The mass density of nanowires is determined using in-situ resonance frequency experiments combined with quasi-static nanotensile tests. Our results reveal a mass density of 7.36 g/cm3 on average which is below the theoretical density of bulk cobalt. Also the density of electrodeposited cobalt nanowires is found to decrease with the aspect ratio. The results are discussed in terms of the measurement accuracy and the microstructure of the nanowires.
Using focused electron-beam-induced deposition (FEBID), we fabricate vertical, platinum-coated cobalt nanowires with a controlled three-dimensional structure. The latter is engineered to feature bends along the height: these are used as pinning sites for domain walls, the presence of which we investigate using X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) coupled to PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM). The vertical geometry of our sample combined with the low incidence of the X-ray beam produce an extended wire shadow which we use to recover the wire's magnetic configuration. In this transmiss…
Cylindrical magnetic nanowires with large transversal magnetocrystalline anisotropy have been shown to sustain non-trivial magnetic configurations resulting from the interplay of spatial confinement, exchange, and anisotropies. Exploiting these peculiar 3D spin configurations and their solitonic inhomogeneities are prospected to improve magnetization switching in future spintronics, such as power-saving magnetic memory and logic applications. Here we employ holographic vector field electron tomography to reconstruct the remanent magnetic states in CoNi nanowires with 10 nm resolution in 3D, wi…
In this work we have employed density-functional theory with hybrid functionals to investigate the atomic and electronic structure of bare and hydrogenated Co doped ZnO nanowires. We find that in the absence of passivation on the nanowire surface, the cobalt atoms segregate to the surface. On the other hand, under hydrogen passivation, the incorporation of Co is more favorable at inner sites. This suggests that the incorporation of Co in nanostructures has a dependence on the environment and may be facilitated by external atoms and relaxation of the surface.
Free-standing, interconnected metallic nanowire networks with density as low as 40 mg/cm^{3} have been achieved over cm-scale areas, using electrodeposition into polycarbonate membranes that have been ion-tracked at multiple angles. Networks of interconnected magnetic nanowires further provide an exciting platform to explore 3-dimensional nanomagnetism, where their structure, topology and frustration may be used as additional degrees of freedom to tailor the materials properties. New magnetization reversal mechanisms in cobalt networks are captured by the first-order reversal curve method, whi…
A next-generation memory device utilizing a three-dimensional nanowire system requires the reliable control of domain wall motion. In this letter, domain walls are studied in cylindrical nanowires consisting of alternating segments of cobalt and nickel. The material interfaces acting as domain wall pinning sites, are utilized in combination with current pulses, to control the position of the domain wall, which is monitored using magnetoresistance measurements. Magnetic force microscopy results further confirm the occurrence of current assisted domain wall depinning. Data bits are therefore shi…
Cd3As2 is a newly booming Dirac semimetal with linear dispersion along all three momentum directions and can be viewed as 3D analog of graphene. As breaking of either time reversal symmetry or spatial inversion symmetry, the Dirac semimetal is believed to transform into Weyl semimetal with exotic chiral anomaly effect, while the experimental evidence of the chiral anomaly is still missing in Cd3As2. Here we report the magneto-transport properties of individual Cd3As2 nanowires. Large negative magnetoresistance (MR) with magnitude of -63% at 60 K and -11% at 300 K are observed when the magnetic…
Nanoprobe X-ray diffraction (nXRD) using focused synchrotron radiation is a powerful technique to study the structural properties of individual semiconductor nanowires. However, when performing the experiment under ambient conditions, the required high X-ray dose and prolonged exposure times can lead to radiation damage. To unveil the origin of radiation damage, we compare nXRD experiments carried out on individual semiconductor nanowires in their as grown geometry both under ambient conditions and under He atmosphere at the microfocus station of the P08 beamline at the 3rd generation source P…
Recent advances in the synthesis of inorganic and organic nanowires and nanotubes have provided both components for various functional devices and platforms for the study of low- dimensional transport phenomena. However, tremendous challenges have remained not only for the integration of these building blocks into functional devices, but also in the characterization of the fundamental transport properties in these nanoscale model systems. In particular, thermal and thermoelectric transport measurements can be considerably more complicated than electron transport measurements, especially for in…
Similar to electron waves, the phonon states in semiconductors can undergo changes induced by external boundaries. Modification of acoustic phonon spectrum in structures with periodically modulated elastic constant or mass density - referred to as phononic crystals - has been proven experimentally and utilized in practical applications. A possibility of modifying acoustic phonon spectrum in individual nanostructures via spatial confinement would bring tremendous benefits for controlling phonon-electron interaction and thermal conduction at nanoscale. However, despite strong scientific and prac…
Individual highly pure single crystalline silver nanowires (Ag NWs) were investigated with regard to the electrical conductivity $σ$, the thermal conductivity $λ$ and the Seebeck coefficient $S$ as function of the temperature $T$ between $1.4\,\mathrm{K}$ and room temperature (RT). Transmission electron microscopy was performed subsequently to the thermoelectric characterization of the Ag NWs, so that their transport properties can be correlated with the structural data. The crystal structure, surface morphology and the rare occurrence of kinks and twinning were identified. The thermoelectric …
Strain engineering provides an effective way of tailoring the electronic and optoelectronic properties of semiconductor nanomaterials and nanodevices, giving rise to novel functionalities. Here, we present direct experimental evidence of strain-induced modifications of hole mobility in individual GaAs nanowires, using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The conductivity of the nanowires varied with applied uniaxial tensile stress, showing an initial decrease of ~5-20% up to a stress of 1~ 2 GPa, subsequently increasing up to the elastic limit of the nanowires. This is attributed to…
We investigate the electromechanical interactions in individual P(VDF-TrFE) nanowires in response to localized electrical poling via a conducting atomic force microscope tip. Spatially resolved measurements of piezoelectric coefficients and elastic moduli before and after poling reveal a striking dependence on the polarity of the poling field, notably absent in thin films of the same composition. These observations are attributed to the unclamped nature of the nanowires and the inherent asymmetry in their chemical and electrical interactions with the tip and underlying substrate. Our findings …
Barcode magnetic nanowires typically comprise a multilayer magnetic structure in a single body with more than one segment type. Interestingly, owing to selective functionalization and novel interactions between the layers, barcode magnetic nanowires have attracted significant attention, particularly in the field of bioengineering. However, an analysis of their magnetic properties at the individual nanowire level remains challenging. With this background, herein, we investigated the characterization of magnetic nanowires at room temperature under ambient conditions based on magnetic images obta…
The controllable handling of an arbitrary single particle of matter with sub-100 nanometer (nm) dimensions is an essential but unsolved scientific challenge. We demonstrate nanoparticle-seeded glancing angle deposition using 10-100 nm diameter nanoparticle seeds (Er2O3, Fe@C, and Fe). The products are nanoparticle-nanowire heterostructures composed of arbitrary nanoscale tips attached to micron-length nanowire handles. Optical micromanipulation of the micron-scale handles enables concurrent manipulation of the attached nanoscale particles of matter.
The ability to engineer the thermal conductivity of materials allows us to control the flow of heat and derive novel functionalities such as thermal rectification, thermal switching, and thermal cloaking. While this could be achieved by making use of composites and metamaterials at bulk scales, engineering the thermal conductivity at micro- and nano-scale dimensions is considerably more challenging. In this work we show that the local thermal conductivity along a single Si nanowire can be tuned to a desired value (between crystalline and amorphous limits) with high spatial resolution through s…
We probe and control the optical properties of emission centers forming in radial het- erostructure GaAs-Al0.3Ga0.7As nanowires and show that these emitters, located in Al0.3Ga0.7As layers, can exhibit quantum-dot like characteristics. We employ a radio frequency surface acoustic wave to dynamically control their emission energy and occupancy state on a nanosec- ond timescale. In the spectral oscillations we identify unambiguous signatures arising from both the mechanical and electrical component of the surface acoustic wave. In addition, differ- ent emission lines of a single quantum dot exhi…
Segmented magnetic nanowires are a promising route for the development of three dimensional data storage techniques. Such devices require a control of the coercive field and the coupling mechanisms between individual magnetic elements. In our study, we investigate electrodeposited nanomagnets within host templates using vibrating sample magnetometry and observe a strong dependence between nanowire length and coercive field (25 nm to 5 $μ$m) and diameter (25 nm to 45 nm). A transition from a magnetization reversal through coherent rotation to domain wall propagation is observed at an aspect rat…
Facing the ever-growing demand for data storage will most probably require a new paradigm. Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions are anticipated to solve this issue as they are arguably the smallest spin textures in magnetic thin films in nature. We designed cobalt-based multilayered thin films where the cobalt layer is sandwiched between two heavy metals providing additive interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which reach a value close to 2 mJ m-2 in the case of the Ir|Co|Pt asymmetric multilayers. Using a magnetization-sensitive scanning x-ray transmission microscopy technique, we imaged sm…
