In this paper a new concept, namely the critical predictable time $T_c$, is introduced to give a more precise description of computed chaotic solutions of nonlinear differential equations: it is suggested that computed chaotic solutions are unreliable and doubtable when $ t > T_c$. This provides us a strategy to detect reliable solution from a given computed result. In this way, the computational phenomena, such as computational chaos (CC), computational periodicity (CP) and computational prediction uncertainty, which are mainly based on long-term properties of computed time series, can be completely avoided. So, this concept also provides us a time-scale to determine whether or not a particular time is long enough for a given nonlinear dynamic system. Besides, the influence of data inaccuracy and various numerical schemes on the critical predictable time is investigated in details by using symbolic computation software as a tool. A reliable chaotic solution of Lorenz equation in a rather large interval $0 \leq t < 1200$ non-dimensional Lorenz time units is obtained for the first time. It is found that the precision of initial condition and computed data at each time-step, which is mathematically necessary to get such a reliable chaotic solution in such a long time, is so high that it is physically impossible due to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle in quantum physics. This however provides us a so-called "precision paradox of chaos", which suggests that the prediction uncertainty of chaos is physically unavoidable, and that even the macroscopical phenomena might be essentially stochastic and thus could be described by probability more economically.
The Lagrangian derivatives of finite-time Lyapunov exponents and the corresponding characteristic directions are shown to satisfy time-asymptotic differential constraints in chaotic flows. The constraints are valid for any metric tensor, and are realised with exponential accuracy in time. Some of these constraints were derived previously for chaotic systems on low-dimensional Euclidean spaces, by requiring that the Riemann curvature tensor vanish in Lagrangian coordinates. The new derivation applies in any number of dimensions, predicts the number of constraints for a given flow, and provides …
In this paper, a novel uncertain fractional-orders and parameters' inversion mechanism via the differential evolution algorithms (DE) with a general mathematical model is proposed for non-commensurate and hyper fractional chaotic systems. The problems of fractional-order chaos' inversion estimation are converted into multiple modal non-negative objective functions' minimization, which takes fractional-orders and parameters as its particular independent variables. And the objective is to find optimal combinations of fractional-orders and systematic parameters by DE in the predefined intervals f…
The combinative applications of one-way coupled map lattice (OCML) and some simple algebraic operations have demonstrated to be able to construct the best known chaotic cryptosystem with high practical security, fast encryption speed, and excellent robustness against channel noise. In this paper, we propose a differential-like chosen cipher attack to break the prototypical system cooperating with INT and MOD operations. This cryptographic method exploits the weakness that the high-dimensional cryptosystem degenerates to be one-dimensional under constant driving, therefore, is no more sensitive…
Pairs of numerically computed trajectories of a chaotic system may coalesce because of finite arithmetic precision. We analyse an example of this phenomenon, showing that it occurs surprisingly frequently. We argue that our model belongs to a universality class of chaotic systems where this numerical coincidence effect can be described by mapping it to a first-passage process. Our results are applicable to aggregation of small particles in random flows, as well as to numerical investigation of chaotic systems.
The recent paper claims that mean characteristics of chaotic orbits differ from the corresponding values averaged over the set of unstable periodic orbits, embedded in the chaotic attractor. We demonstrate that the alleged discrepancy is an artifact of the improper averaging: Since the natural measure is non-uniformly distributed over the attractor, different periodic orbits make different contributions into the time averages. As soon as the corresponding weights are accounted for, the discrepancy disappears.
In this computational paper, we perform sensitivity analysis of long-time (or ensemble) averages in the chaotic regime using the shadowing algorithm. We introduce automatic differentiation to eliminate the tangent/adjoint equation solvers used in the shadowing algorithm. In a gradient-based optimization, we use the computed shadowing sensitivity to minimize different long-time averaged functionals of a chaotic time-delayed system by optimal parameter selection. In combined state and parameter estimation for data assimilation, we use the computed sensitivity to predict the optimal trajectory gi…
We propose a simple method of constructing a system of differential equations of chaotic behavior based on the regression only from a scalar observable time-series data. The estimated system enables us to reconstruct invariant sets and statistical properties as well as to infer short time-series. Our successful modeling relies on the introduction of a set of Gaussian radial basis functions to capture local structure. The proposed method is used to construct a system of ordinary differential equations whose orbit reconstructs a time-series of a variable of the well-known Lorenz system as a simp…
Observability can determine which recorded variables of a given system are optimal for discriminating its different states. Quantifying observability requires knowledge of the equations governing the dynamics. These equations are often unknown when experimental data are considered. Consequently, we propose an approach for numerically assessing observability using Delay Differential Analysis (DDA). Given a time series, DDA uses a delay differential equation for approximating the measured data. The lower the least squares error between the predicted and recorded data, the higher the observabilit…
A phase-space semiclassical approximation valid to $O(\hbar)$ at short times is used to compare semiclassical accuracy for long-time and stationary observables in chaotic, stable, and mixed systems. Given the same level of semiclassical accuracy for the short time behavior, the squared semiclassical error in the chaotic system grows linearly in time, in contrast with quadratic growth in the classically stable system. In the chaotic system, the relative squared error at the Heisenberg time scales linearly with $\hbar_{\rm eff}$, allowing for unambiguous semiclassical determination of the eigenv…
Constructing low-dimensional ordinary differential equations from chaotic time series of high/infinite-dimensional systems using radial function-based regression
Identification of the unknown parameters and orders of fractional chaotic systems is of vital significance in controlling and synchronization of fractional-order chaotic systems. In this paper, a non-Lyapunov novel approach is proposed to estimate the unknown parameters and orders together for non-commensurate and hyper fractional chaotic systems based on cuckoo search oriented statistically the differential evolution (CSODE). Firstly, a novel Gao's mathematical model is put and analysed in three sub-models, not only for the unknown orders and parameters' identification but also for systems' r…
A chaotic network of size $N$ with delayed interactions which resembles a pseudo-inverse associative memory neural network is investigated. For a load $α=P/N<1$, where $P$ stands for the number of stored patterns, the chaotic network functions as an associative memory of 2P attractors with macroscopic basin of attractions which decrease with $α$. At finite $α$, a chaotic spin glass phase exists, where the number of distinct chaotic attractors scales exponentially with $N$. Each attractor is characterized by a coexistence of chaotic behavior and freezing of each one of the $N$ chaotic units or …
We consider discrete-time dynamical systems with a linear relaxation dynamics that are driven by deterministic chaotic forces. By perturbative expansion in a small time scale parameter, we derive from the Perron-Frobenius equation the corrections to ordinary Fokker-Planck equations in leading order of the time scale separation parameter. We present analytic solutions to the equations for the example of driving forces generated by N-th order Chebychev maps. The leading order corrections are universal for N larger or equal to 4 but different for N=2 and N=3. We also study diffusively coupled Che…
Identification of the unknown parameters and orders of fractional chaotic systems is of vital significance in controlling and synchronization of fractional-order chaotic systems. However there exist basic hypotheses in traditional estimation methods, that is, the parameters and fractional orders are partially known or the known data series coincide with definite forms of fractional chaotic differential equations except some uncertain parameters and fractional orders. What should I do when these hypotheses do not exist? In this paper, a non-Lyapunov novel approach with a novel united mathematic…
A delayed differential equation modelling a single neuron with inertial term is considered in this paper. Hopf bifurcation is studied by using the normal form theory of retarded functional differential equations. When adopting a nonmonotonic activation function, chaotic behavior is observed. Phase plots, waveform plots, and power spectra are presented to confirm the chaoticity.
Yao and Hughes commented (Tellus-A, 60: 803 - 805, 2008) that "all chaotic responses are simply numerical noise and have nothing to do with the solutions of differential equations". However, using 1200 CPUs of the National Supercomputer TH-A1 and a parallel integral algorithm of the so-called "Clean Numerical Simulation" (CNS) based on the 3500th-order Taylor expansion and data in 4180-digit multiple precision, one can gain reliable, convergent chaotic solution of Lorenz equation in a rather long interval [0,10000]. This supports Lorenz's optimistic viewpoint (Tellus-A, 60: 806 - 807, 2008): "…
A universal differential equation is a nontrivial differential equation the solutions of which approximate to arbitrary accuracy any continuous function on any interval of the real line. On the other hand, there has been much interest in exactly solvable chaotic maps. An important problem is to generalize these results to continuous systems. Theoretical analysis would allow us to prove theorems about these systems and predict new phenomena. In the present paper we discuss the concept of universal functions and their relevance to the theory of universal differential equations. We present a conn…
We experimentally observe the nonlinear dynamics of an optoelectronic time-delayed feedback loop designed for chaotic communication using commercial fiber optic links, and we simulate the system using delay differential equations. We show that synchronization of a numerical model to experimental measurements provides a new way to assimilate data and forecast the future of this time-delayed high-dimensional system. For this system, which has a feedback time delay of 22 ns, we show that one can predict the time series for up to several delay periods, when the dynamics is about 15 dimensional.
Properties of the phase space of the standard map with memory are investigated. This map was obtained from a kicked fractional differential equation. Depending on the value of the parameter of the map and the fractional order of the derivative in the original differential equation this nonlinear dynamical system demonstrates attractors (fixed points, stables periodic trajectories, slow converging and slow diverging trajectories, ballistic trajectories, and fractal-like structures) and/or chaotic trajectories. At least one type of fractal-like sticky attractors in the chaotic sea was observed.
The distribution of finite time observable averages and transport in low dimensional Hamiltonian systems is studied. Finite time observable average distributions are computed, from which an exponent $α$ characteristic of how the maximum of the distributions scales with time is extracted. To link this exponent to transport properties, the characteristic exponent $μ(q)$ of the time evolution of the different moments of order $q$ related to transport are computed. As a testbed for our study the standard map is used. The stochasticity parameter $K$ is chosen so that either phase space is mixed wit…
We compute Lyapunov vectors (LVs) corresponding to the largest Lyapunov exponents in delay-differential equations with large time delay. We find that characteristic LVs, and backward (Gram-Schmidt) LVs, exhibit long-range correlations, identical to those already observed in dissipative extended systems. In addition we give numerical and theoretical support to the hypothesis that the main LV belongs, under a suitable transformation, to the universality class of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. These facts indicate that in the large delay limit (an important class of) delayed equations behave e…
A multidimensional chaos is generated by a special initial value problem for the non-autonomous impulsive differential equation. The existence of a chaotic attractor is shown, where density of periodic solutions, sensitivity of solutions and existence of a trajectory dense in the set of all orbits are observed. The chaotic properties of all solutions are discussed. An appropriate example is constructed, where the intermittency phenomenon is indicated. The results of the paper are illustrating that impulsive differential equations may play a special role in the investigation of the complex beha…
We model chaotic diffusion, in a symplectic 4D map by using the result of a theorem that was developed for stochastically perturbed integrable Hamiltonian systems. We explicitly consider a map defined by a free rotator (FR) coupled to a standard map (SM). We focus in the diffusion process in the action, $I$, of the FR, obtaining a semi--numerical method to compute the diffusion coefficient. We study two cases corresponding to a thick and a thin chaotic layer in the SM phase space and we discuss a related conjecture stated in the past. In the first case the numerically computed probability dens…
We describe a new test for determining whether a given deterministic dynamical system is chaotic or nonchaotic. (This is an alternative to the usual approach of computing the largest Lyapunov exponent.) Our method is a 0-1 test for chaos (the output is a 0 signifying nonchaotic or a 1 signifying chaotic) and is independent of the dimension of the dynamical system. Moreover, the underlying equations need not be known. The test works equally well for continuous and discrete time. We give examples for an ordinary differential equation, a partial differential equation and for a map.
We give a hydrodynamical explanation for the chaotic behaviour of a dripping faucet using the results of the stability analysis of a static pendant drop and a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the complete dynamics. We find that the only relevant modes are the two classical normal forms associated with a Saddle-Node-Andronov bifurcation and a Shilnikov homoclinic bifurcation. This allows us to construct a hierarchy of reduced order models including maps and ordinary differential equations which are able to qualitatively explain prior experiments and numerical simulations of the governin…
This paper addresses the question of how Brownian-like motion can arise from the solution of a deterministic differential delay equation. To study this we analytically study the bifurcation properties of an apparently simple differential delay equation and then numerically investigate the probabilistic properties of chaotic solutions of the same equation. Our results show that solutions of the deterministic equation with randomly selected initial conditions display a Gaussian-like density for long time, but the densities are supported on an interval of finite measure. Using these chaotic solut…
The chaotic properties of simple two-dimensional rotation-translation models are explored and simulated. The models are given in difference equation forms, while the corresponding differential equations systems are studied and the resulting trajectories in the plane are explored and illustrated in the computer experiments done. Characteristic patterns, egg-shaped forms and central chaotic bulges are present when particles are introduced in the rotating system. The resulting forms and chaotic attractors mainly depend on the form of the nonlinear function expressing the rotation angle. Several c…
The determination of a differential equation underlying a measured time series is a frequently arising task in nonlinear time series analysis. In the validation of a proposed model one often faces the dilemma that it is hard to decide whether possible discrepancies between the time series and model output are caused by an inappropriate model or by bad estimates of parameters in a correct type of model, or both. We propose a combination of parametric modelling based on Bock's multiple shooting algorithm and nonparametric modelling based on optimal transformations as a strategy to test proposed …
This paper is devoted to the quantum chaology of three-dimensional systems. A trace formula is derived for compact polyhedral billiards which tessellate the three-dimensional hyperbolic space of constant negative curvature. The exact trace formula is compared with Gutzwiller's semiclassical periodic-orbit theory in three dimensions, and applied to a tetrahedral billiard being strongly chaotic. Geometric properties as well as the conjugacy classes of the defining group are discussed. The length spectrum and the quantal level spectrum are numerically computed allowing the evaluation of the trace…
Based on the invariance principle of differential equations a simple, systematic, and rigorous feedback scheme with the variable feedback strength is proposed to stabilize nonlinearly any chaotic systems without any prior analytical knowledge of the systems. Especially the method may be used to control near-nonhyperbolic chaotic systems, which although arising naturally from models in astrophysics to those for neurobiology, all OGY-type methods will fail to stabilize. The technique is successfully used to the famous Hindmarsh-Rose model neuron and the R$\ddot{\textrm{o}}$ssler hyperchaos syste…
We investigate chaotic dynamical systems for which the intensity of trajectories might grow unlimited in time. We show that (i) the intensity grows exponentially in time and is distributed spatially according to a fractal measure with an information dimension smaller than that of the phase space,(ii) such exploding cases can be described by an operator formalism similar to the one applied to chaotic systems with absorption (decaying intensities), but (iii) the invariant quantities characterizing explosion and absorption are typically not directly related to each other, e.g., the decay rate and…
An assumption of smooth response to small parameter changes, of statistics or long-time averages of a chaotic system, is generally made in the field of sensitivity analysis, and the parametric derivatives of statistical quantities are critically used in science and engineering. In this paper, we propose a numerical procedure to assess the differentiability of statistics with respect to parameters in chaotic systems. We numerically show that the existence of the derivative depends on the Lebesgue-integrability of a certain density gradient function, which we define as the derivative of logarith…
We analyse the classical and quantum behaviour of a particle trapped in a diamond shaped billiard. We defined this billiard as a half stadium connected with a triangular billiard. A parameter $ξ$ which gradually change the shape of the billiard from a regular equilateral triangle ($ξ=1$) to a diamond ($ξ=0$) was used to control the transition between the regular and chaotic regimes. The classical behaviour is regular when the control parameter $ξ$ is one; in contrast, the system is chaotic when $ξ\neq 1$ even for values of $ξ$ close to one. The entropy grows fast as $ξ$ is decreased from 1 and…
The Fluctuation Relation for a stationary state, kept at constant energy by a deterministic thermostat - the Gallavotti-Cohen Theorem -- relies on the ergodic properties of the system considered. We show that when perturbed by an energy-conserving random noise, the relation follows trivially for any system at finite noise amplitude. The time needed to achieve stationarity may stay finite as the noise tends to zero, or it may diverge. In the former case the Gallavotti-Cohen result is recovered, while in the latter case, the crossover time may be computed from the action of `instanton' orbits th…
We present a general approach for computing the dynamic partition function of a continuous-time Markov process. The Ruelle topological pressure is identified with the large deviation function of a physical observable. We construct for the first time a corresponding finite Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy for these processes. Then, as an example, the latter is computed for a symmetric exclusion process. We further present the first exact calculation of the topological pressure for an N-body stochastic interacting system, namely an infinite-range Ising model endowed with spin-flip dynamics. Expressions …
Generic one-parameter billiards are studied both classically and quantally. The classical dynamics for the billiards makes a transition from regular to fully chaotic motion through intermediary soft chaotic system. The energy spectra of the billiards are computed using finite element method which has not been applied to the euclidean billiard. True generic quantum chaotic transitional behavior and its sensitive dependence on classical dynamics are uncovered for the first time. That is, this sensitive dependence of quantum spectral measures on classical dynamics is a genuine manifestation of qu…
We consider a deterministic chaotic ratchet model for which the driving force is designed to allow the rectification of current as well as the control of chaos of the system. Besides the amplitude of the symmetric driving force which is often used in this framework as control parameter, a phase has been newly included here. Exploring this phase, responsible of the asymmetry of the driven force, a number of interesting departures have been revealed. Remarkably, it becomes possible to drive the system into one of the following regime: the state of zero transport, the state of directed transport …
The long therm behavior of chaotic flows is investigated by means of time dependent frequency analysis. The system under test consists of an electrically conducting fluid, confined between two differentially rotating spheres. The spherical setup is exposed to an axial magnetic field. The classical Fourier Transform method provides a first estimation of the time dependence of the frequencies associated to the flow, as well as its volume-averaged properties. It is however unable to detect strange attractors close to regular solutions in the Feigenbaum as well as Newhouse-Ruelle-Takens bifurcatio…
Motivated by the realization of magnetic monopole of Berry curvature by the energy crossing point, we theoretically study the effect of magnetic monopole under a uniform electric field in the semiclassical dynamics, which is relevant to many physical situations such as relaxation through the diabolic point. We found that the competition between the backward scattering by the monopole magnetic field and the acceleration by the electric field leads to the bound state, i.e., capture of a particle near the monopole. Furthermore, the nonlinearity induced by the magnetic monopole leads to the chaoti…
We calculate the joint probability distribution of the Wigner-Smith time-delay matrix $Q=-i\hbar S^{-1} \partial S/\partial ε$ and the scattering matrix $S$ for scattering from a chaotic cavity with ideal point contacts. Hereto we prove a conjecture by Wigner about the unitary invariance property of the distribution functional $P[S(ε)]$ of energy dependent scattering matrices $S(ε)$. The distribution of the inverse of the eigenvalues $τ_1,...,τ_N$ of $Q$ is found to be the Laguerre ensemble from random-matrix theory. The eigenvalue density $ρ(τ)$ is computed using the method of orthogonal poly…
We investigate the probability distribution of the quantum fluctuations of thermodynamic functions of finite, ballistic, phase-coherent Fermi gases. Depending on the chaotic or integrable nature of the underlying classical dynamics, on the thermodynamic function considered, and on temperature, we find that the probability distributions are dominated either (i) by the local fluctuations of the single-particle spectrum on the scale of the mean level spacing, or (ii) by the long-range modulations of that spectrum produced by the short periodic orbits. In case (i) the probability distributions are…
Microtubules are filamentous tubular protein polymers which are essential for a range of cellular behaviour, and are generally straight over micron length scales. However, in some gliding assays, where microtubules move over a carpet of molecular motors, individual microtubules can also form tight arcs or rings, even in the absence of crosslinking proteins. Understanding this phenomenon may provide important explanations for similar highly curved microtubules which can be found in nerve cells undergoing neurodegeneration. We propose a model for gliding assays where the kinesins moving the micr…
This paper presents the space-split sensitivity or the S3 algorithm to transform Ruelle's linear response formula into a well-conditioned ergodic-averaging computation. We prove a decomposition of Ruelle's formula that is differentiable on the unstable manifold, which we assume to be one-dimensional. This decomposition of Ruelle's formula ensures that one of the resulting terms, the stable contribution, can be computed using a regularized tangent equation, similar to in a non-chaotic system. The remaining term, known as the unstable contribution, is regularized and converted into an efficientl…
In the present study, we investigate the dynamics of impulsive differential equations driven by a chaotic system. We rigorously prove that, likewise the drive, the response impulsive system is also chaotic. Our results are based on the presence of sensitivity and infinitely many unstable periodic motions. The theoretical results are supported by simulations.
Chaotic dynamics in systems ranging from low-dimensional nonlinear differential equations to high-dimensional spatio-temporal systems including fluid turbulence is supported by non-chaotic, exactly recurring time-periodic solutions of the governing equations. These unstable periodic orbits capture key features of the turbulent dynamics and sufficiently large sets of orbits promise a framework to predict the statistics of the chaotic flow. Computing periodic orbits for high-dimensional spatio-temporally chaotic systems remains challenging as known methods either show poor convergence properties…
In this paper an analytic approach is devised to represent, and study the behavior of, nonlinear dynamic chaotic Genesio system using general nonlinear modal representation. In this approach, the original nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of model transforms to a sequence of linear time- invariant ODEs. By solving the proposed linear ODEs sequence, the exact solution of the original nonlinear problem is determined in terms of uniformly convergent series. Also an efficient algorithm with low computational complexity and high accuracy is presented to find the approximate solution.…
