We report on the magnetic properties and the crystallographic structure of the cobalt nanowire arrays as a function of their nanoscale dimensions. X-ray diffraction measurements show the appearance of an in-plane HCP-Co phase for nanowires with 50 nm diameter, suggesting a partial reorientation of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy axis along the membrane plane with increasing pore diameter. No significant changes in the magnetic behavior of the nanowire system are observed with decreasing temperature, indicating that the effective magnetoelastic anisotropy does not play a dominant role in the remagnetization processes of individual nanowires. An enhancement of the total magnetic anisotropy is found at room temperature with a decreasing nanowire diameter-to-length ratio (d/L), a result that is quantitatively analyzed on the basis of a simplified shape anisotropy model.
Using focused electron-beam-induced deposition (FEBID), we fabricate vertical, platinum-coated cobalt nanowires with a controlled three-dimensional structure. The latter is engineered to feature bends along the height: these are used as pinning sites for domain walls, the presence of which we investigate using X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) coupled to PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM). The vertical geometry of our sample combined with the low incidence of the X-ray beam produce an extended wire shadow which we use to recover the wire's magnetic configuration. In this transmiss…
Cylindrical magnetic nanowires with large transversal magnetocrystalline anisotropy have been shown to sustain non-trivial magnetic configurations resulting from the interplay of spatial confinement, exchange, and anisotropies. Exploiting these peculiar 3D spin configurations and their solitonic inhomogeneities are prospected to improve magnetization switching in future spintronics, such as power-saving magnetic memory and logic applications. Here we employ holographic vector field electron tomography to reconstruct the remanent magnetic states in CoNi nanowires with 10 nm resolution in 3D, wi…

Since 2000, the intensive effort in materials research to develop a diluted magnetic semiconductor exhibiting high-temperature (HT) ferromagnetism above room temperature was not successful. Here, the possible first bulk diluted HT-ferromagnetic non-metallic materials, based on the perovskite-type oxynitrides LaTa1-xCox(O,N)3-d (x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05) are realized. The Curie temperature of the synthesized powders exceeds 600 K and the sample magnetizations are large enough to be directly attracted by permanent magnets. Cobalt clusters as a possible source for the observed HT-ferromagnetism can b…
Free-standing, interconnected metallic nanowire networks with density as low as 40 mg/cm^{3} have been achieved over cm-scale areas, using electrodeposition into polycarbonate membranes that have been ion-tracked at multiple angles. Networks of interconnected magnetic nanowires further provide an exciting platform to explore 3-dimensional nanomagnetism, where their structure, topology and frustration may be used as additional degrees of freedom to tailor the materials properties. New magnetization reversal mechanisms in cobalt networks are captured by the first-order reversal curve method, whi…
In this study we investigate the structural and chemical changes of monatomic CoO$_2$ chains grown self-organized on the Ir(100) surface [P. Ferstl et al., PRL 117, 2016, 046101] and on Pt(100) under reducing and oxidizing conditions. By a combination of quantitative low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunnelling microscopy, and density functional theory we show that the cobalt oxide wires are completely reduced by H$_2$ at temperatures above 320 K and a 3x1 ordered Ir$_2$Co or Pt$_2$Co surface alloy is formed. Depending on temperature the surface alloy on Ir(100) is either hydrogen cove…
Milling of 2D flakes is a simple method to fabricate nanomaterial of any desired shape and size. Inherently milling process can introduce the impurity or disorder which might show exotic quantum transport phenomenon when studied at the low temperature. Here we report temperature dependent weak antilocalization (WAL) effects in the sculpted nanowires of topological insulator in the presence of perpendicular magnetic field. The quadratic and linear magnetoconductivity (MC) curves at low temperature indicate the bulk contribution in the transport. A cusp feature in magnetoconductivity curves (pos…
Bound Magnetic Polarons (BMP) have been proposed to play an important role in doped wide band gap semiconductors. We report the experimental evidence supporting polaronic magnetism and the role of defects on it. Temperature variation of electron paramagnetic resonance study reveals that the valence state of cobalt is 2+ and its nearest environment in the system is distorted tetrahedral in nature. Room temperature ferromagnetism have been found in all the doped [Co (1, 3, 5) % doped 3C-SiC] samples. The Curie temperature, TC of the samples have been found to be above 800 K. The isothermal magne…
Iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is a molecular semiconductor whose building blocks are one-dimensional ferromagnetic chains. We show that its optical and magnetic properties are controlled by the growth strategy, obtaining extremely high coercivities of over 1 T and modulating the exchange constant between 15 and 29 K through tuning the crystal phase by switching from organic molecular beam deposition, producing continuous thin films of nanocrystals with controlled orientations, to organic vapour phase deposition, producing ultralong nanowires. Magnetisation measurements are analysed using a suite …
There has been recent interest in superconductor-magnetic insulator hybrid Rashba nanowire setups for potentially hosting Majorana zero modes at smaller external Zeeman fields. Using the non-equilibrium Green's function technique, we develop a quantum transport model that accounts for the interplay between the quasiparticle dynamics in the superconductor-magnetic insulator bilayer structure and the transport processes through the Rashba nanowire. We provide an analysis of three-terminal setups to probe the local and non-local conductance in clean and disordered nanowires. We uncover the gap cl…
When magnetic skyrmions move under spin orbit torque in magnetic nanowires, they experience a skyrmion Hall effect, which pushes them towards the nanowire edge where they risk being annihilated; this puts an upper limit on how fast they can be driven. However, the same magnetic multilayer harboring skyrmions can sustain a Néel-type strip domain wall along the nanowire length, potentially keeping the skyrmions separated from the edge. Here we study the interplay between current driven skyrmions and domain walls and find that they increase the annihilation current and allow the skyrmions to move…
Theoretical research suggests a emergence of the Majorana bound states at the ends of the nanowires. Experimental verifications of said concept has already been executed, e.g., in superconductor/semiconductor nanowire devices where interplay between superconducting gap, spin-orbit coupling and external magnetic field allows for creation of zero-energy bound states. Recent experiments propose a topological phase diagram by local modification of the effective chemical potential. We discuss this possibility, using a model of experimental system in form of semi-infinite S/N junction. We calculate …

Studies of negative magnetoresistance in novel materials have recently been in the forefront of spintronic research. Here, we report an experimental observation of the temperature dependent negative magnetoresistance in Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) nanowires at ultralow temperatures (20 mK). We find a crossover from negative to positive magnetoresistance while increasing temperature under longitudinal magnetic field. We observe a large negative magnetoresistance which reaches -22% at 8T. The interplay between negative and positive magnetoresistance can be understood in terms of the compet…
When a topological insulator is made into a nanowire, the interplay between topology and size quantization gives rise to peculiar one-dimensional states whose energy dispersion can be manipulated by external fields. In the presence of proximity-induced superconductivity, these 1D states offer a tunable platform for Majorana zero modes. While the existence of such peculiar 1D states has been experimentally confirmed, the realization of robust proximity-induced superconductivity in topological-insulator nanowires remains a challenge. Here, we report the realization of superconducting topological…
