Reductions of the KP-Whitham system, namely the (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic system of five equations that describes the slow modulations of periodic solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, are studied. Specifically, the soliton and harmonic wave limits of the KP-Whitham system are considered, which give rise in each case to a four-component (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic system. It is shown that a suitable change of dependent variables splits the resulting four-component systems into two parts: (i) a decoupled, independent two-component system comprised of the dispersionless KP equation, (ii) an auxiliary, two-component system coupled to the mean flow equations, which describes either the evolution of a linear wave or a soliton propagating on top of the mean flow. The integrability of both four-component systems is then demonstrated by applying the Haantjes tensor test as well as the method of hydrodynamic reductions. Various exact reductions of these systems are then presented that correspond to concrete physical scenarios.
Short-wave perturbations in a relaxing medium, governed by a special reduction of the Ostrovsky evolution equation, and later derived by Whitham, are studied using the gradient-holonomic integrability algorithm. The bi-Hamiltonicity and complete integrability of the corresponding dynamical system is stated and an infinite hierarchy of commuting to each other conservation laws of dispersive type are found. The two- and four-dimensional invariant reductions are studied in detail. The well defined regularization of the model is constructed and its Lax type integrability is discussed.

We consider the deformation of the Whitham systems in the case when the initial system is close to linear one. It appears that the deformation procedure should be modified in this special case to make all the constructions stable in the linear limit. We suggest here the special deformation scheme which gives the stable deformation of the Whitham system for the almost linear initial systems.
The genus-1 KP-Whitham system is derived for both variants of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation (namely, the KPI and KPII equations). The basic properties of the KP-Whitham system, including symmetries, exact reductions, and its possible complete integrability, together with the appropriate generalization of the one-dimensional Riemann problem for the Korteweg-deVries equation are discussed. Finally, the KP-Whitham system is used to study the linear stability properties of the genus-1 solutions of the KPI and KPII equations; it is shown that all genus-1 solutions of KPI are linearly uns…
A scheme for solving Whitham hierarchies satisfying a special class of string equations is presented. The tau-function of the corresponding solutions is obtained and the differential expressions of the underlying Virasoro constraints are characterized. Illustrative examples of exact solutions of Whitham hierarchies are derived and applications to conformal maps dynamics are indicated.
We consider the special type of the field-theoretical Symplectic structures called weakly nonlocal. The structures of this type are in particular very common for the integrable systems like KdV or NLS. We introduce here the special class of the weakly nonlocal Symplectic structures which we call the weakly nonlocal Symplectic structures of Hydrodynamic Type. We investigate then the connection of such structures with the Whitham averaging method and propose the procedure of "averaging" of the weakly nonlocal Symplectic structures. The averaging procedure gives the weakly nonlocal Symplectic Str…
Whitham modulation theory for certain two-dimensional evolution equations of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) type is presented. Three specific examples are considered in detail: the KP equation, the two-dimensional Benjamin-Ono (2DBO) equation and a modified KP (m2KP) equation. A unified derivation is also provided. In the case of the m2KP equation, the corresponding Whitham modulation system exhibits features different from the other two. The approach presented here does not require integrability of the original evolution equation. Indeed, while the KP equation is known to be a completely integra…
The infinite-genus limit of the KdV-Whitham equations is derived. The limit involves special scaling for the associated spectral surface such that the integrated density of states remains finite as $N \to \infty$ (the thermodynamic type limit). The limiting integro-differential system describes slow evolution of the density of states and can be regarded as the kinetic equation for a soliton gas.
The particular case of the integrable two component (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamical type systems, which generalises the so-called Hamiltonian subcase, is considered. The associated system in involution is integrated in a parametric form. A dispersionless Lax formulation is found.
We study the moduli space of the spectral curves $y^2=W'(z)^2+f(z)$ which characterize the vacua of $\mathcal{N}=1$ U(n) supersymmetric gauge theories with an adjoint Higgs field and a polynomial tree level potential $W(z)$. It is shown that there is a direct way to associate a spectral density and a prepotential functional to these spectral curves. The integrable structure of the Whitham equations is used to determine the spectral curves from their moduli. An alternative characterization of the spectral curves in terms of critical points of a family of polynomial solutions $\mathbb{W}$ to Eul…
Obstacles to integrability in perturbed evolution equations are overcome by allowing higher-order terms in the expansion of the solution to depend explicitly on time and position. With a special expansion algorithm, obstacles vanish explicitly for single-waves zero-order approximations, and exponentially, outside the wave interaction-region, for multiple-waves. Simple expressions for their asymptotic effects on the solution are obtained.
Characteristic Lie rings for Toda type 2+1 dimensional lattices are defined. Some properties of these rings are studied. Infinite sequence of special kind modules are introduced. It is proved that for known integrable lattices these modules are finitely generated. Classification algorithm based on this observation is briefly discussed.
This paper discusses the algorithms and implementations of three Mathematica packages for the study of integrability and the computation of closed-form solutions of nonlinear polynomial PDEs. The first package, PainleveTest.m, symbolically performs the Painleve integrability test. The second package, PDESpecialSolutions.m, computes exact solutions expressible in hyperbolic or elliptic functions. The third package, PDERecursionOperator.m, generates and tests recursion operators.
Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type occur in a wide range of applications including fluid dynamics, the Whitham averaging procedure and the theory of Frobenius manifolds. In 1+1 dimensions, the requirement of the integrability of such systems by the generalised hodograph transform implies that integrable Hamiltonians depend on a certain number of arbitrary functions of two variables. On the contrary, in 2+1 dimensions the requirement of the integrability by the method of hydrodynamic reductions, which is a natural analogue of the generalised hodograph transform in higher dimensions, leads…
An invariant differential-geometric approach to the integrability of (2+1)-dimensional systems of hydrodynamic type u_t+A(u)u_x+B(u)u_y=0 is developed. It is proved that the existence of special solutions known as `double waves' is equivalent to the diagonalizability of an arbitrary matrix of the two-parameter family (kE+A)^{-1}(lE+B). Since the diagonalizability can be effectively verified by differential-geometric means, this provides a simple necessary condition for integrability.
The designable integrability(DI) of the variable coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation (VCNLSE) is first introduced by construction of an explicit transformation which maps VCNLSE to the usual nonlinear Schrödinger equation(NLSE). One novel feature of VCNLSE with DI is that its coefficients can be designed artificially and analytically by using transformation. A special example between nonautonomous NLSE and NLSE is given here. Further, the optical super-lattice potentials (or periodic potentials) and multi-well potentials are designed, which are two kinds of important potential in Bose-E…
In this paper we study the equation $$ w^{(4)} = 5 w" (w^2 - w') + 5 w (w')^2 - w^5 + (λz + α)w + γ, $$ which is one of the higher-order Painlevé equations (i.e., equations in the polynomial class having the Painlevé property). Like the classical Painlevé equations, this equation admits a Hamiltonian formulation, Bäcklund transformations and families of rational and special functions. We prove that this equation considered as a Hamiltonian system with parameters $γ/λ= 3 k$, $γ/λ= 3 k - 1$, $k \in \mathbb{Z}$, is not integrable in Liouville sense by means of rational first integrals. To do that…
Macroscopic dynamics of soliton gases can be analytically described by the thermodynamic limit of the Whitham equations, yielding an integro-differential kinetic equation for the density of states. Under a delta-functional ansatz, the kinetic equation for soliton gas reduces to a non-diagonalisable system of hydrodynamic type whose matrix consists of several 2x2 Jordan blocks. Here we demonstrate the integrability of this system by showing that it possesses a hierarchy of commuting hydrodynamic flows and can be solved by an extension of the generalised hodograph method. Our approach is a gener…
It is shown that commutator identities on associative algebras generate solutions of linearized integrable equations. Next, a special kind of the dressing procedure is suggested that in a special class of integral operators enables to associate to such commutator identity both nonlinear equation and its Lax pair. Thus problem of construction of new integrable pde's reduces to construction of commutator identities on associative algebras.
Using diffeomorphism group vector fields on $\mathbb{C}$-multiplied tori and the related Lie-algebraic structures, we study multi-dimensional dispersionless integrable systems that describe conformal structure generating equations of mathematical physics. An interesting modification of the devised Lie-algebraic approach subject to spatial-dimensional invariance and meromorphicity of the related differential-geometric structures is described and applied in proving complete integrability of some conformal structure generating equations. As examples, we analyze the Einstein-Weyl metric equation, …
A notion of a particular integrability is introduced when two operators commute on a subspace of the space where they act. Particular integrals for one-dimensional (quasi)-exactly-solvable Schroedinger operators and Calogero-Sutherland Hamiltonians for all roots are found. In the classical case some special trajectories for which the corresponding particular constants of motion appear are indicated.
Oblique propagation of magnetohydrodynamic waves in warm plasmas is described by a modified vector derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation, if charge separation in Poisson's equation and the displacement current in Ampere's law are properly taken into account. This modified equation cannot be reduced to the standard derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation and hence its possible integrability and related properties need to be established afresh. Indeed, the new equation is shown to be integrable by the existence of a bi--Hamiltonian structure, which yields the recursion operator needed to…
The nonlinear equations describing all the nonsingular pencils of metrics of constant Riemannian curvature are derived and the integrability of these nonlinear equations by the method of inverse scattering problem is proved. It is proved that all the nonsingular pairs of compatible metrics of constant Riemannian curvature are described by special integrable reductions of nonlinear equations defining orthogonal curvilinear coordinate systems in the spaces of constant curvature.
In this article we review the basic concepts regarding quantum integrability. Special emphasis is given on the algebraic content of integrable models. The associated algebras are essentially described by the Yang-Baxter and boundary Yang-Baxter equations depending on the choice of boundary conditions. The relation between the aforementioned equations and the braid group is briefly discussed. A short review on quantum groups as well as the quantum inverse scattering method (algebraic Bethe ansatz) is also presented.
We demonstrate that the dispersionless $\bar\partial$-dressing method developed before for general heavenly equation is applicable to the $4+4$ and $2N+2N$ - dimensional symmetric heavenly type equations. We introduce generating relation and derive the two-form defining the potential and equation for it. We develop the dressing scheme, calculate a class of special solutions and demonstrate that reduction from $4+4$-dimensional equation to four-dimensional general heavenly equation can be effectively performed on the level of the dressing data. We consider also the extension of the proposed sch…
We consider here special Poisson brackets given by the "averaging" of local multi-dimensional Poisson brackets in the Whitham method. For the brackets of this kind it is natural to ask about their canonical forms, which can be obtained after transformations preserving the "physical meaning" of the field variables. We show here that the averaged bracket can always be written in the canonical form after a transformation of "Hydrodynamic Type" in the case of absence of annihilators of initial bracket. However, in general case the situation is more complicated. As we show here, in more general cas…
Based on the gradient-holonomic algorithm we analyze the integrability property of the generalized hydrodynamical Riemann type equation $%D_{t}^{N}u=0$ for arbitrary $N\in \mathbb{Z}_{+}.$ The infinite hierarchies of polynomial and non-polynomial conservation laws, both dispersive and dispersionless are constructed. Special attention is paid to the cases $%N=2,3$ and N=4 for which the conservation laws, Lax type representations and bi-Hamiltonian structures are analyzed in detail. We also show that the case N=2 is equivalent to a generalized Hunter-Saxton dynamical system, whose integrability …
We consider integrable Matrix Product States (MPS) in integrable spin chains and show that they correspond to "operator valued" solutions of the so-called twisted Boundary Yang-Baxter (or reflection) equation. We argue that the integrability condition is equivalent to a new linear intertwiner relation, which we call the "square root relation", because it involves half of the steps of the reflection equation. It is then shown that the square root relation leads to the full Boundary Yang-Baxter equations. We provide explicit solutions in a number of cases characterized by special symmetries. The…
Delay-differential equations are functional differential equations that involve shifts and derivatives with respect to a single independent variable. Some integrability candidates in this class have been identified by various means. For three of these equations we consider their elliptic and soliton-type solutions. Using Hirota's bilinear method, we find that two of our equations possess three-soliton-type solutions.
This contributed conference proceeding reviews some results about a system of a few identical particles with spin trapped in one-dimensional potentials and experiencing two-body interactions. The focus is on how symmetry, integrability, and solvability depend on the trap shape, two-body interaction, the number of particles, and the number of spin components. A series of comments are presented that characterize the minimal symmetries possible for a composite system constructed from interacting single particles, with special focus on the contact interaction. For five and more particles with inte…
Non-holonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called "squared solutions" (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to perturbed models with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV equation. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV hierarchy with generic self-consistent sources are analyzed. This allows one to formulate a set of conditions on the perturbation ter…
Peakons are special weak solutions of a class of nonlinear partial differential equations modelling non-linear phenomena such as the breakdown of regularity and the onset of shocks. We show that the natural concept of weak solutions in the case of the modified Camassa-Holm equation studied in this paper is dictated by the distributional compatibility of its Lax pair and, as a result, it differs from the one proposed and used in the literature based on the concept of weak solutions used for equations of the Burgers type. Subsequently, we give a complete construction of peakon solutions satisfyi…
This article is devoted to the partial difference quad-graph equations that can be represented in the form $φ(u(i+1,j),u(i+1,j+1))=ψ(u(i,j),u(i,j+1))$, where the map $(w,z) \rightarrow (φ(w,z),ψ(w,z))$ is injective. The transformation $v(i,j)=φ(u(i,j),u(i,j+1))$ relates any of such equations to a quad-graph equation. It is proved that this transformation maps Darboux integrable equations of the above form into Darboux integrable equations again and decreases the orders of the transformed integrals by one in the $j$-direction. As an application of this fact, the Darboux integrable equations pos…
In this letter, the integrability aspects of a generalized Fisher type equation with modified diffusion in (1+1) and (2+1) dimensions are studied by carrying out a singularity structure and symmetry analysis. It is shown that the Painlevé property exists only for a special choice of the parameter ($m=2$). A Bäcklund transformation is shown to give rise to the linearizing transformation to the linear heat equation for this case ($m=2$). A Lie symmetry analysis also picks out the same case ($m=2$) as the only system among this class as having nontrivial infinite dimensional Lie algebra of symmet…
The modified Camassa-Holm equation (also called FORQ) is one of numerous $cousins$ of the Camassa-Holm equation possessing non-smoth solitons ($peakons$) as special solutions. The peakon sector of solutions is not uniquely defined: in one peakon sector (dissapative) the Sobolev $H^1$ norm is not preserved, in the other sector (conservative), introduced in [2], the time evolution of peakons leaves the $H^1$ norm invariant. In this Letter, it is shown that the conservative peakon equations of the modified Camassa-Holm can be given an appropriate Poisson structure relative to which the equations …
Localized soliton-like solutions to a $(2+1)$-dimensional hydro-dynamical evolution equation are studied numerically. The equation is so-called Williams-Yamagata-Flierl equation, which governs geostrophic fluid in a certain parameter range. Although the equation does not have an integrable structure in the ordinary sense, we find there exist shape-keeping solutions with very long life in a special background flow and an initial condition. The stability of the localization at the fusion process of two soliton-like objects is also investigated. As for the indicator of the long-term stability of …
The dynamics of nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems is dominated by the onset of patterns and Fisher equation is considered to be a prototype of such diffusive equations. Here we investigate the integrability properties of a generalized Fisher equation in both (1+1) and (2+1) dimensions. A Painlevé singularity structure analysis singles out a special case ($m=2$) as integrable. More interestingly, a Bäcklund transformation is shown to give rise to a linearizing transformation for the integrable case. A Lie symmetry analysis again separates out the same $m=2$ case as the integrable one and hen…
n this paper we formulate necessary conditions for the integrability in the Jacobi sense of Newton equations $\ddot \vq=-\vF(\vq)$, where $\vq\in\C^n$ and all components of $\vF$ are polynomial and homogeneous of the same degree $l$. These conditions are derived from an analysis of the differential Galois group of the variational equations along special particular solutions of the Newton equations. We show that, taking all admissible particular solutions, we restrict considerably the set of Newton's equations satisfying the necessary conditions for the integrability. Moreover, we apply the obt…
The study of higher-dimensional black holes is a subject which has recently attracted a vast interest. Perhaps one of the most surprising discoveries is a realization that the properties of higher-dimensional black holes with the spherical horizon topology and described by the Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metrics are very similar to the properties of the well known four-dimensional Kerr metric. This remarkable result stems from the existence of a single object called the principal tensor. In our review we discuss explicit and hidden symmetries of higher-dimensional black holes. We start with the overview of…
