On the Length of Critical Orbits of Stable Quadratic Polynomials

A Note on Stable Quadratic Polynomials over Fields of Characteristic Two

Dual Nature of Orbits of the Divide-or-Choose 2 Rule: A Quadratic Collatz-type Recursion

We obtain a complete characterization of all orbits of a quadratic Collatz-type recursion called the divide-or-choose-2 rule. Each orbit either ends in a cycle whose period depends on the initial value or it goes to infinity. We specify which initial values generate periodic orbits, and also show that all other initial values generate orbits that go to infinity.

Finite orbit points for sets of quadratic polynomials

Let $S=\{x^2+c_1, x^2+c_2,\dots, x^2+c_s\}$ be a set of quadratic polynomials with rational coefficients, and let $P$ be a rational basepoint. We classify the pairs $(S,P)$ for which $P$ has finite orbit for $S$, assuming that the maximum period length for each individual polynomial is at most three (conjectured by Poonen). In particular, under these hypotheses we prove that if $s\geq4$, then there are no points $P$ with finite orbit for $S$. Moreover, we use this perspective to formulate an analog of the Morton-Silverman Conjecture for sets of rational functions.

The critical orbit structure of quadratic polynomials in $\mathbb{Z}_p$

We study the forward orbit of the critical point for polynomials of the form $f_c=z^2+c$ defined over $\mathbb{Z}_p$. Hubbard trees capture the dynamical behavior for such maps with finite critical orbit in $\mathbb{C}$. We suggest a notion of Hubbard trees in the non-Archimedean setting, and describe the possible structures that arise for polynomials in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. As an example, we take a closer look at the dynamics of $f_c$ for $c\in\mathbb{Z}_3$.

Stability of ideal lattices from quadratic number fields

We study semi-stable ideal lattices coming from real quadratic number fields. Specifically, we demonstrate infinite families of semi-stable and unstable ideal lattices of trace type, establishing explicit conditions on the canonical basis of an ideal that ensure stability; in particular, our result implies that an ideal lattice of trace type coming from a real quadratic field is semi-stable with positive probability. We also briefly discuss the connection between stability and well-roundedness of Euclidean lattices.

Bounded Orbits of Quadratic Collatz-type Recursions

We characterize all bounded orbits of two similar Collatz-type quadratic mappings of the set of non-negative integers. In one case, where cycles of all possible lengths may occur, an orbit is bounded if and only if it reaches a cycle. For the other map we prove that every bounded orbit must reach 0 (in particular, there are no cycles).

Orbital carriers and inheritance in discrete-time quadratic dynamics

Explicit formulas for {\sl orbital carriers} of periods $4$, $5$, and $6$ are reported for discrete-time quadratic dynamics. A systematic investigation of {\sl orbital inheritance} for periods as high as $k\leq 12$ is also reported. Dynamics of a quasi-quadratic map

We consider the map X defined on the rational numbers given by x --> x * ceil(x), where ceil(x) denotes the smallest integer greater than or equal to x, and study the problem of finding, for each rational, the smallest number of iterations of X that eventually sends it into an integer. The density of prime divisors in the arithmetic dynamics of quadratic polynomials

We consider integer recurrences of the form a_n = f(a_{n-1}), where f is a quadratic polynomial with integer coefficients. We show, for four infinite families of f, that the set of primes dividing at least one term of such a sequence must have density zero, regardless of choice of a_0. The proof relies on tools from group theory and probability theory to develop a zero-density criterion in terms of arithmetic properties of the forward orbit of the critical point of f.
