We have obtained spectroscopic confirmation with Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/G141 of a first sizeable sample of nine quiescent galaxies at 2.4<z<3.3. Their average near-UV/optical rest-frame spectrum is characterized by low attenuation (Av$\sim$0.6 mag) and a strong Balmer break, larger than the 4000 A break, corresponding to a fairly young age of $\sim$300 Myr. This formally classifies a substantial fraction of classically selected quiescent galaxies at z $\sim$ 3 as post-starbursts, marking their convergence to the quenching epoch. The rapid spectral evolution with respect to z $\sim$ 1.5 quiescent galaxies is not matched by an increase of residual star-formation, as judged from the weak detection of [O II]3727A emission, pointing to a flattening of the steep increase in gas fractions previously seen from z $\sim$ 0 to 1.8. However, radio 3GHz stacked emission implies either much stronger dust-obscured star formation or substantial further evolution in radio-mode AGN activity with respect to z $\sim$ 1.5.
We study the growth of the red sequence through the number density and structural evolution of a sample of young and old quiescent galaxies at 0<z<2. The galaxies are selected from the NEWFIRM Medium-Band Survey (NMBS) in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field. We find a large population of massive young recently quenched ("post-starburst") galaxies at z>1 that are almost non-existent at z<1; their number density is 5 x 10^{-5} Mpc^{-3} at z=2, whereas it is a factor of 10 less at z=0.5. The observed number densities of young and old quiescent galaxies at z>1 are consistent with a simple m…
Post-starburst or "E+A" galaxies are rapidly transitioning from star-forming to quiescence. While the current star formation rate of post-starbursts is already at the level of early type galaxies, we recently discovered that many have large CO-traced molecular gas reservoirs consistent with normal star forming galaxies. These observations raise the question of why these galaxies have such low star formation rates. Here we present an ALMA search for the denser gas traced by HCN (1--0) and HCO+ (1--0) in two CO-luminous, quiescent post-starburst galaxies. Intriguingly, we fail to detect either m…
Three billion years after the big bang (at redshift z=2), half of the most massive galaxies were already old, quiescent systems with little to no residual star formation and extremely compact with stellar mass densities at least an order of magnitude larger than in low redshift ellipticals, their descendants. Little is known about how they formed, but their evolved, dense stellar populations suggest formation within intense, compact starbursts 1-2 Gyr earlier (at 3<z<6). Simulations show that gas-rich major mergers can give rise to such starbursts which produce dense remnants. Sub-millimeter s…
We investigate the co-evolution of black-hole-accretion-rate (BHAR) and star-formation-rate (SFR) in $1.5<z<2.5$ galaxies displaying a greater diversity of star-forming properties compared to previous studies. We combine X-ray stacking and far-IR photometry of stellar mass-limited samples of normal star-forming, starburst and quiescent/quenched galaxies in the COSMOS field. We corroborate the existence of a strong correlation between BHAR (i.e. the X-ray luminosity, L_X), and stellar mass (M*) for normal star-forming galaxies, although find a steeper relation than previously reported. We find …
Post starburst E+A galaxies are thought to have experienced a significant starburst that was quenched abruptly. Their disturbed, bulge-dominated morphologies suggest that they are merger remnants. We present ESI/Keck observations of SDSS J132401.63+454620.6, a post starburst galaxy at redshift z = 0.125, with a starburst that started 400 Myr ago, and other properties, like star formation rate (SFR) consistent with what is measured in ultra luminous infrared galaxies (ULRIGs). The galaxy shows both zero velocity narrow lines, and blueshifted broader Balmer and forbidden emission lines (FWHM=135…
We present structural measurements of 145 spectroscopically selected intermediate-redshift (z$\sim$0.7), massive ($M_\star \sim 10^{11} \ M_\odot$) post-starburst galaxies from the SQuIGG$\vec{L}$E Sample measured using wide-depth Hyper Suprime-Cam i-band imaging. This deep imaging allows us to probe the sizes and structures of these galaxies, which we compare to a control sample of star forming and quiescent galaxies drawn from the LEGA-C Survey. We find that post-starburst galaxies systematically lie $\sim0.1$ dex below the quiescent mass-size (half-light radius) relation, with a scatter of …
Optically-compact star-forming galaxies (SFGs) have been proposed as immediate progenitors of quiescent galaxies, although their origin and nature are debated. Were they formed in slow secular processes or in rapid merger-driven starbursts? Addressing this question would provide fundamental insight into how quenching occurs. We explore the location of the general population of galaxies with respect to fundamental star-forming and structural relations, identify compact SFGs based on their stellar core densities, and study three diagnostics of the burstiness of star formation: 1) Star formation …
One key problem in astrophysics is understanding how and why galaxies switch off their star formation, building the quiescent population that we observe in the local Universe. From the GAMA and VIPERS surveys, we use spectroscopic indices to select quiescent and candidate transition galaxies. We identify potentially rapidly transitioning post-starburst galaxies, and slower transitioning green-valley galaxies. Over the last 8 Gyrs the quiescent population has grown more slowly in number density at high masses (M$_*>10^{11}$M$_\odot$) than at intermediate masses (M$_*>10^{10.6}$M$_\odot$). There…
We present the evolution in the number density and stellar mass functions of photometrically selected post-starburst galaxies in the UKIDSS Deep Survey (UDS), with redshifts of 0.5<z<2 and stellar masses logM>10. We find that this transitionary species of galaxy is rare at all redshifts, contributing ~5% of the total population at z~2, to <1% by z~0.5. By comparing the mass functions of quiescent galaxies to post-starburst galaxies at three cosmic epochs, we show that rapid quenching of star formation can account for 100% of quiescent galaxy formation, if the post-starburst spectral features a…
Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) have been found to show a preference for post-starburst (PS) and quiescent Balmer-strong (QBS) galaxies. This preference can be used to help find TDEs in transient surveys. But what other transients might "contaminate" such a search, and by how much? We examine all reported transients coincident with the centers of galaxies in the French & Zabludoff (2018) catalog of spectroscopically confirmed PS and QBS galaxies and photometrically identified PS and QBS galaxy candidates. We find that TDEs and Type Ia supernovae (SNe) are the only types of transients classified…
This lecture reviews the fundamental physical processes involved in star formation in galaxy interactions and mergers. Interactions and mergers often drive intense starbursts, but the link between interstellar gas physics, large scale interactions, and active star formation is complex and not fully understood yet. Two processes can drive starbursts: radial inflows of gas can fuel nuclear starbursts, triggered gas turbulence and fragmentation can drive more extended starbursts in massive star clusters with high fractions of dense gas. Both modes are certainly required to account for the observe…
Dust-enshrouded, starbursting, submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at $z \geq 3$ have been proposed as progenitors of $z \geq 2$ compact quiescent galaxies (cQGs). To test this connection, we present a detailed spatially resolved study of the stars, dust and stellar mass in a sample of six submillimeter-bright starburst galaxies at $z \sim 4.5$. The stellar UV emission probed by HST is extended, irregular and shows evidence of multiple components. Informed by HST, we deblend Spitzer/IRAC data at rest-frame optical finding that the systems are undergoing minor mergers, with a typical stellar mass rat…

Recent observations have successfully detected [O III] $88.3\,{\rm μm}$ and [C II] $157.6\,{\rm μm}$ lines from galaxies in the early Universe with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). Combining cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and radiative transfer calculations, we present relations between the metal line emission and galaxy evolution at $z=6-15$. We find that galaxies during their starburst phases have high [O III] luminosity of $\sim 10^{42}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$. Once supernova feedback quenches star formation, [O III] luminosities rapidly decrease and continue to be zero for $\sim 1…
We investigate the relationship between the quenching of star formation and the structural transformation of massive galaxies, using a large sample of photometrically-selected post-starburst galaxies in the UKIDSS UDS field. We find that post-starburst galaxies at high-redshift ($z>1$) show high Sérsic indices, significantly higher than those of active star-forming galaxies, but with a distribution that is indistinguishable from the old quiescent population. We conclude that the morphological transformation occurs before (or during) the quenching of star formation. Recently quenched galaxies a…
This Letter examines how the sizes, structures, and color gradients of galaxies change along the quiescent sequence. Our sample consists of ~400 quiescent galaxies at $1.0\le z\le2.5$ and $10.1 \le \log{M_*/M_\odot}\le11.6$ in three CANDELS fields. We exploit deep multi-band HST imaging to derive accurate mass profiles and color gradients, then use an empirical calibration from rest-frame UVJ colors to estimate galaxy ages. We find that -- contrary to previous results -- the youngest quiescent galaxies are not significantly smaller than older quiescent galaxies at fixed stellar mass. These `po…
We present morphological analyses of Post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) at $0.7<z<0.9$ in the COSMOS field. We fitted ultraviolet to mid-infrared multi-band photometry of objects with $i<24$ from COSMOS2020 catalogue with population synthesis models assuming non-parametric, piece-wise constant function of star formation history, and selected 94 those galaxies that have high specific star formation rates (SSFRs) of more than $10^{-9.5}$ yr$^{-1}$ in 321--1000 Myr before observation and an order of magnitude lower SSFRs within recent 321 Myr. We devised a new non-parametric morphological index which…

We use deep, spatially resolved spectroscopy from the LEGA-C Survey to study radial variations in the stellar population of 17 spectroscopically-selected post-starburst (PSB) galaxies. We use spectral fitting to measure two Lick indices, $Hδ_A$ and $Fe4383$, and find that, on average, PSB galaxies have radially decreasing $Hδ_A$ and increasing $Fe4383$ profiles. In contrast, a control sample of quiescent, non-PSB galaxies in the same mass range shows outwardly increasing $Hδ_A$ and decreasing $Fe4383$. The observed gradients are weak ($\approx-0.2$ Å/$R_e$), mainly due to seeing convolution. A…
Post-starburst galaxies can be identified via the presence of prominent Hydrogen Balmer absorption lines in their spectra. We present a comprehensive study of the origin of strong Balmer lines in a volume-limited sample of 189 galaxies with $0.01<z<0.05$, $\log(\mbox{M}_{\star}/\mbox{M}_{\odot})>9.5$ and projected axis ratio $b/a>0.32$. We explore their structural properties, environments, emission lines and star formation histories, and compare them to control samples of star-forming and quiescent galaxies, and simulated galaxy mergers. Excluding contaminants, in which the strong Balmer lines…
We present a photometric analysis of star and star cluster (SC) formation in a high-resolution simulation of a dwarf galaxy starburst that allows the formation of individual stars to be followed. Previous work demonstrated that the properties of the SCs formed in the simulation are in good agreement with observations. In this paper, we create mock spectral energy distributions and broad-band photometric images using the radiative transfer code SKIRT 9. We test several observational star formation rate (SFR) tracers and find that $24$ $μ$m, total infrared and H$α$ trace the underlying SFR durin…
This work uses multiscale environments and structures of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey as consistency checks of the evolution from starburst to quiescence at redshift $z < 0.2$. The environmental indicators include fixed aperture mass overdensities ($δ_{x\mathrm{Mpc}}$, $x \in \{0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8\}\,h^{-1}$Mpc), $k$-nearest neighbor distances, the tidal parameter, halo mass ($M_h$), and satellite/central classification. The residuals of specific star formation rates ($Δ\,\mathrm{SSFR}$) is used to select starbursts ($Δ\,\mathrm{SSFR} > 0.6\,$dex, $N \approx 8,\,600$). Quenched post-st…
We present the relation between galaxy structure and spectral type, using a K-selected galaxy sample at 0.5<z<2.0. Based on similarities between the UV-to-NIR spectral energy distributions, we classify galaxies into 32 spectral types. The different types span a wide range in evolutionary phases, and thus -- in combination with available CANDELS/F160W imaging -- are ideal to study the structural evolution of galaxies. Effective radii (R_e) and Sersic parameters (n) have been measured for 572 individual galaxies, and for each type, we determine R_e at fixed stellar mass by correcting for the mas…
We investigate 'activity' and 'quiescence' in galaxies at relatively high redshifts by modelling the line(and continuum) spectra of each object. The models account consistently for photoionization and shocks. We claim that the starburst effective temperature, the flux from an AGN, and the shock velocity are critical to activity. The results confirm that two sample galaxies show intense starburst activity with temperatures reaching Ts=2x10^5K and shock velocities Vs> 250 km/s, while for the remaining galaxies of our sample the models show quiescent star formation with Ts< 7x10^4K. A Seyfert 2 l…
The identities of the main processes triggering and quenching star-formation in galaxies remain unclear. A key stage in evolution, however, appears to be represented by post-starburst galaxies. To investigate their impact on galaxy evolution, we initiated a multiwavelength study of galaxies with k+a spectral features in the COSMOS field. We examine a mass-selected sample of k+a galaxies at z=0.48-1.2 using the spectroscopic zCOSMOS sample. K+a galaxies occupy the brightest tail of the luminosity distribution. They are as massive as quiescent galaxies and populate the green valley in the colour…
We present a new method to classify the broad band optical-NIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies using three shape parameters (super-colours) based on a Principal Component Analysis of model SEDs. As well as providing a compact representation of the wide variety of SED shapes, the method allows for easy visualisation of information loss and biases caused by the incomplete sampling of the rest-frame SED as a function of redshift. We apply the method to galaxies in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey with 0.9<z<1.2, and confirm our classifications by stacking rest-frame optical spectra f…
Recent studies have shown that starburst dwarf galaxies have steeply rising rotation curves in their inner parts, pointing to a close link between the intense star formation and a centrally concentrated mass distribution (baryons and dark matter). More quiescent dwarf irregulars typically have slowly rising rotation curves, although some "compact" irregulars with steep, inner rotation curves exist. We analyze archival Hubble Space Telescope images of two nearby "compact" irregular galaxies (NGC 4190 and NGC 5204), which were selected solely on the basis of their dynamical properties and their …
Our understanding of the redshift $z>3$ galaxy population relies largely on samples selected using the popular "dropout" technique, typically consisting of UV-bright galaxies with blue colors and prominent Lyman breaks. As it is currently unknown if these galaxies are representative of the massive galaxy population, we here use the FourStar Galaxy Evolution (ZFOURGE) Survey to create a stellar mass-limited sample at $z=3-4$. Uniquely, ZFOURGE uses deep near-infrared medium-bandwidth filters to derive accurate photometric redshifts and stellar population properties. The mass-complete sample con…
The physical mechanisms that quench star formation, turning blue star-forming galaxies into red quiescent galaxies, remain unclear. In this Letter, we investigate the role of gas supply in suppressing star formation by studying the molecular gas content of post-starburst galaxies. Leveraging the wide area of the SDSS, we identify a sample of massive intermediate-redshift galaxies that have just ended their primary epoch of star formation. We present ALMA CO(2-1) observations of two of these post-starburst galaxies at z~0.7 with M* ~ 2x10^11 Msun. Their molecular gas reservoirs of (6.4 +/- 0.8)…
We present spatially-resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) 870 $μ$m dust continuum maps of six massive, compact, dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at $z\sim2.5$. These galaxies are selected for their small rest-frame optical sizes ($r_{\rm e, F160W}\sim1.6$ kpc) and high stellar-mass densities that suggest that they are direct progenitors of compact quiescent galaxies at $z\sim2$. The deep observations yield high far-infrared (FIR) luminosities of L$_{\rm IR}=10^{12.3-12.8}$ L$_{\odot}$ and star formation rates (SFRs) of SFR$=200-700$ M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, consistent w…
Strong bursts of star formation in galaxies may be triggered either by internal or external mechanisms. We study the distribution and kinematics of the HI gas in the outer regions of 18 nearby starburst dwarf galaxies, that have accurate star-formation histories from HST observations of resolved stellar populations. We find that starburst dwarfs show a variety of HI morphologies, ranging from heavily disturbed HI distributions with major asymmetries, long filaments, and/or HI-stellar offsets, to lopsided HI distributions with minor asymmetries. We quantify the outer HI asymmetry for both our s…
Most galaxies follow well-defined scaling relations of metallicity (O/H), star formation rate (SFR), and stellar mass. However, low-metallicity starbursts, rare in the Local Universe but more common at high redshift, deviate significantly from these scaling relations. On the "main sequence" of star formation, these galaxies have high SFR for a given M*; and on the mass-metallicity relation, they have excess M* for their low metallicity. In this paper, we characterize O/H, M*, and SFR for these deviant "low-metallicity starbursts", selected from a sample of ~1100 galaxies, spanning almost two o…
We report interferometric measurements of [NII] 205 um fine-structure line emission from a representative sample of three galaxies at z=5-6 using the Atacama Large (sub)Millimeter Array (ALMA). These galaxies were previously detected in [CII] and far-infrared continuum emission and span almost two orders of magnitude in star formation rate (SFR). Our results show at least two different regimes of ionized inter-stellar medium properties for galaxies in the first billion years of cosmic time, separated by their L_[CII]/L_[NII] ratio. We find extremely low [NII] emission compared to [CII] (L_ [CI…
We present a Bayesian full-spectral-fitting analysis of 75 massive ($M_* > 10^{10.3} M_\odot$) UVJ-selected galaxies at redshifts of $1.0 < z < 1.3$, combining extremely deep rest-frame ultraviolet spectroscopy from VANDELS with multi-wavelength photometry. By the use of a sophisticated physical plus systematic uncertainties model, constructed within the Bagpipes code, we place strong constraints on the star-formation histories (SFHs) of individual objects. We firstly constrain the stellar mass vs stellar age relationship, finding a steep trend towards earlier average formation with increasing…
We report interferometric imaging of [CII] and OH emission toward the center of the galaxy protocluster associated with the z=5.3 submillimeter galaxy (SMG) AzTEC-3, using the Atacama Large (sub)Millimeter Array (ALMA). We detect strong [CII], OH, and rest-frame 157.7 um continuum emission toward the SMG. The [CII] emission is distributed over a scale of 3.9 kpc, implying a dynamical mass of 9.7 x 10^10 Msun, and a star formation rate (SFR) surface density of Sigma_SFR = 530 Msun/yr/kpc2. This suggests that AzTEC-3 forms stars at Sigma_SFR approaching the Eddington limit for radiation pressure…
We use $>$9400 $\log(m/M_{\odot})>10$ quiescent and star-forming galaxies at $z\lesssim2$ in COSMOS/UltraVISTA to study the average size evolution of these systems, with focus on the rare, ultra-massive population at $\log(m/M_{\odot})>11.4$. The large 2-square degree survey area delivers a sample of $\sim400$ such ultra-massive systems. Accurate sizes are derived using a calibration based on high-resolution images from the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that, at these very high masses, the size evolution of star-forming and quiescent galaxies is almost indistinguishable in terms of normaliza…
Post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) have recently and rapidly quenched their star-formation, thus they are an important way to understand how galaxies transition from star-forming late-types to quiescent early-types. The recent discovery of large cold gas reservoirs in PSBs calls into question the theory that galaxies must lose their gas to become quiescent. Optical Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) surveys have revealed two classes of PSBs: central PSBs with central quenching regions and ring PSBs with quenching in their outskirts. We analyze a sample of 13 nearby (z < 0.1) PSBs with spatially res…
Star formation rates (SFR) are compared as determined from mid-infrared 7.7 um PAH luminosity [SFR(PAH)], from 1.4 GHz radio luminosity [SFR(radio)], and from far ultraviolet luminosity [SFR(UV)] for a sample of 287 starburst galaxies with z < 0.5 having Spitzer IRS observations. The previously adopted relation log [SFR(PAH)] = log [vLv(7.7 um)] - 42.57+-0.2, for SFR in solar masses per year and vLv(7.7 um) the luminosity at the peak of the 7.7 um PAH feature in ergs per s, is found to agree with SFR(radio). Comparing with SFR(UV) determined independently from ultraviolet observations of the s…
Post-starburst galaxies are in the transitional stage between blue, star-forming galaxies and red, quiescent galaxies, and therefore hold important clues for our understanding of galaxy evolution. In this paper, we systematically searched for and identified a large sample of post-starburst galaxies from the spectroscopic dataset of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 9. In total, we found more than 6000 objects with redshifts between $z\sim0.05$ and $z\sim1.3$, making this the largest sample of post-starburst galaxies in the literature. We calculated the luminosity function of the…
Quenched post-starburst galaxies (QPSBs) are a rare but important class of galaxies that show signs of rapid cessation or recent rejuvenation of star formation. A recent observation shows that about half of QPSBs have large amounts of cold gas. This molecular CO sample is, however, too small and is not without limitations. Our work aims to verify previous results by applying a new method to study a uniformly selected sample, more than 10 times larger. In particular, we present detailed analysis of H$α$/H$β$ ratios of face-on QPSBs at $z = 0.02 - 0.15$ and with $M_\star = 10^{10}-10^{11}\,M_\od…
Post-starbursts (PSBs) are candidate for rapidly transitioning from star-bursting to quiescent galaxies. We study the molecular gas evolution of PSBs at z ~ 0.03 - 0.2. We undertook new CO (2-1) observations of 22 Seyfert PSBs candidates using the ARO Submillimeter Telescope. This sample complements previous samples of PSBs by including green valley PSBs with Seyfert-like emission, allowing us to analyze for the first time the molecular gas properties of 116 PSBs with a variety of AGN properties. The distribution of molecular gas to stellar mass fractions in PSBs is significantly different tha…
Using the IllustrisTNG cosmological galaxy formation simulations, we analyze the physical properties of young quiescent galaxies at z=2 with stellar masses above 10^10.5 solar masses. This key population provides an unaltered probe into the evolution of galaxies from star-forming to quiescent and has been recently targeted by several observational studies. Young quiescent galaxies in the simulations do not appear unusually compact, in tension with observations, but they show unique age gradients that are qualitatively consistent with the observed color gradients. In particular, more than half …

We present evidence for a strong relationship between galaxy size and environment for the quiescent population in the redshift range 1 < z < 2. Environments were measured using projected galaxy overdensities on a scale of 400 kpc, as determined from ~ 96,000 K-band selected galaxies from the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). Sizes were determined from ground-based K-band imaging, calibrated using space-based CANDELS HST observations in the centre of the UDS field, with photometric redshifts and stellar masses derived from 11-band photometric fitting. From the resulting size-mass relation, we con…
We report the source size distribution, as measured by ALMA millimetric continuum imaging, of a sample of 13 AzTEC-selected submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at z_photo ~ 3-6. Their infrared luminosities and star-formation rates (SFR) are L_IR ~ 2-6 x 10^12 L_sun and ~ 200-600 M_sun yr-1, respectively. The size of z ~ 3-6 SMGs ranges from 0".10 to 0".38 with a median of 0".20+0".03-0".05 (FWHM), corresponding to a median circularized effective radius (Rc,e) of 0.67+0.13-0.14 kpc, comparable to the typical size of the stellar component measured in compact quiescent galaxies at z ~ 2 (cQGs) --- R ~ …
We present a measurement of the intrinsic space density of intermediate redshift ($z\sim0.5$), massive ($M_{*} \sim 10^{11} \ \text{M}_{\odot}$), compact ($R_{e} \sim 100$ pc) starburst ($Σ_{SFR} \sim 1000 \ \text{M}_{\odot} \ \text{yr}^{-1} \text{kpc}^{-1}$) galaxies with tidal features indicative of them having undergone recent major mergers. A subset of them host kiloparsec scale, $>1000 \ \text{km}\ \text{s}^{-1}$ outflows and have little indication of AGN activity, suggesting that extreme star formation can be a primary driver of large-scale feedback. The aim for this paper is to calculat…
We investigate the stellar populations for a sample of 24 quiescent galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 using deep rest-frame optical spectra obtained with Keck MOSFIRE. By fitting templates simultaneously to the spectroscopic and photometric data, and exploring a variety of star formation histories, we obtain robust measurements of median stellar ages and residual levels of star formation. After subtracting the stellar templates, the stacked spectrum reveals the Halpha and [NII] emission lines, providing an upper limit on the ongoing star formation rate of 0.9 +/- 0.1 Msun/yr. By combining the MOSFIRE …
We present the first study of the large-scale clustering of post-starburst (PSB) galaxies in the high redshift Universe ($0.5<z<3.0$). We select $\sim4000$ PSB galaxies photometrically, the largest high-redshift sample of this kind, from two deep large-scale near-infrared surveys: the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) DR11 and the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS). Using angular cross-correlation techniques, we estimate the halo masses for this large sample of PSB galaxies and compare them with quiescent and star-forming galaxies selected in the same fields. We find that low-mass, low-redshift ($0…
