Using fluorescent microthermal imaging we have investigated the origin of "two-step" behavior in I-V curves for a current-carrying YBa_2Cu_3O_x superconducting bridge. High resolution temperature maps reveal that as the applied current increases the first step in the voltage corresponds to local dissipation (hot spot), whereas the second step is associated with onset of global dissipation throughout the entire bridge. A quantitative explanation of the experimental results is provided by a simple model for an inhomogeneous superconductor, assuming that the hot spot nucleates at a location with slightly depressed superconducting properties.
A noticeable magnetoresistive effect has been observed on ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (FSF) microbridges based on diluted ferromagnetic PdFe alloy containing as small as 1% magnetic atoms. Microstructuring of the FSF trilayers does not destroy the effect: the most pronounced curves were obtained on the smallest bridges of 6-8 um wide and 10-15 um long. Below the superconducting transition we are able to control the critical current of microbridges by switching between P and AP orientations of magnetizations of PdFe layers. The operation of FSF-bridge as a magnetic switch is demonstr…
Superconducting topological systems formed by a strong 3D topological insulator (TI) in proximity to a conventional $s$-wave superconductor (SC) have been intensely studied as they may host Majorana zero modes. However, there are limited experimental realizations of TI-SC systems in which robust superconducting pairing is induced on the surface states of the TI and a topological superconducting state is established. Here, we fabricate a novel TI-SC system by depositing, via focused ion beam, tungsten (W) nanoscale clusters on the surface of TI Bi$_{0.91}$Sb$_{0.09}$. We find that the resulting…

Recent experiments on superconducting cavities have found that under large radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields the quality factor can improve with increasing field amplitude, a so-called "anti-Q slope." Linear theories of dissipation break down under these extreme conditions and are unable to explain this behavior. We numerically solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations at the surface of a superconductor in a parallel AC magnetic field, finding that at large fields there are quasiparticle surface states with energies below the bulk value of the superconducting gap. As the field oscilla…

Microwave Surface Impedance Measurements of the Electronic State and Dissipation of Magnetic Vortices in Superconducting Iron-Based LiFeAs Single Crystals
The superconducting circuits involving Josephson junction offer macroscopic quantum two-level system (qubit) which are coupled to cavity resonators and are operated via microwave signals. In this work, we study the dynamics of superconducting qubits coupled to a cavity with including dissipation in a subkelvin temperature domain. In the first step, a classical Finite Element Method is used to simulate the cavities and basic circuit elements to model Josephson junctions. Then the quantization of the circuit is done to obtain the full Hamiltonian of the system using energy partition ratios of th…
As superconductors are cooled below their critical temperature, stray magnetic flux can become trapped in regions that remain normal. The presence of trapped flux facilitates dissipation of ac current in a superconductor, leading to losses in superconducting elements of microwave devices. In type II superconductors, dissipation is well-understood in terms of the dynamics of vortices hosting a single flux quantum. In contrast, the ac response of type I superconductors with trapped flux has not received much attention. Building on Andreev's early work [Sov. Phys. JETP 24, 1019 (1967)], here we s…
The presence of magnetic fields and/or transport currents can cause penetration of vortices in superconductors. Their motion leads to dissipation and resistive state arises, which in turn strongly affects the performance of superconducting devices such as single-photon and single-electron detectors. Therefore, an understanding of the dissipation mechanisms in mesoscopic superconductors is not only of fundamental value but also very important for further technological advances. In the present work, we analyzed the contributions and interplay of the dissipative mechanisms due to the locally indu…
