and radii (~0.5%) for the binary components. In addition, we discover a third star orbiting the binary with a period greater than 3000 days using radial velocities and Kepler eclipse timings. B…
We present the analysis of an eccentric, partially eclipsing long-period ($P=19.23$ d) binary system KIC 9777062 that contains main sequence stars near the turnoff of the intermediate age open cluster NGC 6811. The primary is a metal-lined Am star with a possible convective blueshift to its radial velocities, and one star (probably the secondary) is likely to be a $γ$ Dor pulsator. The component masses are $1.603\pm0.006$(stat.)$\pm0.016$(sys.) and $1.419\pm0.003\pm0.008 M_\odot$, and the radii are $1.744\pm0.004\pm0.002$ and $1.544\pm0.002\pm0.002 R_\odot$. The isochrone ages of the stars are…
As part of our study of the old (~2.5 Gyr) open cluster NGC 6819 in the Kepler field, we present photometric (Kepler and ground-based BVRcIc) and spectroscopic observations of the detached eclipsing binary WOCS 24009 (Auner 665; KIC 5023948) with a short orbital period of 3.6 days. WOCS 24009 is a triple-lined system, and we verify that the brightest star is physically orbiting the eclipsing binary using radial velocities and eclipse timing variations. The eclipsing binary components have masses M_B =1.090+/-0.010 Msun and M_C =1.075+/-0.013 Msun, and radii R_B =1.095+/-0.007 Rsun and R_C =1.0…
