The identities of the main processes triggering and quenching star-formation in galaxies remain unclear. A key stage in evolution, however, appears to be represented by post-starburst galaxies. To investigate their impact on galaxy evolution, we initiated a multiwavelength study of galaxies with k+a spectral features in the COSMOS field. We examine a mass-selected sample of k+a galaxies at z=0.48-1.2 using the spectroscopic zCOSMOS sample. K+a galaxies occupy the brightest tail of the luminosity distribution. They are as massive as quiescent galaxies and populate the green valley in the colour versus luminosity (or stellar mass) distribution. A small percentage (<8%) of these galaxies have radio and/or X-ray counterparts (implying an upper limit to the SFR of ~8Msun/yr). Over the entire redshift range explored, the class of k+a galaxies is morphologically a heterogeneous population with a similar incidence of bulge-dominated and disky galaxies. This distribution does not vary with the strength of the Hdelta absorption line but instead with stellar mass in a way reminiscent of the well-known mass-morphology relation. Although k+a galaxies are also found in underdense regions, they appear to reside typically in a similarly rich environment as quiescent galaxies on a physical scale of ~2-8Mpc, and in groups they show a morphological early-to-late type ratio similar to the quiescent galaxy class. With the current data set, we do not find evidence of statistical significant evolution in either the number/mass density of k+a galaxies at intermediate redshift with respect to the local values, or the spectral properties. Those galaxies, which are affected by a sudden quenching of their star-formation activity, may increase the stellar mass of the red-sequence by up to a non-negligible level of ~10%.
We present a thorough characterization of a large sample of 183 extreme emission-line galaxies (EELGs) at redshift 0.11 < z < 0.93 selected from the 20k zCOSMOS Bright Survey because of their unusually large emission line equivalent widths. We use multiwavelength COSMOS photometry, HST-ACS I-band imaging and optical zCOSMOS spectroscopy to derive the main global properties of EELGs, such as sizes, masses, SFRs, reliable metallicities from both "direct" and "strong-line" methods. The EELGs are compact (R_50 ~ 1.3 kpc), low-mass (log(M*/Msol)~7-10) galaxies forming stars at unusually high specif…
The zCOSMOS-bright 10k spectroscopic sample reveals a strong environmental dependence of close kinematic galaxy pair fractions in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 1. The fraction of close pairs is three times higher in the top density quartile than in the lowest one. This environmental variation in pair fractions will translate into merger fractions since merger timescales are shown, based on Millennium simulation catalogs, to be largely independent of environment. While galactic properties of close kinematic pairs (morphologies and star formation rates) may seem to be non-representative of an und…
Post-starbursts are galaxies in transition from the blue cloud to the red sequence. Although they are rare today, integrated over time they may be an important pathway to the red sequence. This work uses SDSS, GALEX, and WISE observations to identify the evolutionary sequence from starbursts to fully quenched post-starbursts in the narrow mass range $\log M(M_\odot) = 10.3-10.7$, and identifies "transiting" post-starbursts which are intermediate between these two populations. In this mass range, $\sim 0.3\%$ of galaxies are starbursts, $\sim 0.1\%$ are quenched post-starbursts, and $\sim 0.5\%…
We have used optical Integral Field Spectroscopy in order to map the star formation history of the inner kiloparsec of the Post-Starburst Quasar (PSQ) J0330--0532 and to map its gas and stellar kinematics as well as the gas excitation. PSQs are hypothesized to represent a stage in the evolution of galaxies in which the star formation has been recently quenched due to the feedback of the nuclear activity, as suggested by the presence of the post-starburst population at the nucleus. We have found that the old stellar population (age $\ge$ 2.5 Gyr) dominates the flux at 5100 Å in the inner 0.26 k…
In a previous paper (Falkenberg, Kotulla & Fritze 2009, arXiv:0901.1665) we have shown that the classical definition of E+A galaxies excludes a significant number of post-starburst galaxies. We suggested that analysing broad-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is a more comprehensive method to select and distinguish poststarburst galaxies than the classical definition of measuring equivalent widths of (Hdelta) and [OII] lines. In this paper we will carefully investigate this new method and evaluate it by comparing our model grid of post-starburst galaxies to observed E+A galaxies from th…
Different compositions of galaxy types in the field in comparison to galaxy clusters as described by the morphology-density relation in the local universe is interpreted as a result of transformation processes from late- to early-type galaxies. This interpretation is supported by the Butcher-Oemler effect. We investigate E+A galaxies as an intermediate state between late-type galaxies in low density environments and early-type galaxies in high density environment to constrain the possible transformation processes. For this purpose we model a grid of post-starburst galaxies by inducing a burst …
This work uses multiscale environments and structures of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey as consistency checks of the evolution from starburst to quiescence at redshift $z < 0.2$. The environmental indicators include fixed aperture mass overdensities ($δ_{x\mathrm{Mpc}}$, $x \in \{0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8\}\,h^{-1}$Mpc), $k$-nearest neighbor distances, the tidal parameter, halo mass ($M_h$), and satellite/central classification. The residuals of specific star formation rates ($Δ\,\mathrm{SSFR}$) is used to select starbursts ($Δ\,\mathrm{SSFR} > 0.6\,$dex, $N \approx 8,\,600$). Quenched post-st…
We have used the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (LRIS) on the W.M. Keck I telescope to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy of a small sample of six post-starburst and three dusty-starburst galaxies in the rich cluster CL0016+16 at z=0.55. We use this to measure radial profiles of the Hdelta and OII3727 lines which are diagnostic probes of the mechanisms that give rise to the abrupt changes in star-formation rates in these galaxies. In the post-starburst sample we are unable to detect any radial gradients in the Hdelta line equivalent width - although one galaxy exhibits a gradient from…
We have obtained spectroscopic confirmation with Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/G141 of a first sizeable sample of nine quiescent galaxies at 2.4<z<3.3. Their average near-UV/optical rest-frame spectrum is characterized by low attenuation (Av$\sim$0.6 mag) and a strong Balmer break, larger than the 4000 A break, corresponding to a fairly young age of $\sim$300 Myr. This formally classifies a substantial fraction of classically selected quiescent galaxies at z $\sim$ 3 as post-starbursts, marking their convergence to the quenching epoch. The rapid spectral evolution with respect to z $\sim$ 1.5 qu…
We have selected Abell 3266 to search for ram-pressure induced star formation as a global property of a merging cluster. Abell 3266 (z = 0.0594) is a high mass cluster that features a high velocity dispersion, an infalling subcluster near to the line of sight, and a strong shock front. These phenomena should all contribute to making Abell 3266 an optimum cluster to see the global effects of RPS induced star formation. Using archival X-ray observations and published optical data, we cross-correlate optical spectral properties ([OII, H$β$]), indicative of starburst and post starburst, respective…
We study the growth of the red sequence through the number density and structural evolution of a sample of young and old quiescent galaxies at 0<z<2. The galaxies are selected from the NEWFIRM Medium-Band Survey (NMBS) in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field. We find a large population of massive young recently quenched ("post-starburst") galaxies at z>1 that are almost non-existent at z<1; their number density is 5 x 10^{-5} Mpc^{-3} at z=2, whereas it is a factor of 10 less at z=0.5. The observed number densities of young and old quiescent galaxies at z>1 are consistent with a simple m…
We investigate radio-mode AGN activity among post-starburst galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to determine whether AGN feedback may be responsible for the cessation of star formation. Based on radio morphology and radio-loudness from the FIRST and NVSS data, we separate objects with radio activity due to an AGN from ongoing residual star formation. Of 513 SDSS galaxies with strong A-star spectra, 12 objects have 21-cm flux density above 1 mJy. These galaxies do not show optical AGN emission lines. Considering that the lifetime of radio emission is much shorter than the typical time-sc…
The MBH - σ\ast relation has been studied extensively for local galaxies, but to date there have been scarce few direct measurements of stellar velocity dispersions for systems beyond the local universe. We investigate black hole and host galaxy properties of six "post-starburst quasars" at z \sim 0.3. Spectra of these objects simultaneously display features from the active nucleus including broad emission lines and a host galaxy Balmer absorption series indicative of the post-starburst stellar population. These are the first measurements of σ\ast in such objects, and we significantly increase…
We consider the morphology, stellar populations, structure and AGN activity of 10 post-starburst (K+A) galaxies with HST observations, full spectral coverage in the optical, spectral energy distributions from 0.2 to 160 $μ$m, X-ray and radio data. Our results show that the PSG phenomenon is related to mergers and interactions, and that star formation was likely triggered during close passes prior to final coalescence. We performed a detailed qualitative analysis of the observed light distribution, including low-surface brightness tidal features and color profiles, in high-resolution multi-band…
Using $J$ and $K_s$ band imaging obtained as part of the IMACS Cluster Building Survey (ICBS) we measure Sérsic indices for 2160 field and cluster galaxies at $0.31 < z < 0.54$. Using both mass- and magnitude-limited samples, we compare the distributions for spectroscopically determined passive, continuously starforming, starburst, and poststarburst systems and show that previously established spatial and statistical connections between these types extend to their gross morphologies. Outside of cluster cores, we find close structural ties between starburst and continuously starforming, as well…
We present new deep spectroscopic observations of 0.05--0.5 L_* galaxies in one cluster (cl1232.5-1250) drawn from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS) sample, at z = 0.54. The new data extend the spectroscopy already available for this cluster by about 1 magnitude. The cluster has a large fraction of passive galaxies and exhibits a well defined and relatively tight colour-magnitude relation. Among spectroscopic members, only six galaxies are classified as `post-starburst' (k+a). For another EDisCS cluster at similar redshift and with as deep spectroscopy, no member is found to have a k+a s…
(Abridged) We analyze the environments and galactic properties (morphologies and star-formation histories) of a sample of 153 close kinematic pairs in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 1 identified in the zCOSMOS-bright 10k spectroscopic sample of galaxies. Correcting for projection effects, the fraction of close kinematic pairs is three times higher in the top density quartile than in the lowest one. This translates to a three times higher merger rate because the merger timescales are shown, from mock catalogues based on the Millennium simulation, to be largely independent of environment once the …
The Cl1604 supercluster at $z \sim 0.9$ is one of the most extensively studied high redshift large scale structures, with more than 500 spectroscopically confirmed members. It consists of 8 clusters and groups, with members numbering from a dozen to nearly a hundred, providing a broad range of environments for investigating the large scale environmental effects on galaxy evolution. Here we examine the properties of 48 post-starburst galaxies in Cl1604, comparing them to other galaxy populations in the same supercluster. Incorporating photometry from ground-based optical and near-infrared imagi…
We present our new deep optical imaging and long-slit spectroscopy for Arp 220 that is the archetypical ULIRG in the local universe. Our sensitive Ha imaging has newly revealed large-scale, Ha absorption, i.e., post-starburst regions in this merger; one is found in the eastern superbubble and the other is in the two tidal tails that are clearly reveled in our deep optical imaging. The size of Ha absorption region in the eastern bubble is 5 kpc x 7.5 kpc and the observed Ha equivalent widths are ~2 A +- 0.2 A. The sizes of the northern and southern Ha-absorption tidal tails are ~5 kpc x 10 kpc …
Stellar population synthesis (SPS) models are a key ingredient of many galaxy evolution studies. Unfortunately, the models are still poorly calibrated for certain stellar evolution stages. Of particular concern is the treatment of the thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phase, as different implementations lead to systematic differences in derived galaxy properties. Post-starburst galaxies are a promising calibration sample, as TP-AGB stars are thought to be most prominently visible during this phase. Here, we use post-starburst galaxies in the NEWFIRM medium-band survey to asses…
We present the discovery of a z=0.65 low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) quasar in a post-starburst galaxy in data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and spectroscopy from the Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES). LoBAL quasars are a minority of all BALs, and rarer still is that this object also exhibits broad FeII (an FeLoBAL) and Balmer absorption. This is the first BAL quasar that has signatures of recently truncated star formation, which we estimate ended about 40 Myr ago. The characteristic signatures of an FeLoBAL require high column densities, which could be explained by the em…
We present Keck/LRIS-B spectra for a sample of ten AEGIS X-ray AGN host galaxies and thirteen post-starburst galaxies from SDSS and DEEP2 at 0.2<z<0.8 in order to investigate the presence, properties, and influence of outflowing galactic winds at intermediate redshifts. We focus on galaxies that either host a low-luminosity AGN or have recently had their star formation quenched to test whether these galaxies have winds of sufficient velocity to potentially clear gas from the galaxy. We find, using absorption features of Fe II, Mg II, and Mg I, that six of the ten (60%) X-ray AGN host galaxies …
We present Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) low-resolution spectra of 16 spectroscopically selected post-starburst quasars (PSQs) at z ~ 0.3. The optical spectra of these broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) simultaneously show spectral signatures of massive intermediate-aged stellar populations making them good candidates for studying the connections between AGNs and their hosts. The resulting spectra show relatively strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 and 11.3\micron and a very weak silicate feature, indicative of ongoing star formation and low dust …
Quenched post-starburst galaxies (QPSBs) are a rare but important class of galaxies that show signs of rapid cessation or recent rejuvenation of star formation. A recent observation shows that about half of QPSBs have large amounts of cold gas. This molecular CO sample is, however, too small and is not without limitations. Our work aims to verify previous results by applying a new method to study a uniformly selected sample, more than 10 times larger. In particular, we present detailed analysis of H$α$/H$β$ ratios of face-on QPSBs at $z = 0.02 - 0.15$ and with $M_\star = 10^{10}-10^{11}\,M_\od…
A tidal disruption event (TDE) occurs when a star is destroyed by the strong tidal shear of a massive black hole (MBH). The accumulation of TDE observations over the last years has revealed that post-starburst galaxies are significantly overrepresented in the sample of TDE hosts. Here we address the post-starburst preference by investigating the decline of TDE rates in a Milky-Way like nuclear stellar cluster featuring either a monochromatic (1 M$\odot$) or a complete, evolved stellar mass function. In the former case, the decline of TDE rates with time is very mild, and generally up to a fact…
We explore the inter-relationships between mass, star-formation rate and environment in the SDSS, zCOSMOS and other surveys. The differential effects of mass and environment are completely separable to z ~ 1, indicating that two distinct processes are operating, "mass-quenching" and "environment-quenching". Environment-quenching, at fixed over-density, evidently does not change with epoch to z ~ 1, suggesting that it occurs as large-scale structure develops in the Universe. The observed constancy of the mass-function shape for star-forming galaxies, demands that the mass-quenching of galaxies …
We propose that synchronized triggering of star formation in gas-rich galaxies is possible during major mergers of cluster of galaxies, based on new numerical simulations of the time evolution of the physical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) during such a merger event. Our numerical simulations show that the external pressure of the ICM in which cluster member galaxies are embedded, can increase significantly during cluster merging. As such, efficient star formation can be triggered in gas-rich members as a result of the strong compression of their cold gas by the increased pressure…

We present optical spectroscopy of a sample of 38 post-starburst quasars (PSQs) at z ~ 0.3, 29 of which have morphological classifications based on Hubble Space Telescope imaging. These broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) possess the spectral signatures of massive intermediate-aged stellar populations making them potentially useful for studying connections between nuclear activity and host galaxy evolution. We model the spectra in order to determine the ages and masses of the host stellar populations, and the black hole masses and Eddington fractions of the AGNs. Our model components inc…
The total infrared (IR) luminosity is very useful for estimating the star formation rate (SFR) of galaxies, but converting the IR luminosity into an SFR relies on assumptions that do not hold for all galaxies. We test the effectiveness of the IR luminosity as an SFR indicator by applying it to synthetic spectral energy distributions generated from three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of isolated disc galaxies and galaxy mergers. In general, the SFR inferred from the IR luminosity agrees well with the true instantaneous SFR of the simulated galaxies. However, for the major mergers in wh…
We have used deep integral field spectroscopy obtained with the GMOS instrument on Gemini-North to determine the spatial distribution of the post-starburst stellar population in four luminous E+A galaxies at z<0.04. We find all four galaxies have centrally-concentrated gradients in the young stellar population contained within the central ~1 kpc. This is in agreement with the Balmer line gradients found in local low luminosity E+A galaxies. The results from higher redshift (z~0.1) samples of luminous E+A galaxies have been varied, but in general have found the post-starburst signature to be ex…
We present BayeSED, a general purpose tool for doing Bayesian analysis of SEDs by using whatever pre-existing model SED libraries or their linear combinations. The artificial neural networks (ANNs), principal component analysis (PCA) and multimodal nested sampling (MultiNest) techniques are employed to allow a highly efficient sampling of posterior distribution and the calculation of Bayesian evidence. As a demonstration, we apply this tool to a sample of hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRGs). The Bayesian evidences obtained for a pure Starburst, a pure AGN, and a linear combination of Star…
Post-starburst galaxies, or E+A galaxies, are characterized by optical spectra showing strong Balmer absorption lines, indicating a young stellar population, and little or no emission lines, implying no active star formation. These galaxies are interpreted as a transitional population between star-forming, disk-dominated galaxies and spheroidal quiescent, non-star forming galaxies. Here, we present single dish HI 21-cm emission line measurements of a sample of eleven of these galaxies at redshifts z<0.05. We detect H I emission in six of the E+A galaxies. In combination with earlier studies, t…
We present a study of local post-starburst galaxies (PSGs) using the photometric and spectroscopic observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the results from the Galaxy Zoo project. We find that the majority of our local PSG population have neither early- nor late- type morphologies but occupy a well-defined space within the colour-stellar mass diagram, most notably, the low-mass end of the "green valley" below the transition mass thought to be the mass division between low-mass star-forming galaxies and high-mass passively-evolving bulge-dominated galaxies. Our analysis sugges…
We present new multi-configuration VLA HI spectral line observations of the M81 group dIrr post-starburst galaxy DDO 165. The HI morphology is complex, with multiple column density peaks surrounding a large region of very low HI surface density that is offset from the center of the stellar distribution. The bulk of the neutral gas is associated with the southern section of the galaxy; a secondary peak in the north contains ~15% of the total HI mass. These components appear to be kinematically distinct, suggesting that either tidal processes or large-scale blowout have recently shaped the ISM o…
Post-Starburst Quasars (PSQs) are hypothesized to represent a stage in the evolution of massive galaxies in which the star formation has been recently quenched due to the feedback of the nuclear activity. In this paper our goal is to test this scenario with a resolved stellar population study of the PSQ J0210-0903, as well as of its emitting gas kinematics and excitation. We have used optical Integral Field Spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini GMOS instrument at a velocity resolution of ~120 km/s and spatial resolution of ~0.5 kpc. We find that old stars dominate the luminosity (at 4700 Å) in…
We reveal cosmic star-formation history obscured by dust using deep infrared observation with the AKARI. A continuous filter coverage in the mid-IR wavelength (2.4, 3.2, 4.1, 7, 9, 11, 15, 18, and 24um) by the AKARI satellite allows us to estimate restframe 8um and 12um luminosities without using a large extrapolation based on a SED fit, which was the largest uncertainty in previous work. We found that restframe 8um (0.38<z<2.2), 12um (0.15<z<1.16), and total infrared (TIR) luminosity functions (LFs) (0.2<z<1.6) constructed from the AKARI NEP deep data, show a continuous and strong evolution t…
(Abridged) We present a spatially-resolved near-UV/optical study of NGC 4150, using the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Previous studies of this early-type galaxy (ETG) indicate that it has a large reservoir of molecular gas, exhibits a kinematically decoupled core (likely indication of recent merging) and strong, central H_B absorption (indicative of young stars). The core of NGC 4150 shows ubiquitous near-UV emission and remarkable dusty substructure. Our analysis shows this galaxy to lie in the near-UV green valley, and its pixel-by-pixel photometry exhibits …
We present the first results from a near-IR spectroscopic campaign of the Cl1604 supercluster at z~0.9 and the cluster RX J1821.6+6827 at z~0.82 to investigate the nature of [OII] 3727A emission in cluster galaxies at high redshift. Of the 401 members in the two systems, 131 galaxies have detectable [OII] emission with no other signs of current star-formation, as well as strong absorption features indicative of a well-established older stellar population. The combination of these features suggests that the primary source of [OII] emission in these galaxies is not the result of star-formation, …
We study the cool gas around a galaxy at z = 0.4729 using Keck/LRIS spectroscopy of a bright (B = 21.7) background galaxy at z = 0.6942 at a transverse distance of 16.5/h_70 kpc. The background galaxy spectrum reveals strong FeII, MgII, MgI, and CaII absorption at the redshift of the foreground galaxy, with a MgII 2796 rest equivalent width of 3.93 +/- 0.08 Angstroms, indicative of a velocity width exceeding 400 km/s. Because the background galaxy is large (> 4/h_70 kpc), the high covering fraction of the absorbing gas suggests that it arises in a spatially extended complex of cool clouds with…
We present VLT-ISAAC NIR spectro-photometric observations of 16 post-starburst (PSB) galaxies aimed at constraining the debated influence of TP-AGB stars on the SED of galaxies with stellar ages of 0.5-2 Gyr, critical for high-redshift studies. PSB galaxies have negligible on-going star formation and a SED dominated by the stars formed in a recent (<2 Gyr) burst. By spectroscopically selecting PSB galaxies with mean luminosity-weighted ages between 0.5 and 1.5 Gyr and a broad range of metallicities, we explore the parameter space around the peak of the relative energy output of TP-AGB stars. C…
