We investigate phenomenologically viable four- and five-stack MSSM D-brane quivers which exhibit realistic fermion mass hierarchies. In our analysis, the mass hierarchies arise either from higher order terms containing the VEV's of SM singlets or from D-instanton effects, where the latter utilizes either family splitting or a factorizable Yukawa matrix. Extending the systematic bottom-up analysis of arXiv:0905.3379, we present the only four-stack quiver with a semi-realistic Yukawa texture. Investigation of five-stack MSSM models reveals many more quivers with analogous Yukawa textures, as well as a few examples which exhibit three different mass scales for the up-quarks, down-quarks, and electrons. Potential problems in this class of quivers are the presence of U(1) instantons, which might lead to undesired effects, such as R-parity violating couplings, and the presence of dimension 5 operators that could lead to rapid proton decay. We present a five-stack setup which overcomes all of these problems and exhibits three different mass scales for the up-quarks, down-quarks and electrons.
We analyze the problem of the hierarchy of masses and mixings in orientifold realizations of the Standard Model. We find bottom-up brane configurations that can generate such hierarchies.
We review two systematic bottom-up analyses of MSSM quivers recently performed by the authors. We extend the analysis of arXiv:0905.3379 by including constraints arising from proton decay via dimension 5 operators and present all four-stack quivers in the Madrid embedding which satisfy this additional constraint. Furthermore, we investigate and make precise the interplay between mass hierarchies obtained via factorizable Yukawa textures and the presence of dimension 5 proton decay operators in MSSM orientifold compactifications. We discuss this issue in a five-stack quiver, first presented in …
Motivated by the necessity of discrete Z_N symmetries in the MSSM to insure baryon stability, we study the origin of discrete gauge symmetries from open string sector U(1)'s in orientifolds based on rational conformal field theory. By means of an explicit construction, we find an integral basis for the couplings of axions and U(1) factors for all simple current MIPFs and orientifolds of all 168 Gepner models, a total of 32990 distinct cases. We discuss how the presence of discrete symmetries surviving as a subgroup of broken U(1)'s can be derived using this basis. We apply this procedure to mo…
We construct the first globally consistent semi-realistic Type I string vacua on an elliptically fibered manifold where the zero modes of the Euclidean D1-instanton sector allow for the generation of non-perturbative Majorana masses of an intermediate scale. In another class of global models, a D1-brane instanton can generate a Polonyi-type superpotential breaking supersymmetry at an exponentially suppressed scale.
Recently it has been shown that string instanton effects may give rise to neutrino Majorana masses in certain classes of semi-realistic string compactifications. In this paper we make a systematic search for supersymmetric MSSM-like Type II Gepner orientifold constructions admitting boundary states associated with instantons giving rise to neutrino Majorana masses and other L- and/or B-violating operators. We analyze the zero mode structure of D-brane instantons on general type II orientifold compactifications, and show that only instantons with O(1) symmetry can have just the two zero modes r…
We investigate the general question of implementing a chiral MSSM like D-brane sector in Type IIB orientifold models with complete moduli stabilisation via F-terms induced by fluxes and space-time instantons, respectively gaugino condensates. The prototype examples are the KKLT and the so-called large volume compactifications. We show that the ansatz of first stabilising all moduli via F-terms and then introducing the Standard Model module is misleading, as a chiral sector notoriously influences the structure of non-perturbative effects and induces a D-term potential. Focusing for concreteness…
Type IIA orientifold constructions with intersecting D6-branes and their IIB duals in terms of magnetized D9/D7-branes constitute one of the most promising avenues for the construction of semirealistic MSSM-like compactifications. One generic problem with these constructions is, that there are many Yukawa couplings, which vanish due to additional U(1) symmetries in the theory. In this paper we consider a number of such settings and study, under what conditions stringy instanton effects can give rise to non-perturbative contributions to the Yukawa couplings, so that all perturbatively forbidden…
These lecture notes give a short introduction of the derivation of the supersymmetric standard model on the Z6-orientifold as published in hep-th/0404055. Untwisted and twisted cycles are constructed and one specific model is discussed in more detail.
A complete analysis of orientifold compactifications involving Gepner models that are free fields (k=1,2) is performed. A set of tadpole solutions is found that are variants of a single chiral spectrum. The vacua found have the property that different families have different U(1) charges so that one family cannot obtain masses in perturbation theory. Its masses must come from instantons, allowing for a hierarchy of masses. The phenomenological aspects of such vacua are analyzed.
We study the effects of adding RR, NS and metric fluxes on a T^6/(Ω(-1)^{F_L} I_3) Type IIA orientifold. By using the effective flux-induced superpotential we obtain Minkowski or AdS vacua with broken or unbroken supersymmetry. In the Minkowski case some combinations of real moduli remain undetermined, whereas all can be stabilized in the AdS solutions. Many flux parameters are available which are unconstrained by RR tadpole cancellation conditions allowing to locate the minima at large volume and small dilaton. We also find that in AdS supersymmetric vacua with metric fluxes, the overall flux…
We perform a systematic analysis of globally consistent D-brane quivers which realize the MSSM, and analyze them with respect to their Yukawa couplings. Often, desired couplings are perturbatively forbidden due to the presence of global U(1) symmetries. We investigate the conditions under which D-brane instantons will induce these missing couplings without generating other phenomenological drawbacks, such as R-parity violating couplings or a mu-term which is too large. Furthermore, we systematically analyze which quivers allow for a mechanism that can account for the small neutrino masses and …
We construct a four-generation MSSM with rank-4 Yukawa matrices from intersecting D6 branes on a T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2) orientifold. The Yukawa matrices obtained provide an example of Flavor Democracy (FD), where the Yukawa couplings are all nearly equal. Mass hierarchies may then be generated by slight perturbations away from FD. We find that it is possible to obtain hierarchical masses for the quarks and leptons of each generation and mixings between them. In addition, the tree-level gauge couplings are unified at the string scale. Finally, we also construct similar models with one, two, and three …
We investigate the interplay between the string scale and phenomenological scales in orientifold compactifications. Specifically, we discuss in generality the tension that often arises in accounting for neutrino masses, Yukawa couplings, and a mu-term of the correct order and show that it often constrains the string scale M_s. The discussion focuses on two scenarios where, (1) the observed order of the neutrino masses are accounted for by a D-instanton induced "stringy" Weinberg operator, or (2) effectively via the type I seesaw mechanism with an instanton induced Majorana mass term. In both s…
The MSSM can arise as an orientifold of a pyramid-like quiver in the context of intersecting D-branes. Here we consider quiver realizations of the MSSM which can emerge at the bottom of a duality cascade. We classify all possible minimal ways this can be done by allowing only one extra node. It turns out that this requires extending the geometry of the pyramid to an octahedron. The MSSM at the bottom of the cascade arises in one of two possible ways, with the extra node disappearing either via Higgsing or confinement. Remarkably, the quiver of the Higgsing scenario turns out to be nothing but …
Using instanton effects, we discuss the problem of fermion mass hierarchies in an MSSM-like Type IIA orientifolded model with U(3)xSp(1)xU(1)xU(1) gauge symmetry obtained from intersecting D6-branes. In the corresponding four-stack quiver, the different scales of the generated superpotential couplings offer a partial solution to fermion mass hierarchies. Using the known data with neutrino masses m_{v_τ}\lesssim 2 eV, we give the magnitudes of the relevant scales.
Warped compactifications with significant warping provide one of the few known mechanisms for naturally generating large hierarchies of physical scales. We demonstrate that this mechanism is realizable in string theory, and give examples involving orientifold compactifications of IIB string theory and F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau four-folds. In each case, the hierarchy of scales is fixed by a choice of RR and NS fluxes in the compact manifold. Our solutions involve compactifications of the Klebanov-Strassler gravity dual to a confining N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory, and the hierar…
A fourth generation of Standard Model (SM) fermions is usually considered unlikely due to constraints from direct searches, electroweak precision measurements, and perturbative unitarity. We show that fermion mass textures consistent with all constraints may be obtained naturally in a model with four generations constructed from intersecting D6 branes on a T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2) orientifold. The Yukawa matrices of the model are rank 2, so that only the third- and fourth-generation fermions obtain masses at the trilinear level. The first two generations obtain masses via higher-order couplings and are…
We analyze the phenomenology of a set of minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) soft terms inspired by flux-induced supersymmetry (SUSY)-breaking in Type IIB string orientifolds. The scheme is extremely constrained with essentially only two free mass parameters: a parameter M, which sets the scale of soft terms, and the mu parameter. After imposing consistent radiative electro-weak symmetry breaking (EWSB) the model depends upon one mass parameter (say, M). In spite of being so constrained one finds consistency with EWSB conditions. We demonstrate that those conditions have two solutions…
We propose the gravitino dark matter in the gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario. The mass hierarchies between the gravitino and other superparticles can be achieved by the nontrivial Kähler metric of the supersymmetry breaking field. As a concrete model, we consider the five-dimensional supergravity model in which moduli are stabilized, and then one of the moduli induces the slow-roll inflation. It is found that the relic abundance of the gravitino and the Higgs boson mass reside in the allowed range without a severe fine-tuning.
We review some of the features of Type IIA compactifications in the presence of fluxes. In particular, the case of $T^6/(Ω(-1)^{F_L} σ)$ orientifolds with RR, NS and metric fluxes is considered. This has revealed to possess remarkable properties such as vacua with all the closed string moduli stabilized, null or negative contributions to the RR tadpoles or supersymmetry on the branes enforced by the closed string background. In this way, Type IIA compactifications with non trivial fluxes seem to constitute a new window into the building of semi-realistic models in String Theory.
We demonstrate the existence of an extra nonanomalous U(1) gauge symmetry in a three-generation Pati-Salam model constructed with intersecting D6-branes in Type IIA string theory on a T^6/(Z_2 \times Z_2) orientifold. This extra U(1) forbids all dimension-4, 5, and 6 operators which mediate proton decay in the MSSM. Moreover, this results in the effective promotion of baryon and lepton number to local gauge symmetries, which can potentially result in leptophobic and leptophilic $Z'$ bosons observable at the LHC. Furthermore, it is not necessary to invoke R-parity to forbid the dimension-4 oper…
We argue that the Standard Model quiver can be embedded into compact Calabi-Yau geometries through orientifolded D3-branes at del Pezzo singularities $\mathrm{dP}_n$ with $n\geq 5$ in a framework including moduli stabilisation. To illustrate our approach, we explicitly construct a local $\mathrm{dP}_{5}$ model via a combination of Higgsing and orientifolding. This procedure reduces the original $\mathrm{dP}_{5}$ quiver gauge theory to the Left-Right symmetric model with three families of quarks and leptons as well as a Higgs sector to further break the symmetries to the Standard Model gauge gr…
In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), the scale $M_{SUSY}$ of soft supersymmetry breaking is usually {\em assumed} to be of the order of the electroweak scale. We reconsider here the possibility of treating $M_{SUSY}$ as a dynamical variable. Its expectation value should be determined by minimizing the vacuum energy, after including MSSM quantum corrections. We point out the crucial role of the cosmological term for a dynamical generation of the desired hierarchies $m_Z, M_{SUSY} << M_P$. Inspired by four-dimensional superstring models, we also consider the Yukawa couplings as d…
This thesis contains an introductory chapter on orbifolds. The following chapter explains the foundations of orientifolds. Chapters 4-7 present own research. In chapter 4 we quantize open strings with linear boundary conditions, as they show up in electro-magnetic fields. We quantize the zero-modes for toroidal compactifications, too. As an application we calculate the commutator of the coordinate fields in the case of general constant Neveu-Schwarz U(1)-field strengths. Thereby we confirm previous results on non-commutativity of open string theories in Neveu-Schwarz backgrounds. Chapter 5 rev…
We study the presence of abelian discrete symmetries in globally consistent orientifold compactifications based on rational conformal field theory. We extend previous work [1] by allowing the discrete symmetries to be a linear combination of U(1) gauge factors of the visible as well as the hidden sector. This more general ansatz significantly increases the probability of finding a discrete symmetry in the low energy effective action. Applied to globally consistent MSSM-like Gepner constructions we find multiple models that allow for matter parity or Baryon triality.
We construct four dimensional three generation non-supersymmetric $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ intersecting D6-brane models with $ν_R$\rq{s}. At three stacks we find exactly the MSSM chiral fermion matter spectrum. At 4-, 5-stacks we find models with the massless fermion spectrum of the N=1 Standard Model and massive exotic non-chiral matter; these models flow also to only the SM. At 8-stacks we find MSSM-like models, with minimal massless exotics, made from two different N=1 sectors. Exotic triplet masses put a lower bound on the string scale of $2.79/2.89 \times 10^6$ GeV for a Hig…
We consider realizations of GUT models in F-theory. Adopting a bottom up approach, the assumption that the dynamics of the GUT model can in principle decouple from Planck scale physics leads to a surprisingly predictive framework. An internal U(1) hypercharge flux Higgses the GUT group directly to the MSSM or to a flipped GUT model, a mechanism unavailable in heterotic models. This new ingredient automatically addresses a number of puzzles present in traditional GUT models. The internal U(1) hyperflux allows us to solve the doublet-triplet splitting problem, and explains the qualitative featur…
In F-theory GUT constructions Yukawa couplings necessarily take place at the intersection of three matter curves. For generic geometric configurations this gives rise to problematic Yukawa couplings unable to reproduce the observed hierarchies. We point out that if the U(1)_{B-L}/U(1)_Y flux breaking the SO(10)/SU(5) GUT symmetry is allowed to go through pairs of matter curves with the same GUT representation, the quark/lepton content is redistributed in such a way that all quark and leptons are allowed to have hierarchical Yukawas. This reshuffling of fermions is quite unique and is particula…
