Let $\{P_n \}_{n\ge0}$ be a sequence of monic orthogonal polynomials with respect to a quasi--definite linear functional $u$ and $\{Q_n \}_{n\ge0}$ a sequence of polynomials defined by $$Q_n(x)=P_n(x)+s_n P_{n-1}(x)+t_n P_{n-2}(x),\quad n\ge1,$$ with $t_n \not= 0$ for $n\ge2$.
We obtain a new characterization of the orthogonality of the sequence $\{Q_n \}_{n\ge0}$ with respect to a linear functional $v$, in terms of the coefficients of a quadratic polynomial $h$ such that $h(x)v= u$.
We also study some cases in which the parameters $s_n$ and $t_n$ can be computed more easily, and give several examples.
Finally, the interpretation of such a perturbation in terms of the Jacobi matrices associated with $\{P_n \}_{n\ge0}$ and $\{Q_n \}_{n\ge0}$ is presented.
We provide a simple method to recognize classical orthogonal polynomials on lattices defined only by their coefficients of the three term recurrence relation.
We present a method to obtain weight functions associated with linear and quadratic lattices that yield discrete orthogonality with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional of the orthogonal polynomial sequences in the Askey scheme, with the exception of the Jacobi, Bessel, Laguerre, and Hermite polynomials.
Every classical orthogonal polynomial system $p_n(x)$ satisfies a three-term recurrence relation of the type \[ p_{n+1}(x)=(A_nx+B_n)p_n(x)-C_np_{n-1}(x)~ (n=0,1,2,\ldots, p_{-1}\equiv 0), \] with $C_nA_nA_{n-1}>0$. Moreover, Favard's theorem states that the converse is true. A general method to derive the coefficients $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$ in terms of the polynomial coefficients of the divided-difference equations satisfied by orthogonal polynomials on a quadratic or $q$-quadratic lattice is recalled. The Maple implementations rec2ortho of Koorwinder and Swarttouw or retode of Koepf and Schmers…
This paper is devoted to characterizations classical orthogonal polynomials on quadratic lattices by using a matrix approach. In this form we recover the Hahn, Geronimus, Tricomi and Bochner type characterizations of classical orthogonal polynomials on quadratic lattices. Moreover a new characterization is also presented. From the Bochner type characterization we derive the three-term recurrence relation coefficients for these polynomials.
We describe bivariate polynomial sequences orthogonal to a symmetric weight function in terms of several bivariate polynomial sequences orthogonal with respect to Christoffel transformations of the initial weight under a quadratic transformation. We analyze the construction of a symmetric bivariate orthogonal polynomial sequence from a given one, orthogonal to a weight function defined on the positive plane. In this description plays an important role a sort of Backlund type matrix transformations for the involved three term matrix coefficients. We take as a case study relations between symmet…
We prove an equivalence between the existence of the first structure relation satisfied by a sequence of monic orthogonal polynomials $\{P_n\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$, the orthogonality of the second derivatives $\{\mathbb{D}_{x}^2P_n\}_{n= 2}^{\infty}$ and a generalized Sturm-Liouville type equation. Our treatment of the generalized Bochner theorem leads to explicit solutions of the difference equation [Vinet L., Zhedanov A., J. Comput. Appl. Math. 211 (2008), 45-56], which proves that the only monic orthogonal polynomials that satisfy the first structure relation are Wilson polynomials, continuous d…
We discuss quadratic transformations for orthogonal polynomials in one and two variables. In the one-variable case we list many (or all) quadratic transformations between families in the Askey scheme or $q$-Askey scheme. In the two-variable case we focus, after some generalities, on the polynomials associated with root system $BC_2$, i.e., $BC_2$-type Jacobi polynomials if $q=1$ and Koornwinder polynomials in two variables in the $q$-case.
We apply a symbolic approach of the general quadratic decomposition of polynomial sequences - presented in a previous article referenced herein - to polynomial sequences fulfilling specific orthogonal conditions towards two given functionals $u_{0},u_{1}$ belonging to the dual of the vector space of polynomials with coefficients in $\mathbb{C}$. The general quadratic decomposition produces four new sets of polynomials whose properties are investigated with the help of the mentioned symbolic approach together with further commands which inquire relevant features, as for instance, the classical …
In this paper, a fourth-order partial divided-difference equation on quadratic lattices with polynomial coefficients satisfied by bivariate Racah polynomials is presented. From this equation we obtain explicitly the matrix coefficients appearing in the three-term recurrence relations satisfied by any bivariate orthogonal polynomial solution of the equation. In particular, we provide explicit expressions for the matrices in the three-term recurrence relations satisfied by the bivariate Racah polynomials introduced by Tratnik. Moreover, we present the family of monic bivariate Racah polynomials …
We present explicit constructions of orthogonal polynomials inside quadratic bodies of revolution, including cones, hyperboloids, and paraboloids. We also construct orthogonal polynomials on the surface of quadratic surfaces of revolution, generalizing spherical harmonics to the surface of a cone, hyperboloid, and paraboloid. We use this construction to develop cubature and fast approximation methods.
Orthogonal polynomials on quadratic curves in the plane are studied. These include orthogonal polynomials on ellipses, parabolas, hyperbolas, and two lines. For an integral with respect to an appropriate weight function defined on any quadratic curve, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is constructed in terms of two families of orthogonal polynomials in one variable. Convergence of the Fourier orthogonal expansions is also studied in each case. As an application, we see that the resulting bases can be used to interpolate functions on the real line with singularities of the form $|x|$,…
This paper is a sequel of the reference \cite[§4.2, p.p. 1782--1783]{almp}, in where some families of quadratic polynomial vector fields related with orthogonal polynomials were studied. We extend such results that contain some details related with differential Galois Theory as well the inclusion of Darboux theory of integrability and qualitative theory of dynamical systems.
The purpose of this note is to establish, from the hypergeometric-type difference equation introduced by Nikiforov and Uvarov, new tractable sufficient conditions for the monotonicity with respect to a real parameter of zeros of classical discrete orthogonal polynomials. This result allows one to carry out a systematic study of the monotonicity of zeros of classical orthogonal polynomials on linear, quadratic, q-linear, and q-quadratic grids. In particular, we analyze in a simple and unified way the monotonicity of the zeros of Hahn, Charlier, Krawtchouk, Meixner, Racah, dual Hahn, q-Meixner, …
Using the fixed point alternative theorem we establish the orthogonal stability of quadratic functional equation of Pexider type $f(x+y)+g(x-y)=h(x)+k(y)$, where $f, g, h, k$ are mappings from a symmetric orthogonality space to a Banach space, by orthogonal additive mappings under a necessary and sufficient condition on $f$.
Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball are obtained. By using Parseval's identity, a new family of multivariate orthogonal functions are introduced. The results are expressed in terms of the continuous Hahn polynomials.
We obtain definite integrals for products of associated Legendre functions with Bessel functions, associated Legendre functions, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind using orthogonality and integral transforms.
In this paper Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the simplex is presented. A new family of multivariate orthogonal functions is obtained by using the Parseval's identity and several recurrence relations are derived.
A slight modification of the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform is an automorphism on the vector space of polynomials. The action of this $KL_α$-transform over certain polynomial sequences will be under discussion, and a special attention will be given the d-orthogonal ones. For instance, the Continuous Dual Hahn polynomials appear as the $KL_α$-transform of a 2-orthogonal sequence of Laguerre type. Finally, all the orthogonal polynomial sequences whose $KL_α$-transform is a $d$-orthogonal sequence will be characterized: they are essencially semiclassical polynomials fulfilling particular condition…
By using the Szegő's transformation we deduce new relations between the recurrence coefficients for orthogonal polynomials on the real line and the Verblunsky parameters of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Moreover, we study the relation between the corresponding $\mathcal{S}$-functions and $\mathcal{C}$-functions
We investigate the quadratic decomposition and duality to classify symmetrical $H_{q}$-semiclassical orthogonal $q$-polynomials of class one where $H_{q}$ is the Hahn's operator. For any canonical situation, the recurrence coefficients, the $q$-analog of the distributional equation of Pearson type, the moments and integral or discrete representations are given.
We obtain weight functions associated with $q$-linear and $q$-quadratic lattices that yield discrete orthogonality with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional for the Askey-Wilson polynomials and all the polynomial sequences in the q-Askey scheme, with the exception of the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials.
We use orthogonality measures of Askey--Wilson polynomials to construct Markov processes with linear regressions and quadratic conditional variances. Askey--Wilson polynomials are orthogonal martingale polynomials for these processes.
In this work, the concept of quasi-type Kernel polynomials with respect to a moment functional is introduced. Difference equation satisfied by these polynomials along with the criterion for orthogonality conditions are discussed. The process of recovering orthogonality for the linear combination of a quasi-type kernel polynomial with another orthogonal polynomial, which is identified by involving linear spectral transformation, is provided. This process involves an expression of ratio of iterated kernel polynomials. This lead to considering the limiting case of ratio of kernel polynomials invo…
Contiguous hypergeometric relations for semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials are described as Christoffel and Geronimus transformations. Using the Christoffel-Geronimus-Uvarov formulas quasi-determinatal expressions for the shifted semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials are obtained.
The discrete cosine transforms of types V--VIII are generalized to the antisymmetric and symmetric multivariate discrete cosine transforms. Four families of discretely and continuously orthogonal Chebyshev-like polynomials corresponding to the antisymmetric and symmetric generalizations of cosine functions are introduced. Each family forms an orthogonal basis of the space of all polynomials with respect to some weighted integral. Cubature formulas, which correspond to these families of polynomials and which stem from the developed discrete cosine transforms, are derived. Examples of three-dime…
Linear spectral transformations of orthogonal polynomials in the real line, and in particular Geronimus transformations, are extended to orthogonal polynomials depending on several real variables. Multivariate Christoffel-Geronimus-Uvarov formulae for the perturbed orthogonal polynomials and their quasi-tau matrices are found for each perturbation of the original linear functional. These expressions are given in terms of quasi-determinants of bordered truncated block matrices and the 1D Christoffel-Geronimus-Uvarov formulae in terms of quotient of determinants of combinations of the original o…
