I will briefly survey the most important results obtained so far on chaos in partial differential equations. I will also survey progresses and make some comments on Navier-Stokes equations and turbulence.
We propose a simple method of constructing a system of differential equations of chaotic behavior based on the regression only from a scalar observable time-series data. The estimated system enables us to reconstruct invariant sets and statistical properties as well as to infer short time-series. Our successful modeling relies on the introduction of a set of Gaussian radial basis functions to capture local structure. The proposed method is used to construct a system of ordinary differential equations whose orbit reconstructs a time-series of a variable of the well-known Lorenz system as a simp…
What is new on computed Lorenz strange attractors: chaos or numerical errors?

Collective chaos is shown to emerge, via a period-doubling cascade, from quasiperiodic partial synchronization in a population of identical inhibitory neurons with delayed global coupling. This system is thoroughly investigated by means of an exact model of the macroscopic dynamics, valid in the thermodynamic limit. The collective chaotic state is reproduced numerically with a finite population, and persists in the presence of weak heterogeneities. Finally, the relationship of the model's dynamics with fast neuronal oscillations is discussed.

The recent paper claims that mean characteristics of chaotic orbits differ from the corresponding values averaged over the set of unstable periodic orbits, embedded in the chaotic attractor. We demonstrate that the alleged discrepancy is an artifact of the improper averaging: Since the natural measure is non-uniformly distributed over the attractor, different periodic orbits make different contributions into the time averages. As soon as the corresponding weights are accounted for, the discrepancy disappears.

This paper investigates and confirms one advantageous function of a power packet dispatching system, which has been proposed by authors' group with being apart from the conventional power distribution system. Here is focused on the function to establish the security of power packet dispatching for prohibiting not only information but also power of power packet from being stolen by attackers. For the purpose of protecting power packets, we introduce a simple encryption of power packets before sending them. Encryption scheme based on chaotic signal is one possibility for this purpose. In this paper, a novel inversion mechanism of functional extrema model via the differential evolution algorithms(DE), is proposed to exactly identify time-delays fractional order chaos systems. With the functional extrema model, the unknown time-delays, systematic parameters and fractional-orders of the fractional chaos, are converted into independent variables of a non-negative multiple modal functions' minimization, as a particular case of the functional extrema model's minimization. And the objective of the model is to find their optimal combinations by DE in the predefined intervals, such …
The presence of a nonattractive chaotic set, also called chaotic saddle, in phase space implies the appearance of a finite time kind of chaos that is known as transient chaos. For a given dynamical system in a certain region of phase space with transient chaos, trajectories eventually abandon the chaotic region escaping to an external attractor, if no external intervention is done on the system. In some situations, this attractor may involve an undesirable behavior, so the application of a control in the system is necessary to avoid it. Both, the nonattractive nature of transient chaos and eve…
We consider discrete-time dynamical systems with a linear relaxation dynamics that are driven by deterministic chaotic forces. By perturbative expansion in a small time scale parameter, we derive from the Perron-Frobenius equation the corrections to ordinary Fokker-Planck equations in leading order of the time scale separation parameter. We present analytic solutions to the equations for the example of driving forces generated by N-th order Chebychev maps. The leading order corrections are universal for N larger or equal to 4 but different for N=2 and N=3. We also study diffusively coupled Che…

The results of this study are continuation of the research of Poincaré chaos initiated in papers (Akhmet M, Fen MO. Commun Nonlinear Sci Numer Simulat 2016;40:1-5; Akhmet M, Fen MO. Turk J Math, doi:10.3906/mat-1603-51, accepted). We focus on the construction of an unpredictable function, continuous on the real axis. As auxiliary results, unpredictable orbits for the symbolic dynamics and the logistic map are obtained. By shaping the unpredictable function as well as Poisson function we have performed the first step in the development of the theory of unpredictable solutions for differential a…
Transient chaos is a characteristic behavior in nonlinear dynamics where trajectories in a certain region of phase space behave chaotically for a while, before escaping to an external attractor. In some situations the escapes are highly undesirable, so that it would be necessary to avoid such a situation. In this paper we apply a control method known as partial control that allows one to prevent the escapes of the trajectories to the external attractors, keeping the trajectories in the chaotic region forever. To illustrate how the method works, we have chosen the Lorenz system for a choice of …
In paper [1] unpredictable points were introduced based on Poisson stability, and this gives rise to the existence of chaos in the quasi-minimal set. This time, an unpredictable function is determined as an unpredictable point in the Bebutov dynamical system. The existence of an unpredictable solution and consequently chaos of a quasi-linear system of ordinary differential equations are verified. This is the first time that the description of chaos is initiated from a single function, but not on a collection of them. The results can be easily extended to different types of differential equatio…
A family of classical mathematical problems considers the visibility properties of geometric figures in the plane, e.g. curves or polygons. In particular, the {\it domination problem} tries to find the minimum number of points that are able to dominate the whole set, the so called, {\it domination number}. Alternatively, other problems try to determine the subsets of points with a given cardinality, that maximize the basin of domination, the {\it partial dominating set}. Since a discrete time series can be viewed as an ordered set of points in the plane, the dominating number and the partial d…
A delayed differential equation modelling a single neuron with inertial term is considered in this paper. Hopf bifurcation is studied by using the normal form theory of retarded functional differential equations. When adopting a nonmonotonic activation function, chaotic behavior is observed. Phase plots, waveform plots, and power spectra are presented to confirm the chaoticity.
Observability can determine which recorded variables of a given system are optimal for discriminating its different states. Quantifying observability requires knowledge of the equations governing the dynamics. These equations are often unknown when experimental data are considered. Consequently, we propose an approach for numerically assessing observability using Delay Differential Analysis (DDA). Given a time series, DDA uses a delay differential equation for approximating the measured data. The lower the least squares error between the predicted and recorded data, the higher the observabilit…
In this paper a new concept, namely the critical predictable time $T_c$, is introduced to give a more precise description of computed chaotic solutions of nonlinear differential equations: it is suggested that computed chaotic solutions are unreliable and doubtable when $ t > T_c$. This provides us a strategy to detect reliable solution from a given computed result. In this way, the computational phenomena, such as computational chaos (CC), computational periodicity (CP) and computational prediction uncertainty, which are mainly based on long-term properties of computed time series, can be com…
Identification of the unknown parameters and orders of fractional chaotic systems is of vital significance in controlling and synchronization of fractional-order chaotic systems. However there exist basic hypotheses in traditional estimation methods, that is, the parameters and fractional orders are partially known or the known data series coincide with definite forms of fractional chaotic differential equations except some uncertain parameters and fractional orders. What should I do when these hypotheses do not exist? In this paper, a non-Lyapunov novel approach with a novel united mathematic…
This paper tackles Hamiltonian chaos by means of elementary tools of Riemannian geometry. More precisely, a Hamiltonian flow is identified with a geodesic flow on configuration space-time endowed with a suitable metric due to Eisenhart. Until now, this framework has never been given attention to describe chaotic dynamics. A gap that is filled in the present work. In a Riemannian-geometric context, the stability/instability of the dynamics depends on the curvature properties of the ambient manifold and is investigated by means of the Jacobi--Levi-Civita (JLC) equation for geodesic spread. It is…
Systems whose time evolutions are entirely deterministic can nevertheless be studied probabilistically, i.e. in terms of the evolution of probability distributions rather than individual trajectories. This approach is central to the dynamics of ensembles (statistical mechanics) and systems with uncertainty in the initial conditions. Delay differential equations (DDEs) are a particular class of deterministic systems, distinguished by an explicit dependence of the dynamics on past states. A probabilistic approach to DDEs is lacking. The main problems we consider in developing such an approach ar…
A multidimensional chaos is generated by a special initial value problem for the non-autonomous impulsive differential equation. The existence of a chaotic attractor is shown, where density of periodic solutions, sensitivity of solutions and existence of a trajectory dense in the set of all orbits are observed. The chaotic properties of all solutions are discussed. An appropriate example is constructed, where the intermittency phenomenon is indicated. The results of the paper are illustrating that impulsive differential equations may play a special role in the investigation of the complex beha…
A universal differential equation is a nontrivial differential equation the solutions of which approximate to arbitrary accuracy any continuous function on any interval of the real line. On the other hand, there has been much interest in exactly solvable chaotic maps. An important problem is to generalize these results to continuous systems. Theoretical analysis would allow us to prove theorems about these systems and predict new phenomena. In the present paper we discuss the concept of universal functions and their relevance to the theory of universal differential equations. We present a conn…
Dissipative partial differential equations that exhibit chaotic dynamics tend to evolve to attractors that exist on finite-dimensional manifolds. We present a data-driven reduced order modeling method that capitalizes on this fact by finding the coordinates of this manifold and finding an ordinary differential equation (ODE) describing the dynamics in this coordinate system. The manifold coordinates are discovered using an undercomplete autoencoder -- a neural network (NN) that reduces then expands dimension. Then the ODE, in these coordinates, is approximated by a NN using the neural ODE fram…
We describe a new test for determining whether a given deterministic dynamical system is chaotic or nonchaotic. (This is an alternative to the usual approach of computing the largest Lyapunov exponent.) Our method is a 0-1 test for chaos (the output is a 0 signifying nonchaotic or a 1 signifying chaotic) and is independent of the dimension of the dynamical system. Moreover, the underlying equations need not be known. The test works equally well for continuous and discrete time. We give examples for an ordinary differential equation, a partial differential equation and for a map.
This thesis presents two descriptions of complexity in dynamical systems. The algebraic approach deals with the differential Galois group theory and its restrictions on integrability. The geometric part is a formulation of dynamics in the language of differential geometry with particular application to Lyapunov exponents and variational equations. The algorithm for calculating the Lyapunov spectrum is illustrated with three examples.

In the present study, we investigate the dynamics of impulsive differential equations driven by a chaotic system. We rigorously prove that, likewise the drive, the response impulsive system is also chaotic. Our results are based on the presence of sensitivity and infinitely many unstable periodic motions. The theoretical results are supported by simulations.
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis on the security of the Yi-Tan-Siew chaotic cipher proposed in [IEEE TCAS-I 49(12):1826-1829 (2002)]. A differential chosen-plaintext attack and a differential chosen-ciphertext attack are suggested to break the sub-key K, under the assumption that the time stamp can be altered by the attacker, which is reasonable in such attacks. Also, some security Problems about the sub-keys $α$ and $β$ are clarified, from both theoretical and experimental points of view. Further analysis shows that the security of this cipher is independent of the use of the chao…
By using the reduction technique to impulsive differential equations [1], we rigorously prove the presence of chaos in dynamic equations on time scales (DETS). The results of the present study are based on the Li-Yorke definition of chaos. This is the first time in the literature that chaos is obtained for DETS. An illustrative example is presented by means of a Duffing equation on a time scale.
Delay differential equations (DDEs) are infinite-dimensional systems, so even a scalar, unforced nonlinear DDE can exhibit chaos. Lyapunov exponents are indicators of chaos and can be computed by comparing the evolution of infinitesimally close trajectories. We convert DDEs into partial differential equations with nonlinear boundary conditions, then into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using the Galerkin projection. The solution of the resulting ODEs approximates that of the original DDE system; for smooth solutions, the error decreases exponentially as the number of terms used in the G…
We examine the dynamics of solutions to nonlinear Schrodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equations that arise due to Hamiltonian Hopf (HH) bifurcations--the collision of pairs of eigenvalues on the imaginary axis. To this end, we use inverse scattering to construct localized potentials for this model which lead to HH bifurcations in a predictable manner. We perform a formal reduction from the partial differential equations (PDE) to a small system of ordinary differential equations (ODE). We show numerically that the behavior of the PDE is well-approximated by that of the ODE and that both display Hamilt…
We give a hydrodynamical explanation for the chaotic behaviour of a dripping faucet using the results of the stability analysis of a static pendant drop and a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the complete dynamics. We find that the only relevant modes are the two classical normal forms associated with a Saddle-Node-Andronov bifurcation and a Shilnikov homoclinic bifurcation. This allows us to construct a hierarchy of reduced order models including maps and ordinary differential equations which are able to qualitatively explain prior experiments and numerical simulations of the governin…
For spatiotemporal chaos described by partial differential equations, there are generally locations where the dynamical variable achieves its local extremum or where the time partial derivative of the variable vanishes instantaneously. To a large extent, the location and movement of these topologically special points determine the qualitative structure of the disordered states. We analyze numerically statistical properties of the topologically special points in one-dimensional spatiotemporal chaos. The probability distribution functions for the number of point, the lifespan, and the distance c…

This paper addresses the question of how Brownian-like motion can arise from the solution of a deterministic differential delay equation. To study this we analytically study the bifurcation properties of an apparently simple differential delay equation and then numerically investigate the probabilistic properties of chaotic solutions of the same equation. Our results show that solutions of the deterministic equation with randomly selected initial conditions display a Gaussian-like density for long time, but the densities are supported on an interval of finite measure. Using these chaotic solut…

The Y-chromosome degeneration is still an intriguing mechanism and comprises the very origin of sex. We present a coupled version of the well known logistic map and the logistic equation describing the evolution of XY chromosomes. Although chaos was found in X, Y chromosomes do not evolve chaotically. A mathematical constraint is shown as the responsible for this behaviour. In addition, analytical solutions are presented for the differential equations herein.
The chaotic properties of simple two-dimensional rotation-translation models are explored and simulated. The models are given in difference equation forms, while the corresponding differential equations systems are studied and the resulting trajectories in the plane are explored and illustrated in the computer experiments done. Characteristic patterns, egg-shaped forms and central chaotic bulges are present when particles are introduced in the rotating system. The resulting forms and chaotic attractors mainly depend on the form of the nonlinear function expressing the rotation angle. Several c…
