The on-shell gravitational action and the boundary stress tensor are essential ingredients in the study of black hole thermodynamics. We employ the Hamilton-Jacobi method to calculate the boundary counterterms necessary to remove the divergences and allow the study of the thermodynamics of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes.
We propose to compute the action and global charges of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory by adding boundary counterterms to the gravitational action. The general expression of the counterterms and the boundary stress tensor is presented for spacetimes of dimension $d\leq 9$. We apply this tehnique for several different types of black objects. Apart from static and rotating black holes, we consider also Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black string solutions with negative cosmological constant.
By a suitable transformation, we present the $(n+1)$-dimensional charged rotating solutions of Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a complete set of allowed rotation parameters which are real in the whole spacetime. We show that these charged rotating solutions present black hole solutions with two inner and outer event horizons, extreme black holes or naked singularities provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitable. Using the surface terms that make the action well-defined for Gauss-Bonnet gravity and the counterterm method for eliminating the divergences in action, we compute finite ac…
We propose to compute the action and global charges of the asymptotically de Sitter solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory by using the counterterms method in conjunction with the quasilocal formalism. The general expression of the counterterms and the boundary stress tensor is presented for spacetimes of dimension $d\leq 7$. We apply this tehnique for several different solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a positive cosmological constant. Apart from known solutions, we consider also $d=5$ vacuum rotating black holes with equal magnitude angular momenta.
We consider a scalar field with a Gauss-Bonnet-type coupling to the curvature in a curved space-time. For such a quadratic coupling to the curvature, the metric energy-momentum tensor does not contain derivatives of the metric of orders greater than two. We obtain the metric energy-momentum tensor and find the geometric structure of the first three counterterms to the vacuum averages of the energy-momentum tensor for an arbitrary background metric of an N-dimensional space-time. In a homogeneous isotropic space, we obtain the first three counterterms of the n-wave procedure, which allow calcul…
We apply the method of holographic renormalization to computing black hole masses in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces. In particular, we demonstrate that the Hamilton-Jacobi approach to obtaining the boundary action yields a set of counterterms sufficient to render the masses finite for four, five, six and seven-dimensional R-charged black holes in gauged supergravities. In addition, we prove that the familiar black hole thermodynamical expressions and in particular the first law continues to holds in general in the presence of arbitrary matter couplings to gravity.
Braneworld cosmology for a domain wall embedded in the charged (Anti)-de Sitter-Schwarzschildblack hole of the five--dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory is considered. The effective Friedmann equation for the brane is derived by introducing the necessary surface counterterms required for a well-defined variational principlein the Gauss--Bonnet theory and for the finiteness of the bulk space. The asymptotic dynamics of the brane cosmology is determined and it is found that solutions with vanishingly small spatial volume are unphysical. The finiteness of the bulk action is related t…
We present arguments for the existence of five-dimensional rotating black holes with equal magnitude angular momenta in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with negative cosmological constant. These solutions posses a regular horizon of spherical topology and approach asymptotically an Anti-de Sitter spacetime background. We discuss the general properties of these solutions and, using an adapted counterterm prescription, we compute their entropy and conserved charges.
Although gravitational actions diverge in asymptotically AdS spacetimes, boundary counterterms can be added in order to cancel out those divergences; such counterterms are known in general to third order in the Riemann tensor for the Einstein-Hilbert action. Considering foliations of AdS with an $S^m \times H^{d-m}$ boundary, we discuss a simple algorithm which we use to generate counterterms up to sixth order in the Riemann tensor, for the Einstein-Hilbert, Gauss-Bonnet and third-order-Lovelock Lagrangians. We also comment on other theories such as $F(R)$ gravity.
We review the construction of the universal Hamilton-Jacobi counterterm for dilaton gravity in two dimensions, derive the corresponding result in the Cartan formulation and elaborate further upon black hole thermodynamics and semi-classical corrections. Applications include spherically symmetric black holes in arbitrary dimensions with Minkowski- or AdS-asymptotics, the BTZ black hole and black holes in two-dimensional string theory.
Recently, a novel four-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet theory has been suggested as a limiting case of the original $D$-dimensional theory with singular Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α\rightarrowα/(D-4)$. The theory is proposed at the level of field equations. Here we analyse this theory at the level of action. We find that the on-shell action and surface terms split into parts, one of which does not scale like $(D-4)$. The limiting $D\rightarrow4$ procedure, therefore, gives unphysical divergences in the on-shell action and surface terms in four dimensions. We further highlight various issues rela…
Just like AdS spacetimes, Lifshitz spacetimes require counterterms in order to make the on-shell value of the bulk action finite. We study these counterterms using the Hamilton-Jacobi method. Rather than imposing boundary conditions from the start, we will derive suitable boundary conditions by requiring that divergences can be canceled using only local counterterms. We will demonstrate in examples that this procedure indeed leads to a finite bulk action while at the same time it determines the asymptotic behavior of the fields. This puts more substance to the belief that Lifshitz spacetimes a…
In this paper, we show that the physical information given by conserved charges for asymptotically AdS spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity is encoded in the electric part of the Weyl tensor. This result generalizes the conformal mass definition by Ashtekar-Magnon-Das (AMD) to a gravity theory with a Gauss-Bonnet term. This proof makes use of the Noether charges obtained from an action renormalized by the addition of counterterms which depend on the extrinsic curvature (Kounterterms). If the asymptotic fall-off behaviour of the Weyl tensor is same as the one considered in the AMD me…
We present two new classes of magnetic brane solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a negative cosmological constant. The first class of solutions yields an $(n+1)$-dimensional spacetime with a longitudinal magnetic field generated by a static magnetic brane. We also generalize this solution to the case of spinning magnetic branes with one or more rotation parameters. We find that these solutions have no curvature singularity and no horizons, but have a conic geometry. In these spacetimes, when all the rotation parameters are zero, the electric field vanishes, and therefore th…
We explore an effective supergravity action in the presence of a massless gauge field which contains the Gauss-Bonnet term as well as a dilaton field. We construct a new class of black brane solutions of this theory with the Lifshitz asymptotic by fixing the parameters of the model such that the asymptotic Lifshitz behavior can be supported. Then we construct the well-defined finite action through the use of the counterterm method. We also obtain two independent constants along the radial coordinate by combining the equations of motion. Calculations of these two constants at infinity through t…
Considering both the Gauss-Bonnet and the Born-Infeld terms, which are on similar footing with regard to string corrections on the gravity side and electrodynamic side, we present a new class of rotating solutions in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with $k$ rotation parameters in the presence of a nonlinear electromagnetic field. These solutions, which are asymptotically anti-de Sitter in the presence of cosmological constant, may be interpreted as black brane solutions with inner and outer event horizons, an extreme black brane or naked singularity provided the metric parameters are chosen suitably. We …
A new class of solutions which yields an $(n+1)$-dimensional spacetime with a longitudinal nonlinear magnetic field is introduced. These spacetimes have no curvature singularity and no horizon, and the magnetic field is non singular in the whole spacetime. They may be interpreted as traversable wormholes which could be supported by matter not violating the weak energy conditions. We generalize this class of solutions to the case of rotating solutions and show that the rotating wormhole solutions have a net electric charge which is proportional to the magnitude of the rotation parameter, while …
We propose a regularization procedure for the novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity, which produces a set of field equations that can be written in closed form in four dimensions. Our method consists of introducing a counter term into the action, and does not rely on the embedding or compactification of any higher-dimensional spaces. This counterterm is sufficient to cancel the divergence in the action that would otherwise occur, and exactly reproduces the trace of the field equations of the original formulation of the theory. All other field equations display an extra scalar gravitati…
We construct rotating black hole solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in five spacetime dimensions. These black holes are asymptotically flat, and possess a regular horizon of spherical topology and two equal-magnitude angular momenta associated with two distinct planes of rotation. The action and global charges of the solutions are obtained by using the quasilocal formalism with boundary counterterms generalized for the case of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. We discuss the general properties of these black holes and study their dependence on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$. We argu…
We compute the Hamiltonian for spherically symmetric scalar field collapse in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in D dimensions using slicings that are regular across future horizons. We first reduce the Lagrangian to two dimensions using spherical symmetry. We then show that choosing the spatial coordinate to be a function of the areal radius leads to a relatively simple Hamiltonian constraint whose gravitational part is the gradient of the generalized mass function. Next we complete the gauge fixing such that the metric is the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet generalization of non-static Painleve-Gullstran…
In this paper we, first, generalize the quasilocal definition of the stress energy tensor of Einstein gravity to the case of Lovelock gravity, by introducing the tensorial form of surface terms that make the action well-defined. We also introduce the boundary counterterm that removes the divergences of the action and the conserved quantities of the solutions of Lovelock gravity with flat boundary at constant $t$ and $r$. Second, we obtain the metric of spacetimes generated by brane sources in dimensionally continued gravity through the use of Hamiltonian formalism, and show that these solution…
We derive the gravitational Hamiltonian starting from the Gauss-Bonnet action, keeping track of all surface terms. This is done using the language of orthonormal frames and forms to keep things as tidy as possible. The surface terms in the Hamiltonian give a remarkably simple expression for the total energy of a spacetime. This expression is consistent with energy expressions found in hep-th/0212292. However, we can apply our results whatever the choice of background and whatever the symmetries of the spacetime.
We investigate the charged Schwarzschild-Anti-deSitter (SAdS) BH thermodynamics in 5d Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with electromagnetic field. The Hawking-Page phase transitions between SAdS BH and pure AdS space are studied. The corresponding phase diagrams (with critical line defined by GB term coefficient and electric charge) are drawn. The possibility to account for higher derivative Maxwell terms is mentioned. In frames of proposed dS/CFT correspondence it is demonstrated that brane gravity maybe localized similarly to AdS/CFT. SdS BH thermodynamics in 5d Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonn…
Motivated by possible applications within the framework of anti-de Sitter gravity/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, charged black holes with AdS asymptotics, which are solutions to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in D dimensions, and whose electric field is described by a nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) are studied. For a topological static black hole ansatz, the field equations are exactly solved in terms of the electromagnetic stress tensor for an arbitrary NED Lagrangian, in any dimension D and for arbitrary positive values of Gauss-Bonnet coupling. In particular, this procedur…
We consider curvature-squared corrections to Einstein-Hilbert gravity action in the form of Gauss-Bonnet term in D>4 dimensions. In this theory, we study the thermodynamics of charged static black holes with anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics, and whose electric field is described by nonlinear electrodynamics (NED). These objects have received considerable attention in recent literature on gravity/gauge dualities. It is well-known that, within the framework of anti de-Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, there exists a nonvanishing Casimir contribution to the internal energy o…
We compute the entanglement temperature using the first law-like of thermodynamics, $ΔE=T_{ent} ΔS_{EE}$, up to Gauss-Bonnet term in the Jacobson-Myers entropy functional in any arbitrary spacetime dimension. The computation is done when the entangling region is the geometry of a slab. We also show that such a Gauss-Bonnet term, which becomes a total derivative, when the co-dimension two hypersurface is four dimensional, does not contribute to the finite term in the entanglement entropy. We observe that the Weyl-squared term does not contribute to the entanglement entropy. It is important to n…
We consider holographic entanglement entropy in higher derivative gravity theories. Recently Lewkowycz and Maldacena arXiv:1304.4926 have provided a method to derive the equations for the entangling surface from first principles. We use this method to compute the entangling surface in four derivative gravity. Certain interesting differences compared to the two derivative case are pointed out. For Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we show that in the regime where this method is applicable, the resulting equations coincide with proposals in the literature as well as with what follows from considerations of …
Recently, a practical approach to holographic renormalization has been developed based on the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation. Using a simple Einstein-scalar theory, we clarify that this approach does not conflict with the Hamiltonian constraint as it seems. Then we apply it to the holographic renormalization of massive gravity. We assume that the shift vector is falling off fast enough asymptotically. We derive the counterterms up to the boundary dimension d=4. Interestingly, we find that the conformal anomaly can even occur in odd dimensions, which is different from the Einstein gravity. We chec…
We utilize a novel method to study the thermodynamics of two dimensional type 0A black holes with constant RR flux. Our approach is based on the Hamilton-Jacobi method of deriving boundary counterterms. We demonstrate this approach by recovering the standard results for a well understood example, Witten's black hole. Between this example and the 0A black hole we find universal expressions for the entropy and black hole mass, as well as the infra-red divergence of the partition function. As a non-trivial check of our results we verify the first law of thermodynamics for these systems. Our resul…
We treat D-dimensional black holes with Killing horizon for extended Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We use Carlip method and impose boundary conditions on horizon what enables us to identify Virasoro algebra and evaluate its central charge and Hamiltonian eigenvalue. The Cardy formula allows then to calculate the number of states and thus provides for microscopic interpretation of entropy.
We derive the conformal constraints satisfied by classical vertices of a (Einstein) Gauss-Bonnet theory around flat space, in general dimensions and at $d=4$ (4d EGB). In $4d$ EGB they are obtained by a singular limit of the integral of the Euler-Poincarè density. Our analysis exploits the relation between this theory and the conformal anomaly action, which allows to uncover some interesting features of the GB vertex at cubic and quartic level. If we introduce a conformal decomposition of the metric, the resulting theory can be formulated in two different versions, which are regularization dep…
Recently the Petrov type I condition is introduced to reduce the degrees of freedom in the extrinsic curvature of a timelike hypersurface to the degrees of freedom in the dual Rindler fluid in Einstein gravity. In this paper we show that the Petrov type I condition holds for the solutions of vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity up to the second order in the relativistic hydrodynamic expansion. On the other hand, if imposing the Petrov type I condition and Hamiltonian constraint on a finite cutoff hypersurface, the stress tensor of the relativistic Rindler fluid in vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet …
We study the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of effective mechanical actions associated with holographic renormalization group flows when the field theory is put on the sphere and mass terms are turned on. Although the system is supersymmetric and it is described by a superpotential, Hamilton's characteristic function is not readily given by the superpotential when the boundary of AdS is curved. We propose a method to construct the solution as a series expansion in scalar field degrees of freedom. The coefficients are functions of the warp factor to be determined by a differential equation one obt…
We revise two regularization mechanisms for Lovelock gravity with AdS asymptotics. The first one corresponds to the Dirichlet counterterm method, where local functionals of the boundary metric are added to the bulk action on top of a Gibbons-Hawking-Myers term that defines the Dirichlet problem in gravity. The generalized Gibbons-Hawking term can be found in any Lovelock theory following the Myers' procedure to achieve a well-posed action principle for a Dirichlet boundary condition on the metric, which is proved to be equivalent to the Hamiltonian formulation for a radial foliation of spaceti…
We obtain exact solutions of charged asymptotically Lifshitz black holes in arbitrary (d+2) dimensions, generalizing the four dimensional solution investigated in 0908.2611[hep-th]. We find that both the conventional Hamiltonian approach and the recently proposed method for defining mass in non-relativistic backgrounds do not work for this specific example. Thus the mass of the black hole can only be determined by the first law of thermodynamics. We also obtain perturbative solutions in five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The ratio of shear viscosity over entropy density and the DC conducti…
We revisit the subject of holographic renormalization for asymptotically AdS spacetimes. For many applications of holography, one has to handle the divergences associated with the on-shell gravitational action. The brute force approach uses the Fefferman-Graham (FG) expansion near the AdS boundary to identify the divergences, but subsequent reversal of the expansion is needed to construct the infinite counterterms. While in principle straightforward, the method is cumbersome and application/reversal of FG is formally unsatisfactory. Various authors have proposed an alternative method based on …
Considering both the power Maxwell invariant source and the Einstein--Gauss--Bonnet gravity, we present a new class of static solutions yields a spacetime with a longitudinal nonlinear magnetic field. These horizonless solutions have no curvature singularity, but have a conic geometry with a deficit angle $δϕ$. In order to have vanishing electromagnetic field at spatial infinity, we restrict the nonlinearity parameter to $s>1/2$. Investigation of the energy conditions show that these solutions satisfy the null, weak and strong energy conditions simultaneously, for $s>1/2$, and the dominant ene…
We investigate the $D\rightarrow 4$ limit of the $D$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, where the limit is taken with $\tildeα=(D-4)\, α$ kept fixed and $α$ is the original Gauss-Bonnet coupling. Using the ADM decomposition in $D$ dimensions, we clarify that the limit is rather subtle and ambiguous (if not ill-defined) and depends on the way how to regularize the Hamiltonian or/and the equations of motion. To find a consistent theory in $4$ dimensions that is different from general relativity, the regularization needs to either break (a part of) the diffeomorphism invariance or lead to…
We construct concrete counterterms of the Balasubramanian-Kraus type for Einstein-scalar theories with designer gravity boundary conditions in AdS$_{4}$, so that the total action is finite on-shell and satisfy a well defined variational principle for an arbitrary scalar field potential. We focus on scalar fields with the conformal mass, $m^{2}=-2l^{-2}$, and show that the holographic mass matches the Hamiltonian mass for any boundary conditions. We compute the trace anomaly of the dual field theory in the generic case, as well as when there exist logarithmic branches of non-linear origin. As e…
The saddle point approximation of the path integral partition functions is an important way of deriving the thermodynamical properties of black holes. However, there are certain black hole models and some mathematically analog mechanical models for which this method cannot be applied directly. This is due to the fact that their action evaluated on a classical solution is not finite and its first variation does not vanish for all consistent boundary conditions. These problems can be dealt with by adding a counterterm to the classical action, which is a solution of the corresponding Hamilton-Jac…
In this paper, we investigate the effect of higher curvature corrections from Gauss-Bonnet gravity on the shadow of charged black holes in both $AdS$ and Minkowski spacetimes. The null geodesic equations are computed in $d=5$ spacetime dimensions by using the directions of symmetries and Hamilton-Jacobi equation. With the null geodesics in hand, we then proceed to evaluate the celestial coordinates ($α, β$) and the radius $R_s$ of the black hole shadow and represent it graphically. The effects of charge $Q$ of the black hole and the Gauss-Bonnet parameter $γ$ on the radius of the shadow $R_s$ …
In AdS/CFT corresponding, the UV divergence of generating functional on the field theory can be removed as the IR divergence in the gravity. This geometric process is well known as holographic renormalization. The standard method of holographic renormalization is based on the Fefferman-Graham expansion, which is strict and universal but technically cumbersome. To improve the technique, different methods have been proposed. Here we develop an alternative approach to holographic renormalization based on the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of gravity. Compared to previous approaches, its distinguishi…
With the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, we obtain the energy-momentum relation of a charged particle as it is absorbed by the Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole. On the basis of the energy-momentum relation at the event horizon, we investigate the first law, second law, and weak cosmic censorship conjecture in both the normal phase space and extended phase space. Our results show that the first law, second law as well as the weak cosmic censorship conjecture are valid in the normal phase space for all the initial states are black holes. However, in the extended phase space, the second law is violated for …
Three-dimensional gravity with a minimally coupled self-interacting scalar is considered. The fall-off of the fields at infinity is assumed to be slower than that of a localized distribution of matter, so that the asymptotic symmetry group is the conformal group. The counterterm Lagrangian needed to render the action finite is found by demanding that the action attain an extremum for the boundary conditions implied by the above fall-off of the fields at infinity. These counterterms explicitly depend on the scalar field. As a consequence, the Brown-York stress-energy tensor acquires a non trivi…
We first derive the Hamiltonian for Lovelock gravity and find that it takes the same form as in general relativity when written in terms of the Misner-Sharp mass function. We then minimally couple the action to matter fields to find Hamilton's equations of motion. These are gauge fixed to be in the Painlevé-Gullstrand co-ordinates and are well suited to numerical studies of black hole formation. We then use these equations of motion for the massless scalar field to study the formation of general relativistic black holes in four to eight dimensions and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes in five …
Based on the insight gained by many authors over the years on the structure of the Einstein-Hilbert, Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravity Lagrangians, we show how to derive -- in an elementary fashion -- their first-order, generalized "ADM" Lagrangian and associated Hamiltonian. To do so, we start from the Lovelock Lagrangian supplemented with the Myers boundary term, which guarantees a Dirichlet variational principle with a surface term of the form $π^{ij}δh_{ij}$, where $π^{ij}$ is the canonical momentum conjugate to the boundary metric $h_{ij}$. Then, the first-order Lagrangian density is obta…
The semi-classical approximation to black hole partition functions is not well-defined, because the classical action is unbounded and the first variation of the uncorrected action does not vanish for all variations preserving the boundary conditions. Both problems can be solved by adding a Hamilton-Jacobi counterterm. I show that the same problem and solution arises in quantum mechanics for half-binding potentials.
We investigate the thermodynamics of a general class of exact 4-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter hairy black hole solutions and show that, for a fixed temperature, there are small and large hairy black holes similar to the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. The large black holes have positive specific heat and so they can be in equilibrium with a thermal bath of radiation at the Hawking temperature. The relevant thermodynamic quantities are computed by using the Hamiltonian formalism and counterterm method. We explicitly show that there are first order phase transitions similar to the Hawk…
We consider five-dimensional AdS-axion-dilaton gravity with a Gauss-Bonnet term and find a solution of the equations of motion which corresponds to a black brane exhibiting a spatial anisotropy, with the source of the anisotropy being an axion field linear in one of the horizon coordinates. Our solution is static, regular everywhere on and outside the horizon, and asymptotically AdS. It is analytic and valid in a small anisotropy expansion, but fully non-perturbative in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We discuss various features of this solution and use it as a gravity dual to a strongly coupled an…
We revisit Carlip's approach to entropy counting. This analysis reemerged in a recently obtained Schwarzschild/CFT-correspondence as Sugawara-construction of a 2D stress-tensor. Here, for the example of a Schwarzschild black hole, we show how to single out diffeomorphisms forming in contrast to Carlip's analysis the full 2D local conformal algebra. We provide arguments, why their Hamiltonian generators are expected to be the symmetry generators of a possible conformal field theory describing the part of phase space responsible for black hole microstates. Then, we can infer central charges and …
The holographic renormalization group (RG) is reviewed in a self-contained manner. The holographic RG is based on the idea that the radial coordinate of a space-time with asymptotically AdS geometry can be identified with the RG flow parameter of the boundary field theory. After briefly discussing basic aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we explain how the notion of the holographic RG comes out in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We formulate the holographic RG based on the Hamilton-Jacobi equations for bulk systems of gravity and scalar fields, as was introduced by de Boer, Verlinde and Verlin…
