Symmetries and solutions of the Painleve IV equation are presented in an alternative framework which provides the bridge between the Hamiltonian formalism and the symmetric Painleve IV equation. This approach originates from a method developed in the setting of pseudo-differential Lax formalism describing AKNS hierarchy with the Darboux-Backlund and Miura transformations.
In the Hamiltonian formalism the Darboux-Backlund transformations are introduced as maps between solutions of the Hamilton equations corresponding to two allowed values of Hamiltonian's discrete parameter. The action of the generators of the extended affine Weyl group of the $A_2$ root system is realized in terms of three "square-roots" of such Darboux-Backlund transformations defined on a multiplet of solutions of the Hamilton equations.
We consider the symmetric q-Painlevé equations derived from the birational representation of affine Weyl groups by applying the projective reduction and construct the hypergeometric solutions. Moreover, we discuss continuous limits of the symmetric q-Painlevé equations to Painlevé equations together with their hypergeometric solutions.
A mixed symmetric Painleve III - V model which describes a hybrid of both equations is defined and obtained by successive self-similarity and Dirac Lagrange multiplier reductions from an integrable 4-boson hierarchy.
We show that \a < 0, \b > 0, \g=\d=0 Painleve III equation arises as a zero-curvature condition in the Belinskii-Zakharov inverse-scattering formulation for Bianchi cosmological models. For special values of the parameters this Painleve III equation becomes the dynamical equation for Bianchi I, II, VI_0 and VII_0 models.
Painleve transcendents are usually considered as complex functions of a complex variable, but in applications it is often the real cases that are of interest. Under a reasonable assumption (concerning the behavior of a dynamical system associated with Painleve IV, as discussed in a recent paper), we give a number of results towards a classification of the real solutions of Painleve IV (or, more precisely, symmetric Painleve IV), according to their asymptotic behavior and singularities. We show the existence of globally nonsingular real solutions of symmetric Painleve IV for arbitrary nonzero v…
We address the question of whether integrable models allow for PT-symmetric deformations which preserve their intgrability. For this purpose we carry out the Painleve test for PT-symmetric deformations of Burgers and the Korteweg-De Vries equation. We find that the former equation allows for infinitely many deformations which pass the Painleve test. For a specific deformation we prove the convergence of the Painleve expansion and thus establish the Painleve property for these models, which are therefore thought to be integrable. The Korteweg-De Vries equation does not allow for deformations wh…
The 8-parameter elliptic Sakai difference Painlevé equation admits a Lax formulation. We show that a suitable specialization of the Lax equation gives rise to the time-independent Schrödinger equation for the $BC_1$ 8-parameter 'relativistic' Calogero-Moser Hamiltonian due to van Diejen. This amounts to a generalization of previous results concerning the Painlevé-Calogero correspondence to the highest level in the two hierarchies.
The extension of Painlevé equations to noncommutative spaces has been considering extensively in the theory of integrable systems and it is also interesting to explore some remarkable aspects of these equations such as Painlevé property, Lax representation, Darboux transformation and their connection to well know integrable equations. This paper is devoted to the Lax formulation, Darboux transformation and Quasideterminant solution of noncommutative Painlevé second equation which is recently introduced by V. Retakh and V. Rubtsov.
Schlesinger transformations are algebraic transformations of a Fuchsian system that preserve its monodromy representation and act on the characteristic indices of the system by integral shifts. One of the important reasons to study such transformations is the relationship between Schlesinger transformations and discrete Painlevé equations; this is also the main theme behind our work. We derive \emph{discrete Schlesinger evolution equations} describing discrete dynamical systems generated by elementary Schlesinger transformations and give their discrete Hamiltonian description w.r.t.~the standa…
Unstable separatrix solutions for the first and second Painlevé transcendents are studied both numerically and analytically. For a fixed initial condition, say $y(0)=0$, there is a discrete set of initial slopes $y'(0)=b_n$ that give rise to separatrix solutions. Similarly, for a fixed initial slope, say $y'(0)= 0$, there is a discrete set of initial values $y(0)=c_n$ that give rise to separatrix solutions. For Painlevé I the large-$n$ asymptotic behavior of $b_n$ is $b_n\sim B_{\rm I}n^{3/5}$ and that of $c_n$ is $c_n\sim C_{\rm I}n^{2/ 5}$, and for Painlevé II the large-$n$ asymptotic behavi…
Equivalence is established between a special class of Painleve VI equations parametrized by a conformal dimension $μ$, time dependent Euler top equations, isomonodromic deformations and three-dimensional Frobenius manifolds. The isomodromic tau function and solutions of the Euler top equations are explicitly constructed in terms of Wronskian solutions of the 2-vector 1-constrained symplectic Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (CKP) hierarchy by means of Grassmannian formulation. These Wronskian solutions give rational solutions of the Painleve VI equation for $μ=1,2,{...} $.
In this article non-abelian version of quantum Painlevé II equation is presented with Its quasideterminant solutions has been derived by using the Darboux transformations. This non-abelian quantum Painlevé II equation may be considered as a specific case of its purely noncommutatie analogue presented by V. Retakh and V. Rubtsov . In these computations the quantum Painlevé II symmetric form with commutation relations presented by H. Nagoya are applied to derive Nonabelian quantum Painlevé II equation and a new commutation relation between variable $z$ and the solution $ f(z)$ such as $ z f - f …
We use methods from dynamical systems to study the fourth Painleve equation PIV. Our starting point is the symmetric form of PIV, to which the Poincare compactification is applied. The motion on the sphere at infinity can be completely characterized. There are fourteen fixed points, which are classified into three different types. Generic orbits of the full system are curves from one of four asymptotically unstable points to one of four asymptotically stable points, with the set of allowed transitions depending on the values of the parameters. This allows us to give a qualitative description o…
Although the solutions of Painlevé equations are transcendental in the sense that they cannot be expressed in terms of known elementary functions, there do exist rational solutions for specialized values of the equation parameters. A very successful approach in the study of rational solutions to Painlevé equations involves the reformulation of these scalar equations into a symmetric system of coupled, Riccati-like equations known as dressing chains. Periodic dressing chains are known to be equivalent to the $A_N$-Painlevé system, first described by Noumi and Yamada. The Noumi-Yamada system, in…
We study polynomials that are orthogonal with respect to a varying quartic weight \exp(-N(x^2/2+tx^4/4)) for t<0, where the orthogonality takes place on certain contours in the complex plane. Inspired by developments in 2D quantum gravity, Fokas, Its, and Kitaev, showed that there exists a critical value for t around which the asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients are described in terms of exactly specified solutions of the Painleve I equation. In this paper, we present an alternative and more direct proof of this result by means of the Deift/Zhou steepest descent analysis of the Riemann-…
We show that symmetric polynomials previously introduced by the author satisfy a certain differential equation. After a change of variables, it can be written as a non-stationary Schrödinger equation with elliptic potential, which is closely related to the Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov--Bernard equation and to the canonical quantization of the Painlevé VI equation. In a subsequent paper, this will be used to construct a four-dimensional lattice of tau functions for Painlevé VI.

Resurgent transseries have recently been shown to be a very powerful construction in order to completely describe nonperturbative phenomena in both matrix models and topological or minimal strings. These solutions encode the full nonperturbative content of a given gauge or string theory, where resurgence relates every (generalized) multi-instanton sector to each other via large-order analysis. The Stokes phase is the adequate gauge theory phase where an 't Hooft large N expansion exists and where resurgent transseries are most simply constructed. This paper addresses the nonperturbative study …
We consider the singular linear statistic of the Laguerre unitary ensemble consisting of the sum of the reciprocal of the eigenvalues. It is observed that the exponential generating function for this statistic can be written as a Toeplitz determinant with entries given in terms of particular $K$ Bessel functions. Earlier studies have identified the same determinant, but with the $K$ Bessel functions replaced by $I$ Bessel functions, as relating to the hard edge scaling limit of a generalized gap probability for the Laguerre unitary ensemble, in the case of non-negative integer Laguerre paramet…
We present {\it symmetric Hamiltonians} for the degenerate Garnier systems in two variables. For these symmetric Hamiltonians, we make the symmetry and holomorphy conditions, and we also make a generalization of these systems involving symmetry and holomorphy conditions inductively. We also show the confluence process among each system by taking the coupling confluence process of the Painlevé systems.
The standard $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimer is a linearly-coupled two-site discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with one site losing and the other one gaining energy at the same rate. We show that despite gain and loss, the standard $\mathcal{PT}$-dimer is a Hamiltonian system. We also produce a Lagrangian formulation for the dimer.
The sigma form of the Painlev{é} VI equation contains four arbitrary parameters and generically the solutions can be said to be genuinely ``nonlinear'' because they do not satisfy linear differential equations of finite order. However, when there are certain restrictions on the four parameters there exist one parameter families of solutions which do satisfy (Fuchsian) differential equations of finite order. We here study this phenomena of Fuchsian solutions to the Painlev{é} equation with a focus on the particular PVI equation which is satisfied by the diagonal correlation function C(N,N) of t…
Using octonions, more specifically, using a 4 x 4 matrix representation of octonions obtained with the help of algebraic properties of quaternions, we obtain the fully symmetric Maxwell's equations (Maxwell's equations with electric and magnetic charges and currents which is invariant under duality transformations).
We study the dispersionless version of the recently introduced constrained Toda hierarchy. Like the Toda lattice itself, it admits three equivalent formulations: the formulation in terms of Lax equations, the formulation of the Zakharov-Shabat type and the formulation through the generating equation for the dispersionless limit of logarithm of the tau-function. We show that the dispersionless constrained Toda hierarchy describes conformal maps of reflection-symmetric planar domains to the exterior of the unit disc. We also find finite-dimensional reductions of the hierarchy and show that they …
We present a first-order symmetric hyperbolic system in the Ashtekar formulation of general relativity for vacuum spacetime. We add terms from constraint equations to the evolution equations with appropriate combinations, which is the same technique used by Iriondo, Leguizamón and Reula [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 4732 (1997)]. However our system is different from theirs in the points that we primarily use Hermiticity of a characteristic matrix of the system to characterize our system "symmetric", discuss the consistency of this system with reality condition, and show the characteristic speeds of th…
The noncanonical Hamiltonian formulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is used to construct variational principles for symmetric equilibrium configurations of magnetized plasma including flow. In particular, helical symmetry is considered and results on axial and translational symmetries are retrieved as special cases of the helical configurations. The symmetry condition, which allows the description in terms of a magnetic flux function, is exploited to deduce a symmetric form of the noncanonical Poisson bracket of MHD. Casimir invariants are then obtained directly from the Poisson bracket. Eq…
We apply the theory of Lie point symmetries for the study of a family of partial differential equations which are integrable by the hyperbolic reductions method and are reduced to members of the Painlevé transcendents. The main results of this study is that from the application of the similarity transformations provided by the Lie point symmetries all the members of the family of the partial differential equations are reduced to second-order differential equations which are maximal symmetric and can be linearized.
We study a geometrical formulation of the nonlinear second-order Riccati equation (SORE) in terms of the projective vector field equation on $S^1$, whichn in turn is related to the stability algebra of Virasoro orbit. Using Darboux integrability method we obtain the first-integral of SORE and the results are applied to the study of its Lagrangian and Hamiltonian description. We unveil the relation between the Darboux polynomials and master symmetries associated to second-order Riccati. Using these results we show the existence of a Lagrangian description for the related system, and the Painlev…
Time-symmetric quantum mechanics can be described in the usual Weyl--Wigner--Moyal formalism (WWM) by using the properties of the Wigner distribution, and its generalization, the cross-Wigner distribution. The use of the latter makes clear a strongly oscillating interference between the pre- and post-selected states. This approach allows us to give explicit formulas for the state reconstruction problem, thus generalizing known results to the case of arbitrary observables. In a forthcoming paper we will extend these results to other quantization schemes.
We explain why the main conclusion of Bender et al, hep-th/0511229 [J. Phys. A 39 (2006) 1657] regarding the practical superiority of the non-Hermitian description of PT-symmetric quantum systems over their Hermitian description is not valid. Recalling the essential role played by the Hermitian description in the characterization and interpretation of the physical observables, we maintain that as far as the physical aspects of the theory are concerned the Hermitian description is not only unavoidable but also indispensable.
Motivated by the future stability problem of solutions of the Einstein--Yang--Mills (EYM) system with arbitrary dimension, we aim to (1) construct a tensorial symmetric hyperbolic formulation for the $(n+1)$-dimensional EYM system in the temporal gauge; (2) establish the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of EYM equations in the temporal gauge using this tensorial symmetric hyperbolic system. By introducing certain auxiliary variables, we extend essentially the $(n+1)$-dimensional Yang--Mills system to a tensorial symmetric hyperbolic system. On the contrary, this symmetric hyperbolic…
We investigate the existence of analytic solutions for the field equations in the Einstein-æther theory for a static spherically symmetric spacetime and provide a detailed dynamical system analysis of the field equations. In particular, we investigate if the gravitational field equations in the Einstein-æther model in the static spherically symmetric spacetime possesses the Painlevè property, so that an analytic explicit integration can be performed. We find that analytic solutions can be presented in terms of Laurent expansion only when the matter source consists of a perfect fluid with linea…
