Two-dimensional Maxwell-Vlasov equilibria with finite electric fields, axial ("toroidal") plasma flow and isotropic pressure are constructed in plane geometry by using the quasineutrality condition to express the electrostatic potential in terms of the vector potential. Then for Harris-type distribution functions, Ampere's equation becomes of Liouville type and can be solved analytically. As an example, a periodic "cat-eyes" steady state consisting of a row of magnetic islands is presented. The method can be extended to (toroidal) axisymmetric equilibria.
Vlasov equilibria of axisymmetric plasmas with vacuum toroidal magnetic field can be reduced, up to a selection of ions and electrons distributions functions, to a Grad-Shafranov-like equation. Quasineutrality narrow the choice of the distributions functions. In contrast to two-dimensional translationally symmetric equilibria whose electron distribution function consists of a displaced Maxwellian, the toroidal equilibria need deformed Maxwellians. In order to be able to carry through the calculations, this deformation is produced by means of either a Heaviside step function or an exponential f…
A new constant of motion for helically symmetric equilibria in the vicinity of the magnetic axis is obtained in the framework of Vlasov theory. In view of this constant of motion the Vlasov theory is compared with drift kinetic and gyrokinetic theories near axis. It turns out that as in the case of axisymmetric equilibria [H. Tasso and G. N. Throumoulopoulos, Phys. Plasmas 18, 064507 (2011)] the Vlasov current density thereon can differ appreciably from the drift kinetic and gyrokinetic current densities. This indicates some limitation on the implications of reduced kinetic theories, in partic…
We study the stability of spatially periodic, nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson equilibria as an eigenproblem in a Fourier-Hermite basis (in the space and velocity variables, respectively) of finite dimension, $N$. When the advection term in Vlasov equation is dominant, the convergence with $N$ of the eigenvalues is rather slow, limiting the applicability of the method. We use the method of spectral deformation introduced in [J. D. Crawford and P. D. Hislop, Ann. Phys. 189, 265 (1989)] to selectively damp the continuum of neutral modes associated with the advection term, thus accelerating convergence. …
By choosing appropriate deformed Maxwellian ion and electron distribution functions depending on the two particle constants of motion, i.e. the energy and toroidal angular momentum, we reduce the Vlasov axisymmetric equilibrium problem for quasineutral plasmas to a transcendental Grad-Shafranov-like equation. This equation is then solved numerically under the Dirichlet boundary condition for an analytically prescribed boundary possessing a lower X-point to construct tokamak equilibria with toroidal sheared ion flow and anisotropic pressure. Depending on the deformation of the distribution func…
The hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations is suitable to describe a magnetized plasma at scales of the order of or larger than proton kinetic scales. An exact stationary solution is presented by revisiting previous results with a uniform-density shear flow, directed either parallel or perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field, and by adapting the solution to the hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell model. A quantitative characterization of the equilibrium distribution function is provided by studying both analytically and numerically the temperature anisotropy and gyrotropy and the heat flux. In both cas…
We propose an efficient method to compute Lyapunov exponents and Lyapunov eigenvectors of long-range interacting many-particle systems, whose dynamics is described by the Vlasov equation. We show that an expansion of a distribution function using Hermite modes (in momentum variable) and Fourier modes (in configuration variable) converges fast if an appropriate scaling parameter is introduced and identified with the inverse of the system temperature. As a consequence, dynamics and linear stability properties of many-particle states, both in the close-to and in the far-from equilibrium regimes c…
The conditions for the existence of force-free non-relativistic translationally invariant one-dimensional (1D) Vlasov-Maxwell (VM) equilibria are investigated using general properties of the 1D VM equilibrium problem. As has been shown before, the 1D VM equilibrium equations are equivalent to the motion of a pseudo-particle in a conservative pseudo-potential, with the pseudo-potential being proportional to one of the diagonal components of the plasma pressure tensor. The basic equations are here derived in a different way to previous work. Based on this theoretical framework, a necessary condi…
A family of self-consistent collisionless distribution functions for the force-free Harris sheet is presented. This family includes the distribution function recently found by Harrison and Neukirch [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 135003 (2009)] as well as distribution functions with a different dependence on the particle energy, but with the same dependence on the canonical momenta. It is shown generally that the other distribution functions in the family give rise to the same pressure function and thus to the same current density and magnetic field as the known distribution function, provided certain …
The NASA Magnetospheric Multiscale mission has made in situ diffusion region and kinetic-scale resolution measurements of asymmetric magnetic reconnection for the first time, in the Earth's magnetopause. The principal theoretical tool currently used to model collisionless asymmetric reconnection is particle-in-cell simulations. Many particle-in-cell simulations of asymmetric collisionless reconnection start from an asymmetric Harris-type magnetic field but with distribution functions that are not exact equilibrium solutions of the Vlasov equation. We present new and exact equilibrium solutions…
We study the theory of Vlasov-Maxwell equilibria in one spatial dimension, as well as its application to current sheet and flux tube models. The 'inverse problem' is that of determining a Vlasov-Maxwell equilibrium distribution function self-consistent with a given magnetic field. We develop the theory of inversion using expansions in Hermite polynomials of the canonical momenta. Sufficient conditions for the convergence of a Hermite expansion are found, given a pressure tensor. For large classes of DFs, we prove that non-negativity of the distribution function is contingent on the magnetisati…
We consider the theory and application of a solution method for the inverse problem in collisionless equilibria, namely that of calculating a Vlasov-Maxwell equilibrium for a given macroscopic (fluid) equilibrium. Using Jeans' Theorem, the equilibrium distribution functions are expressed as functions of the constants of motion, in the form of a Maxwellian multiplied by an unknown function of the canonical momenta. In this case it is possible to reduce the inverse problem to inverting Weierstrass transforms, which we achieve by using expansions over Hermite polynomials. A sufficient condition o…
We present the solution to an inverse problem arising in the context of finding a distribution function for a specific collisionless plasma equilibrium. The inverse problem involves the solution of two integral equations, each having the form of a Weierstrass transform. We prove that inverting the Weierstrass transform using Hermite polynomials leads to convergent infinite series. We also comment on the non-negativity of the distribution function, with more detail on this in Allanson $\textit{et al., Journal of Plasma Physics}$, vol. 82 (03), 2016. Whilst applied to a specific magnetic field, …
The tangential layers are characterized by a bulk plasma velocity and a magnetic field that are perpendicular to the gradient direction. They have been extensively described in the frame of the Magneto-Hydro-Dynamic (MHD) theory. But the MHD theory does not look inside the transition region if the transition has a size of a few ion gyroradii. A series of kinetic tangential equilibria, valid for a collisionless plasma is presented. These equilibria are exact analytical solutions of the Maxwell-Vlasov equations. The particle distribution functions are sums of an infinite number of elementary fun…
This review presents an upgraded wave theory adapted to the high fluctuation level of driven realistic i.e. non-idealized plasmas. Above all, this means giving up the well-known concept of a linear wave theory in favor of a thoroughly nonlinear theory. Based on the author's early publication (H. Schamel, Plasma Phys. 14 (1972) 905) and supported by recent Vlasov-Poisson simulations of realistic noisy plasmas, an extended framework is presented which not only covers the essential features of coherent hole structures, but which also enables to make the necessary corrections to the current wave t…
The gyrokinetic Vlasov-Maxwell equations are cast as an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system. The gyrokinetic Poisson bracket is remarkably simple and similar to the Morrison-Marsden-Weinstein bracket for the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. By identifying many of the bracket's Casimirs, this work enables (i) the derivation of gyrokinetic equilibrium variational principles and (ii) the application of the energy-Casimir method and the method of dynamically-accessible variations to study stability properties of gyrokinetic equilibria.
We consider the linear stability problem for a 3D cylindrically symmetric equilibrium of the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system that describes a collisionless plasma. For an equilibrium whose distribution function decreases monotonically with the particle energy, we obtained a linear stability criterion in our previous paper. Here we prove that this criterion is sharp; that is, there would otherwise be an exponentially growing solution to the linearized system. Therefore for the class of symmetric Vlasov-Maxwell equilibria, we establish an energy principle for linear stability. We also treat t…
In this paper the first non-linear force-free Vlasov-Maxwell equilibrium is presented. One component of the equilibrium magnetic field has the same spatial structure as the Harris sheet, but whereas the Harris sheet is kept in force balance by pressure gradients, in the force-free solution presented here force balance is maintained by magnetic shear. Magnetic pressure, plasma pressure and plasma density are constant. The method used to find the equilibrium is based on the analogy of the one-dimensional Vlasov-Maxwell equilibrium problem to the motion of a pseudo-particle in a two-dimensional c…
Vlasov-Maxwell equilibria are described by the self-consistent solutions of the time-independent Maxwell equations for the real-space dynamics of electromagnetic fields, and the Vlasov equation for the phase-space dynamics of particle distributions in a collisionless plasma. These two systems (macroscopic and microscopic) are coupled via the source terms in Maxwell's equations, which are sums of velocity-space 'moment' integrals of the particle distribution function. This paper considers 'the inverse problem for collisionless equilibria' (IPCE), viz. "given information regarding the real-space…
We consider the Vlasov-Maxwell equations with one spatial direction and two momenta, one in the longitudinal direction and one in the transverse direction. By solving the Jacobi identity, we derive reduced Hamiltonian fluid models for the density, the fluid momenta and the second order moments, related to the pressure tensor. We also provide the Casimir invariants of the reduced Poisson bracket. We show that the linearization of the equations of motion around homogeneous equilibria reproduces some essential feature of the kinetic model, the Weibel instability.
We consider a reduced dynamics for the first four fluid moments of the onedimensional Vlasov-Poisson equation, namely, the fluid density, fluid velocity, pressure and heat flux. This dynamics depends on an equation of state to close the system. This equation of state (closure) connects the fifth order moment-related to the kurtosis in velocity of the Vlasov distribution-with the first four moments. By solving the Jacobi identity, we derive an equation of state which ensures that the resulting reduced fluid model is Hamiltonian. We show that this Hamiltonian closure allows symmetric homogeneous…
A largely unsolved theoretical issue in controlled fusion research is the consistent \textit{kinetic} treatment of slowly-time varying plasma states occurring in collisionless and magnetized axisymmetric plasmas. The phenomenology may include finite pressure anisotropies as well as strong toroidal and poloidal differential rotation, characteristic of Tokamak plasmas. Despite the fact that physical phenomena occurring in fusion plasmas depend fundamentally on the microscopic particle phase-space dynamics, their consistent kinetic treatment remains still essentially unchalleged to date. The goal…
We discuss a family of Vlasov-Maxwell equilibrium distribution functions for current sheet equilibria that are intermediate cases between the Harris sheet and the force-free (or modified) Harris sheet. These equilibrium distribution functions have potential applications to space and astrophysical plasmas. The existence of these distribution function had been briefly discussed in by Harrison and Neukirch 2009, but here it is shown that their approach runs into problems in the limit where the guide field goes to zero. The nature of this problem will be discussed and an alternative approach will …
Slow solitary positive-potential peaks sustained by trapped electron deficit in a plasma with asymmetric ion velocity distributions are in principle asymmetric, involving a potential change across the hole. It is shown theoretically how to construct such asymmetric electron holes, thus providing fully consistent solutions of the one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson equation for a wide variety of prescribed background ion velocity distributions. Because of ion reflection forces experienced by the hole, there is generally only one discrete slow hole velocity that is in equilibrium. Moreover the equili…
