We study extremal discs for the Kobayashi metric. Inspired by work of Lempert on strongly convex domains, we present results on strongly pseudoconvex domains.
We also consider a useful biholomorphic invariant, inspired by the Kobayashi (and Carathéodory) metric, and prove several new results about biholomorphic equivalence of domains. Some useful results about automorphism groups of complex domains are also established.
We construct families of convex domains that are biholomorphic to bounded domains, but not bounded convex domains. This is accomplished by finding an obstruction related to the Gromov hyperbolicity of the Kobayashi metric.
The Fridman invariant, which is a biholomorphic invariant on Kobayashi hyperbolic manifolds, can be seen as the dual of the much studied squeezing function. We compare this pair of invariants by showing that they are both equally capable of determining the boundary geometry of a bounded domain if their boundary behaviour is apriori known.
We first give a sufficient condition, issued from pluripotential theory, for an unbounded domain in the complex Euclidean space $\mathbb C^n$ to be Kobayashi hyperbolic. Then, we construct an example of a rigid pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb C^3$ that is Kobayashi hyperbolic and has a nonempty core. In particular, this domain is not biholomorphic to a bounded domain in $\mathbb C^3$ and the mentioned above sufficient condition for Kobayashi hyperbolicity is not necessary.
Let $M$ be a complex manifold which admits an exhaustion by open subsets $M_j$ each of which is biholomorphic to a fixed domain $Ω\subset \mathbb C^n$. The main question addressed here is to describe $M$ in terms of $Ω$. Building on work of Fornaess--Sibony, we study two cases namely, $M$ is Kobayashi hyperbolic and the other being the corank one case in which the Kobayashi metric degenerates along one direction. When $M$ is Kobayashi hyperbolic, its complete description is obtained when $Ω$ is one of the following domains -- (i) a smoothly bounded Levi corank one domain, (ii) a smoothly bound…
Let $\widehat{\mathcal {S}}_g^{α, β}(\mathbb{B}^n)$ be a subclass of normalized biholomorphic mappings defined on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n,$ which is closely related to the starlike mappings. Firstly, we obtain the growth theorem for $\widehat{\mathcal {S}}_g^{α, β}(\mathbb{B}^n)$. Secondly, we apply the growth theorem and a new type of the boundary Schwarz lemma to establish the distortion theorems of the Fréchet-derivative type and the Jacobi-determinant type for this subclass, and the distortion theorems with $g$-starlike mapping (resp. starlike mapping) are partly established also. A…
In this paper we introduce a new class of domains -- log-type convex domains, which have no boundary regularity assumptions. Then we will localize the Kobayashi metric in log-type convex subdomains. As an application, we prove a local version of continuous extension of rough isometric maps between two bounded domains with log-type convex Dini-smooth boundary points. Moreover we prove that the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T_{g,n}$ is not biholomorphic to any bounded pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb C^{3g-3+n}$ which is locally log-type convex near some boundary point.
We study the higher order Kobayashi pseudometric introduced by Yu. We first obtain estimates of this pseudometric in a special pseudoconvex domain in $\C^3$. We then study the structure of the higher order extremal discs and their connection with the standard extremal discs for the Kobayashi metric.
Let $D\subset \mathbb C^n$ be a bounded domain. A pair of distinct boundary points $\{p,q\}$ of $D$ has the visibility property provided there exist a compact subset $K_{p,q}\subset D$ and open neighborhoods $U_p$ of $p$ and $U_q$ of $q$, such that the real geodesics for the Kobayashi metric of $D$ which join points in $U_p$ and $U_q$ intersect $K_{p,q}$. Every Gromov hyperbolic convex domain enjoys the visibility property for any couple of boundary points. The Goldilocks domains introduced by Bharali and Zimmer and the log-type domains of Liu and Wang also enjoy the visibility property. In th…
We show that if the Segre varieties of a strictly pseudoconvex hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^2$ are extremal discs for the Kobayashi metric, then that hypersurface has to be locally spherical. In particular, this gives yet another characterization of the unit sphere in terms of two important invariant families of objects coinciding.
We construct a convex and strongly pseudoconvex Kobayashi positive Finsler metric on a vector bundle $E$ under the assumption that the symmetric power of the dual $S^kE^*$ has a Griffiths negative $L^2$-metric for some $k$. The proof relies on the negativity of direct image bundles and the Minkowski inequality for norms. As a corollary, we show that given a strongly pseudoconvex Kobayashi positive Finsler metric, one can upgrade to a \textit{convex} Finsler metric with the same property. We also give an extremal characterization of Kobayashi curvature for Finsler metrics.
