We have used the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (LRIS) on the W.M. Keck I telescope to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopy of a small sample of six post-starburst and three dusty-starburst galaxies in the rich cluster CL0016+16 at z=0.55. We use this to measure radial profiles of the Hdelta and OII3727 lines which are diagnostic probes of the mechanisms that give rise to the abrupt changes in star-formation rates in these galaxies. In the post-starburst sample we are unable to detect any radial gradients in the Hdelta line equivalent width - although one galaxy exhibits a gradient from one side of the galaxy to the other. The absence of Hdelta gradients in these galaxies is consistent with their production via interaction with the intra-cluster medium, however, our limited spatial sampling prevents us from drawing robust conclusions. All members of the sample have early type morphologies, typical of post-starburst galaxies in general, but lack the high incidence of tidal tails and disturbances seen in local field samples. This argues against a merger origin and adds weight to a scenario where truncation by the intra-cluster medium is at work. The post-starburst spectral signature is consistent over the radial extent probed with no evidence of OII3727 emission and strong Hdelta absorption at all radii i.e. the post-starburst classification is not an aperture effect. In contrast the dusty-starburst sample shows a tendency for a central concentration of OII3727 emission. This is most straightforwardly interpreted as the consequence of a central starburst. However, other possibilities exist such as a non-uniform dust distribution (which is expected in such galaxies) and/or a non-uniform starburst age distribution. The sample exhibit late type and irregular morphologies.
We have used deep integral field spectroscopy obtained with the GMOS instrument on Gemini-North to determine the spatial distribution of the post-starburst stellar population in four luminous E+A galaxies at z<0.04. We find all four galaxies have centrally-concentrated gradients in the young stellar population contained within the central ~1 kpc. This is in agreement with the Balmer line gradients found in local low luminosity E+A galaxies. The results from higher redshift (z~0.1) samples of luminous E+A galaxies have been varied, but in general have found the post-starburst signature to be ex…
[abridged] Aims. We observed the outer parts of NGC 1569 and NGC 4449, two of the closest and strongest dwarf starburst galaxies in the local universe, to characterize their stellar density and populations, and obtain new insights into the structure, formation, and evolution of starburst galaxies and galaxy halos. Methods. We obtained HST/WFPC2 images between 5 and 8 scale radii from the center, along the intermediate and minor axes. We performed point-source photometry to determine color magnitude diagrams of I vs. V-I. We compared the results at different radii, including also our prior HST/…
The kinematics of galaxies provide valuable insights in their physics and assembly history. Kinematics are governed not only by the gravitational potential, but also by merger events and stellar feedback processes such as stellar winds and supernova explosions. Aims. We aim at identifying what governs the kinematics in a sample of SDSS selected nearby starburst galaxies, by obtaining spatially resolved measurements of the gas and stellar kinematics. We obtain near-infrared integral field K-band spectroscopy with VLT/SINFONI of 15 compact starburst galaxies. We derive the integrated as well as …
We use archival HST observations of resolved stellar populations to derive the star formation histories (SFHs) of 18 nearby starburst dwarf galaxies. In this first paper we present the observations, color-magnitude diagrams, and the SFHs of the 18 starburst galaxies, based on a homogeneous approach to the data reduction, differential extinction, and treatment of photometric completeness. We adopt a star formation rate (SFR) threshold normalized to the average SFR of the individual system as a metric for classifying starbursts in SFHs derived from resolved stellar populations. This choice facil…
We reveal cosmic star-formation history obscured by dust using deep infrared observation with the AKARI. A continuous filter coverage in the mid-IR wavelength (2.4, 3.2, 4.1, 7, 9, 11, 15, 18, and 24um) by the AKARI satellite allows us to estimate restframe 8um and 12um luminosities without using a large extrapolation based on a SED fit, which was the largest uncertainty in previous work. We found that restframe 8um (0.38<z<2.2), 12um (0.15<z<1.16), and total infrared (TIR) luminosity functions (LFs) (0.2<z<1.6) constructed from the AKARI NEP deep data, show a continuous and strong evolution t…
We present submillimetre observations of the z=3.653 quasar SDSS160705+533558 together with data in the optical and infrared. The object is unusually bright in the far-IR and submm with an IR luminosity of ~10^14 L_sun. We ascribe this luminosity to a combination of AGN and starburst emission, with the starburst forming stars at a rate of a few thousand solar masses per year. Submillimetre Array (SMA) imaging observations with a resolution ~1" show that the submm (850 micron) emission is extended on scales of 10--35kpc and is offset from the optical position by ~10 kpc. This morphology is diss…
We present the results of deep high resolution imaging performed with ACS/HRC@HST in the most active region of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4214. We resolved the stellar populations of five Young Massive Clusters and their surrounding galactic field. The star formation history of this region is characterized by two main bursts occurred within the last 500 Myr, with the oldest episode spread out across an area larger than that covered by the most recent one. The ages derived for the analysed clusters cover a wide range between 6.4<log(t/yr)<8.1 in agreement with those predicted by recent ana…
We map the spatial distribution of recent star formation over a few x 100 Myr timescales in fifteen starburst dwarf galaxies using the location of young blue helium burning stars identified from optically resolved stellar populations in archival Hubble Space Telescope observations. By comparing the star formation histories from both the high surface brightness central regions and the diffuse outer regions, we measure the degree to which the star formation has been centrally concentrated during the galaxies' starbursts, using three different metrics for the spatial concentration. We find that t…
We present an XMM-Newton analysis of the X-ray spectra of 39 clusters of galaxies at 0.4<z<1.4, covering a temperature range of 1.5<=kT<=11 keV. We performed a spatially resolved spectral analysis to study how the abundance evolves with redshift not only through a single emission measure performed on the whole cluster but also spatially resolving the cluster emission. We do not observe a statistically significant (>2sigma) abundance evolution with redshift. The most significant deviation from no evolution (90% c.l.) is observed in the emission from the whole cluster (r<0.6r500), that could be …
We present VIMOS integral field spectroscopic observations of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) pair IRAS 19254-7245 (the Superantennae). We resolve H alpha, [N II], [O I], and [S II] emission both spatially and spectroscopically and separate the emission into multiple velocity components. We identify spectral line emission characteristic of star formation associated with both galaxies, broad spectral line emission from the nucleus of the southern progenitor, and potential outflows with shock-excited spectral features near both nuclei. We estimate that <~10% of the 24 micron flux densi…

We explore the self-regulation of star formation using a large suite of high resolution hydrodynamic simulations, focusing on molecule-dominated regions (galactic centers and [U]LIRGS) where feedback from star formation drives highly supersonic turbulence. In equilibrium the total midplane pressure, dominated by turbulence, must balance the vertical weight of the ISM. Under self-regulation, the momentum flux injected by feedback evolves until it matches the vertical weight. We test this flux balance in simulations spanning a range of parameters, including surface density $Σ$, momentum injected…
The colliding galaxy pair NGC 2207/IC 2163, at a distance of ~39 Mpc, was observed with Chandra, and an analysis reveals 28 well resolved X-ray sources, including 21 ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with Lx > 10^39 erg/s, as well as the nucleus of NGC 2207. The number of ULXs is comparable with the largest numbers of ULXs per unit mass in any galaxy yet reported. In this paper we report on these sources, and quantify how their locations correlate with the local star formation rates seen in spatially-resolved star formation rate density images that we have constructed using combinations of Ga…
We present initial results from a new 440-ks Chandra HETG GTO observation of the canonical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. The proximity of NGC 1068, together with Chandra's superb spatial and spectral resolution, allow an unprecedented view of its nucleus and circumnuclear NLR. We perform the first spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the `ionization cone' in any AGN, and use the sensitive line diagnostics offered by the HETG to measure the ionization state, density, and temperature at discrete points along the ionized NLR. We argue that the NLR takes the form of outflowing pho…

Strong bursts of star formation in galaxies may be triggered either by internal or external mechanisms. We study the distribution and kinematics of the HI gas in the outer regions of 18 nearby starburst dwarf galaxies, that have accurate star-formation histories from HST observations of resolved stellar populations. We find that starburst dwarfs show a variety of HI morphologies, ranging from heavily disturbed HI distributions with major asymmetries, long filaments, and/or HI-stellar offsets, to lopsided HI distributions with minor asymmetries. We quantify the outer HI asymmetry for both our s…
