The Hunter-Saxton equation and the Gurevich-Zybin system are considered as two mutually non-equivalent representations of one and the same Whitham-type equation, and all their common solutions are obtained exactly.
We study the Whitham equations for the Camassa-Holm equation. The equations are neither strictly hyperbolic nor genuinely nonlinear. We are interested in the initial value problem of the Whitham equations. When the initial values are given by a step function, the Whitham solution is self-similar. When the initial values are given by a smooth function, the Whitham solution exists within a cusp in the x-t plane. On the boundary of the cusp, the Whitham equation matches the Burgers solution, which exists outside the cusp.
We review the theory of modulation equations or Whitham equations for the travelling wave solution of KdV. We then apply the Whitham modulation equations to describe the long-time asymptotics and small dispersion asymptotics of the KdV solution
We study the Whitham equations for the defocusing complex modified KdV (mKdV) equation. These Whitham equations are quasilinear hyperbolic equations and they describe the averaged dynamics of the rapid oscillations which appear in the solution of the mKdV equation when the dispersive parameter is small. The oscillations are referred to as dispersive shocks. The Whitham equations for the mKdV equation are neither strictly hyperbolic nor genuinely nonlinear. We are interested in the solutions of the Whitham equations when the initial values are given by a step function. We also compare the resul…
We study the Whitham equations for all the higher order KdV equations. The Whitham equations are neither strictly hyperbolic nor genuinely nonlinear. We are interested in the solution of the Whitham equations when the initial values are given by a step function.
Short-wave perturbations in a relaxing medium, governed by a special reduction of the Ostrovsky evolution equation, and later derived by Whitham, are studied using the gradient-holonomic integrability algorithm. The bi-Hamiltonicity and complete integrability of the corresponding dynamical system is stated and an infinite hierarchy of commuting to each other conservation laws of dispersive type are found. The well defined regularization of the model is constructed and its Lax type integrability is discussed. A generalized hydrodynamical Riemann type system is considered, infinite hierarchies o…
Based on the well-established theory of discrete conjugate nets in discrete differential geometry, we propose and examine discrete analogues of important objects and notions in the theory of semi-Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type. In particular, we present discrete counterparts of (generalised) hodograph equations, hyperelliptic integrals and associated cycles, characteristic speeds of Whitham type and (implicitly) the corresponding Whitham equations. By construction, the intimate relationship with integrable system theory is maintained in the discrete setting.
We consider the questions connected with the Hamiltonian properties of the Whitham equations in case of several spatial dimensions. An essential point of our approach here is a connection of the Hamiltonian structure of the Whitham system with the finite-dimensional Poisson bracket defined on the space of periodic or quasi-periodic solutions. From our point of view, this approach gives a possibility to construct the Hamiltonian structure of the Whitham equations under minimal requirements on the properties of the initial system. The Poisson bracket for the Whitham system can be considered here…
We study the Whitham equations for the fifth order KdV equation. The equations are neither strictly hyperbolic nor genuinely nonlinear. We are interested in the solution of the Whitham equations when the initial values are given by a step function. We classify the step like initial data into eight different types. We construct self-similar solutions for each type.
A simple construction of Whitham type hierarchies in all genera is suggested. Potentials of these hierarchies are written as integrals of hypergeometric type. Possible generalization for universal moduli space is also briefly discussed.
A large class of semi-Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type is interpreted as the equations governing families of critical points of functions obeying the classical linear Darboux equations for conjugate nets. The distinguished role of the Euler-Poisson-Darboux equations and associated Lauricella-type functions is emphasised. In particular, it is shown that the classical g-phase Whitham equations for the KdV and NLS equations are obtained via a g-fold iterated Darboux-type transformation generated by appropriate Lauricella functions.
The Laplacian growth (the Hele-Shaw problem) of multi-connected domains in the case of zero surface tension is proven to be equivalent to an integrable systems of Whitham equations known in soliton theory. The Whitham equations describe slowly modulated periodic solutions of integrable hierarchies of nonlinear differential equations. Through this connection the Laplacian growth is understood as a flow in the moduli space of Riemann surfaces.
The semi-classical Korteweg-deVries equation for step-like data is considered with a small parameter in front of the highest derivative. Using perturbation analysis Whitham theory is constructed to higher order. This allows the order one phase and the complete leading order solution to be obtained; the results are confirmed by extensive numerical calculations.
Whitham modulation theory for certain two-dimensional evolution equations of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) type is presented. Three specific examples are considered in detail: the KP equation, the two-dimensional Benjamin-Ono (2DBO) equation and a modified KP (m2KP) equation. A unified derivation is also provided. In the case of the m2KP equation, the corresponding Whitham modulation system exhibits features different from the other two. The approach presented here does not require integrability of the original evolution equation. Indeed, while the KP equation is known to be a completely integra…
We survey some topics involving the Whitham equations, concentrating on the role of the Baker Akhiezer function in averaging. Some connections to symplectic geometry and Seiberg-Witten theory are indicated.
Whitham theory of modulations is developed for periodic waves described by nonlinear wave equations integrable by the inverse scattering transform method associated with $2\times2$ matrix or second order scalar spectral problems. The theory is illustrated by derivation of the Whitham equations for perturbed Korteweg-de Vries equation and nonlinear Schrödinger equation with linear damping.
A scheme for solving Whitham hierarchies satisfying a special class of string equations is presented. The tau-function of the corresponding solutions is obtained and the differential expressions of the underlying Virasoro constraints are characterized. Illustrative examples of exact solutions of Whitham hierarchies are derived and applications to conformal maps dynamics are indicated.
This paper reconsiders finite variable reductions of the universal Whitham hierarchy of genus zero in the perspective of dispersionless Hirota equations. In the case of one-variable reduction, dispersionless Hirota equations turn out to be a powerful tool for understanding the mechanism of reduction. All relevant equations describing the reduction (Löwner-type equations and diagonal hydrodynamic equations) can be thereby derived and justified in a unified manner. The case of multi-variable reductions is not so straightforward. Nevertheless, the reduction procedure can be formulated in a genera…
We consider the deformation of the Whitham system for the non-linear Klein-Gordon equation having the Lorentz-invariant form. Using the Lagrangian formalism of the initial system we obtain the first non-trivial correction to the Whitham system in the Lorentz-invariant approach.
A new description of the universal Whitham hierarchy in terms of a factorization problem in the Lie group of canonical transformations is provided. This scheme allows us to give a natural description of dressing transformations, string equations and additional symmetries for the Whitham hierarchy. We show how to dress any given solution and prove that any solution of the hierarchy may be undressed, and therefore comes from a factorization of a canonical transformation. A particulary important function, related to the $τ$-function, appears as a potential of the hierarchy. We introduce a class o…
New travelling wave solutions to the Fornberg-Whitham equation are investigated. They are characterized by two parameters. The expresssions for the periodic and solitary wave solutions are obtained.
The goal of this paper is to identify the universal Whitham hierarchy of genus zero with a dispersionless limit of the multi-component KP hierarchy. To this end, the multi-component KP hierarchy is (re)formulated to depend on several discrete variables called ``charges''. These discrete variables play the role of lattice coordinates in underlying Toda field equations. A multi-component version of the so called differential Fay identity are derived from the Hirota equations of the $τ$-function of this ``charged'' multi-component KP hierarchy. These multi-component differential Fay identities ha…
The genus-1 KP-Whitham system is derived for both variants of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation (namely, the KPI and KPII equations). The basic properties of the KP-Whitham system, including symmetries, exact reductions, and its possible complete integrability, together with the appropriate generalization of the one-dimensional Riemann problem for the Korteweg-deVries equation are discussed. Finally, the KP-Whitham system is used to study the linear stability properties of the genus-1 solutions of the KPI and KPII equations; it is shown that all genus-1 solutions of KPI are linearly uns…
We survey some topics involving the Whitham equations, concentrating on the role of the product of the wave function and its adjoint in averaging and in producing Cauchy kernels and differentials on Riemann surfaces. There are also some new results.
A general scheme for analyzing reductions of Whitham hierarchies is presented. It is based on a method for determining the $S$-function by means of a system of first order partial differential equations. Compatibility systems of differential equations characterizing both reductions and hodograph solutions of Whitham hierarchies are obtained. The method is illustrated by exhibiting solutions of integrable models such as the dispersionless Toda equation (heavenly equation) and the generalized Benney system.
It is shown that the dispersionless scalar integrable hierarchies and, in general, the universal Whitham hierarchy are nothing but classes of integrable deformations of quasiconformal mappings on the plane. Examples of deformations of quasiconformal mappings associated with explicit solutions of the dispersionless KP hierarchy are presented.
In our paper we construct a new infinite family of symmetries of the Whitham equations (averaged Korteveg-de-Vries equation). In contrast with the ordinary hydrodynamic-type flows these symmetries are nonhomogeneous (i.e. they act nontrivially at the constant solutions), are nonlocal, explicitly depend upon space and time coordinates and form a noncommutative algebra, isomorphic to the algebra of the polynomial vector fields in the complex plane (Virasoro algebra with the zero central charge).
The Whitham modulation equations for the parameters of a periodic solution are derived using the generalized Lagrangian approach for the case of damped Benjamin-Ono equation. The structure of the dispersive shock in internal wave in deep water is considered by this method.
The infinite-genus limit of the KdV-Whitham equations is derived. The limit involves special scaling for the associated spectral surface such that the integrated density of states remains finite as $N \to \infty$ (the thermodynamic type limit). The limiting integro-differential system describes slow evolution of the density of states and can be regarded as the kinetic equation for a soliton gas.
In this paper, we employ the bifurcation method of dynamical systems to investigate the exact travelling wave solutions for the Fornberg-Whitham equation. The implicit expression for solitons is given. The explicit expressions for peakons and periodic cusp wave solutions are also obtained. Further, we show that the limits of soliton solutions and periodic cusp wave solutions are peakons.
We study the Cauchy problem for the Whitham modulation equations for monotone increasing smooth initial data. The Whitham equations are a collection of one-dimensional quasi-linear hyperbolic systems. This collection of systems is enumerated by the genus g=0,1,2,... of the corresponding hyperelliptic Riemann surface. Each of these systems can be integrated by the so called hodograph transform introduced by Tsarev. A key step in the integration process is the solution of the Tsarev linear overdetermined system. For each $g>0$, we construct the unique solution of the Tsarev system, which matches…
We continue the analysis of the spectral curve of the normal random matrix ensemble, introduced in an earlier paper. Evolution of the full quantum curve is given in terms of compatibility equations of independent flows. The semiclassical limit of these flows is expressed through canonical differential forms of the spectral curve. We also prove that the semiclassical limit of the evolution equations is equivalent to Whitham hierarchy.
We consider the special type of the field-theoretical Symplectic structures called weakly nonlocal. The structures of this type are in particular very common for the integrable systems like KdV or NLS. We introduce here the special class of the weakly nonlocal Symplectic structures which we call the weakly nonlocal Symplectic structures of Hydrodynamic Type. We investigate then the connection of such structures with the Whitham averaging method and propose the procedure of "averaging" of the weakly nonlocal Symplectic structures. The averaging procedure gives the weakly nonlocal Symplectic Str…
We derive the dispersionless Hirota equations of the universal Whitham hierarchy from the kernel formula approach proposed by Carroll and Kodama. Besides, we also verify the associativity equations in this hierarchy from the dispersionless Hirota equations and give a realization of the associative algebra with structure constants expressed in terms of the residue formulas.
We present a model of optical communication system for high-bit-rate data transmission in the nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) format over transoceanic distance. The system operates in a small group velocity dispersion regime, and the model equation is given by the Whitham equations describing the slow modulation of multi-phase wavetrains of the (defocusing) nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. The model equation is of hyperbolic type, and certain initial NRZ pulse with phase modulation develops a shock. We then show how one can obtain a global solution by choosing an appropriate Riemann surface on wh…
The main goal of this paper is to put together: a) the Whitham theory applicable to slowly modulated $N$-phase nonlinear wave solutions to the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (fNLS) equation, and b) the Riemann-Hilbert Problem approach to particular solutions of the fNLS in the semiclassical (small dispersion) limit that develop slowly modulated $N$-phase nonlinear wave in the process of evolution. Both approaches have their own merits and limitations. Understanding of the interrelations between them could prove beneficial for a broad range of problems involving the semiclassical fNLS.
We obtain variational formulas for holomorphic objects on Riemann surfaces with respect to arbitrary local coordinates on the moduli space of complex structures. These formulas are written in terms of a canonical object on the moduli space which corresponds to the pairing between the space of quadratic differentials and the tangent space to the moduli space. This canonical object satisfies certain commutation relations which appear to be the same as the ones that emerged in the integrability theory of Whitham type hierarchies. Driven by this observation, we develop the theory of Whitham type h…
In this paper, by using bifurcation method, we successfully find the Fornberg-Whitham equation has a type of traveling wave solutions called kink-like wave solutions and antikinklike wave solutions. They are defined on some semifinal bounded domains and possess properties of kink waves and anti-kink waves. Their implicit expressions are obtained. For some concrete data, the graphs of the implicit functions are displayed, and the numerical simulation is made. The results show that our theoretical analysis agrees with the numerical simulation.
The two- and four-dimensional invariant reductions are studied in detail. The well defined regularization of the model is constructed and its Lax type integrability is discussed.
Reductions of the KP-Whitham system, namely the (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic system of five equations that describes the slow modulations of periodic solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, are studied. Specifically, the soliton and harmonic wave limits of the KP-Whitham system are considered, which give rise in each case to a four-component (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic system. It is shown that a suitable change of dependent variables splits the resulting four-component systems into two parts: (i) a decoupled, independent two-component system comprised of the dispersionless …
The author's recent results on an asymptotic description of the Schlesinger equation are generalized to the JMMS equation. As in the case of the Schlesinger equation, the JMMS equation is reformulated to include a small parameter $ε$. By the method of multiscale analysis, the isomonodromic problem is approximated by slow modulations of an isospectral problem. A modulation equation of this slow dynamics is proposed, and shown to possess a number of properties similar to the Seiberg- Witten solutions of low energy supersymmetric gauge theories.
This work concerns soliton-type numerical solutions for two Whitham-Boussinesq-type models. Solitary waves are computed using an iterative Newton-type and continuation methods with high accuracy. The method allow us to compute solitary waves with large amplitude and speed close to the singular limit. These solitary waves are set as initial data and overtaking collisions are considered for both systems. We show that both system satisfy the geometric Lax-categorization of two-soliton collision. Numerical evidences indicate that one of the systems also admits an algebraic Lax-categorization based…
The behavior of solutions of the finite-genus Whitham equations for the weak dispersion limit of the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation is investigated analytically and numerically for piecewise-constant initial data. In particular, the dynamics of constant-amplitude initial conditions with one or more frequency jumps (i.e., piecewise linear phase) are considered. It is shown analytically and numerically that, for finite times, regions of arbitrarily high genus can be produced; asymptotically with time, however, the solution can be divided into expanding regions which are either of genu…
The Laplacian growth problem in the limit of zero surface tension is proved to be equivalent to finding a particular solution to the dispersionless Toda lattice hierarchy. The hierarchical times are harmonic moments of the growing domain. The Laplacian growth equation itself is the quasiclassical version of the string equation that selects the solution to the hierarchy.
In 1967, Whitham proposed a simplified surface water-wave model which combined the full linear dispersion relation of the full Euler equations with a weakly linear approximation. The equation he postulated which is now called the Whitham equation has recently been extended to a system of equations allowing for bi-directional propagation of surface waves. A number of different two-way systems have been put forward, and even though they are similar from a modeling point of view, these systems have very different mathematical properties. In the current work, we review some of the existing fully d…
It has been known since the beginning of this century that isomonodromic problems --- typically the Painlevé transcendents --- in a suitable asymptotic region look like a kind of ``modulation'' of isospectral problem. This connection between isomonodromic and isospectral problems is reconsidered here in the light of recent studies related to the Seiberg-Witten solutions of $N = 2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. A general machinary is illustrated in a typical isomonodromic problem, namely the Schlesinger equation, which is reformulated to include a small parameter $ε$. In the small-$ε$ limit, s…
