Molecular dynamics simulations of frictional sliding in an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) show a clear dependence of superlubricity between incommensurate surfaces on tip compliance and applied normal force. While the kinetic friction vanishes for rigid tips and low normal force, superlubric behavior breaks down for softer tips and high normal force. The simulations provide evidence that the Frenkel-Kontorova-Tomlinson (FKT) scaling applies equally to a more realistic 3-D incommensurate AFM model except in the limit of very low stiffness and high normal load limit. Unlike the FKT model in which the breakdown of superlubricity coincides to the emergence of the meta-stable states, in the 3-D model some meta-stable states appear to reduce frictional force leading to non-monotonic dependence of force on normal load and tip compliance. Meta-stable states vary with the slider positions, and the relative stabilities of these meta-stable states result in varying transition mechanisms depending on sliding velocity.
The sliding energy landscape of the heterogeneous graphene/h-BN interface is studied by means of the registry index. For a graphene flake sliding on top of h-BN the anisotropy of the sliding energy corrugation with respect to the misfit angle between the two naturally mismatched lattices is found to reduce with the flake size. For sufficiently large flakes the sliding energy corrugation is expected to be at least an order of magnitude lower than that obtained for matching lattices regardless of the relative interlayer orientation thus resulting in a stable low-friction state. This is in contra…

We study the effects of temperature and sliding velocity on superlubricity in numerical simulations of the Frenkel-Kontorova model. We show that resonant excitations of the phonons in an incommensurate sliding body lead to an effective friction and to thermal equilibrium with energy distributed over the internal degrees of freedom. For finite temperature, the effective friction can be described well by a viscous damping force, with a damping coefficient that emerges naturally from the microscopic dynamics. This damping coefficient is a non-monotonic function of the sliding velocity which peaks…
Superlubricity is a frictionless tribological state sometimes occurring in nanoscale material junctions. It is often associated with incommensurate surface lattice structures appearing at the interface. Here, by using the recently introduced registry index concept which quantifies the registry mismatch in layered materials, we prove the existence of a direct relation between interlayer commensurability and wearless friction in layered materials. We show that our simple and intuitive model is able to capture, down to fine details, the experimentally measured frictional behavior of a hexagonal g…
A single graphene layer placed between two parallel Ni(111) surfaces screens the strong attractive force and results in a significant reduction of adhesion and sliding friction. When two graphene layers are inserted, each graphene is attached to one of the metal surfaces with a significant binding and reduces the adhesion further. In the sliding motion of these surfaces the transition from stick-slip to continuous sliding is attained, whereby non-equilibrium phonon generation through sudden processes is suppressed. The adhesion and corrugation strength continues to decrease upon insertion of t…
The potential energy surface (PES) of interlayer interaction of twisted bilayer graphene with vacancies in one of the layers is investigated via density functional theory (DFT) calculations with van der Waals corrections. These calculations give a non-negligible magnitude of PES corrugation of 28 meV per vacancy and barriers for relative sliding of the layers of 7 - 8 meV per vacancy for the moiré pattern with coprime indices (2,1) (twist angle 21.8$^\circ$). At the same time, using the semiempirical potential fitted to the DFT results, we confirm that twisted bilayer graphene without defects …
We report on the superlubric sliding of monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) on epitaxial graphene (EG) on silicon carbide (SiC). WS2 single-crystalline flakes with lateral size of hundreds of nanometers are obtained via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on EG and microscopic and diffraction analyses indicate that the WS2/EG stack is predominantly aligned with zero azimuthal rotation. Our experimental findings show that the WS2 flakes are prone to slide over graphene surfaces at room temperature when perturbed by a scanning probe microscopy (SPM) tip. Atomistic force field based molecular dynamics…
We present Molecular Dynamics simulations of one- and two-dimensional bead-spring models sliding on incommensurate substrates. We investigate how sliding friction is affected by interaction anharmonicity and structural defects. In their absence, we confirm earlier findings, namely, that at special resonance sliding velocities, friction is maximal. When sliding off-resonance, partially thermalized states are possible, whereby only a small number of vibrational modes becomes excited, but whose kinetic energies are already Maxwell-Boltzmann distributed. Anharmonicity and defects typically destroy…
We show that low temperature specific heat (C$_p$) of the incommensurate chain-ladder system Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ is enriched by the presence of a rather large excess contribution of non-magnetic origin. Diluted Al doping at the Cu site or annealing the crystal in an O$_2$ atmosphere suppresses this feature considerably. Using the THz time-domain spectroscopy, we show that the occurrence of excess specific heat is associated with the presence of very low-energy ($\sim$ 1 meV) gapped phonon modes that originate due to the sliding motion of oppositely charged mutually incommensurate chain …
Using molecular dynamics (MD) we study the dependency of the contact mechanics on the sliding speed when an elastic block (cylinder) with a ${\rm cos} (q_0 x)$ surface height profile is sliding in adhesive contact on a rigid flat substrate. The atoms on the block interact with the substrate atoms by Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials, and we consider both commensurate and(nearly) incommensurate contacts. For the incommensurate system the friction force fluctuates between positive and negative values, with an amplitude proportional to the sliding speed, but with the average close to zero. For the com…
