We show that the addition of a topological Gauss-Bonnet term to the gravitational action can greatly increase the instability of four-dimensional de Sitter space, by favoring the nucleation of black holes. The pair-production rate given by the Euclidean action for the instanton takes the form exp(Delta S) where S is the entropy in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. The coefficient of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the action sets a stability bound on the curvature of empty de Sitter space. For that coefficient in the low-energy effective action of heterotic string theory, the maximal curvature of de Sitter space is in general much lower than the Planck scale.
Braneworld cosmology for a domain wall embedded in the charged (Anti)-de Sitter-Schwarzschildblack hole of the five--dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory is considered. The effective Friedmann equation for the brane is derived by introducing the necessary surface counterterms required for a well-defined variational principlein the Gauss--Bonnet theory and for the finiteness of the bulk space. The asymptotic dynamics of the brane cosmology is determined and it is found that solutions with vanishingly small spatial volume are unphysical. The finiteness of the bulk action is related t…
We compute the mass and angular momenta of rotating anti-de Sitter spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity using a superpotential derived from standard Noether identities. The calculation relies on the fact that the Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet vacuum equations are the same when linearized on maximally symmetric backgrounds and uses the recently discovered D-dimensional Kerr-anti-de Sitter solutions to Einstein's equations.
In this paper we show that one can have asymptotically de Sitter (dS), anti-de Sitter (AdS) and flat solutions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity without any need to a cosmological constant term in field equations. First, we introduce static solutions whose 3-surfaces at fixed $r$ and $t$ have constant positive ($k=1$), negative ($k=-1$), or zero ($k=0$) curvature. We show that for $k=\pm1$, one can have asymptotically dS, AdS and flat spacetimes, while for the case of $k=0$, one has only asymptotically AdS solutions. Some of these solutions present naked singularities, while some others are black hole o…
We study the bending of light in the space-time of black holes in four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity, recently proposed by Glavan and Lin \cite{Glavan}. Using Rindler-Ishak method, the effect of Gauss-Bonnet coupling on the bending angle is studied. We show that a positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling gives a negative contribution to the Schwarzschild-de Sitter deflection angle, as one would expect.
We study the greybody factor and power spectra of Hawking radiation for the minimally or nonminimally coupled scalar field with exact numerical method in spherically symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black hole spacetime. The effects of scalar coupling constant, angular momentum number of scalar, spacetime dimension, cosmological constant and Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant on the Hawking radiation are studied in detail. Specifically, the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant always increases the greybody factor in the entire energy regime. Different from the case of Schwarzschild-de Sitter bl…
We study the greybody factors of the scalar fields in spherically symmetric Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes in higher dimensions. We derive the greybody factors analytically for both minimally and non-minimally coupled scalar fields. Moreover, we discuss the dependence of the greybody factor on various parameters including the angular momentum number, the non-minimally coupling constant, the spacetime dimension, the cosmological constant and the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient in detail. We find that the non-minimal coupling may suppress the Hawking radiation, while the Gauss-Bonnet coupl…
Interpreting the cosmological constant Λas a thermodynamic pressure and its conjugate quantity as a thermodynamic volume, we study the Maxwell's equal area law of higher dimensional Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes in extended phase space. These black hole solutions critically behave like Van der Waals systems. It has been realized that below the critical temperature T_c the stable equilibrium is violated. We show through calculations that the critical behaviors for the uncharged black holes only appear in d=5. For the charged case, we analyse solutions in d = 5 and d = 6 separately and find that,…
We discuss the classical and quantum properties of non-local modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity in de Sitter space, using its equivalent representation via string-inspired local scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a scalar potential. A classical, multiply de Sitter universe solution is found where one of the de Sitter phases corresponds to the primordial inflationary epoch, while the other de Sitter space solution--the one with the smallest Hubble rate--describes the late-time acceleration of our universe. A Chameleon scenario for the theory under investigation is developed, and it is successfully use…
By using a new approach, we demonstrate analytic expressions for slowly rotating Gauss-Bonnet charged black holes with negative cosmological constant. Up to the linear order of the rotating parameter a, the mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the charged black holes get no corrections from rotation.
We propose to compute the action and global charges of the asymptotically de Sitter solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory by using the counterterms method in conjunction with the quasilocal formalism. The general expression of the counterterms and the boundary stress tensor is presented for spacetimes of dimension $d\leq 7$. We apply this tehnique for several different solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a positive cosmological constant. Apart from known solutions, we consider also $d=5$ vacuum rotating black holes with equal magnitude angular momenta.
We present a new class of charged rotating solutions in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a negative cosmological constant. These solutions may be interpreted as black brane solutions with two inner and outer event horizons or an extreme black brane depending on the value of the mass parameter $m$. We also find that the Killing vectors are the null generators of the event horizon. The physical properties of the brane such as the temperature, the angular velocity, the entropy, the electric charge and potential are computed. We also compute the action and the Gibbs potential as a function o…
We introduce higher-derivative Gauss-Bonnet correction terms in the gravity sector and we relate the modified gravity theory in the bulk to the strongly coupled quantum field theory on a de Sitter boundary. We study the process of holographic thermalization by examining three nonlocal observables, the two-point function, the Wilson loop and the holographic entanglement entropy. We study the time evolution of these three observables and we find that as the strength of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is increased, the saturation time of the thermalization process to reach thermal equilibrium becomes s…
It is presented a thorough analysis of scalar perturbations in the background of Gauss-Bonnet, Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter and Gauss-Bonnet-anti-de Sitter black hole spacetimes. The perturbations are considered both in frequency and time domain. The dependence of the scalar field evolution on the values of the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$ is investigated. For Gauss-Bonnet and Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes, at asymptotically late times either power-law or exponential tails dominate, while for Gauss-Bonnet-anti-de Sitter black hole, the quasinormal modes govern the…
Analysis of time-domain profiles for gravitational perturbations shows that Gauss-Bonnet black holes in a de Sitter world possess a new kind of dynamical instability which does not take place for asymptotically flat Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes. The new instability is in the gravitational perturbations of the scalar type and is due to the nonvanishing cosmological constant. Analysis of the quasinormal spectrum in the stability sector shows that although the scalar type of gravitational perturbations alone does not obey Hod's conjectural bound, connecting the damping rate and the Hawking t…
We investigate the scalar field dynamics of models with nonminimally coupled scalar fields in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term and derive the structure of the effective potential and conditions for stable de Sitter solutions in general. Specializing to specific couplings, we explore the possibility of realizing the stable de Sitter configurations which may have implications for both the early Universe and late time evolution.
We study the instability of the charged Gauss-Bonnet de Sitter black holes under gravito-electromagnetic perturbations. We adopt two criteria to search for an instability of the scalar type perturbations, including the local instability criterion based on the $AdS_2$ Breitenlöhner-Freedman (BF) bound at extremality and the dynamical instability via quasinormal modes by full numerical analysis. We uncover the gravitational instability in five spacetime dimensions and above, and construct the complete parameter space in terms of the ratio of event and cosmological horizons and the Gauss-Bonnet c…
In this work, we present the possible existence of a thermalon phase transition between anti-de Sitter (AdS) to de Sitter (dS) vacua in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity by considering the Rényi statistics. A thermalon changes the asymptotic structure of spacetimes via the bubble nucleation of spherical thin-shells which host a black hole in the interior. All relevant thermodynamical quantities are computed in terms of the Renyi statistics in order to demonstrate the possible existence of the AdS to dS phase transition. In addition, we also comment on the behaviors of the phase transitions in the …
Here we have shown that asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theory are unstable under linear perturbations of spacetime in some region of parameters. This (eikonal) instability develops at high multipole numbers. We found the exact parametric regions of the eikonal instability and extended this consideration to asymptotically flat and de Sitter cases. The approach to the threshold of instability is driven by purely imaginary quasinormal modes, which are similar to those found recently in [5] for the higher curvature corrected black hole with the pl…
We investigate various types of Fubini instantons in Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravitation, which describe the decay of the vacuum state at a hilltop potential through the tunneling without a barrier. It is shown that the vacuum states are modified by the non-minimally coupled higher-curvature term. Accordingly, we present the new type of solutions describing the tunneling from new vacuum states in anti-de Sitter and de Sitter backgrounds. The decay probabilities of vacuum states are also influenced. Consequently, we show that the semiclassical exponents can be decreased for sp…
In this paper, we probe in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole and its thermodynamics. We illustrate the three asymptotically 4D EGB spacetime as an asymptotically flat, de Sitter, and Anti-de Sitter. Also, we apply the tunneling of the massless particles from the horizon of 4D EGB gravity and we investigate the correlation between the emission modes and temperature of the horizon. In asymptotically flat spacetime, the existence of the coupling constant alone constructs the regular spacetime, the radiation deviates from the pure thermal, and the temperature of the black hole horizon would be z…
The local and global thermal phase structure for asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes charged under an abelian gauge group, with both Gauss-Bonnet and quartic field strength corrections, is mapped out for all parameter space. We work in the grand canonical ensemble where the external electric potential is held fixed. The analysis is performed in an arbitrary number of dimensions, for all three possible horizon topologies - spherical, flat or hyperbolic. For spherical horizons, new metastable configurations are exhibited both for the pure Gauss-Bonnet theory as well as the pure higher deri…
The regularization proposed in [D.~Glavan and C.~Lin, Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 124}, 081301 (2020)] led to the black hole solutions which turned out to be the solutions of the consistent well-defined $4$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity suggested in [K.~Aoki, M.~Gorji and S.~Mukohyama, arXiv:2005.03859]. Recently the quasinormal modes of bosonic and fermionic fields for this theory were studied. Here we calculate quasinormal frequencies of the test scalar, electromagnetic and Dirac fields for the spherically symmetric black hole in the novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sit…
Rotating charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole solutions in higher dimensional ($d >4$), asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime are obtained in the small angular momentum limit. The angular momentum, magnetic dipole moment, and the gyromagnetic ratio of the black holes are calculated and it turns out that the Gauss-Bonnet term does not affect to the gyromagnetic ratio.
We investigate thermodynamic aspects of black holes in the recently formulated four dimensional Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity, focusing on its asymptotically de Sitter ($Λ>0$) solutions. We take a Euclidean path integral approach, where thermodynamic data is fixed at a finite radius `cavity' outside the black hole to achieve equilibrium in the presence of the cosmological horizon. Working in the extended phase space where the cosmological constant is treated as a thermodynamic pressure, we study the phase structure of both uncharged and charged solutions, uncovering a wealth of phenomena. In …
We study the emission of gravitons by a homogeneous brane with the Gauss-Bonnet term into an Anti de Sitter five dimensional bulk spacetime. It is found that the graviton emission depends on the curvature scale and the Gauss-Bonnnet coupling and that the amount of emission generally decreases. Therefore nucleosynthesis constraints are easier to satisfy by including the Gauss-Bonnet term.
We compute the second order transport coefficients of a hydrodynamic theory with Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity dual. We show the breakdown of the universal hydrodynamic relation $ -2 λ_0 + 4 λ_1 - λ_2 = 0 $ for the general values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling.
With in the extended thermodynamics, we give a comparative study of critical heat engines for Gauss-Bonnet and charged black holes in AdS in five dimensions, in the limit of large Gauss-Bonnet parameter $α$ and charge $q$, respectively. We show that the approach of efficiency of heat engines to Carnot limit in Gauss-Bonnet black holes is higher(lower) than charged black holes when corresponding parameters are small(large).
The Gauss-Bonnet interaction is the only consistent quadratic interaction below the Planck scale in the Randall-Sundrum compactification. We study various static and inflationary solutions including this Gauss-Bonnet interaction.
We prove that in anti de Sitter space, there is no van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity in the graviton propagator. Here we obtain the mass term of $M^2\propto Λ^2$ from the Gauss-Bonnet term, which is a ghost-free one. The condition that the massless limit is smooth is automatically satisfied for this case.
We investigate the linearized gravity on a single de Sitter brane in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk in the Einstein Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theory. We find that the Einstein gravity is recovered for a high energy brane, i.e., in the limit of the large expansion rate, $H\ell\gg 1$, where $H$ is the de Sitter expansion rate and $\ell$ is the curvature radius of the AdS bulk. We also show that, in the short distance limit $r\ll \min\{\ell,H^{-1}\}$, the Brans-Dicke gravity is obtained, whereas in the large distance limit $r\gg\max\{\ell,H^{-1}\}$, the Brans-Dicke gravity is obtained for $H\ell=O(1)$, a…
We study the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet term on vacuum decay process in the Coleman-De Luccia formalism. The Gauss-Bonnet term has an exponential coupling with the real scalar field, which appears in the low energy effective action of string theories. We calculate numerically the instanton solution, which describes the process of vacuum decay, and obtain the critical size of bubble. We find that the Gauss-Bonnet term has a nontrivial effect on the false vacuum decay, depending on the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient.
We study the stability of static, hyperbolic Gauss-Bonnet black holes in (4+1)-dimensional Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space-time against the formation of scalar hair. Close to extremality the black holes possess a near-horizon topology of AdS_2 x H^3 such that within a certain range of the scalar field mass one would expect that they become unstable to the condensation of an uncharged scalar field. We confirm this numerically and observe that there exists a family of hairy black hole solutions labelled by the number of nodes of the scalar field function. We construct explicit examples of solutions w…
In presence of Gauss-Bonnet corrections, we study anisotropic inflation aided by a massless $SU(2)$ gauge field where both the gauge field and the Gauss-Bonnet term are non-minimally coupled to the inflaton. In this scenario, under slow-roll approximations, the anisotropic inflation is realized as an attractor solution with quadratic forms of inflaton potential and Gauss-Bonnet coupling function. We show that the degree of anisotropy is proportional to the additive combination of two slow-roll parameters of the theory. The anisotropy may become either positive or negative similar to the non-Ga…
A black brane solution to a Gauss-Bonnet massive gravity is introduced. In the context of AdS/CFT correspondence, the viscosity to entropy ratio is found by the Green-Kubo formula. The result indicates violation of the well-known KSS bound as expected in a higher derivative theory. Setting mass zero gives back the known viscosity to entropy ratio dependent on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, while without Gauss-Bonnet term, a nonzero mass parameter doesn't contribute to the ratio which saturates the bound of $1/4π$.
Assuming $ω=\sum_n C^{(n)}q^{2n}$ in the low-frequency limit, we apply the refined recipe to compute the dispersion relation of shear quasinormal modes of the Gauss-Bonnet black brane. Treating the Gauss-Bonnet parameter $\lagb$ nonperturbatively and the momentum $q$ perturbatively, we work out $C^{(1)}$, $C^{(2)}$, confirm previous results in the literature and pave the way to a general formula for $C^{(n)}$.
We compute all the second order transport coefficients of a hydrodynamic theory with a gravity dual which includes a Gauss-Bonnet term. We find that a particular linear combination of the second order transport coefficients, which was found to vanish in generic two derivative gravity theories with matter, remains zero even in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term. We contrast this behavior with the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio.
We consider a "Scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet" theory in four dimension, where the scalar field couples non minimally with the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term. This coupling with the scalar field ensures the non topological character of the GB term. In this scenario, we examine the possibility for collapsing of the scalar field. Our result reveals that such a collapse is possible in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet gravity for suitable choices of parametric regions. The singularity formed as a result of the collapse is found to be a curvature singularity which is hidden from exterior by an apparent horizon.
Understanding black hole microstructure via the thermodynamic geometry can provide us with more deeper insight into black hole thermodynamics in modified gravities. In this paper, we study the black hole phase transition and Ruppeiner geometry for the $d$-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet anti-de Sitter black holes. The results show that the small-large black hole phase transition is universal in this gravity. By reducing the thermodynamic quantities with the black hole charge, we clearly exhibit the phase diagrams in different parameter spaces. Of particular interest is that the radius of the …
We study the holographic p-wave superconductors in a five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity with an SU(2) Yang-Mills gauge field. In the probe approximation, we find that when the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient grows, the condensation of the vector field becomes harder, both the perpendicular and parallel components, with respect to the direction of the condensation, of the anisotropic conductivity decrease. We also study the mass of the quasi-particle excitations, the gap frequency and the DC conductivities of the p-wave superconductor. All of them depend on the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient. In addition…
Configurational entropy has been revealed as a reliable method for constraining some parameters of a given model [Phys. Rev. D \textbf{92} (2015) 126005, Eur. Phys. J. C \textbf{76} (2016) 100]. In this letter we calculate the configurational entropy in Gauss-Bonnet braneworld models. Our results restrict the range of acceptability of the Gauss-Bonnet scalar values. In this way, the information theoretical measure in Gauss-Bonnet scenarios opens a new window to probe situations where the additional parameters, responsible for the Gauss-Bonnet sector, are arbitrary. We also show that such an ap…
We investigate the thermodynamics of confnement/deconfinement transition in soft wall model of QCD with Gauss-Bonnet corrections using AdS/CFT correspondence. In bulk AdS space-time the transition is geometric and is known as Hawking-Page transition. The Hawking-Page transition be- tween two geometries, namely charged AdS black hole and thermally charged AdS have been studied with Gauss-Bonnet corrections up-to first order. The Gauss-Bonnet coupling modifies the transition temperature of the system, but qualitative features remain unchanged. We obtain the curves between chemical potential and …
We show that the Gauss-Bonnet term is the only consistent curvature squared interaction in the Randall-Sundrum model and various static and inflationary solutions can be found. And from metric perturbations around the RS background with a single brane embedded, we also show that for a vanishing Gauss-Bonnet coefficient, the brane bending allows us to reproduce the 4D Einstein gravity at the linearized level.
We study anisotropic inflation with Gauss-Bonnet correction in presence of a massless vector field. In this scenario, exact anisotropic power-law inflation is realized when the inflaton potential, gauge coupling function and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling are exponential functions. We show that anisotropy becomes proportional to two slow-roll parameters of the theory and hence gets enhanced in presence of quadratic curvature corrections. The stability analysis reveals that anisotropic power-law solutions remain stable over a substantially large parameter region.
We examine the relativistic Nambu-Goto model with Gauss-Bonnet boundary term added to the action integral. The system is analysed using an invariant representation of dynamical string degrees of freedom by complex Liouville fields. The solutions of classical equations of motion for open strings are described.
The on-shell gravitational action and the boundary stress tensor are essential ingredients in the study of black hole thermodynamics. We employ the Hamilton-Jacobi method to calculate the boundary counterterms necessary to remove the divergences and allow the study of the thermodynamics of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes.
I review recent work on holographic superconductivity with Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, and show how the critical temperature of the superconductor depends on both gravitational backreaction and the Gauss-Bonnet parameter, using both analytic and numerical arguments. I also review computations of the conductivity, finding the energy gap, and demonstrating that there is no universal gap ratio, $ω_g/T_c$, for these superconductors.
The phase transition of the Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole has the similar property with the van der Waals thermodynamic system. However, it is determined by the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient α, not only the horizon radius. Furthermore, the phase transition is not the pure one between a big black hole and a small black hole. With this issue, we introduce a new order parameter to investigate the critical phenomenonand to give the microstructure explanation of the Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole phase transition. And the critical exponents are also obtained. At the critical pointof the Gauss-Bonnet AdS blac…
We study the stabilities of (A)dS charged Gauss-Bonnet(GB) black holes in the large $D$ dimensions. After integrating the equation of motion with respect to the radial direction, we obtain the effective equations at large $D$ to describe the nonlinear dynamical deformations of the black hole. From the perturbation analysis of the effective equations, we get the analytic expressions of the frequencies for the quasinormal modes of scalar type. Furthermore we show that the charged GB black hole becomes unstable only if the cosmological constant is positive, otherwise the black hole is always stab…
We study the thermodynamic properties associated with black hole horizon and cosmological horizon for the Gauss-Bonnet solution in de Sitter space. When the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient is positive, a locally stable small black hole appears in the case of spacetime dimension $d=5$, the stable small black hole disappears and the Gauss-Bonnet black hole is always unstable quantum mechanically when $d \ge 6$. On the other hand, the cosmological horizon is found always locally stable independent of the spacetime dimension. But the solution is not globally preferred, instead the pure de Sitter space is…
We investigate Hawking radiation in the novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity which is recently formulated by Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)]. We first find the constraints on $α$ and $Λ$ to retain a dS black hole in the spacetime. Both the greybody factor and the power spectra of the Hawking radiation of the massless scalar are studied for the full range of various parameters including the GB coupling constant $α$, the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the constant related to the scalar $ξ$ numerically. In particular, we find the greybody factor is larger for a negative $α…
Employing higher curvature corrections to Einstein--Maxwell gravity has garnered a great deal of attention motivated by the high energy regime in quantum nature of black hole physics. In addition, one may employ gravity's rainbow to encode quantum gravity effects into the black hole solutions. In this paper, we regard an energy dependent static spacetime with various topologies and study its black hole solutions in the context of Gauss--Bonnet Born--Infeld (GB--BI) gravity. We study thermodynamic properties and examine the first law of thermodynamics. Using suitable local transformation, we en…
In this paper, the following two propositions are proven under the dominant energy condition for the matter field in the higher-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetime in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the presence of a cosmological constant $Λ$. First, for $Λ\le 0$ and $α\ge 0$ without a fine-tuning to give a unique anti-de Sitter vacuum, where $α$ is the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, vanishing generalized Misner-Sharp mass is equivalent to the maximally symmetric spacetime. Under the fine-tuning, it is equivalent to the vacuum class I spacetime. Second, under the fine-tuning with $α>…
We investigate the combined effect of fluxes and higher-order curvature corrections, in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet term, on the existence of de Sitter vacua in a heterotic string inspired framework, compactified on spheres and tori. We first gain some intuition on the effects of these corrections by studying a perturbative expansion in the small Gauss-Bonnet coupling. Then, for choices of potential closer to the string theory predictions, we show that the inclusion of quadratic curvature corrections actually reduces the parametric likelihood of de Sitter solutions.
A scalar-tensor model with Gauss-Bonnet and non-minimal kinetic couplings is considered, in which ghost modes are eliminated via a Lagrange multiplier constraint. A reconstruction procedure is deviced for the scalar potential and Lagrange multiplier, valid for any given cosmological scenario. In particular, inflationary and dark energy cosmologies of different types (power-law, Little-Rip, de Sitter, quasi de Sitter) are reconstructed in such models. It is shown that, for various choices of the kinetic coupling terms, it is possible to obtain a viable inflationary phenomenology compatible with…
We consider scalar-Gauss-Bonnet and modified Gauss-Bonnet gravities and reconstruct these theories from the universe expansion history. In particular, we are able to construct versions of those theories (with and without ordinary matter), in which the matter dominated era makes a transition to the cosmic acceleration epoch. It is remarkable that, in several of the cases under consideration, matter dominance and the deceleration-acceleration transition occur in the presence of matter only. The late-time acceleration epoch is described asymptotically by de Sitter space but may also correspond to…
We study the thermodynamic properties of a black hole and the Hawking-Page phase transition in the asymptotically anti--de Sitter spacetime in the dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravitation. We show how the higher-order curvature terms can influence both the thermodynamic properties and the phase transition. We evaluate both heat capacity and free energy difference to determine the local and global thermodynamic stabilities, respectively. We find that the phase transition occurs from the thermal anti--de Sitter to a small spherical black hole geometry and occurs to a hyperbolic blac…
In the gravitational effective theories including higher curvature terms, cosmological solutions can have nontrivial de Sitter fixed points. We study phenomenological implications of such points, focusing on a theory in which a massive scalar field is nonminimally coupled to the Euler density. We first analyze the phase portrait of the dynamical system and show that the fixed point can be a sink or a saddle, depending on the strength of the coupling. Then, we compute the perturbation spectra generated in the vicinity of the fixed point in order to investigate whether the fixed point may be con…
